  • Man, I see this question come up way too often: which should I get, the 27mm f2.8 pancake or the 18-55mm 'kit' lens? I took both lenses on a 12 hour walk to gather my thoughts on them, get in some killer shots of tall buildings to make some big prints, and ramble on about who each is for!
    Leave some comments with your thoughts and keep in mind that all of this is just my opinion and views. If you bought one, and I didn't agree it was the right way to go, who cares! I love them both, so you win anyway in my book.

    The 27 is way more portable, which is why it is my most used lens. Love it! Nice to see you using an xe1. I bought one last year and love it.

      I really really wanted this to be my most used lens, being able to stick it in your pocket is just so fantastic. However in practice, it was far too narrow for day to day use and too wide/slow for low-light or portraits: can't take a selfie, can't take a group shot usually, forget about use indoors, focusing is very unreliable in low light and very loud in video, I found I always brought it with me, but never used it. I'm putting it up for sale. Conversely, I bought a 13mm F1.4 recently from Viltrox, despite it's huge size and weight, I constantly gravitate towards it for the magical photos it gives, the other frequently used lens is the Fuji 35mm F2 for portraits with great creamy bokeh, it just feels so great to use too.

    You got the best Fuji ever made. Good job. I sold my xpro1 after seeing the XE1 was a smaller , newer version with a flash.

  • @stevieb7121
    @stevieb7121 3 роки тому +7

    Interesting. I kept the 27mm and sold the 18-55. I also bought the 15-45 as it's much smaller and lighter than the 18-55, plus 15mm at the wide end I find is more useful. The build quality of the 15-45 won't win any prizes but it's optically good enough and, if it breaks, it's relatively cheap to replace. I'd prefer the 15-45 even more if it was a manual rather than power zoom.

    • @forgottencameras
      @forgottencameras  3 роки тому +1

      Yea the power zoom kills it for me, even if having 15mm is tempting. I'm going to have to check out how it is at 15mm and see about giving it a shot. No pun intended.

      I did the exact same thing. I never got good results with 2 different 18-55. I sold them and purchased the 15-45, it's way sharper. I don't care for the power zoom but the photos are nice. I also own the 27mm which is a wonderful lens.

  • @boozelala

    I own both these lenses, and although I feel the 27mm is a bit sharper and has more contrast, the one I use when shooting with intention is the "kit"lens. I only use the 27 when I take my camera with me just because I want a camera with me. Love both lenses! I can;t bring myself to buy the 16-55, I'm just not sure if I want to be dragging around a big lens like that on my tiny X-T30.

    • @forgottencameras
      @forgottencameras  2 роки тому +2

      The more I go back and look at stuff and process stuff from this shoot, the more I am noticing the contrast difference. The 27mm is a better lens. In the grand scheme of things, it's not that great, (actually prefer the output from the old Sigma 24mm Ultrawide II circa early 90's), but the difference is there and it gets more apparent as I sit and stare at stuff, and figure out which images are more satisfactory than others.
      It sounds pedantic, but when you want to print something like 24x36, it means the difference between a satisfactory image and trash.

      I have the 16-55 and really I got it for landscape use. That said, I haven’t gone out and done any serious work with it. As a walk around lens it’s way too heavy; the 18-55 or 18-135 are better choices, in the one lens category. Currently I carry the 18-55 on camera and the 55-200 in the bag. But if I were to carry just one lens on my X-T3 it would be the 18-135.

    I have both. The 27mm lives on my x-e2, the super small/light 15-45mm Fujinon lives on my x-t20, the 18-55 shares duty with my Fujinon f2 primes on my x-t2.

  • @JohannesLabusch
    @JohannesLabusch 3 роки тому +5

    Argh, I screwed up my 27mm. Tried to be cool by using a metal screw-in cap. It fit pretty snugly, and I had to exert some strength to attach and remove it. Now, when I turn the camera on, I almost invariably get the dreaded "turn camera off and on again" error message until I manually push the front part of the lens in. Only a question of time until I murder the motor that way. Why do I have to be such a poser!

    • @forgottencameras

    thanks for an interesting video! ....I just got my 18-55mm 2 weeks ago and it has now become my walk around lens on my xt1 and the 27mm is glued to my XE1....and I take them out for different reasons, but lately the 18-55 gets my nod for spontaneous landscapes and I realised that I used it mostly on around 18-23....and around 30-35mm...so the 27 sits perfectly in the middle ...and then I still got the 50mm range covered if needed :)

    I almost never use the JPEG output, but I'll often use a B&W film sim just so the display is in B&W -- sometimes even when I'm not intending the final result to be B&W, but viewing it that way helps me see the tones, shapes, etc.

    Thanks for the comparison. Nice architectural photos. Any reason most of your shots were f5.6? I always go higher to make sure there is detail in the sky but maybe I’m wrong about that. I noticed your photos didn’t seem to have an issue with it.

    • @forgottencameras
      @forgottencameras  3 роки тому +2

      I have found that, on a crop sensor, f5.6 is fine, as the DOF is similar to f8 in FF. Also, focus is at infinity anyway, since the buildings are far enough away.
      I'm going to try it again soon with a longer lens (50-100 f1.8), so I will see if it is any different.
      5.6 is also around where peak sharpness is on these lenses and diffraction shows up on a crop sensor sooner; with 5.6, no risk of that.

      THAT might be a wise choice; 15mm is really wide and the quality of the lens is still pretty good. Hell, that might be a better choice for a 'whatever' lens on a second 16MP camera than the 27mm if you don't need the wide aperture.

    Im my opinion the 18-55 is not a professional grade optic. I put it on the X-T2 and compared it to a real pro lens, the Olympus 12-40 f2.8 PRO on a E-M5 Mark II. The Olympus optic was sharp no matter what right into the corners. Unlike the XF 18-55 :) It was in comparison blurry in particular focal length and picture parts.
