      Shot bro! I keep threatening to re edit this one so it's a little more stream line

    Well done mate, I did a nice sarong inlay on my last board.I have been making boards for well over 50 years. I now have what I am told is terminal asophegael cancer. Probably caused by fumes, dust etc. I was never a smoker and always surfed, very healthy, till this came along. I was slack with my P.P.E..
    Keep wearing that mask my friend and get some extractors, all the best.

      Hey Michael! Really sorry to hear that! That’s the scary reality of working in this kind of environment with these types of materials. I try my best with the PPE and extractors are definitely on my list of upgrades for the future. Appreciate you leaving the comment, all the best to you too!

    You should invest in surfacing veil for covering up your logos and peel ply for your cloth inlay. Good Job 👍👍🤙

    • @smallkinedings
      @smallkinedings  2 місяці тому

      Surfacing veil doesn’t really offer anything over what the cloth covering the logos on this board offers. It could have been useful for that logo I placed between the fin boxes but that whole area needed to be laminated anyway to cap the fin boxes anyway.
      The issue with peel ply would be that it would cut off the air from my cloth inlay taking away its tackiness meaning I’d have to sand it before laying the glass lamination over it. Sanding cloth inlays or something like flax panels is something you want to avoid as you can ruin your patten with the sanding so better to keep that tackiness and laminate straight over.
      Appreciate the comment and the view, gave me some things to think about 🤙

    What a pro, looks like fun working on these.

      The fun begins once the resins kicked on the inlay and it's cut out. Everything before that is stress, stress, stress haha!

      Cheers man! I actually hate this video 😂 I've kept it there though because one day I'll chop it up and re edit it now that I've got a bit more of a clue as to what I'm doing

    Hi...end result = Beautiful board.
    @47:20 above the leash plug...
    Can you recommend a way of filling in the blank, so that it doesn't have that effect of the blank/foam not having the smoothness finish as glass does?
    I have seen on another channel, he used "spackle". To fill any space created by the blank.
    Hope that makes sense!
    Cheers.

      Ahh yup, I see what you mean.
      So in the case of this board, its a PU blank and those marks you see are from the shaper gouging the foam with the thumb plane as he took the stringer down to foam level. He should have sanded and screened it out before it came to me for glassing.
      In the case of spackle, that is used on EPS foam. EPS is made up of large cells so it can't be sanded as smoothly as PU. This especially shows when resin tinting EPS as the colour sits and pools between the cells giving a splotchy effect. Spackle is a lightweight solution to solve this bit, at the end of the day it's not water proof so once water gets in the can be troubles... though EPS isn't any better if you ask me 😂
      Hope that helps

      @@smallkinedings...Hi and G'day, thanks for replying. I learnt something reading your comment EPS/spackle, relating to how it's only for EPS blanks. Yes mate, I too like PU...
      I went back and watched after your comment, I looked at either side of the stringer around the leash plug, and you're spot on. It's like a trail of "Foam acne" from the thumb plane.
      That "cloth inlay"...was the bomb dude, really opens one up to what's possible.
      I like these kinda vids...never get sick of watching and listening. In the future, I'll be giving it a crack.
      Cheers. Stay upright.🤙

    Great in depth video. I’ve seen fin boxes installed directly on the lam but seems like after hot coat keeps it cleaner. 👍🏻

      Yea I'm sure it's doable. I was so paranoid about that cloth moving haha! It's on my to do list to cut this video up and voice over it, make it little easier to watch

    Can you use any thin cloth to do this?

    • @smallkinedings
      @smallkinedings  11 місяців тому +3

      Heya man! In theory yes but take something extreme like denim, it's going to need an absolute tonne of resin to wet it out and the weight would be insane. That said, people do some really cool stuff (tables, sun glasses etc) with denim and resin. For a surfboard though, ideally you want natural cotton and quite thin, think like a sarong, they are about perfect 👌 also make sure you do a test piece as some cheaper prints will bleed and run when the resin wets the ink out

      @@smallkinedings Thanks for the response, man. Been humbly learning a lot of tricks from you that I never thought of. We been getting a crap ton of damaged paddle boards this summer in Colorado. I have a 11' personal paddle board that I want to test my skills on. Want to sand off the old epoxy and try something like what you did in this video. I also want to try out that PU foam that you showed on damages, I use to always hand pick individual foam beads from old boards and mix those with epoxy, so brutal. The PU foam seems so much better of an idea, I just always been afraid of how well it would adhere to the original foam boards

      Had a play back, I think it's a combination of "lost dog street band" and "poor man's poison". There a little cradle of filth in there too but that wasn't sped up
