Which prime lens is the actual best? Hmmmm...
I have both lenses and I often find myself shooting with 27mm than 35mm. Form factor is major thing I guess and 40mm eq. is pretty good for both street and portrait. Newer 27mm is WR, which is great. The only downside that it has quite noisy auto focus, which is not good for video shooting. Also I found that 35mm is slightly faster with auto focus and very quiet. My everyday set up is X-E2S with 27mm WR.

The 35 f2 has plenty of tonah for me. I love the size and image from it. It’s a special lens.

Very well said Omar! I got my X-Pro3 last year with the 18 f1.4, and followed up with a 35 f1.4. As I like to do street snaps, the 18 f1.4 WAS my go to lens as 35 is a bit too tight for my taste. But soon i figured that despite all the good things about the 18 f1.4, it is just a bit too clumsy as an EDC. After much struggle between the 23 f2 and 27 Mk2 I decided to go for the 27, which mathematically is actually the middle point between 18 and 35. It has since been glued to my X-Pro3 as I bring it out every day without much weight, and only under specific circumstances (18 for landscape/late night photos, 35 for portraits) will I bring along my other lenses. Image quality difference is minimal, and if people are looking at the corners of my photos I guess I have done something wrong. Once you go pancake, you never go back!
I am in a similar situation. I have the XT3. Also have the 18 F.1.4 and 33 F.1.4. The two lenses are perfect for wedding photography. But they do get heavy and bulky for everyday use. I just placed an order for the 27mm pancake due to its size. Now I am just waiting for the 27mm to arrive. It's sold out everywhere.

Very true. Also, sometimes though, a new bit of kit can kickstart a fresh bout of enthusiasm. Give us fresh eyes if you know what I mean 😊
This is also very true, if you dont enjoy using your camera you wont use it. If its too heavy and too big, you wont carry it with you, so maybe get a smaller kit. It helped me A LOT, really got me going again with photography after not picking up a camera for years. Get a camera you dont wanna put down.@@PhilipBallGarry
I know I'm not helping with the endless collection of lenses we own, but once you decide to go with a lens that isn't a pancake lens, then the new 33/1.4 is an absolute dream. I don't know what it is about that lens but it made me fall in love with that focal length in a way that the 35/2 didn't, and the bokehliciousness is definitely there as a bonus!
I'm looking at the 33 for my first prime. I have the 18-55, 70-300, and a Laowa 65mm 2:1 macro already, but I'm in love with the bokeh my adapted ancient Pentax Asahi 50mm can create even at its lowest aperture of 1.7.

Just got into fuji from nikon and i could afford only one lens, after a week of a race between the viltrox 33 1.4 and the fuji 35 1.4… i decided to spend the little extra and get the fuji 33 1.4.
I’ve been shooting on a 35mm prime on apsc for 20y, and i’m amazed at what just 2mm less can do at that focal lenght, it retains the flexibility for closeups and portraits but it’s a lot easier to capture the whole scene.
I love pancakes but plz no 27 or 18 on apsc, 23/24 is good but i prefer a 35 on FF than a 23 on apsc because of perspective.

I have both lenses and the 35mm is by far the most versatile of the two. You can shoot environmental, portraiture, landscape, all kinds of subjects and it's built like a tank. If you are talking street photography only, the discreet size and sharpness of the 27mm, and its 41mm equivalent focal length (which is closer to true "normal", or what your eyes actually see), is a bit more ideal IMO.
Hey so I’m planning on travelling to indochina and then perhaps on to Hong Kong or Japan and want to be able to take decent landscape shots and general travel photography, but I also want to be able to take good street photos at night especially if in HK or Tokyo. I currently have an XC 15-45mm which has a widest aperature of f3.5 which I use for general stuff and the XF 27mm 2.8 pancake for shooting on the go. Would the pancake cut it at night compared to an xf/xc 35mm f2? Considering adding the 35mm but not sure if the extra spend will get me that much more low light performance over the 27mm? Really want to get the dark neon aesthetic, feel like maybe even the XF 23mm f2 would be ideal but perhaps not as versatile as the the 35 outside of street stuff?
@@patrickmonkman8151 Hi Patrick, it depends on your body as well. If you have any of the IBIS Fuji bodies (X-S2, X-T4, X-T5, or X-H line) the 27mm should be bright enough for low light, and considering it's one of Fuji's sharpest (if not, the sharpest) compact lenses, the IQ more than makes up for any low-light noise. If you don't have IBIS, yes, then either of the XC/XF 35mm should be great, but I would say if you're used to shooter wider angle, than the 23mm f2 is probably more suitable. Also, I believe the original 23mm f1.4 R lens is at an amazing price at 699 right now - that lens has incredible images and works amazing for low light. Also, you may consider any of the Viltrox offerings for 23 or 35 - they've gotten great reviews. I don't have either, but I have their 85mm and its quality is quite good. Hope that helps!
For me the 27 main strength is it’s size. There a no way around that. It may be a great lens for day time, but for night street photography might do the job depending on you iso tolerance. Imagine this night scene.
If you set your speed for 60, and your aperture for 2.0, you’ll have to use a iso 3200. Since you have the 27mm you’re limited to 2.8 , so your iso has to go to the next step which is 6400. And so on.
I have shoot some of my favourite images at higher iso . They’re not technically perfect, but they are amazing, but hard to come by.
I have the 23 f2 (love it) , and seriously considering getting the 27 just for the size.
Between the 23 and the 35 wich is more versatile? I’ve got my answers in camera manufactures. They’re cameras with fixed non zoom lenses are wider than 50mm full frame equivalent.
It’s harder with a wider lense, it’s easier with a telephoto but it will be less in your frame.

@@pimentovski2011 Agreed! The 27mm instantly turn most Fuji bodies into a pocketable camera. It's also crazy sharp as I mentioned, so that helps somewhat with IQ in low light

For me, I used the 35 and 27 opposite for you, but agree, if I only have one lens, it's the 35. Having said that, just came back from a trip with all 5 of my lenses, and the 16-80 never came off the T-5
I have some love for both lenses, but the 27mm makes me a better photographer for one reason. It's so small I take my camera out more and use it!
This, the 35mm lens works better, but the 27mm is so small you tend to carry your camera more. I have both but will sell the 35 as I don't use it.

Love the techno intro and outro! For me, the form factor is why I would go for the pancake lens. It's unique in that regard and makes the camera a slip-in-your-pocket camera when out and about.
I am a big fan of the 27mm, my minimum, always with me, kit is the 16 f2.8, 27 f2.8 and the 50 f2.
The 27 I got in near mint condition for only $230! I put this on my camera when I went a light “carry with me” camera to capture high quality snaps. The 27 focal range is such a great middle ground between what I think is the too wide 23, and sometimes too tight 35mm. It sounds like we use it the same way!! 27 is the best for snaps and lightweight!
I got it used mint condition, but silver version for $134 😁 still looking for xe2 or xe2s silver version to match the combo

wonderful matching in terms of ergonomics, almost X100 alike.
Anyway, the images of 27 seem flatter, compared to other XF lenes, even the kit 18-55 seem better.
Or is it because under my under-skill hands?😂
@@pitiwong1 It's probably because of the focal length and not very fast aperture? If you're not shooting something close at 2.8 there really is hardly any bokeh on this lens. You can get more "depth" with tighter focal lengths on the 18-55, especially from 35 on.

I just bought an X-T20 and I was split between these lenses. It was harder to find a used 27mm so I went 35mm. But I still wouldn't mind either.
The 27mm is great for street photography (usually at f5.6 where it almost becomes a point-and-shoot that's deadly sharp). And because of its size and weight, I'm actually more inclined to take my camera out with me with this lens on.
You mentioned the Viltrox lenses...they are really fantastic! The 85 creates amazing sharp images and I have their 23 as well and like it
I quite literally put together an X-E2+XF27mm none WR specifically because of this video, I wanted something small for street photography and with lots of tactile buttons I can use with winter gloves, been loving the combo!
Still rocking the 35mm 1.4. Haven’t felt the need to look at anything else.
Combined with what body? On the newest sensor the focussing is way better. Got the x-trans 1/3/4 and the later makes it a Lot easier to use. Especially with moving objects like my dog or nieces.

Just browsing through YT videos here on film 🎥 making and camera lenses and came across yours, I find your video very refreshing, well put together and you have a positive ora about you that captures the attention of a viewer. I like the fujifilm camera that your holding, my father use to have a few when I was growing up. I'm strongly looking into getting back into videography with an emphasis on filming so I refreshing my memory with YT videos and hopefully renew my passion once again thank you
Truly very inspirational! I just got the 27 mm after waiting 6 months for it, so now I can finally start using our X-T200, as the kit lens was so bad in my opinion. I hate smartphones so I'll just use this camera as my pocket camera. I'll just put it to f5.6, thanks for the advice:-)

I had the 27mm 2.8 pancake. Sold it back, and got myself an older 35mm 1.4. Couldn't be happier !
The former lens was great. Don't get me wrong. I just wanted an extra stop for night photography and a bigger lens, as the pancake lens was too small.
Plus, the 35 1.4 has something !
For me 18/2 + 35/1.4 are the best combo (both also use the same 52mm filters/pro mist for nights).
Tried 23/2 & 35/2 and sold them both, they are too boring, sterile and not inspiring to shoot after a while.
Never tried 27mm but seems cool and compact.

I prefer the 35 f2 for its better AF and sharpness. Cant go wrong with either tho!!
As you said, the18-55mm is ideal for street photography if you don’t wanna carry around a back of lenses.
I have grown to love the 40mm equivalent on Olympus. I use the 27mm on Fuji and have the xc35 if I need more bokeh or in low light
you mean the 20mm pancake? That's basically the same as the 27mm on Fuji

Only reason for the 27 over the f2 line is if you want to pocket say a E or T20, T30, or T30ii. The f2 line is better is as good or better in every other respect.
I am an amateur since 1983 and I never felt comfortable with the 50mm (in FF) focal length. My comfort zone was always between 35-40mm. Therefore, my answer is in favor of the 27mm.
I have both! I like 27mm better because it's more compact and the focal length. I also put it on the X-E4 so it's a super light and small package

27mm f2.8 WR for me is size and weather sealing. I have an X-Pro2 and I cycle tour. I do have the 35mm f2 and I love it but there is something special about the slightly wide 27mm focal length. I have a 65mm on a 120 TLR which I love and it is nearly the same equivalent focal length. Your youtube videos and what I learned there were several one of the reasons I went with a Fujifilm Camera. The compact size is a huge reason I want this lens in my kit which means I can carry it under my jacket without issue. By the way I have yet to acquire one but it appears that Fujifilm has fixed their production line problem with respect to 27mm WR.
I do really enjoy the 40mm focal length when I am out on my walks to recharge. I was lucky to find the bundle of the X-E4 and the 27mm WR last fall. Really nice when I want the small kit. I do have the X-H1 and the newer 1.4s, 33 & 18, when I want to get the low light or bokeh. But I find myself using the 27mm more, as I do like the simple kit. ...oh but wait, there is also the 50mm f2, that guy....just love that one too. That 75mm equiv, yummy.
35mm f2 was my first prime, then i bought 27mm. I like 27mm better, the focal length on 35mm is to tight for family stuff. I sold my 35mm f2 to get 23mm f1.4, couldn't be happier 👌
I went out shooting at the weekend with my Xt30ii and the 35mm lens, using primarily a 1:1 ratio and I absolutely love the results.
I have just bought the 27mm though and am looking forward to trying it out.
I bought 27mm for the size. Pairing this up with xt30 fits into my pants pocket
my current dilemma is Fuji 27mm vs Sigma 30mm. So close in focal length. I haven't decided yet. I love my 27mm on the X-Pro2
For me the 27mm is a bit sharper wide open. The 35 (and also the 23) are not so sharp wide open.
talking about close focus distance, the 23mm has an incredibly small close focus distance, I was kinda surprised by that.
Also worth noting that the 35mm exists in a XC version which costs half the price of the the XF version (both the 35 and 23) and is 30% cheaper than the 27mm (still half the cost of the v2 WR version)
As a rule of thumb though, pretty much all fuji lenses will be sharp enough for 90% of people, even the cheaper ones like the XC zooms (they represent a wonderful value as well if you can live with the darker apertures. The 50-230 is REALLY sharp, more than the 16-50). I mean even the fuij lens that is considered by many to be "the least sharp" in the Fuji lineup, the 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 is actually very very sharp and only gets a little soft in the corners wide open when you zoom in, and even then it's not really distracting at all
Fuji shooter are fortunate to have such sharp lenses at that "low" of a price (they still tend to cost more than your typical kit lens / zoom from Sony/Canon/NIkon)

The OG 27 and the E2s were my first step into fujifilm. It's such a great combo. With complimenting colour rendition between the processor and the glass. I'm yet to love anything from fuji more than it, except maybe my X70.

50mm equiv focal length is great if you're only ever going to get one lens, but lately I've been finding I either want something tighter or I want something wider. I can see why you might throw the 18-55 on the camera and call it a day.

I specialy like the 27mm because of the natural rendering of perspective in town landscapes. It equals my very much loved Summicron C 40mm on the nice small Leica CL. It was my favorite camera in the seventies and eighties.

I feel like confidence (and intention) about how close you want to get to people is a big factor in chosen lens. Like you say - focal length. And like you say about that decision about if you're going for subject separation, or actual scenes.
I already own 35/2 but 27 tempts me all the time. I think I'm finally gonna try used one and see how it works. Eventually selling it later shouldn't generate any loss with current gear prices.
Even if the 35mm f/2 is faster, wider angle means more room for cropping later.
Hey Omar - I have a Fuji video idea that I don’t think you’ve covered yet. And it was kind of a revelation for me. If you have AF+MF enabled, it overrides the Release/Focus Priority if you have it set to Focus Priority. Lots of people (me included) complain that AF-S misses sometimes even when Release Priority is set to Focus. In my case, this was 100% due to the AF+MF setting. Disabling AF+MF, my AF-S focus misses disappeared. And it’s not mentioned in the user manual, that I can find.

I find what focal length or FOV you prefer will depend a lot on where you are taking pictures as much as what type of pictures. Personally I was a huge fan of 35mm lenses in my early film days, but then most of my photography was done in the local landscapes around Oxford, England where I grew up. Several decades later, I have to force myself to use a 23mm on my Fujis, and when I do I almost always use them in 1:1 crop mode and then only for landscapes. It is just too wide for my local area. My XF 35mm f2 though is great, it cuts out a lot of distracting foreground. Go into the local towns though and it is too narrow (we are not blessed/cursed with wide boulevards in the UK), and I find 27mm to be perfect. I once made the mistake of going to Trogir Island in Croatia with just a Nikon FA and 50mm f1.8 (I thought it would be a nice versatile setup) and it was almost useless for getting any good shots as the streets were far too narrow. A 35mm or 40mm would have been much better.
I split my Fujis according to which lenses I intend to take with me :-
First X-T1 - XF 16mm f2.8, Viltrox 23mm f1.4, XF 35mm f2, Viltrox 56mm f1.4
Second X-T1 - adapted MF lenses
X-E3 - XF 16mm f2.8, XF 27mm, XF 60mm
X-H1 - everything else, mostly adapted long telephotos for birds and bugs

I just want to look 'super-cool' Omar 9:30. At the moment I only have the excellent 18-55 f2.8-4 lens which is fine for walkabout images. That 35mm f2.0 looks very good too-have you ever used the 35mm f2.0 XC version? If so, how do you rate it? I have also got one eye on the XF 33mm f1.4 for that bokeh-licious look, but of course that is expensive!
I've got 18-5mm , 35mm f2 and 50mm f2.. I was thinking of using the 27mm as my goto when traveling light for street. But, I haven't seen any videos of how the 27mm looks on fujifilm xs10. Can you have it in your jacket ? Got any videos when u can see that ?

Sorry, I have very little use for the Fuji 27mm or 35mm focal length prime lenses. I prefer to use a 16/23/56mm prime kit. On those rare occasions when I need 27 or 35mm focal lengths, I use a Fuji 16-55mm f/2.8 zoom.
I've got the 27mm too, the "MK1" as I call it. It spends most of it's time almost welded to my X-E1. And my X-E1 is nearly almost always in my pocket (vs the X-T2 which is almost always in it's bag). What does this say about me 🤔. Might be time to sell up and get the X100VI 😂.

I own the original 27mm F/2.8 and have used the XF35 F/2
I honestly did not like the focal length of the 27mm, the photos were great and no complaints with that, i just didn't like that FOV
Back in the day, my walk around camera was an XT-10 and my lens of choice for general purpose walk around a city lens, was the 18mm F/2, i know some hate on it but i love this lens, and my go to for almost everything else was (and still is) the XF 35 F/1.4... now we move on a few years and I shoot with the XT-3 and my walk around lens is the 16-80 F/4, i love the 50 mm for portraits and low light so i still use the 35mm F/1.4 for almost everything else.
However i also own the XC 35 F/2, and i could not tell the difference between the XF 35 F/2 and XC 35 F/2 in photo quality
If i was to pick up a XE2/XE3/XE4/XT20/XT30 etc and got 1 prime it would be the XC35 F/2, yes there is no aperture ring, no WR (but neither are the bodies) but at £169.00 it is less than half the price of the 27mm F/2.8 old (£359) and the 27mm F2/8 WR (£379) .
If i was buying a new XE4, and wanted the 27mm, I'd probably buy it in the kit with the camera to save £150 ish compared to buying them separately
If money was no object (and assuming i owned nothing) and i was buying a new XT-4, and i was looking for 2 primes i'd be buying the 18mm F/1.4 and the 33mm F/1.4
My opinion for any 2 lens kit for general use as cheap as possible, is a good zoom and a fast(ish) prime, if it has to be a pancake, the XC15-45 kit lens looks interesting but i have never used it that plus the XC 35 F/2 is the cheapest kit you can get on a fuji?
I’ve had both and sold the 23. imo the 27 has better image quality, is smaller and lighter and has a more universal focal length. It is also better looking on my X-T5. I gladly gave up one f stop and silent focus for these benefits.

The AF motor in the 23/35mm is leagues better, the 27mm is an archaic coffee grinder that Fuji should be ashamed of - especially in the 2021 WR version. Before anyone says pancake, just look at the cheapo 24mm EFS with usm. Yes, it is a nice pancake, yes it is a 40mm equivalent…
When the Fujifilm X-E4 came out in March 2022 I also preordered the Sigma 30mm f1.4. But then I changed my mind. It wasn’t price but the fact it was a fast lens. I don’t need a fast lens. For someone who started in the late 1950s a 2.0 lens would have a very fast lens. But in October 2022 that lens went on sale. Discounted $75. I changed my mind. I used the reasoning that my normal SHOULD be a FAST lens.
What can I say.
The Sigma 30mm f1.4 has never been off the camera since I received it in late October. And now the Fujifilm 27mm f2.8 is backup.
Enough said. No wait, that lens brought back the fun. Now enough said.

My choice would be the X100V for 23mm street stuff, and an X-T5 with a 35mm f2 for nifty 50 style (unfortunately not price) shooting.
X-E series + 7Artisans UFO 18mm, real point and shoot for street :D
not the best quality images, but it makes your camera pocketable and ready to shoot all the time :P

Well, I guess you can get a Ttartisan 27mm and the XC35mm for like £300! I'm thinking of getting both with that price ahahah
X-E3 + 27mm and my X70 is for me the ultimate travel set up.... i can literally fit both in my pocket and i have a 35mm and a 41mm right there.... of course the 27mm doesn't have the best image quality.... but test charts rarely make great photos
when you are doing these videos, do you use a particular AF focus mode on the camera? obviously you are using eye or face detect in continuous, but didn't know if you found any of the other AF settings to be helpful
You mentioned before, although I forgot why, you didn't get the X100V, but wouldn't it be a better setup in terms of features and costs if you stick with the XT20/30 with the 35mm and longer lenses, but then use the X100V + WCL-100 instead of the 18mm + 23mm + 27mm combo? I mean you get better image quality with the X100V, and you also get the size of the 27mm pancake?
This is what I got actually, just downgraded from the XT4 to XT30ii, but keeping my X100V and the WCL. The XT30ii size and flip screen just makes it much more enjoyable than the XT4 despite it's shortcomings. Plus, I get 2 camera bodies for not much more in price. Not to mention the leaf shutter, ND filter etc, etc. I can still use the 16-80mm for occasional videos.
The 27 is sharper, has closer focus distance...and has about the same compression @2.8 that the 23 has @f2. The 27 on an X-E camera is actually the same size as an X100
My question would be 27 f2.8 or 23 f2? 27 and 35 are addition to each other...27 and 23 are more of competition. I own 27. Sold 23 f2.
If AOV is your only consideration then for me it's 27mm (41mm FF equiv.). For how I see it's perfect.
I checked my photos. 90% 35mm, >5% 27mm. I like the size of 27mm but always grab 35mm.
Just got the older 27mm lens and the small EF-X8 flash for $100 while selling a camera today. I’m glad I nabbed it.
35mm is a must if you are going to buy just one prime. Why? Anything lower would distort portraits. In the end though, 23 and 50 are needed.
I somehow managed to find a mint-condition x100v for "just" twice the price of the 27 WR. So that was the end of that debate 🙂

35 1.4mm on a XT-3 body is surprisingly satisfying. It improved my the lenses AF compared to my Xpro1.
27 for me purely for the size and convenience.

Just bought the 27mm to go with my “new” X-E2 that i bought for walk-about, street camera to augment my X-T4. I have echo what someone else said Omar - you really NEED to try the 33mm 1.4 and then tell me which is better - that lens our your beloved 35mm. I bet you lunch at Delmonico’s that the 33mm will AMAZE you!!!

These are all on the official list that says it will resolve with the 40mp sensors

I will get the 30mm f1.4 from Sigma when I can afford it. I prefer the angle of view of 30mm vs 35mm. 35mm is too narrow.

I got my xf 35mm f2 and I love it BUT I want the 27mm! It’s too expensive for me though right now

The Zeiss Touit 32mm is the only lens I regret selling. I liked the colors better from that lens than the original 35mm 1.4.
If ill be shooting in a concert venue. Darkish and im in the middle-front ish area. Do you think the pancake lens will suffice? I'd be sneaking my camera xD
I only have the older 27mm, because of it’s size. But when I turn the camera off (to spare battery) the apeture resets in A priority mode. I don’t know why this happens… The lenses I own with apeture rings don’t do that. So, when you think about buying the 27mm, and the budgets lets you to, buy the newer version! :)

I played around with my 18-55 for awhile, as it turned out, most of my pictures were in the 27-30mm focal range, but I bought a 23mm f2, but I'm thinking of swapping it for a 27mm WR as the 23 is just a little too wide for a standard, and not wide enough for a wideangle, which is why I have a 14mm F2.8
I love the 27mm, but the autofocus is noisy and hunts a bunch. I only shoot single point. Well, I mostly shoot that way with my xe3 anyway.
But I love the 40mm equivalent focal length and the pancake form.
I'd buy the 27mm and see how you like it before getting rid of the 23mm.
For portrait and travel use, which focal length should I pick between the 27mm and 35mm?

My XT20 came with 27 & 18-55 but as I wasn’t using much sold it & bought 35mm. Both are really nice but I do prefer the 35mm
For me it’s the new Sigma 30mm f1.4. No aperture ring but that’s fine on the X-S10.
