- Survival expert Les Stroud, the host of "Survivorman," rates desert-survival scenes in movies.
Stroud breaks down the accuracy of natural phenomena like sandstorms and flash floods as seen in “Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol” (2011), starring Tom Cruise; and “127 Hours” (2010), starring James Franco. He describes the best ways to avoid desert heat and sun while watching “Holes” (2003), starring Shia LaBeouf; and “Dune” (2021), starring Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya. He speaks on the accuracy of myths surrounding hydration seen in “Better Call Saul” (2015-2022), starring Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks; “3 Godfathers” (1948), starring John Wayne; and “The Way Back” (2010), starring Colin Farrell, Ed Harris, and Saoirse Ronan. He explains the best way to get yourself out of quicksand, as seen in “Hidalgo” (2004), starring Viggo Mortensen. Finally, he discusses the surprising dangers of sand dunes seen in “John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum” (2019), starring Keanu Reeves and Halle Berry.

Survivorman Les Stroud Rates 9 Desert-Survival Scenes In Movies And TV | How Real Is It? | Insider
Started watching Les almost 2 decades ago when Survivorman was first aired. Always appreciated his no nonsense approach at surviving, and not trying to be flashy.
I loved the original Survivorman episodes. No BS. Just a man, a backpack and a camera.
I miss those. Think I may have to look them up again. I always preferred his show over Bear Grylls, even before he was accused of being a fake. His scenarios just seemed more realistic
@@themightymutt5213i mean does it really matter if it was "fake" lots of grylls stuff was still effective and good stuff to learn from. Even if he had a crew and ate real food from time to time. The man still did crazy things and demonstrated lots of concepts and some nutty things.
@@themightymutt5213 Les has a UA-cam channel and he uploaded all the episodes there including the old ones.
@@POLARIS12345he got told to do all those crazy things haha. How does someone deserve to make money on a subject he could care less about?
I love this guy. Bring him back for all types of survival scenes. Les wants you to learn and survive; he’s awesome.
he doesnt have much time looking for bigfoot lately
*WHY do they HATE volume, though??*
This clip has very low volume vs normal UA-cam videos..
Which is terrible for people watching on phones.
It might be fine for SOME people watching on computers with headphones, or people watching on TVs where they have 2 separate volume controls.. but even for some of those people it's terrible as well.
*PLEASE JUST TURN THE VOLUME GAIN UP WHEN EDITING/"POST-PRODUCING" THE VIDEO, PLEASE*
This video has extremely terrible volume gain vs average UA-cam videos.
*The only way that's a benefit to anyone is if the intention of the producers of this video WANT people to FALL ASLEEP OR STAY ASLEEP while this video is running.*
Les is a blessing
@@jonslg240 get an addon to boost it, so many channels don't know how to properly balance their audio you basically have to do it for them. I'd recommend Tweaks For UA-cam and add a +12db button to the videoplayer using it
He has a UA-cam channel you can see every one of his survival episodes everything
I don’t know why but Les is the only guy I ever believe with survival advice. Could listen to him talk all day
So you're saying you've never heeded Bear Grylls' advice?
@@jipke I don’t drink pee pee no
@RedFoxDelta or goat poopoo tea. Bear grills may know survival from his background but his show seriously causes me to gag because it seems over the top and impractical.
@@jipkeHe staged a few things.
@@jipkeOh I've absolutely followed the "sleep in a nice hotel and get breakfast there" advice many times.
More Les Stroud please!
Yes.
+1
His shows are the best! I’ve learned a ton from him, and kept a multitool on my person because of his show!
Yes I really enjoy his UA-cam channel
More les, thats a good pun XD
The Man, the Myth, the Legend. Remember that Les is still very active on UA-cam, everything he has ever done is available here for free, with the addition of directors commentaries and seminars. If you are getting a little nostalgic for some classic Survivorman pop on over and help support an incredible human being.
@anidiotmakesthings He still produces tons of new content, working on Wild Harvest which is currently in production, doing the surviving urban life podcast series, he's currently writing a new musical album. I have no clue what you are talking about, Les is always doing new things and shows no signs of slowing down.
@anidiotmakesthings He cuts up his seminars into short form content because that's what the audience on UA-cam demands, more people watch short form content than long form content in this modern era, if you want more long form content from Les watch the entirety of Surviroman, beyond Survival and other programs he has on his channel. He's quite literally doing what UA-cam viewers want and what he wants on the same channel
@anidiotmakesthings you look like you just want to be right.
@anidiotmakesthings then don't watch. He doesn't owe you anything
The one movie trope that drives me absolutely crazy is when someone throws away their canteen as soon as it’s empty. So what do they plan on doing if they find water later on?
Yeah, that and people fleeing from an attacker, surprising them by getting a good blow in that stuns the attacker then resuming fleeing instead of delivering a coup de grâce... Oh, and every takeaway coffee cup I've ever seen on screen is obviously empty cause they lift it wrong, just wrong...
@briancolwill3071 Well, the coffee cup thing is understandable though, don't want real coffee getting all over the actor's outfits. Usually they fill it with water or something like that
😂 I got lost in north Africa and I was carrying 3 empty plastic water bottles right up till I got to a village.
Every 2 or 3 hours I would go back to them and open them up just in case water magically appeared. I knew it wouldn't but I couldn't stop looking.😂
@matthewmckever2312 haha, I've been there before as well.
@@briancolwill3071So true!!! I'm especially glad you mentioned the first part about getting one good hit in and then not immediately taking another! My least favorite is when they get a hit in and then just stand there waiting for them to get up😂 like don't just stand there!! Keep hurting them!
One of my favorite things on Survivorman was when he showed how he filmed by himself. Like a shot of him dramatically walking away from the camera. You see him leave the shot, which is where the scene would cut for the show. But on his BTS, you see him have to come back and collect the camera. He's not only surviving, he's doing extra work for the show.
We should serious put Les Stroud on a stamp or something here in Canada. He's a national treasure
God I miss Survivorman. It's one of my favorite shows ever. It's also sooo relaxing for my soul to watch...I loved using it as a sleep aid to take a nap or go to sleep. Between the music, natural sounds, and his soothing voice, it's like a tranquilizer for the soul.
Check out Les Stroud youtube channel if you haven't, he goes through all of his episodes and does a commentary it's great.
@@Soupjamjoel Thanks! I WILL.
@@BigBear-- If you click on his name, on his youtube channel, you can find a playlist of all his seasons and other stuff. I'm just trying to help, I don't know how old are you sorry if you know all this.
@@vision821k4 Too old, toooo F'n old (39). But thanks, I'll def check it out. After the show first aired, there was a period of time that unless it were replaying on TV, it was really hard to find.
@@vision821k4 thanks for the heads up!
I grew up watching Les on survivorman, his was always a great comfort show and I never felt like he was trying to get one over on the audience, so happy he posted so many full episodes on UA-cam
This man right here Les Stroud was such a huge part of my childhood. Everything about him is awesome. The beautiful harmonica playing, and realistic survival scenarios. Love you Les!! You're a legend
If could choose one guy to come along with me on a trip out in the wild it would be Les Stroud every time. This guy knows his stuff
It’s amazing. Les stroud started the survival craze. Many followed and he outlived them all. I still watch survivorman on dvd or UA-cam on those cold winter nights.
Les Stroud is such a legend.
I love Les Stroud. Always appreciated how realistic, straightforward, and practical his advice and knowledge is. Bear Grylls was just too flashy and staged.
i love sujeitchacon. she is a beautiful, down to earth and a fun person
When people ask me "Whats the one item you would want if you were stranded on a deserted island?" My response...."Les Stroud." Always.
he's a item 😂
Hollowed out filled with an inflatable raft
16:40 - That's actually a really interesting point about faster-moving creatures likely being more safe to eat in a desert, and slower ones who don't seem to be in a hurry likely being not all that safe to eat. Makes a lot of sense actually.
Forget Bear Grylls who sleeps in hotels! Les Stroud is the real deal, great video.
This dude was the DUDE! I've missed watching him for like 10 years so nice to see him again. Legend of my childhood
Les is a legend. Currently getting caught up on his director commentarys on his UA-cam channel. So cool how he owns the rights to pretty much everything hes made & can post it to youtube with no bs involved
Yes, more Les Stroud! One of the few to do the filming and survival alone, except for b-roll shots, I guess. Unlike some others whom I won't mention by name..
I love les’ youtube channel since he does directors commentary on his survivorman episodes and gives background info/camera info etc. wish there was more but ive rewatched his stuff so much
Love this guy, been watching him since I was a kid. He has always and will always be the true TV survivalist.
One of the greats from Canada no doubt. Hes a legend all around, but a treasure here at home
10:30 The blanket has the wrong side facing out to stay warm. The silver side reflects heat and sunlight, which you want facing your body when you are cold. In the blistering sun, or when having a sunstroke, you want the silver side facing out to reflect the heat. The gold side lets heat and sunlight through.
It was dark and they were inside a cave. Who frickin' cares which side is which?
@@reh3884 It doesn't work if you want to keep warm. The silver side needs to be inwards to keep body warmth in. I literally said that in my comment.
As this entire video is about how real the show is, my comment is on topic.
The real question is: why are you so salty?
My favorite fire trick Les did was when he used some frito corn chips as tinder. The oils burn slow and you can gather twigs and leaves or what not to build your fire. Also the dead lighter, cotton from your sock trick was a good one to lock away
I would love to see a leading pilot or aviation expert talk about the early years of plane disaster movies. Compared to today's movies. I love aviation.
So if there's a aviation expert breaking down plane disaster movies are you going to say.... "i would love to see a survival expert talk about survival situations?" For real though, you might want to check out 74gear where a 747 pilot talks all about aviation
I started learning about aviation because of a emergency landing. Windshield spider webbed. Pilots should have a full shield motorcycle helmet in there just incase it ever happens. Lol
I do like how one engine can keep a plane up by using the other wing flap to balance out the plane. Stuff like that interest me and makes flying over oceans less anxious 😅
I love Les Stroud! Grew up watching Survivorman. Best outdoor survival show ever!
We miss Survivor Man. My family started watching that show just to see what it takes to survive. Then we realized it’s Les Stroud we truly enjoyed watching.
I’m a city boy for life but watching Les has still taught me lots over the years. My favorite is how to safely break a big branch (stick it in the fork of a tree, apply torque to one side)
This is one of the better ones you guys have done. Bring Les back for more!
Les is such a humble man, love him and could listen to him all day!
Woohoo! More Les Stroud! Absolutely love this man from when survivial shows were popular
never knew how Les Stroud still works hard.... on his music, on his stand-up speaking around the globe....Guy is very inspirational once you watch him.
Les is such a legend, I hope hes enjoying life these days
Les Stroud is the best! One man, no crew, filming the reality of survival, not the pageantry of it for TV. Loved his show.
3:48 as soon as I saw a quicksand and a horse, I was reminded of Atreyu 😢
The Neverending story, an amazing movie
Les is the best outdoorsman of our era. I've been a fan of his for what seems like forever. ❤
Nice to see Les doing well!
I love Les. His survivor advice is Awesome!!! Great man on tv
15:55 that was the nicest way to say "you gotta kill it" iv ever heard
Survivorman is my best "documentary" series. I even have its episodes saved somewhere. And I watch them from time to time. It was nice to see him here :)
I lived in Dubai for 15 years as an expat and i can confidently say that there was never any sandstorm similar to the one in Mission Impossible.
Came here just for Les! Survivor Man will always be number 1! Real (possible) scenarios and the correct ways to respond to actually survive.
No throwing yourself off a waterfall tied to “vines” b.s.
Notice how Les rates by going up from 0 rather than down from 10. For instance when he rated Mission Impossible 6/10 it was for the good depiction of the sand. He focuses on the positives, this is a wholesome approach to these ratings. Even if its a small thing. Les Stroud is really cool
Les is a living legend! We want more! ❤
Les Stroud!!! So entertaining to watch. My dad used to love watching him too, RIP dad 2022
I remember watching Les Stroud's original documentary about living in the woods in a log cabin him and his wife built, it was so fascinating and before the trend started on youtube in the past decade. Now everyone does it and wants those views. Les was the OG Survivor Man.
Edit: I love that Les Stroud also calls it a Space Blanket lollll
Great to see Les again, the man looks younger now than he did when I would watch Survivorman as a kid!
Les is THE MAN!!! I have no doubt that he could take down a 'Bear'.
I knew someone who died of complications from Giardiasis contracted in Cambodia. This has made me wary of drinking anything that I don’t know is safe
Always a pleasure to see Les doing his thing.
Les Stroud made this an instant watch!
Les is the man. I like his shows and music and books and gear.
Love the fact your favourite was Better Call Saul.......I mean, it's Better Call Saul! Best thing that's been on TV for years!
I’m surprised they didn’t show scenes from the Peleliu episode on The Pacific. The fact that they were forced to fight in plus 100 degree temperatures and they fact that they ran out of water on like the first day basically. Then the Japanese poison all the wells that were on the island. I think it would’ve been good.
I met Les years ago at my university. He was such a cool guy, chatted with me and my hunter friend after giving a speech.
we love Les Stroud! he is a gem
Loved it, we need more from him :)
I missed Les so much! Thanks!
Les Stroud is the man!
I met Les while taking my puppy to the dog park. He was there with his chocolate lab and we talked for a bit about how I watched him more than Bear. He joked that Bear was a good survivalist and that I should watch MvW because he's more entertaining 😅
After years watching these videos, I subscribe for Les Stroud
Les is the man. OG triple OG
More Les please!!!
It makes me so happy when Canadians are at the top of their field. They get less credit and more crap for no reason. Les deserves all the love and respect.
Love Les and Les’ ongoing issue with Bear lol.
The legendary survivor dude..
The survivor man episode where they ask him to dance with them around the fire is one of my favorite moments on tv.
To be fair to Dune and to Les (who is awesome btw) Dune is a planet with basically *zero* water, so in the deep desert there really isn't any of those animals to worry about in the caves (except for the occasional desert adapted mouse) and the clothing they wear is specifically adapted to collect and process all of their bodily functions and turn it into potable water. So it's really unfair to Les(which he notes!) to sort of grade such a film.
Eh, I think he gets it - I got the feeling that he was really just using it as a jumping off point to talk about the cave survival in general. Even though it's set on a fictional planet, Frank Herbert was very clearly inspired by irl groups like the Bedouin tribes, and because of that Dune kind of becomes a medium of (indirect) learning about how real life desert-dwelling cultures have adapted to the climate. We know that some of it is very close to reality, and I think it's worth pointing out where reality is different, and what the irl situations Dune draws on look like.
He did give it a low score but also said it was hard to give it a rating since it depends so much on fictional tech and climate, so I don't think we need to take it very seriously :P Maybe he could've been more clear in the phrasing, but I really feel like Insider is being very heavy-handed in the editing room to condense these as much as possible, so maybe he DID and it was just left out of the video.
I WOULD have appreciated some commentary on what in Dune is applicable to real life - stuff like sleeping during the day and travelling during the night feels obvious, but you also have stuff like burying your stilltent under sand and trying to reduce water loss from sweating etc. He already talked about why drinking your own piss isn't A Thing, but I feel like the Fremen/stillsuit approach would be to put it and sweaty clothes in your solar still?
@@maybeyourbaby6486stillsuits are literally just astronaut suit just more practical and more comfortable to wear. Also, paul also said something similar to "keeping the water in your body" rather than saving it
Les Stroud is the real deal. More people should learn from what he has to say. In a survival situation, there’s no one I’d trust with my life more than him.
I live in AZ and haboobs are like that. I also grew up in Utah and have also seen the slot canyons fill up so fast with extremely strong running water.
Man people need to get his UA-cam channel to a million already so he does more survivor man episodes. He's getting old. Have to get them out of him now while he can do it still.
Been watching this man for 20 years!
Les Stroud is the easily the most legit and honest survivalists to ever make it to TV. Emphasized the importance of common sense, being slow and steady, and not taking unnecessary risks. Which is exactly how you survive. The directors commentary he's been doing on his youtube channel is awesome and highly recommended for people that watched his show when we were younger.
Hey Insider the grill on the front of a car isn't the engine air intake, that's where cooling air for the radiator goes, air intake is usually in one of the front wheel wells.
What people don't get in the desert is that sand when hot does not interlock its small grains and becomes fluid when it's moved, But at night it is more stable to walk on or drive.
Awesome breakdown of scenes from an expert
Glad to see Les Stroud getting recognition. Bear Grylls kinda took over survival TV, despite having a full camera crew with snacks and first aid. Les handled all his own camera work while also trying to survive some of the harshest environments on Earth, and he definitely didn't have the luxuries that would come with having 6 other people with him.
I used to love watching Survivorman. Seen Les catch himself on fire twice by bringing a fire into his sleeping area, eat dead animals, hide up a tree from a wild pig with a knife in his hand while starving from living off bugs, NEVER catch a fish, list goes on and on. Still love him. Super entertaining in an honest way. And hilarious. Let’s not forget “smoke baths!” 😂
Yes, another Les Stroud video!!
Les is the best survivalist on tv!!? Survivor Man is my favorite survival show ever cuz it's the realest survival show there's ever been!? Just a guy alone with cameras filming himself surviving in the wilderness!!? Can't get much more real deal than that!!? Les Stroud is the man!!! Id take Les' advice over any other survivalist!!?? The man knows how to survive basically anywhere!!!?
He's the boss hoss! I enjoy Les Stroud so much!
Les Stroud the absolute GOAT of survival.
Awesome, I was wondering if Les was ever coming back to Insider.
"what is working right now"- dropping wisdom bombs Les!
Les is the man!
This guy was always better than man versus wild
18:58 is sus. Besides that w vid w dude
In the desert the Marine Corps taught us (when we had sleeping systems) to take our socks off, put them in our boots and wrap the lips around the outside to keep tarantulas and scorpions out. They called it “condoming” our boots.
I'll watch anything with Les, he's undoubtedly the real deal.
Les Stroud is the man. There are few people on earth that have more survival experience.
I am so glad Les brought up the ridiculous fascination with "water safety" in a survival scenario
Please do more with Les!!!
More les Stroud!!
13:19 very interesting point. You can learn so much from him:)
I've been in several large sandstorms in a vehicle, once with visibility at 10-15 feet. You might shorten the life of your air filter, but no, you're not going to "choke" out your engine.
9:27 ''certain survivalists'' lol the beef continuesXD. we all know who hes talking about lmao
I saw 127 Hours in the cinema, I've got Hidalgo on disc. My dad talked about a flash flood while he was in the Aden desert.
Damn that takes me back! Survivorman was awesome!
He is the one survivalist that i listen to.
