Some deep cuts could be, like, Animal/Manwich, Skitch, and the alien and synth versions of elite soldiers.
I was bumping around on early c17 maps a few years ago and ran across a textbox for something introducing a character called Boxcar Pete(?) that was eventually replaced by the human, vortigaunt pair that you fall in on while running from the metrocops. Probably just devs entertaining themselves, though. lol

I hope you cover the ones that only appeared in concept art. The sacktick and particle storms were mentioned by Odell and Eli in some of the cut voice clips, as well. I know the stalker wasn't cut, but they were so different in the beta that I think they need to be covered.

....Its actually a good place to get the cut enemies back, explaining why there's an X mark on North America in Alyx.

The Cremator exists in the Half life 2 universe we know,the canals are full of burnt bodies,Gordon just doesn't encounter a Cremator,same with a Bullsquid

The combine assassins are something i wished were in the final game. It makes you wonder if all the surviving assassins from HL1 got turned into combine soldiers willingly or otherwise. Also i wish they found a way to include the other HL1 aliens, i think they could have easily fit in bullsquids into the canal levels
They tried with the bullsquids, it didn't really work, play testers were either easily able to kill them or were too scared to go in the water because of them.
The Assassins look cool, but they were a pain in the arse in the first game, and don't fully fit the way the combine operates in 2, like the tactics and squad movements of the combine doesn't really fit with an assassin group, or lone assassin. The snipers would be the closest to this, but they were a bit lack luster in retail too. Would've been cool if they popped out of their hiding spot when you got close and tried to kill you with close range weapons instead of just waiting for the grenade

would be cool if we see some surviving HECU member and even the assassins in HL3 now that valve released HL:A. they could be the founder and core member of the resistance that will help Gordon track down G-man and Alyx.
I wanted to see the Bullsquid and Houndeyes again, especially the icysaurus.
Icysaurus is in the retail game but get what you mean most Xen and Race X creatures are still cannon its just Gordon just never sees them probably cause of gman
the icysaurus makes a cameo in the beginning of half life 2, when your in the teleport in the water the icysaurus shows up

Not sure why it's called the ichthyosaur, since ichthyosauridae were a real family of animals.
@Scratchy Ichthyosaurids were marine reptiles, not fish. They also don't remotely resemble the Ichthyosaur in the game. Ichthyosaurus means "fish lizard" in greek, and the "Ichthyosaur" in the game's proper name is Xenotherus ichthycanthus, which means "Spined alien fish beast." And I'd liken the aquatic bullsquid more to a prionosuchus, which was an amphibian...
4:48 Odell's model was used for a character named Odessa Cubbage in the retail version, one of the resistance members in a small village helping Gordon along the way.
That's right, he's the guy that teaches you how to take down the gunships?
I remember in episode one, a resistance member asks alyx if she's kleiner's daughter. alyx replies with something like: no my father is Odessa Cubbage
Also he kinda recycled as "Russel" in Half Life Alyx

My favourite thing about the cremator is that the eyes have the black “makeup like” stain beneath the eyes. It makes me think that the creature that it once was is constantly sobbing, stuck in a constant state of sorrow and guilt as it is compelled to kill and destroy against its will and all it can do is watch
Some things to note: The combot did *not* light Gordon on fire. Its only attack that distinguished it from the final scanner is that it could should a toxic gas at Gordon when in close range. Furthermore, Wasteland scanners were somewhat unique in that they had a doubling and tripling up function. Two Wasteland scanners can attach to each other, and then attach with a third. When tripled up, they could fire lasers, but only when they're tripled up. If they're alone or doubled up, they can only fire grenades. Also, the cremator *does* have animations in the beta.
The Combine Assasins are so cool looking! Music is dope btw.
I cant remember where I saw this but I remember the crab synth being a combine made antlion guard that would turn the antlions on the combines side like the bug bait in retail half life 2

Also if the Combine already had a bug bait synth, then they wouldn't need to have the bumpers at Nova Prospekt. T

While I don't know where that came from, I do think my favorite recreation of Crab Synth is one from Garry's Mod that's basically "Antlion Guard with a machine gun and a deflector shield".

i think it was a shame that the original Combine Elite/Sniper got cut. i always think that transparent/translucent enemies look cool, and it would've been a good way for valve to promote their tech (like they do).
They definitely look awesome. But it would have been a pain in the neck to fight these camo soldiers from a distance. They would have been impossible to spot and shoot at.

@@RadiationHazardYT The way to fix that? Add a blinking red light to their visor for 30 seconds when they become invisible so that way you can atleast see and or notice they are there. Maybe it should cause a decent beeping noise too also to alert you they are invisible? Nobody knows.
the cremator was cut also from half life alyx. he would have been part an elite group that hunted

I don’t know if other people said already, but the heel springs on the combine assassin became Chell’s advanced knee replacement springs in Portal and the similar long fall boots in Portal 2. They come full circle to the assassin enemies again as a Japan only arcade version of Half Life 2 had the combine assassins themselves, and their heel springs became part of the black ops assassins in Black Mesa. One wonders if the latter got their springs from Aperture Science.

Oh yeah, definitely. I'll go in that direction (deep analysis) once I cover the Beta from top to bottom. And I assure you, there's a WHOLE lotta stuff left to cover.
The combine guard is my favorite cut character (not the trench coat gaurd) his design is so cool, there is this video called “combine gaurd attacks” where the combine gaurd chases down Gordon and I love it.

honestly, i understand why the hydra was cut but DAMN that could've been a terrifying enemy.

I don't think that the main characters that were cut or changed were that interesting, but the enemies, yes. They would've brought much more variety to the gameplay.
This is why I want a mod that restores the cut enemies. There’s so much versatility for them in the game we have now. I especially want to see the Hydra, ‘cause that’s a really neat concept.
Have you heard of the Coterminus mod? It does exactly what you ask for, and then some.
The Bullsquids (and possibly the Houndeyes) could have a reason for why they were cut. They were originally made for the Canals outside of City 17, and they were to act just like the Half Life 1 versions, and there the problem. Those enemies were made with tight environments like the halls of Black Mesa, so they couldn't work in the larger environments of Half Life 2. And they even try putting the Bullsquids in the water, but then they were too annoying to deal with, so they just cut them.
Bullsquids were also supposed to mentioned in the Lost Coast chapter, but that was cut.
But a Bullsquid is the reason how Eli lost his leg, so there that at least.
Additionally, I sense that the whole Underground Railroad plot element hadn’t necessarily been fully thought of back when these enemies were meant to appear in the canals, and after they thought that up, having Route Kanal filled up with these lumbering beasts for the player to fight made no sense (wouldn’t many of them have been killed by the resistance members manning the outposts? Unlike them, barnacles and headcrabs can hide easier, and the latter+humans means zombies). Sure, you might reasonably meet a couple of them, but not in numbers that would make them feel like a fully integrated aspect of the game rather than feature creep. As for Water Hazard, you nailed it with the ”larger environments”.
Also, bullsquids look seriously unbalanced and like they should topple over themselves, which was never a distraction in the blockier engine of HL1, but probably called attention upon itself in the more high-poly Source, especially as the outdoor environments would have them stand on top of sloped geometry rather than the flat corridors of Black Mesa.
Also, it might make the player feel cheated that he can unload on these beasts only with the pistol and the SMG, as these enemies would be gone from the game by the time the player’s arsenal is upgraded to all the cooler toys.
Unrelated to the topic but what is the music used for the intro, cut characters and outro?
Edit: It's called Border worlds by Joel Nielson made for the Black Mesa Xen soundtrack.
The early combine design was a competition between a brutalist asymmetrical carapaced aesthetic and a symmetrical modernist cold design. They both combined to create things like the Strider that are symmetrical and mechanical but still carapaced though per each character one of the aesthetics will be dominant as if they make new styles for each new abomination they get their hands on.
Also maybe they rename Judith as it sounds like Judas

I've always thought a game where you played as a rebelling combine assassin would be cool, it'd focus on fast movement and platforming, maybe with a slow motion feature or something

I wish they'd kept those enemies, especially the aliens from HL1. In retail, you pretty much only fight humanoid Combines, headcrabs, zombies and antlions. Each of them has variations, but there are pretty much only four enemies, you seldom fight anything else.
@Absame Muhammad Honestly, houndeyes and bullsquids, at least those two, could have stayed in the game. You can't tell me they couldn't have fit them into certain areas. Those zombies that were in the canals should have been replaced by bullsquids, we see the zombies so many times in the game, it makes them just annoying.

Breen had a dynamic personality, but The Consul (what I imagine) would have been more brutal, like a ruthless dictator.

The Hydra! I remember reading a preview of HL2 in a magazine ( can't remember which) which had a picture of it grabbing someone. I misinterpreted the picture though and thought it was some odd tracer reflecting the path of an odd jumping pattern. I did not notice the person was impaled. Kinda like what would be seen if a fast, acrobatic enemy had glowing jump boots or the sort. I've been wondering about that shot ever since.I first played the game. I'd begun to doubt my memory.

Lol. I had a similar situation. I saw that Randalpond video around 2003/2004 (the video with Gordon starting off at the cut Ravenholm pond area) and I always was curious as to why it never showed up in the retail game.
I know this video is a little old, but this has got to be one of my favorite Beta vids you’ve made. It honestly just gives off this feeling of sadness, of a world that never existed, of people that were never born.

It's in the pipeline. It's a bit of a headache to navigate (noclip) in HL Alpha, so that's why I'm putting it aside for now. But I will make that video one day :)

Very nice, though I think it would've been better if you recorded footage of the enemies in the beta, rather than Gmod. I know some of them aren't in the beta builds, but still. I didn't know there were people who thought the super soldiers were the mechs mentioned in Weather Control, though. I thought it was widely accepted that it was supposed to be TBot1.
Yeah, I'll try and record the Beta only next time. And about the Mechs: It's a mixed opinion from what I've seen. Most agree that it's TBot1, and some say that it's the Super Soldiers.
Suggestion: maybe some time later you could do a video on the cut stuff of the half life 2 episodes, more specifically hl2 aftermath, I feel like there's some interesting shit in there

The Combine Guard is my favorite of the unused enemies. It was pretty intimidating even just in e3_terminal
The fact combine assassins were cut from the game is iffy to me cause, if it’s obscure it would mean that there would be less R34 of it.
The Assassin was cut from HL2 but used in the Japanese Arcade game HL2 Survivor. That's why there's uh... so much "art" of the Assassin on the web.

For anyone wondering, the first piece of music is the resident evil 4 save room theme.
It would be really cool to see a 'Revamped' HL2 mod that follows the same storyline but adds in a bunch of these removed enemies as well as some of the removed weapons, and adds/revamps some of the removed maps.

I feel like one of these half life 2 beta NPCs were suppose to be for episode 3, half life alyx ending took place In the episode 2 of half life 2 so I'm thinking that half life 2 episode 3 Is going to be on VR.

Are there still people working on some sort of HL2 beta restoration mod? I've heard like a dozen different teams but never heard any of them actually finishing their mod.
Yup. There's Dark Interval and Raising The Bar Redux that I'm following. There are more too. Unfortunately, no mod has ever finished development. There is the Beta Minimalist Mod for HL1, which shows the whole HL2 Beta story.

Honestly with the combine guard I kinda picture it being place in to replace a tank or heavy ordinance, it would punch doors during a raid or it would murder protesting citizens in an act of “Containment” and “Civil Protection”.
For the consul I would see him as a man who used to be nothing more than an American politician and someone who ran for president and failed, and now well he’s more than that. He’s a dictator worse than Hitler or Stalin anyone who’s his assistant would most likely be murdered after they lost their use, Mossman is the 55th assistant to the Consul.
The Combine Assassin would be used in propaganda to mainly be a symbol of ‘feminine charm’ but in combat they would use flash bangs and be nothing but an efficient and competent Assassin, following orders without question.
The Beta Stalkers would be broken people now suffering malnutrition and disease being unable to die.
The Conscripts would be forced to follow orders other wise they’d die, but they eventually had enough with orders and fought against the combine and overall help citizens and rebels as a somewhat paramilitary for them sending in weapons and vehicles to get rid of combine.
The Combine Sniper would be silent. Deadly. Efficient. And only needing one shot.
The combine super soldier would defiantly destroy you in multiple ways, mainly removing heavy units.
The combot/scanner will just burn bob and electrocute ya.
The crab synth is a tank and a charger.
The mortar synth would be sent in to be scouting and well burning everything using just *one*
The Cremator would burn down houses and trash. Keep it clean or he will.
The hydra is mainly aquatic killing fish and people.
While making this video, I realized how versatile the whole enemy roster was. Given how huge Valve wanted HL2 to be, it would make sense. Too bad they trimmed the game down and all these enemies got cut.
E3_terminal ends with a Combine Guard busting down the door to the room you're hiding in.

from what ive heard of the cremators is that there 7 feet tal and show no emotion and there made in factories by children and were cut for being to difficult to kill
