I'm glad that it got nominated for best cinematography, the cinematography in this movie was splendidly beautiful. But, this movie did deserve more nominations, such as Robert Pattinson for best actor, and Willem Dafoe for best supporting actor. I saw this only once when it came out in theaters with a fellow cinema nerd. It stuck with me all this time as one of the best movies I’d ever seen. Poetic, psychologically altering, suspenseful. An artful masterpiece. It was like my inner landscape in dream world had come to life in front of me as a film. I’ve always had a strange affinity to the sailor and night oceanic imagery. Past life regressions…
Saw it at Cannes, was personally my favorite film of the festival and the greatest willem dafoe performance of all time... and between this film and good time, Robert Pattinson has more than proved that he has earned the Batman role
@крест Лапотников Its about two lighthouse keepers and their adventures but after a while in isolation they must fight against the loneliness and also overcome their worst fears whilst trying to keep their newfound friendship together.
Definitely, I was already looking forward to it knowing the actors and director involved. Once the trailer came along I couldn't stop watching it and became really anticipative for it's release.
Studios have lost faith in audiences to show up, hence the overselling with trailers. They've shot themselves in the foot though through the over-saturation and abundance of content in the market. A24 is finding success due to their old-school cinematic approach. They have revived niche storytelling in a contemporary time of Disney dominance. Sequels and reboots galore.
This film was incredible. Acting, cinematography, sound design. The slow, claustrophobic build, the unhinged payoff. The allusions to Prometheus and classic literature, just an absolute piece of art.
@Other than Dafoe's stand-out performance, which by the way, grows more and more redundant with every scene, this is one of the worst movies of the year. Pretentious, self-indulgent bullshit masquerading as some sort of pseudo-intellectual "horror art." Bottomline, poor storytelling.
This has been on my list on Netflix for some time and i decided to watch it tonight. The cinematography, the lighting, the atmosphere are just incredible. Truly a movie for people that appreciate something out of the ordinary. Both actors were just brilliant with how they performed. I got so many questions that it might be worth watching again soon.
I haven't stopped thinking about this film for a while... I've watched it twice in the past few years and I'm ready to watch it again. Just gorgeous, raw and uniquely atmospheric...
Who would have thought that Twilight Saga Robert Pattinson would become one of my favorite actors. The guy is super talented and he looks great in this.
Anyone who had seen Cosmopolis, The Rover, High Life, Good Time, Water For Elephants, Maps to the Stars, Damsel, The Lost City of Z, The Childhood of a Leader--he's been doing excellent work in many good films. He always stands out as the best. He did Twilight because he needed the money and thought it was a little vampire indie that no one would see. He had no idea it would turn into the phenomenon that it did and turn into a whole franchise. Even the producers were surprised at the time.
@Xcuze Two men, isolated and suspicious of eachother, descend into madness as the isolation becomes deeper and the fantastical environment shows its colors. That's what I got out of it. That plus the tone of the movie is shown, so I found this trailer to be pretty solid.
@Xcuze I don't know about you but me and a friend both saw The Witch in cinemas when it first came out and we've made a pact to go see this as well. I'm loving the tone, acting and directing style. Not every film is aimed at everyone. This film seems aimed at a particular audience and it's marketing itself to them. If it was a film aimed at that crowd but marketed itself to the lowest common denominator it'd be a flop. A24 put out a lot of artsy and stuff that doesn't always succeed in the box office but I wanna see more stuff that's willing to take risks, and I'm willing to bet most fans of A24's work agree with me there.
Xcuze Stop it you’re being ignorant. Don’t project your own needs onto others. “Meanwhile in the real world...” yea bullshit, just because we’re typing this over the Internet doesn’t mean our opinions and ticket sales aren’t real. I, along with everyone who commented, along with most people I know prefer their trailers to not have the entire movie spelled out in the trailer. Not only that, the trailer DID tell you what the movie was about and set the tone as stated by others, but ofc you wouldn’t address that because you don’t want to admit you didn’t pick it up like they did.
Derrick Vennevold Willem Dafoe is saying “Watchya spill yer beans” not “Why’d ya spill yer beans?” People seem to be certain he’s saying “why’d ya spill yer beans” but that makes no sense to me at all. Even the video subtitles it that way when you turn them on but I’m still skeptical. Hear me out. It wouldn’t make sense in the context of their dialogue. Because what is said is: Willem: “Tell me what’s a timberman want with being a wickie?” Robert: “Just lookin to earn a living, like any man. Startin’ new.” Willem: “On the run.” (Accusatory) Willem: “Keepin secrets are ye?” Robert: “No sir” Here Willem is clearly trying to pry for information. Robert is clearly not budging. Spilling the beans is a phrase for giving up information. So what makes more sense? Would he ask him why he gave information he didn’t give or would he sort of challenge him saying “I’ll get the information out of you yet. Just watch you spill your beans to me.”?
It is said that to keep the heavy lanterns spinning, early lighthouse keepers kept them afloat in liquid mercury. Many scholars determine mercury intoxication was to blame for the ill fated wickies. A common symptom is hallucinations, something we often see in this movie. Sometimes the scariest things in the movie are the unseen things.
NOW THIS IS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT. An original that still believes in the genuine creativity, intelligence and charisma that films used to possess. Such a contrast to all of the remakes/recycled blockbusters being made in this day and age.
@@good-tn9sr He's not doing it for Batman. Go check his filmography. Sure he made these god awful movies, played a sucked up character, but his other movies are brilliant.

White Hawk well it doesn’t help that people are constantly bringing up twilight after the handful of movies that he’s done after and that no one watched.
Actually, it’s an old nickname for a lighthouse keeper (think of the wick in a lamp, and it makes sense). The Anglo-Saxon term ‘wicca’ hadn’t yet been revived by the time this film appears to be set.
The witch is a proper film? What makes it not a proper film? I want an actual reason other than ‘white people’. And I love Japanese horror, audition is one of the best films ever made, but the film making in the witch is outstanding
Aman M S it can be looked at many different ways, just like the entire movie. It could be Wake knowing that to be the turning point in Thomas’s madness, or it also could be Thomas’s already insane subconscious hating him for recognizing reality.
Hank Swift No way, both “the joker” and “the lighthouse” trailers are amazing. Nicely timed music, mysterious, show small peaks of great acting, and leave you wanting more. Just because the joker is based out of superhero comics does not make it part of the generic superhero movies.

Studios have lost faith in audiences to show up, hence the overselling with trailers. They've shot themselves in the foot though through the over-saturation and abundance of content in the market. Not every film is aimed at everyone. This film seems aimed at a particular audience and it's marketing itself to them. If it was a film aimed at that crowd but marketed itself to the lowest common denominator it'd be a flop. It wouldn’t make sense in the context of their dialogue. Because what is said is:

Robert: “Just lookin to earn a living, like any man. Startin’ new.”
Willem: “On the run.” (Accusatory)
Willem: “Keepin secrets are ye?”

let me just add that filmmakers seem to have forgotten for a long while now the true purpose of 2.35:1 as well. It's a mess out there.
No one wants a nearly square aspect ratio. Go wide or go home.
@@foot2 Lol you go home. Give me all the boxy beauty.
Foot it’s not up to you, nether is it up to me! So let you like the widescreen, let them like the box.
Willem Dafoe is the wrong man to spill yer beans around
He was robbed
Don't feed him beans either
One of the most atmospheric films I’ve ever seen.
Why’d you spill your beans is the most haunting moment in cinema history
I didn't understand that scene. Was it really Wake's voice or was it just a hallucination?
Aman M S it can be looked at many different ways, just like the entire movie. It could be Wake knowing that to be the turning point in Thomas’s madness, or it also could be Thomas’s already insane subconscious hating him for recognizing reality.
No, it isn't.
Dark Light ofcourse it isn’t actually. That’s a very broad thing to say lol. I was just making a point as to how amazing this movie is.
Alejo Paredes it can be.
No joke. Ive watched this trailer probably like 50 times now. I haven't seen a better trailer than this
I need a trailer 2
Brady Spencer ur not alone
Brady Spencer Watch both joker trailers man, they’re amazing!
Your mom Is a nice lady when compared to this trailer they might as well be the suicide squad trailers.
Hank Swift No way, both “the joker” and “the lighthouse” trailers are amazing. Nicely timed music, mysterious, show small peaks of great acting, and leave you wanting more. Just because the joker is based out of superhero comics does not make it part of the generic superhero movies.
Feels like something from the Past, a piece of unknown treasure found. Cannot wait!
"The Lighthouse"(2019) is an excellent atmospheric psychological horror movie! The isolation, the loneliness, and finally the paranoia all over the greatness!
Also the Greek mythology and Lovecraftian horror, those elements were pretty great as well.
Psychologist ke paas jaao
Glad to see pattinson finally get the acclaim and recognition he truly deserves!
Yeah am soo happy for him
