I love Luna's replies, but it thrilled me to see there was THIS version. Luna's reply made me tear up a little, but this made me really feel Nightmare Moon, how she felt during her downfall and just before returning to take revenge.
I dont think one is better or worse than the other versions, but I am so glad this version of perspective exists. Very nice work. I loved it.

Yes I agree that both have their merit and regardless what some believe this should be called, I wanted to give a different perspective of a Luna that felt vindicated and rightly so for how she was treated, twisted by the hatred Nightmare Moon embodies. I think this one AND Luna's reply are both very good. I enjoy this one because you can tell Luna is super upset at Tia for doing this, but she still misses her...
I like the idea of her Soliloquy turning into Luna's Reply later on, once she had time to think about what she's done. I mean, it was 1,000 years.

I enjoyed Lullaby for a Princess because it gives us a nice glimpse into how torn Celestia felt about banishing Luna. Luna's Reply was enjoyable because made sense for Luna's actual, uncorrupted self to regret what she had done. This one I like because it gives us how she would respond while corrupted as Nightmare Moon.
Hah! That's more like it! Maybe I'm just a stickler for the original story, but when I heard 'Luna's reply' I thought to myself "Wait that's not right, she spent a millenium in bitterness as Nightmare Moon." I'm so happy that you wrote this version. You made my night. Actually, I was thinking Nightmare Moon's response would be something like a goth metal piece with full orchestration (Nightwish, anyone?), but I guess that's kinda hard to put together XD
i'd like to think she was in a suspended state, because after a 1000 years all alone, don't you think she world go crazy? and she seemed pretty calm and collected at her return.
In which case, Celestia's punishment would just be to delay for 1000 years while she looked for a permenant solution (A.K.A. Twilight Sparkle), maybe?

That's more or less exactly what it was--A response to Lullaby for a Princess, Luna's side of the story as she sits there on the Moon, hearing that "half-hearted apologetic" attempt and tells how this could have happened...Though in the end, she's still the same Luna that wants to be with her sister, just sadly corrupted into focusing only on her pain and not Celestia's. Thank you both so much for amazing analysis
Thank you!! Yes, I really wanted to capture the feelings that Luna/Nightmare moon was feeling as she spent 1000 years on the moon ALONE. At least Celestia had the praise and love of her subjects. Luna was only remembered as a tyrant and "evil" being that had to be "rightly" vanquished. Anyway, glad you like it!

Lullaby for a Princess is been on of my fav pony songs ever made. This companion piece is beautiful and fits so well with the original!
I feel that this would be what Luna would have sang at the beginning of her exile. But after a while it transformed into "Luna's reply" as she was under the influence of Nightmare Moon.

I love how there is like different versions of Luna's POV. Like there's this one where she is still kind of in her Nightmare Moon form and then there is one where she blames herself and is forgiven towards Celestia
I liked this a lot. Tells it from Nightmare Moons eyes and her actions, and how much she still wanted to grip everyone in permanent cold.
He haterd towards Celastia tells how much she really didn't care that he sister had to do that, and that is was mostly her fault and not Luna's at all. But other than that, this made me really think on how Luna really felt durning that time and those 1000 years for being on that moon. And both meeting their fates might mean something bad when she does return and still has that anger and hatred built up still for her sister banishing her. Made me sad that both felt guilty on what they both did to each other.

But seriously, this song is beautiful. I think I actually prefer this to the original "Lullaby for a Princess" and "Luna's Reply" (the version where she regrets her actions), because this one is more in character with Luna as Nightmare Moon.

This version Is more in character and the changes and enhancements to the music by Prism Ripple are in keeping with the best vein of creative collaboration in the fandom whereby covers and revisions are done to greatly improve the original. The changes to the composition demonstrate real creative talent and a lovely sense of toneal melody lacking from other covers of this song.

Kiara Macrae the person who you have been name calling personally just made their own version of the song because the voice is different doesn't mean that it can be Luna! now would you just stop with the name calling at the other person they simply just it may need another version that is most likely when Luna had realized her mistake. ( now I love Luna. Luna is one of my favorite ponys so no on her or you. )
I think this'd be Nightmare Night's point of view, but the other Luna Lullaby, 'Luna's Reply' would be Luna's thoughts herself. In my opinion.

I really like how this works out and fully accept this headcanon~ And yes, I intended for the last part of it to be Luna-or what part of Luna that was left after 1000 years on the moon. Thank you for the description!

this way one has nightmares soliloquy for the early years till the latter half spend in the moon, while slowly regaining her old consciosness as luna but still being nightmare moon.
(i love to think that after her new gained freedom in the season one premiere nightmare moon is but a shell that needs to be broken to let her old self shine again, thus leading to the fast apology to her sister.)
the third part would be lunas reply, after she regained her place besides her beloved sister, who she found to have never given up on luna, and thinking back how she could have done things in a different way.
p.s.: this version is truly a beaty among music and now i have a third song that tells the "story of the beginning". :D

I'm getting chills. This is incredible. I love the lyrics, and while I loved Luna's Reply, yours is more realistic and the lyrics seem more original. I love your voice and feel that it fits Luna far better. A fitting answer to Lullaby for a Princess, and I can feel the emotion in it.
Hmm. It was 3 am and i was staring at the moon when youtube recommended this song to me. (Although i have heard it before) When did youtube learn to read minds?
No clue if you intended this, but I think of the song as an inner conflict between Luna and Nightmare Moon. Lyrics like the chorus make me think of NMM having control but lines like "The years now before us" to "Swiftly pass, I pray" are Luna pushing back. Of course I love internal conflict so I'm probably biased. Great song, though!

The scariest part in this version is what makes this amazing; the little bit at the end where she repeats "sleep" twice, but there's just a short little sound where the original sang the last "sleep". It's like she's already broken away from the moon.
When I originally heard Luna's Reply, I fell in love, so I was skeptical of this version. After listening through half of it, I realized that it was Nightmare Moon's response, not Luna's (I consider them two separate ponies; two personalities per say) so, of course, I fell in love with this version for Nightmare Moon. Definitely putting this in my MLP: FiM playlist. This is great, I will admit. I've thought of trying such things myself, so I might message you about using your lyrics. ^-^

Thank you SO very much! Yes, there seems to be a lot of controversy between this one and Luna's Reply. I find both of them have their merits, and in retrospect I suppose I should have titled this "nightmare moon's" soliloquy instead. But Luna's still in there somewhere, as evidence from the last lines that call back to her true self. I feel like this version makes so much more sense after the Season 4 premier though! I'm grateful for the headcanon fodder.

And I, personally, believe that it would have been best to name it that -- which is what I did when I put it on my IPod -- and I definitely think it's best named that because if you think about it, although the true Luna comes through, she is still Nightmare Moon.
Nightmare Moon was created through Luna's angst and jealousy, so in the sense that she is on the moon for 1000 years, it makes sense that her corruption into Nightmare Moon would be what this song was made for. Corruption of a princes rather than a full Nightmare Moon monologue. lol

Ty Lyrikz You know, I don't mean to seem like an ass, but the word that you used in the last sentence of your second paragraph, "monologue" should be "soliloquy."
A Monologue is when one is singing or talking alone with multiple people on stage. Whereas a soliloquy is when they're on stage alone. So the correct usage of the word is soliloquy.

I have seen this video constantly and ignored it as just a cover to the original. Ignorant was I for sure. I did not realize there was a version per sister. Now I listened to this and placed this song next to the original I have adored for so long, I can see how much deeper and how much more epic the songs are. I want to say I like it, but I have some big problems with it that really started becoming apparent once I thought about them. Celestia's lullaby for a princess is about how her arrogance and neglect cost her dearly and how she regrets it all and longs for when they can be reunited because she still loves and misses her sister. This version, however, is saying "no, you don't understand the magnitude of your mistake, how much you wronged me, how society wronged me; you don't get to herald yourself as the tragic paragon, the price is still yet to be paid". That's a really good concept, but I felt the execution was a little schizophrenic.
How were you trying to address the relationship between Luna and Nightmare Moon? It's really unclear. There was too much of a "vow of doom" vibe to just be Luna speaking, but there was too much of the "this is the job I pride myself in and am justifiably upset that it goes so unappreciated" to be just Nightmare Moon independently of Luna. If you wanted to progress from Luna into Nightmare Moon to reflect how she was growing increasingly resentful over time, I don't feel that was done very well because those vengeance vows came in pretty early the later parts had too much gentleness and an apparent lack of malice- only to go right back into condemning Celestia for her mistake (there was back-and-forth is what I'm saying). The "gentleness" I detected would have been fine if it was that slimy deceptive calm of a villain, but it wasn't; it just sounded devoid of hot-blooded wrath despite her words stating wrathful desires- which is inauthentic to the canon because we've seen that Nightmare Moon is full of wrath and malice. You relied too much on lyrics and not enough on tone and delivery. If she feels angry and cheated, make her sound angry and cheated.
If not completely separate beings, were you trying to say that Nightmare Moon is a part of Luna but not completely indistinct, kind of like a Two-Face and Harvey Dent type deal (multiple personality disorder, except without either being dominant and maybe some deliberate ambiguity as to where one ends and the other begins)? Or were you trying to say that there's no separation between Luna and Nightmare Moon, that they are a single entity and that Luna genuinely thinks and feels all this? If the latter was the angle you were going, were you trying to portray her as tragic yet unsympathetic, like a number of comic book villains? If so, that's a rather unique angle for the Luna/Nightmare Moon relationship, albeit inauthentic to the canon, but I can overlook that and appreciate it for what it is... or rather I would if it wasn't for the poor delivery and tone with an over-reliance on lyrics as I mentioned in the previous paragraph. And in some parts one feels sorry for her anyway, like when she says "I never imagined I'd face [the years before me] on my own".
If that wasn't your intention and you were actually trying to portray her as sympathetic to some degree, you did a poor job of that too. Words like "we'll both meet our fates" and "may guilt plague you for your great crime" can be defended as sympathetic if Nightmare Moon is supposed to be a separate entity unrepresentative of Luna (who's actually the sympathetic one since her mind is being controlled by a corrupted being who isn't like her), but not otherwise (then it just sounds like aggressive spite). If you were in fact trying to have a distinction between Luna and Nightmare Moon as separate entities, I don't feel you invoked enough of a sense of "these aren't her words, Luna doesn't mean that, that's Nightmare Moon talking" that would be needed. And what parts I could try to distinguish as "Luna's" or "Nightmare Moon's" seemed to have a bit too abrupt of shifts at times. If that abruptness was deliberate, you really needed visual aides to help the audience keep it straight. I suppose in some cases, that apparent abruptness might be parts that could be interpreted multiple ways (good or bad), but that's a stretch.
The official animation for Celestia's Lullaby for a Princess had visuals to let the audience know when it was the present and when it was the past (or the present as of when the flashback took place, 1000 years ago). That, and getting confused wasn't really an issue anyway because we know it's always Celestia talking, it's the same Celestia in both periods. But here, there's neither visual aide to help us keep straight past and present (so it's just a bit jarring to hear her use both past tense and present tense) nor visual aide to help us keep straight "this is Luna talking" and "this is Nightmare Moon talking". I'm not saying to have a fully animated sequence of actions and backgrounds like Lullaby for a princess, just some way to help keep straight what's what and who's who. Even if you were just doing the Harvey Dent/Two-Face type relationship I mentioned earlier, having visual aides to subtly shift between the two when their respective voices were heard would have emphasized her not-completely-distinct dual nature and that Nightmare Moon is in fact a part of her. I honestly can't tell how brilliant or not you were trying to be.
+Elfos64 Well first off, thank you for the VERY in depth review of a song that I changed the lyrics for over 3 years ago! And to be honest, as it's been stated time and time again with other individual's responses, the title of this song truly should be "Nightmare Moon's Soliloquy" instead of Luna's. The point I was trying to make was that this was closer to the point in which she would be returning to earth, that she's had almost 1000 years to dwell on what's happened, to reflect on HER version of the story and how her chance at reigning over all of Equestria was stripped from her would-be sister. The information that we now know about them, from the seasons that followed the release of this video and the own fandom's interpretation of it has definitely put the lyrics in this into perspective, but I still believe that these words would ring true.
Though it's not explicitly stated at any point, I am under the impression that Nightmare Moon was not originally a separate entity from Luna, and was more or less a corrupt and twisted Luna (by means of the Tantibus as we now know, or the moon forces, whatever you believe). That being said, there IS a small hint of her at the end, in which she still exists beneath the hundreds of years of hatred and longing she's felt to return to this world. It is only at the end that real Luna/remorseful Luna comes out, otherwise it is purely the darkness forces/Nightmare Moon calling out her sister on what SHE views she's done. Regardless of how truly remorseful Celestia was, or how we have come to see that she was remorseful, Nightmare Moon doesn't want to give her the time of day. She doesn't want forgiveness, she doesn't want an apology, she wants revenge.
The delivery of the performance of the ORIGINAL way that I intended it is actually another video on my channel. In that one, it's not only a lower pitch, but I drag out more of the words and have that darker, more vile tone that you were suggesting. THIS version was merely a re-purposing of the original Lullaby for a Princess and thus I sang it (or at least attempted to) sing it close to the original. Again this was done YEARS ago and I have stated before that I intend to redo it with a much darker vibe, but I have yet to do it.
Once again thank you for your feedback nonetheless and I'm happy that it inspired/enraged you enough to write a review of it(?) Truth be told I just wanted to write Luna's version of a beautiful song that remains to be one of the most amazing songs of the brony fandom. Elfos64 it was actually accurate in my mind, in some of it she is speaking of the past and some of how she feels (sad and mad) and then whatever was left of the real Luna sang that very last part,in my opinion that makes sense, here are points of these ideas
The beginning
"Fate has been cruel and order and kind, how could you have sent me away? As I sit here and gaze into stillness alone, darkness and silence pervade, but here in my prison the thoughts they won't fade of power and glory and praise until your blinded eyes could see your own lies the stars will recount my last days" would be Nightmare Moon along with the parts up to when she seems the most sad and gentle, (no one says anything about that last part) from "the years now before us, fearful and unknown" until the end I think would be Luna, while the rest is Nightmare Moon, part of it she talks about what happened before and then what she plans to do,
When you said "Oh you shadows of night" in the chorus, I thought you said, "Oh shut up O night"

As far as fleshing out the characters go, I would completely agree with you there! There have been so many amazing headcanons and stories made up about the background characters (and lesser paid-attention to characters like Luna) from the brony community.
