    Very well thought out summary and explanation. I could definitely see and agree with your opinons and understanding of what this book was saying. Though I could further your thought that she was the good earth, and the men she took care of where simple humans. What Wang Lung took from her was precious, because it was her hope, it was her dreams that he sold. In life we go through good times and bad, but we never take the time to really appreciate what we have, because we don't understand the true value of the thing. We see the earth as something we can claim and control, and being what it is the earth does what its intended to do, but its never enough to simply love it and take care of it in return. Instead we create societies and try to reach heights that in the end, it never mattered. In the end Wang Lung's work gets sold, but O-Lang's work continues. From this story we can learn that we need to relearn the value of life, of good life.
    Another great story to compare this to would be a story by Benjamin Franklin called, The Whistle.

    So, what if a man gains the whole world and loses his soul?

    • @stanleystrose
      @stanleystrose  3 роки тому +3

      The world is temporary. Gaining the world means nothing. However, the soul is eternal. A man who gains the world will only have it for a Time and then everything that he had gathered will have to go back. The soul, however, if he truly gains it, is his forever.

    What got me was when he took O-lan's two pearls away from her and made her cry. That broke my heart. I just wanted to punch him.

    Thank you for your extremely well done Review!)(Pearl S. Buck often taught, that dedication to a Husband and Home 'to the extreme' ; is in fact a Woman who is only preparing her future Grave.) [ American Women we're so horribly degraded on every level of Society, after Pornography was Legalized in 1953 ; that the #1 cause of Death in America of Women by 1967 was being beat to death by Men.][With the likes of Actor Sean Connery ,doing an Interview with Barbara Walters stating you must hit Women, as they won't be quiet! ](By 1982, the #1 cause of Death of Women in America's Workplace ; was being beat to Death by Men. )( There is a Movie starring Woody Harrelson called 'NORTH COUNTRY' ; depicting a Story based on Truth, of how approximately 30 Women working in a Mine in Minnesota, fought back against severe physical, verbal abuse, by approximately 300 Men, who were trying to Bully them into quitting. Which was happening from the U.S.Postal Office to J.C.Penny!)( These Women started a Class Action Lawsuit that change American Workplaces to Zero Tolerance for these types of Abuses, and stronger helped America get the Domestic Violence Laws we have today!)(Y.Tb. use to have Documentaries on the utter Degradation of Women by American Media in the 50's through mush of the '80's!)(Massive negative Laws passed against Women had begun very strongly in the 1950's! There were Double Standards everywhere for Men and Women!)( Therefore Women had to fight back with everything they had in them! )( They changed these evil Laws, then began entering into every Profession, including Politics,and left the traditional HomeMaker Roles behind by the millions ; never to return.) (Your Review I loved ; but also I noticed you are viewing the Story from a young man in modern day America.)( I am a Senior Citizen, and lived through the time period in America where 85% of Women we're HomeMakers ; as they were expected to be, and also closed out of approximately 90% of Jobs.)( Our fight, gave us, what young people think has ALWAYS been in America.)( Pearl S.Buck having lived so much of her Childhood, and a lot of her Adulthood in China, wrote in her 88 Novels of the Chinese Culture she knew.)(She also stated long ago Marxism only creates a Bloodbath, and Crimes Against Humanity.)( She died having written one final Novel taking place in China in the late 1960's, early 1970's, during it's Bloodbath called 'The Cultural Revolution')( I hope you will do more Reviews on some of her Novels.)( I would love to hear you to do a Review of her Novel 'The Devil Never Sleeps')(&)( When you get a chance ; listen to the Song by Helen Reddy " I Am Woman! Hear Me Roar!)( It was the Anthem that helped Women stay strong, to get equal Rights, afforded to us by The U.S.Constitution!)

      I 100% believe he read some badly written SparkNotes article before this, he didn't read it. He made it out to be a surprise to Wang Lung and Olan. It wasn't at all. He said they were both happy because slaves didn't get to have kids and poor people didn't have wives or something? That's not true at all, slaves had plenty of children, it's part of how great houses continued to keep slaves cheaply.. they would use the kids as slaves from a very young age. Because they owned them. They would often be the kids of the Lord's of the house (as young as they want, on both sides). She wasn't grateful, she was scared and out of her element. He was excited and scared. But he wasn't grateful, he was too vain to be grateful. He would've been grateful if she had bound feet and delicate features. I had to stop at the part where it was almost described as a 1950's brochure on the ideal family. Been my favorite book since 2003, read it at least monthly.

    This is really good, but I take exception with you putting o’lan on a pedestal because, ultimately, her contribution to her husband’s wealth came as a result of her being a thief. Not admirable!
