- Just as she promised, Luna stood her ground and refused to lower the moon. Faced with the collapse of the delicate order they had worked so hard to build, Celestia was forced to do the unthinkable. Unable to fully utilize of the elements of harmony by herself, she used a fraction of their power to imprison her sister in the moon, saving the world, but at a terrible cost. The harmonic bond between sun and moon was broken forever; now, the elements lie dormant, awaiting new bearers. In time, the darkness in Luna's heart will begin to wane, but with it, so will the sealing spell that holds her in the moon. In a thousand years, she will escape, weakened but still powerful, and the world can only hope that new ponies will be found who can wield the elements and save Luna from herself.
But Celestia's thoughts turn again to the present. It will be centuries before she can see her sister again, and for that, she blames herself. Surely she had seen the signs? She thinks over and over of the things she might have said and done differently. But despite her own sadness, she also longs to reach out and comfort Luna, and in this mix of bitterness, tenderness, and very distant hope, she looks to the moon and begins to sing.

when the fandom gave a deeper character to ponies than the original creators
For example: Luna and Celestia. Hasbro couldn’t go to deep because it was a kids show, but damn the fandom sure went deep.

I remember when I was eleven years old, I was scared and sad one night and I couldn't sleep. My mom must have searched "My Little Pony Lullaby" and found this, putting it on to help soothe me. It was my introduction to it and despite the song's sad message I was overcome with adoration for the beauty of it and I would listen to it over and over and try to learn it. It very well may have been one of the reasons I stuck to choir through middle and high school. I'm 21 now and I still love singing. My girlfriend once referred to my voice as hauntingly beautiful once and I cannot think of a kinder compliment for it because it reminds me of this song. Even as I write this and listen, I am moved to tears. A decade later and you are still touching hearts. Thank you.

Now that I'm older, I think I understand this song now. Luna could have been suffering from depression and Nightmare Moon was her suicidal thoughts. "Nightmare Moon" was taking over which is a representation of her depression. Nightmare Moon is depression, depression may cause you to push others away. The 7 Elements of Harmony is what helped her heal from her depression. Celestia starts to realize what is happening to her sister. That's my theory.
Luna was depressed, yes. But Nightmare Moon formed out of her jealousy.
Yeah, unfortunately the one episode that tried (emphasis on tried) to expound on Luna's depression/self harm really fucked it up. Like really badly. Impressively badly. Basically there's this little blotch of Nightmare Moon that Luna keeps around for the sole purpose of giving herself night terrors to stay on the straight and narrow, but its able to dream hop to so many people that it very nearly enters into the waking world as it's own nightmarish entity. How does Twinight and the gang stop this? They basically say "Hey, Luna! Stop being sad, we forgive you!" And Luna stops being sad so the thing basically disintegrates from even existing. Yes really.
The episode in question is called "Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep" if anyone's interested.

it happened to me, i had left because of the dark part of the fandom, but looked back sweetly at all the good. two years and one game of fallout: equestria later and now i'm back, this time for good :)
I really wish more people appreciated celestia, most people think that she just "banished her sister" but they don't understand how much pain and hurt there was to it, and that she never wanted for it to happen, but that the safety of equestria meant she had no choice. Celestia is so important to the show, and if not for her the elements of harmony never would have united, and would have left equestria in ruins. Celestia is the character that makes the show be a show, but just because of look preference or time preference nobody is able to see that...

When I was little, I used to play this song on loop in order to go to bed at night. So much so my mom bought it for me. I had entirely forgotten about it until she mentioned she went through all the songs she owned, and had found it all over again.
Thank you for this beautiful piece of music. I am in college now, and while that little girl begging to hear this song just one more time feels eons away, I know she smiles when I listen to it now.

Just watching the show doesn’t make you see the pain that Luna went through before she became Nightmare Moon. Since it’s a kids show they really can’t go too deep into it. But with the love and passion from the fans, people have gone all out just to showcase what she actually went through and how hard it really was for Celestia and Luna. This song and the animated music video for it is one of the best examples, it does really well with capturing the true emotions the two sisters had, especially with Luna and her finally submitting herself to her overwhelming jealousy and loneliness to eventually becoming Nightmare Moon as well as Celestia’s overwhelming guilt of exiling her little sister to the moon for 1000 years in hopes to reunite and become close with her again.
ok so i know this song is meant to fit with the backstory of lunas banishment but has anyone noticed this could also hint to su!cide in a non mlp case?
*explanation* - celestia apologizes to her sister who she failed she save from herself and only truly saw her fault until she was gone. she then begins to hope her dreams are now sweet and happy, wishing her eternal happiness in her new bed of moonlight. she tells her to sleep, a reassurance that her poor sisters struggle is finally over with. she feels remorse for being so caught up in herself she never noticed lina who needed her to save her from herself, but eventually it was too late. there was no saving her because she was gone.

It definitely struck me as a pretty clear association with that from the first time I heard it- I related a lot to this song in part because of that, because more than one person in my life was suicidal when I was younger, and I feared every day that one day I would wake up without them and feel like this... If the world wasnt so anti-brony...many songs will be less about pointless junk and more beautiful like this one.
I would like to differ, most of the celebrities or singers or rappers really wouldn't focus on the brony stuff and more on keep them selves feed and their carrier up, more or less they would probably need someone to introduce them to MLP. anyways my argument is that most songs really focus on the real world and not on MLP, so we most likely wont see Eminem rapping about happiness unless it is a strong point in his life.

no, it still doesnt...there are at least 9 million Bronies on the internet (at least, i think there are about 15 milion estimated or so) and this epic song has only little over 1million views...that means there are way to many bronies who havent listened to this song yet, if not via other media (everfree network, etc.).

TheCassiusTain I think that the reason why this video has so few views compared to others is that it's very different than what the rest of the community has experienced. Let's face it, when was the last time you heard a pony song as emotional or beautifully composed as this one? People prefer upbeat and energizing songs instead of sad depressing ones, even though I find this one extremely artistic and could listen to it forever. It's good but it's a metaphorical treasure chest in an ocean of somewhat mediocrity.
Spiderwilliam13 yes, that may be the truth, I can't listen to any every kind of music to any given time. But there are more titles that are well known and listened by many even if they dont fit in the everyday preferences. just take Bohemian Rhapsody as an example.
And I am pretty sure that this song is something liek the Bohemian Rhapsody of brony music. there was a bigger Meetup in hamburg germany this year, the Lunafest, practically a disco with merch and games area...when they played this song, everyone was quiet from one moment to the next...It was such a great experience. Nothing short of a masterpiece can do that.
And still, when i am driving in my car or playing a game i am listening to different kinds of music and I may be bold to say so, but I can imagine the majority of Bronies being similar to me.
So probably the way too few views come from this song being available on other platforms, too. well, maybe I just have a bad/different taste in music as the majority of people.

This is no-shit one of the most emotionally moving songs I have ever heard in five decades of burning oxygen on this benighted planet. It’s a fan song for a cartoon friendship horse and it makes me cry in real life almost every time I hear it.
I play this for my 3 year old grandbaby on repeat if she’s sleeping over. She is a huge MLP FanGirl. My eyes get wet watching her angelic face sleeping while this plays on...... 1000 years of remorse, regret and loss wrapped in a melody so captivating.

When I was younger and still very much into MLP, I used to associate this song with my best friend at the time and myself. She and I were as close as sisters, and we thought of each other as such. I loved her more than life itself.
When I was eleven, my family and I moved across the country, separating my friend and I. Whilst apart, I used to look up at the moon each night and listen to this, thinking of her all the while, especially the "I love you, I miss you, all these miles away" part. I feel that it's even more fitting because she and I had made Celestia and Luna plushies and exchanged them with one another before I'd moved.
Eventually, my family and I moved back home, and my friend and I were happily reunited. After a few years, though, she and I... sort of drifted apart. I still feel that all the middle school drama is mostly to blame, but y'know, part of me has always wished I'd held onto her a little tighter than I had. Tried a little harder. I'd heard she was going through some tough things, although I never witnessed any of it myself, and she wouldn't confide in me. She was definitely one of those special, once-in-a-lifetime friends, though, and I wish I'd continued to treat her as such instead of drive her away.
It's like the line "Luna, you're loved so much more than you know. Forgive me for being so blind." It doesn't matter that I was going through some things of my own. I should have been there for the girl I thought of as my sister.
I hope she's okay, wherever out there she may be.

Bro, it’s been so many years. I was 11 when I first heard this song, and now I’m 19 and I still find myself coming back to it. I still remember all the lyrics as well and still sing it every once in a while, though I replace “pony” with “princess” lol.
8 years ago I suggested a movie. Little did I know Hasbro had an episode revealing that battle between the sisters. Before that, WarpOut did an animation that even today still bring tears to my eyes.

I just wanted to let you know, I have never been a My Little Pony fan. I never watched the show, never got into the series. However, to this day, this song remains in my “favorite songs of all time” playlist, it’s that good. The storytelling, the vocals, the backing track, all of it impeccable. When I babysit my little cousins, this is the lullaby I sing to them, and I plan to do the same when I have kids of my own someday.
