im having a lot of trouble carving into basswood against the grain. the wood just chips and the cuts dont come out right!! any advice? you think my tools arent good enough?

With your thumb locked against the handle, the blade will never come in contact with your thumb. 25+ years of chip carving and I've never cut myself. Thanks for commenting

I'm sure you know what you're doing but i'd be really worried about the blade slipping as i'm drawing in into my palm.
Is there a way you make this safer? Or just practise?
