Chevy TrailBlazer Ball Joints Replace -TrailBlazer Upper And Lower Ball Joints Replacement

- in this video we show the process of replacing the front suspension upper and lower ball joints on a 2006 Chevy TrailBlazer. Here is a link to the Astro ball joint press adaptor set I use in the video:
www.amazon.com/...
I found this vid very helpful. As he indicated you DO need a special adapter to fit over the lower part of the lower ball joint to remove it - a "cup" sleeve that 2.5 inch inner diameter that has a cut-out on one side. On the top side of the original ball joint there was a factory crimp instead of a o-ring - I ground that off. I could not press out the old sleeve - at least with the force I was using - but it popped when I used a 5 lb hammer and struck the ball joint removal tool threaded rod. Not a hard tap - just needed that impulse hit to pop it. I had to do the same thing when pressing the new one - it went in about 75% of the way - and a good tap caused it to pop in a bit more. The only way this vid could be better if the torque info was listed but I can google for that!
Man I own a trailblazer and watch all your videos. You saved me tons of money. Much appreciated my friend
You make everything look so easy may be coz you have the proper tools
Basic tools with manual labor will also work. Just remember, if you're taking axle nut off, loosen it when on ground 35mm, but mine was 36mm. Also, loosen your 19mm wheel lugs same time
Brother!! I LOVE THIS video you make it look simple and you have a great video personality. I LOVE my Trailblazer and keep repairing it out of love (ad opposed to ditching it and getting another vehicle), you videos make this much easier.
Thank you.
Did this today and it was very simple. Took off axle nut as to not pull out or ruin axle joints. Old ball joint was TOAST! The wheel was ready to come off while driving. It had left, right and north/south play. That ball was 1/3 smaller than original part. I did not take off brakes. I did loosen brake line clamps to pull arm out to press in and out joints. Easy job. Just did the upper. Thanks coffee Dr.
Awesome!
Just saw this. This is the absolute best video I’ve seen yet. Very professional. You should make complete video manuals.
Thank you!
You make it look easy, thank you so much for the knowledge. I'm on my second trailblazer and watch these videos just for fun
I got to do uppers and lowers on my wifes Envoy as well as control arm bushings in the coming weeks. This video was great for helping me get a plan of attack. Thx Doc!
I just got done doing upper and lower ball joints on my '06 TB. On the lower ball joint I used a chisel to remove the factory rollover ring. I tried to remove the joint with the Harbor Freight C-press but it powered out my 500 ft-lb air gun. So I used an oxy-acetylene torch to warm the control arm around the joint; that allowed it to pop out (we have lots of rust here from winter salt). Going together, the Moog parts fit perfect. While putting the upper ball joint in one spindle arm it started crooked with the C-press; didn't want to go in from that point. But setting up the arm in my 20 ton floor press took care of that attitude. The Astro Kit you recommend is what I got; it worked perfect. Overall, your video is a huge help.
Thanks! I hate rust. Good job.
Hilarious intro with the coffee! Perfect instructional video Sir!
Thank you!
Hey Cardoctor, watched your video and changed the lower ball joint in my mothers 2004 Trailblazer. Video was spot on. Thanks man
IM so glad it helped. Blessings to you!
This was the first and last video I watched for this job.. Very nice and proper video.. Thank you, sir.
I really enjoyed the information and the analytical process set forth in the video. I am looking at buying a Trail Blazer tomorrow.
Loved your video Dr. Very entertaining at the beginning with the coffee. Lol. I have a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer. The ball joints are in bad shape. I have a few friends that I can count on. Here's hoping we can Git-r-done b4 the snow starts flying. Have a blessed one. 😇
Was looking for torque specs for axle nut and wheel nuts in which I've found to be 103ft.lb for axle nut and 100ft.lb for wheel nuts...per envoy clear, 6cylinder 4.2
I've got to tackle this job in a couple days... not looking forward to it, but this video is awesome. THANKS!!!
What tools do you use I rent for auto zone and O'reilly it fix the upper ball joint but won't fit the lower ball joint
great video..thanks
Thanks for this video, I’m glad you posted that link for the Astro kit
Are 2005 Chevy trailblazer lower ball joints removable? You make this look ridiculously easy but my passenger side is not even budging. Its actually starting mess with the side tabs. I haven't even attempted the driver side yet. Upper control arm and ball joint were a piece of cake.
Nicely done. With the right tools it doesn't like too bad of a job. I recently purchased that Astro ball joint kit and your right, the cost wasn't that bad. I like the coffee intro!
+wyattoneable Thanks, I tell you what. I really didn't sleep well last night and I don't think I got half that latte down the hatch since most of it spilled down my shirt. I put the link to the astro kit in the description so folks can see how cheap it is.
I have a 2007 GMC Envoy but this video came up under a search in you tube. This video make it look simple to change lower ball joint
hey doc, you're too high on caffeine but a great video! Found my 2005 Trailblazer lower ball joints were factory pressed and needed to chisel the lip away. Also the lower arm was curved so the press turned, resorted to a pressman tool to pop the lower ball joint. Replacement was just like the video. Thanks for the show😁
Hey I just finished my quad shot espresso and saw your comment. Thanks for watching and glad you got it fixed up!
Video helped a lot my customer has a trailblazer with over 300000 miles one and it's still going strong will be watching more
wow, that's a lot of miles! Thanks for watching
I have to thank you sir for your video. You did a great job working on this. If you can do more videos with Trailblazer repairs that would be awesome. I'm trying to do the lower control arm bushings but its difficult but Ima try it again soon. I just regret not buying the control arm with everything already in place. Thanks again for your great contribution to youtube learning.
Thank you. I will certainly produce some more trailblazer vids when I can. Good luck with the control arm.
you are the man! I had alot of problems, but when I saw your video it was easy
super glad it helped! take care.
Thanks for the video. My passenger side lower came out no problem but the driver side was not as easy. In fact broke off one of the metal tabs on the lower control arm so the press was pretty much useless at that point. Had to resort to removing the ball joint "pie crust" lip via air chisel, then heat it up and beat it out with a socket and sledge. New moogs pressed back in perfectly along with the uppers. Did the hub bearings since the knuckle was off plus they had over 200k on them. It's videos and instructions like this that keep my baby on the road after 225,000 miles. BTW amazon sells the accessory and C press as one complete unit for around $114. Not a bad deal. Now time for some coffee!!!!!!!! Thank you car doc!!!!
Amazon Search... Astro 7897 Ball Joint Service Tool Kit and Master Adapter Set
This video helped me out a lot and also you drink that coffee like a savage
This guy is awesome! Also was able to do my ball joints with no problems!!
One of the best videos I've seen on UA-cam. Thank you. J.B.
wow, the guy is a talented mechanic.
surprised you didn't mention my good looks as well. haha, thanks for watching
@@ThecardoctorTV If he would have said you were " good looking "......I would've known this video was a sham
Very well done video, thanks for the info.....you are a class A mechanik.....God Bless
Thanks for this great video! Just some addons...I use thin engine oil when installing ball joints which makes them come in a bit easier. I am wondering did you ever have one of those ball joint press snap on you? I know it is very important to line things properly or you can have things flying under tension.
I didnt have to separate the abs sensor wire...removed just 2 clips and set the steering knuckle on the side (I have made a small step using 2x12 wood that I use to jump on...TB is pretty tall).
HELPFUL TIPS
OURS WAS NOT THIS EASY!!!
I watched a couple videos after this and hours of trying things and buying new tools.
To get it out he took a grinder and grinded off the lip of the lower ball joint.
Then put a socket on top of the ball joint and hit it a couple times with a hammer .. ( HARD) took a couple tries but it worked.
Putting the new one in he cleaned out the inside that holds the ball joint with a drimel, and then greased it.
Used a blow torch and heated the piece that holds the ball joint. Then use the ball joint kit to help ease it in( it’s not easy lol) .
One side took hours, the next day after hours of trying it took a couple mins to get it out and new one in.
If it weren’t for these videos...my truck would be a ball of flames right now...lol...and the air impact is a must! I removed and installed the upper ball joint by hand and it took everything I had in me to do so...it’s help if I was a big strong guy but unfortunately I’m only 5’ tall female...but I got the sucker!
sweet vid! I have an 03 Envoy that just clunks from the front end and want to replace everything. Looks like I'll need that ball joint tool and an impact wrench
Great Video! Good editing! It covered every step and wasn't any longer than it needed to be. The voice-over is MUCH better than on-the-go explanation. Thanks, I'm now comfortable tackeling the task myself!
Thanks, good luck with it.
Thanks for posting the video... I just completed my 03 Trailbalzer uppers and lowers and your vid certainly helped me.
The ball joints is what makes it sound like a popping noise when hitting bumps?
I watch him and learn and it is a constant reminder that i am not a real mechanic.
Hi Car Doctor on the FRONT Hub nut does it need to have load on it before torquing it? GREAT Video series on the Trailblazers and need to try out that Coffee to!!! 👍
Thanks bud. Appreciate it. Lived in Fairbanks three years and sure miss AK
Wish I had a 4 post lift like yours! Makes repairs a lot simpler.
Yes that helps a little. You got this.
So very well produced video, and excellent workmanship.
I would like to add these inspection points, while the knuckle is out:
CV shaft seal at oil pan.. this would be a great time to just change it out.
CV joint, check for slack.
Hub bearing, check for slack.
Wishbone bushings, check for slack.
Good call and attention to detail. All good things to watch for and keep in mind. Thanks for the input and for watching. Blessings
Enjoyed your video, is well done, great info. But you might want to add that with factory installed lower ball joints with a crimped lip, that you remove the crimps and/or lip and apply a little heat, as in a OXY/ACET. torch or even a small MAPP gas torch, it makes the press much easier. I removed the old rubber boot before heating so it doesn't burn. Thanks again for sharing your expertise ! Was very helpful.
Hahaha, that intro :D
Quick, efficient and quality workmanship right there! Thanks for the video!
+Koffi Banan thanks for watching!
ASE certified coffee LOL. Tim I don't see the Amazon link , good idea brother 👍👍
+Steve Rob OH thanks , I added it. Coffee makes me smart.
Best video I have seen on this topic!
Oh wow, thank you. Glad it was helpful.
Hi Tim,Nice video I really like the intro .I think I'm going to get a cup before I get started.I wish it was up in Alaska but I will have to settle for New Jersey.Lol
+jimthecarguy Jersey has some wonderful coffee. I think that's where coffee was invented...By Chris Christie
+The Car Doctor Ha Ha Good one
I have to do the upper ball joint, and this video was extremely helpful thanks, by the way you make it look way to easy...
Haha. Thanks. It's sure nice to have the tools and equipment that make it easier. You got this!
Got to have coffee before you start a job -:) Great video!
+N Smith Thanks coffee helps me loose weight.
Me to -:)
that coffee bit at the start had me cracking up! Im curious.. Is that shop yours? Do you work for someone? and do you work with anyone else? as i never seem to hear anyone else working in the background? Nice job yet again
+The Savage Garage Thanks. I work with my wife and we lease the shop space. they charge a lot of rent for a space like this here. Looking to get into our own place but likely wont be hiring any new help just because I don't like people. hehe
Thanks Car Doc for the fantastic video! I thiink I've seen you around Anchroage. Do you have any videos on Oil Pan replacement for an 05 Trailblazer?
I do not sorry. Not my favorite job for sure. Maybe see you sometime. Please say hi.
Did you have to remove the boots on new ball joint before pressing them in? So you didn’t ruin new boots?
Question. I have a 2006 trailblazer, what size is the socket used for axle nut. I need to buy one and I am unsure of the size. Thank you. your videos have been very helpful.
Good question since I’m not looking at one but I think it’s a 32mm
Nice job being very informative on the repair thank you
Thanks again. Seeing the cups you used for the press helped a lot. Watched your video when I did the other side a few months ago and needed a refresher.
Bought moog replacement ball joints still have play in upper ball joint do you in know the spec for freeplay
In order to do this do I need the adapter kit for the press? I’m doing this over the holiday weekend and want to have everybody I need.
Having a hard trouble removing the lower ball joint can I just cut the corners with a tool
Do you recommend Cardone CV Axles for 2004 Trailblazer 4.2? The OEM cast over $300 for 1.
Great Video!! The details just illustrated why mine went bad. I know that the oil changes didn't happen and so, of course, they didn't grease what they were supposed to grease! Too bad you all aren't near my area. Nice disclosure. Will Share your channel!
Thank you for watching!
What size is the axle nut for the 2005 trailblazer. Online says 35mm or 36mm
Would you happen to know for sure?
Wassup doctor, which brand of ball joint do you use for trailblazer on your services? Could you drop a link? What you think about the moog made in turkey ones? For me it seems the most affordable better than chinese ones, even known brands i don’t trust when made in china, is like compare a simple craftsman wrench made in usa and one made in china. I am very concerned about the safety of the vehicle, i carry my family in my trailblazer, and we go everywhere with it
You make it sound and look so easy!
Man you did a great job explaining what to do.👍🏽
Hey coffee Doc, can the upper ball joint be pressed out and in without taking the entire knuckle off?
you did not mention anything about the control arms....would you recommend doing them as long as everything is apart, just because, just because.
any opinions on this...thanks
How Long Does it take to Do Both? I just found out I needed to replace mine I have a 2003 Trailblazer
Any videos on replacing the lower control arm? Not just the ball joint?
2008 trailblazer after doing upper lower ball joint steering feels quite stiff the lower ball joints dont have a alignment mark do they thanks??
Will the regular ball joint press/adapters kit from walmart or harbor freight work for this vehicle? Or will i need to purchase other adaptors/equipment plus the kit to do this vehicles ball joints properly?
Outstanding video! Mad mechanic and video skills.
your video actually helped and showed me what I need to do. unlike other videos I've watched and wasted my time. Thanks a lot
Super glad it helped. Thanks for dropping by.
very helpful thanks so much!! local mechanic wants 1100.. I got thissss
I'm wondering if I can press the ball joints with a C-clamp
What size socket is the one you used on the bottom ball joint?
Nice video! Watched the video and then replaced the ball joints on my 2004 Trailblazer. The only thing I did differently was to remove the crown on the top of lower ball joint with a hammer and chisel, since it was pretty rusted. Used Moog ball joints as you suggested. Paid a little more, but definitely worth it. Thanks for the great video!!
Good job! Thanks for watching.
R u saying the AutoZone brand is no better than the parts geek 30 dollar ones?
I truly enjoy your videos keep up the good work.
+Able Lock Thank you, your making my head swell up and my hands shake...or maybe that is from all the caffeine. Thanks for dropping by.
nice video very helpful..will you upload a replacement video for rack and pinion assembly for buick rainier 07, thanks a lot The Car Doctor, more power to you !!!
Thanks, if I get a rainier or similar in I will do that.
Just found this great site! Love the intro!
on 2007 Trailblazer with 57000 miles, do you have to replace the inner tie rods one side for 160 material and labor according to Belle Tire estimate
Tu trabajo como mecánico es de verdad limpio, preciso, bien ejectado y en síntesis el trabajo de todo un profesional. Tienes tu like por supuesto y gracias por compartir. Saludos desde México.
To all Trailblazer owners invest in a Haynes Repair Book..... A must have when doing your own repairs.
Yes indeed. The 25 bucks I spent for my book was a good investment.
Haynes 24072 (02-09 trailblazer)
Great informative step by step video. Well done, thanks.
Thanks for everything you helped me a lot
Who makes that light your using I love it, Thanks buddy
SnapOn. The smaller one on the swivel base is even better.
Thanks bud
You made that look so easy, great job. Do you run into much rust there? Now that I think about, of all the front end work that I've done to trailblazers over the years, I've only ever done one set of upper balljoints on them. Tons of lowers and tierods, hubs, etc. Do you find the uppers on these are common in your experience?
+kenman1717 ive done some uppers but not nearly as many as lower ball joints and outer tierods
Nice job! Loved the coffee commercial.
+Rick Anderson Thanks, I'm considering going to work for foldgers.
Thanks for the knowledge! Great video!
Any vids on replacing OEM lower on a 07 GMC Envoy?? Had to heat mine. Looked like plastic bubbling out the top.
Probably the grease bubbling out
Hey Car Doctor what kind of light were you using. Looked pretty bright when it was stuck to the fender.
+Matt Trotta It's a Blue Point rechargeable LED light with magnetic base. I have a couple and like them. I got them off the SnapOn truck but not sure if you can find them elsewhere. Thanks for watching.
+The Car Doctor yeah I don't work in a shop anymore so I don't see the truck. Thought maybe if it was an off the shelf unit I check it out. Thanks.
I might try this as a replacement. My SnapOn guy quit and they haven't sent a new driver yet. www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B011TM0HIM/ref=mp_s_a_1_sc_1?qid=1457624193&sr=8-1-spell&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=neibo+work+brite
great video, love the work light
Do press them in and out using the same way with the tool I always thought you press them back in from the bottom
I watched another video where a DIYer heated up the lower ball joint and pounded it out. Then, I saw his press kit and wondered why he bothered going through all that if he could have pressed it
I have a humming noise coming from the front end. I bought the trailblazer and it had 245 tires on the back, and 235s on the front. when I installed 245 Kelly's on all four, it started creating a humming sounds.
the alignment specialist mentioned possibly installing camber adjustments?
starrwarz you may have a bad wheel bearing
@@neaster3 the thing is there was no hum with 235s on the front but as soon as 245s got installed the hum started. my dad mentioned on his envoy the wheels rub. thats why im curious if installing camber adjustments provides the extra tilt to get the tire off the well??
What do I use to grease the tips? Where do I get it
can you please let me know what astro set did you use on this balljoint job. I rented ones from advance and taking off is easy but it didn't have the right size to fit good around the metal band to big or way to small
They are a pain installing. I modified the kit I had to make it work. I really don't have the proper tool. Check out the astro site or even amazon.com by application for proper adaptors. Take care
Good quality video and well instructed
Okay I missed how you placed the steering knuckle back over the lower ball joint and half shaft.
Great video. Love your channel.
What brand of "C" press are you using? I have a new Harbor Freight "C" press and I haven't used it to do this kind of job. I'm a little unsure if it will hold up. Yours looks like an OTC.
I think the one I used here is an off brand. It looks identical to the OTC and I have both so I'm not sure. They both have a lot of miles on them and work great. Never tried a harbor freight version. Does it look just like mine or lighter? The Astro adaptor kit I have works with both.
The spread on the HF tool is about 6-1/8" inside to inside mouth opening. The Astro kit I have is #7868. When I take the lower balljoint, it's a Moog, and add the adaptors in and about a 1" arm thickness it appears that I need a larger "C" frame.
You may need to use a flat adaptor on top and press it in slightly just so the top of the ball joint contacts the top adaptor then replace with a deeper one that will accommodate the joint and fit in the clamp after the joint is pressed slightly in.
Good idea.
