  • It’s more than just a prop. Vic Mignogna, who stars as Captain Kirk in “Star Trek Continues,” shows us the famous Captain’s chair and explains how the set designer re-created a replica of the original version, down to the hand-poured control buttons.

Are we all forgetting that he’s known for lots and lots and even LOTS of promising roles in voice acting anime?

No doubt! I affectionately call it the lost episodes of Star Trek and in my view is part of the ST canon. Thanks a million Vic Mignogna and staff!

Thank you very much, Mr. Mignogna. I finally got a good view at the left side panels. Needed it for my own chair build.

Your first step to building your own Kirk chair is the most difficult and expensive... getting a real Madison chair (in good shape, and with the wooden arms) is major $$$$. After that, it's a relatively simple bit of construction. Using the Mike Minor blueprints of the bridge (always available on eBay and elsewhere, probably even online), you can get the other parts' dimensions. One caveat, though... put weight into the base of the unit, or you will find that it is tilt over backwards top-heavy when people quickly stand up. For the controls on the arms, like Vic said, find someone to pour you some resin "gumdrop" buttons, the remaining buttons can be created by hand (Sculpy and multiple castings for the various buttons, is one way) and a piece of vintage Fender amp cloth for the intercom. And don't forget the coffee stain on the carpet near where Kirk's left boot would rest. ;)

Truly miss your ST Continues fan series … I always really looked forward to the next installment …, kinda made it an event where friends would come over …. I would bring up Star Trek Continues on my 80” smart TV and get that “Theater” experience … can’t tell you how much I miss that !!

Disappointed that the title of this is misleading. It does NOT show you "how" to build the chair. Undoubtedly Vic paid someone to build it, and knows little about it, not even about the rocker switches

YOu are taking back those days of mine in these videos of Star Trek:
like John Riso said: "moraly clean content"...missed that.

Um, I'm sorry, sir, but the button you pushed was for yellow alert. To jettison Lt. Commander Finney, you need to push the *middle* button.

Honestly I haven’t seen Star Trek Continues, I was just kind of curious to see how much Edward Elric sounded like his English VA.

Great video. By the way, unless the construction crew found a chair that was an orphan, it wasn't "adopted" it was "adapted." :)

Was there a highback version of the Madison or did the set crew added a highback attachment in _Mirror, Mirror_ and _The Ultimate Computer_ for Comm. Wesley's chair?

+Sean OConnell That's because STC did not build the chair. Starship Farragut actually built the chair. Wired would not permit any connection to Starship Farragut during the filming of these clips.

+starshipfarragut That's a shame and a disservice to your work on the part of wired.
