In the beginning, he was anxious to be a good husband and with O-Lan he felt he can be that. Plus, O-Lan was a tough cookie throughout the book and film and had hard decisions to make if I had to make that decision it would not be so easy. especially when it came to survival or starving to death. Performances by these actors were amazing. So much so "Luise Rainier won an Oscar for her performance.
Everything I've ready by Ms. Buck has been written in the 3rd person, but I love how she conveys the inner workings of the mind of each character and their values. It's not as great as "The Good Earth", but another book of hers that I enjoyed was "The Hidden Flower" -- a love story of an American GI and Japanese woman and the poisonous legacy of US racist policies that challenge the legitimacy of their relationship. In dealing with multi-racial relationships it's quite ahead of its time for when it came out in the 1950's.
I had to read The Good Earth in 6th grade and now I am a junior in high school. Every time I pick up gardening again I remember this book but for the longest time could not remember the name. Thank you for this video might have to purchase and read the book again!
Oh, I agree I only scratched the surface! The problem, of course, is there are sooo many books left to metaphorically juice, so it's a balancing act between doing justice to the one I'm reading and moving on to the next.
I loved the book by Pearl S. Buck "The Good Earth." The movie followed pretty well except the last part of the story which was very devastating and shocked me. However, I learned so much from this Chinese story and what this family was like. Very wonderful read.
Only natural light, although I did record using a log profile (s-log 2) and set my metering mode to center so my face wouldn't be dimmed by the backlighting.
I'm amazed you were able to find Wang Lung to be an aspirational character at any point.
I thought he was a lost fool

A very well thought out review. The Good Earth is my favorite book of all time.

Glad you enjoyed it! I would recommend a reread!
You didn't do it justice! There's so much more juice in here. Nice job, but maybe go deeper next time :)
