      @Bill Crane Are you saying instead of using my affiliate links? Lots of times, the products sold on Amazon are from dealers looking for an online outlet. Also, if my video convinces someone to make the purchase, I don't see why I shouldn't get any affiliate income from that. It does take a while to review a product and make these videos. I hope you don't mean they should watch my video and buy from a dealer just because right?

      I got my speakers about a week or two prior. So maybe a coincidence. I don't watch other reviews until I release my review so it doesn't skew my opinion. Sometimes I do after to see if we came to similar conclusions.
      I just think I deserve to make the "sale" if I'm the one who did the work to help a person decide. Many dealers are now getting smart and starting their own youtube channels. They're also realizing how difficult it is to make a good video. I know because I have relationships with some of them and they ask me for advice.
      Just don't think that we reviewers are not deserving of providing for our families as well. We work hard. Part of our income comes from affiliate sales. Some try to hide that fact, but I'm honest with my viewers. I hope you can understand that.
      I don't know about ELAC not allowing other online dealers selling online. I don't think that's true. I know some big dealers and small dealers who sell ELAC products online here in the US.

    I just found a pair of the Uni-fi 2.0 with Kanto stands for $500, A pair of the UB5's for $390, the DBR62 Reference for $450, and just missed a pair of Emotiva Airmotive speakers for $200! All this right after I bought an Elac 1010 Sub, pair of Neumi's and a Sony STRDH-190 for my garage within the month. The "The Nines" I ordered to replace The Fives just came today! Why does stuff happen like that?! The more I watch you and Erin's channel, the more of an addict I am becoming. You guys have a dream job. I've been a car guy all my life and just wanted to buy a good garage system. I start watching video's to help me make my choices. Now I'm binge watching reviews like this, and wanting to experience all this goodness for myself.
    Man, you guys should see the box my Nines came in today. UPS destroyed it! The UPS guy stood by while I unboxed them in my foyer. Not what I had in mind! I thought they made it, but found a ding/dent after he left. Still probably keeping them, but will talk to them tomorrow. In all my 53 years, I have never seen a box this badly damaged! Just had to happen to something this nice and valuable. 🙈

    Dear (potential) Elac-Owners and dear @Joe N Tell,
    has anyone had the experience to compare the Elac Uni-Fi CC U5 against a single BS U5 (the ones from the series with the satin finish)? What can I expect from the additional low end driver? Could the composition of the CC U5 drivers cause problems in a vertical position?
    I was considering moving my two BS U5s to another room, buy three CC U5 and set them up horizontally and vertically for a left-center-right configuration. Any objections as to why this could go wrong?

    I bought 40USD Google Music Chromecast to stream spotify to the Unify UB5 and the trable and Bass can be adjusted in the settings. Sounds amazing for a fraction of the price of all competitors out there. Also a cheap equalizer can do wonder and a person can adjust many frequencies.

    • @joentell
      @joentell  3 роки тому +1

      There it is. Tone controls can do a lot because they are low-Q filters. They change a wide band of frequencies (typically hinging on 1khz) together instead of trying to fix a narrow band which can cause issues.

    Great comparison as always... I love my pioneer AJs, but at some point I will upgrade just not sure with what yet... I want something with a similar sound signature but with a little bit larger sound and oomph. I wouldn’t mind a little more in the highs but I don’t want harsh speakers either. I love the warm smooth sound they have... I just wonder what brand or where to go next. I want something with larger drivers for sure at least 6” or 7” to move more air in my home theater. I listen to lots of music too, I noticed orchestral music is when the pioneer AJs tend to show their weaknesses... but for their price I can’t complain. Any brands of where you think I should look next? Basically I’m looking for more of that buttery smoothness but improved audio all around.

I’m not opposed to spending 5k or so for my front sound stage to start. I guess this is the rabbit hole we all go down when getting into this hobby. I guess I wonder what would be a significant enough upgrade without getting to far away from that warm sound these have? Have you ever reviewed ZVOX speakers?

  • @sean_heisler
    @sean_heisler 3 роки тому

    Nice review, Joe. Hey one thing I thought of in regards to the elevated treble you seem to be hearing, how much toe-in are you using? It's been noted that Andrew Jones voiced these speakers 15 degrees off axis which is not much toe-in at all when you figure that out (almost straight ahead to be honest). So, if you are still pointing them right at you like you were with the originals you might want to toe them out more. In fact, do the math and get them so your ears are exactly 15 degrees off axis of the drivers and I think you will hear a much more balanced tonality in the treble like the originals and the soundstage should widen but still retain excellent imaging. I know you know how to do that but in case others are reading this, it doesn't mean you toe the speakers in 15 degrees rather you toe the speakers inward so that your ears are 15 degrees off the perfect, straight-on axis of the drivers. Just do the math.

    • @joentell
      @joentell  3 роки тому +1

      Good point. Yes, I do experiment. If you notice from the sound demo I do, I move towards and away from the speakers changing the off-axis response. I almost always listen to Andrew Jones designed speakers off-axis because I know he optimizes for that. He mentioned that in the hour-long interview I did with him a while back.

    • @joentell

      Similar. It's more about location of the port relative to a nearby wall than it is about where it's pointing. It could be upward firing, but stuff might go into the port. This is not taking into account things like Polk's Power Port technology which aims to reduce turbulence.

    I don't like the poor sensitivity at 85db/watt.

      The low sensitivity is the sacrifice you have to make if you want a small enclosure with deeper bass. 3khz is the most sensitive hearing region so there's often a dip there. I'm not saying it's correct. +-3dB is very good and +-1.5dB is excellent

    I think the UB5's are more of a sophisticated audiophile 4ohm speaker with a rich lush high-end full of properly balanced detail. (But requiring proper placement and power) The UB5.2's seem to be designed as an answer to complaints about high-end softness, placement and power requirements... I think Andrew came to Elac originally with the intention of impressing with true musical audiophile sound. Something he is well-practiced and very good at doing. But now seems to be more focused on bringing good quality sound to those more interested in high-end response and movie watching. (Somewhat at the expense of 'sweet' music listening.) - If you are an audiophile focused on music and can appreciate the sophistication built into the UB5's (and you can power and place them properly) then I feel that they are still the better choice for silky smooth detail rich and engaging music listening.

    • @joentell
      @joentell  3 роки тому +5

      I don't know...I would think the extended top-end would be more "audiophile." The UB5's are more for that person listen to highly compressed music, in a reflective room, using a class D amp. It just smooths out all the highs.

    Who keeps giving Elac feedback that dark-ish/mellow speakers are necessarily a bad thing? I realize that brighter speakers may sound better in the showroom, but they also tend to cause fatigue. Perhaps better for home theater, but for 2 channel music I could easily argue that +3db in range you showed might not necessarily be as good as we're told it is.
    And they are killing me with the front ports. Understand on the entry-level Debut's but on a more audiophile speaker like the Uni-fi, leave the ports on the back as no one wants to hear port noise and no one is slamming them against the wall either. Fortunately the towers retain the back ports.
    And I don't like how the hardware/finish has been cheapened. Maybe we'll get a Uni-Fi 2.0 reference with a bit more attractive finish and design?
