if you feel alone at night... just watch a scary movie, suddenly you won't feel alone anymore. :)
Oof but true

Nice scary comment to read at 2:13 am 🤗
Kaylie Griffin haha a good way to get around it 😂
A24 makes real horror. Unsettling, not many jump scares, disturbing themes and imagery. They are creative in their story telling and I know many of us can appreciate that.
Veevo why didn’t A24 do that with The Witch then????
SonnyGTA why are u so pressed lol
dont you mean Robert Eggers........
Finally someone gets it
Robert Eggers*** people need to stop giving a literal distribution company credit for the directors hard work
The ability to make a disturbing film without a single jumpscare is just....wow...
there is one jump scare
Watch hereditary and midsommar!
@@vilmagalantomartinez4988 Yep, the witch, midsommar and hereditary are my three favorite horror movies.
The Lighthouse too.
@@esmith2k2 also "mother!"
this movie made me so fucking uncomfortable, totally my kind of horror. no jumpscare shit but disturbing.
No jumpscare required. This film is disturbing AF.
I just rewatched this last night, and there is a very interesting detail. When the father is inspecting his corn, look and you can clearly see that the corn has ergot fungus. Ergot is a hallucinogen
Hundreds of years ago people who had ergot poising from crops was said to be witches and where killed by the community.watching this movie tonight.0
How can you tell?
Dang
Ergot doesn’t affect corn. Sorry to burst the bubble. It does however affect wheat, rye, and other grasses. Commonly eaten. PhD is in plant pathology. Corn does get other fun fungi though. But we actually eat one of those and it tastes a bit like a weird mushroom.

Ok....this is getting weirder and weirder.
"Jump scares in horror movies is like a comedian physically going out and tickling their audience" ~ Chris Stuckman - This is why movies like this are so amazing compared to many of the other films we get! The atmosphere, mood and cinematography is amazing! You just get such a pure feeling of dread and eerieness with films like these and its just so well done!
Damn what an accurate comment.
no cheap jumpscares? damn, this seems to be worth watching
MarinOS2107 I know right? I was scared there would be jumpscares but damn that girl in the end was enough to spook me out. I dunno if I have the courage to watch this
+
oreen Camacho
MarinOS2107 I've heard there are a couple jump scares in the film but I also hear the film somehow warrants them. The tension builds so much that you're just hoping for a jump scare to end it.
MarinOS2107 ikr?
+Noreen Camacho go on you can do it
Now, _this_ is how you do a horror film!
Mau Jo I would actually argue it is more a psychological film than a horror film. And THAT can be terrifying.
Jeremy Banchiere No, it's a horror film.
In the wise words of _Batman Begins_ Carmane Falcone, "You always fear what you _don't_ understand".
Mau Jo Fear is an unpleasant emotion. Horror is INTENSE fear. You can have a suspenseful film that provokes fear without it being a horror movie. Only time will tell.
Jeremy Banchiere Mothman Prophesies and Silence of the Lambs are psychological thrillers. This is real horror at it's roots.
Am I the only one who loved the 'olde Englishe' used in this film?
Probably. It was muffed and hard to understand at times.
I watched the movie on my computer with earbuds so it was not hard to understand the dialogue, but it was probably a lot more difficult in a movie theater setting to catch everything
It's Early Modern English from the Elizabethan time period, not "Old English".
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Early_Modern_English
"Old English" refers to the Anglo-Saxon language, which would be nearly completely unintelligible to us
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_English

I love this director. ‘The Witch’ and ‘The Lighthouse’ really were fantastic movies. I know his movies aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but I really like what I’m seeing so far.
Just saw the movie, and first off, this is a GREAT horror movie. Very slow-paced, and a lot of people might not like that at all. But this is true horror. The whole vibe of the movie is disturbing and the last 15 min pay up tremendously. Now, for anyone who's seen it, I was wondering if anyone can help me out with the ending.. *Spoilers*
When the daughter was in the shed, was she talking with the goat, who was satan? Because in the corner you could see a manly face behind her vaguely. If anyone can confirm that'd be great!
I got the impression that she really was talking to Satan.
One of the most unique horror films that has come out recently! Finally, a horror movie that is not a lousy remake, sequel, found footage movie, Exorcist ripoff, or a movie filled with lame jump scares. Stanley Kubrick would be proud!
+Harris Highlights i think she was talking to satan, i think she made a deal with him to get what ever she wanted and he turned her into a witch...idk
Can anyone tell me what was going on at the end tho?? I was so confused.
+Laila Flagg after she lost everything she decided to join the witches, she as pushed over the edge. so she made a deal with the devil to gain power etc
Finally, real horror. What fantastic film. Almost no CGI, no jump-scares.
agree, except it's not a horror movie.
+Duff The duff Yes, it is.
***** So The Exorcist, Rosemary's Baby and The Omen are religious dramas as well? lol.
It clearly is a horror movie.
CGI isn't bad
For those of you who want to see a horror movie that scares the shit out of you, this is not the film for you. I saw this movie last night, and it was amazing. The cinematography, acting, dialogue, etc. all on point. (minor spoiler below)
But just a forewarning you don't see the witch (witches, actually) until the last 10 minutes.
The film does a good job at making the viewer feel unsettled but it didn't scare me in the slightest. The movie is incredibly slow for the most part; you'll find yourself wanting something scary to happen and it ultimately doesn't. I was slightly disappointed with this film as I was going into it expecting a horror. It watches more like a drama film.
Don't get me wrong, though. The film is amazing! Some masterful writing and directing.
I think it IS scary, but for different reasons. The best part about this movie was it didn't rely on jump scares, but atmosphere and imagery instead. The scariest part was the family, because we have to witness their turmoil and we as an audience want to get out. It took me a lot of time thinking about it, and now I can say that The VVitch is a very different, unique and original horror film.
what? we see the witch in the first five minutes, ya liar!
Allison Collins Didn't count it because it's so brief.
Connor Morley It was unsettling to me. I wasn't actually scared at any point in the film. I wanted to be, but I wasn't. The imagery and the atmosphere is done AMAZINGLY. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to scare me. I was really hoping to see more of the witch(es); instead, we got an hour of dramatic tension and family turmoil. This film is definitely horror. It's just not the horror that breaks me.
+John Doe speak for yourself. This, Maniac and The Strangers are the only non-found footage films to legit scare me. (Though to be fair, Event Horizon came pretty fucking close)
The last scene when witch eats live goat and then laughs at kids looking towards them was so terrifying
It's called The VVitch, guys. Get it right.

Austen Green Literally a "W" is just two "v's". It should be called a double v. It is spelled correctly, but Im guessing your joking. This was just a nice excuse to complain that A "W" ISNT AN ACTUAL "U".
Of course I'm joking. The text of the movie title in the trailer had the W disconnected in the middle. So it looked like two Vs.

One of the most disturbing films ever made. This is true horror that makes you think even after you watch it.
Didn’t watch it but don’t mind the spoiler, what was disturbing?
@@nyamheria the setting is really dark and creepy
I dont find it to be more disturbing than some of the “tryhard” disturbing movies Such as Serbian Film for example. I like this movie’s atmosphere, it is disturbing but like in a better kind of way? If it makes sense. It is not about necrop*elia or some other sht like that but it is creepy and something new.
What is it about lol. You guys aren't answering the question very well.
What is disturbing about this movie? Is it satanic? Witchcraft? Hallucinogenic? Sexual? Ugly? Weird? Dark? What is actually going on here?????

I've finally seen this and Hereditary, though saw Hereditary first. I'm so glad this film delivered, Hereditary did not.

me!! i hope i like it just as much as i like midsommar!!
The Witch is one of the best and most original horror films of the past 20 years. From the clothing, to the houses, to the Elizabethan English, the 1600's are rendered in beautiful detail here. In contrast to the laughable Jamestown television series (basically a modern soap opera in period costumes), everything about The Witch is authentic, giving one the eerie feeling of "being there" in 17th century New England. The atmosphere is uniformly ominous and foreboding, reflecting the total isolation of the family in the wilderness. The cinematography is excellent (Note the wagon scene when they are forced out of the colony: it is beautifully shot). The acting is excellent by all involved, creating an intimate portrait of the disintegration of a family under extreme duress. The intimacy and emotion of this family's experience is even uncomfortable in some scenes, almost making the viewer feel like a voyeur. The film is somewhat ambiguous. Is the witch to be taken literally, or is she a manifestation of a group psychosis brought about by isolation, Puritan paranoia, or perhaps poisoning from tainted grain? The film maker leaves it to the viewer to decide, which may account for some of the negative reviews. Some viewers need everything spelled out for them. Ignore the negative reviews. If you are a horror fan who appreciates great craftsmanship in film making, see The Witch.
Jesus Christ this movie was terrifying (in a good way).
I would rather see a film that was terrifying in a bad way.
as an adult, why do you find movies scary?
it wasnt at all it was boring
Borussia Dortmund bet you like paranormal activity huh?
Jargas101 found footage is unoriginal bullshit. I prefer watching movies like the conjuring and babadook
can we just TALK about the fact that this was robert eggers' debut film? imagine having a filmography of just this and the lighthouse, both among the best indie films of the twenty-first century. he's got to be one of the greatest talents of this generation and i cannot wait to see the northman.
Thry marketed it as a horror movie. The only way for people to go see it.
But it's not a gory and constant horror film. It's like a drama that is unsettling and disturbing. It's not really about the witch but the family.
I found the end with Satan incredibly suspenseful. That voice.
The design, camera work, cinematography and music are very atmospheric. Like a less campy version of Sleepy Hollow.
Franky Novotny goat was the main actor..i felt ;)
Wow... this is literally the scariest movie I have ever seen. I usually find horrors to be pretty lame and cliche but this is how its fuckin done. Im actually blown away by how good this was.
Same here!! Have seen well over 50 horror movies incl all the ones on the 'scariest movies of all time" and "most disturbing movie of all time"' top lists (incl Flowers of flesh and blood, a serbian film, martyrs, obvs saw and hostel and human centipede) and found this to be one of the most gripping horror films I've ever seen. Fantastic to find a horror film that is both scary and excellent. Love the Shining and the old classics like that but don't find them scary.
Then you don't watch enough scary movies cause this one was lame as hell

I enjoyed watching this movie back Then. Really scary and classic. Terrific. Not like any modern horror with jump scares formula.
Exactly! People have been conditioned to expect plain old shock value from their horror movies. If there's no real attempt at going deeper, however, that type of thing just gets boring.
Goat Simulator 2016.
In this movie goat did not mean greatest of all time. It mean most stupid movie ever
This film is beyond good and terrifying, not to mention we have Dagemar & Lysa arron from GoT and Anya from The Queens Gambit, this movie deserves atleast a 8.0 on Imdb
I was already expecting this film to be frightening but nothing could prepare me for just how bleak , chilling and down right disturbing this film really is . I don't want to spoil anything but this film chilled me to the bone , and I really mean it .
This is one of those movies you know will give you nightmares but you never listen to yourself and see it anyway.
Just watched this on Netflix. I enjoyed it. It was a good horror film that really makes you think about how solitude and religion affect your mental health and mind.
every time i see the title to this movie i read it as "the double V itch" lol
Old comment but I'm curious about the use of double V to represent W. I heard the film director wanted to do that because he noticed it done in old texts of that era. I wonder if they did it from religious superstition, a belief that even writing the word properly might bring evil upon them?
i pronounce it v-vitch every time i see the title
@@paullangton-rogers2390
The letter U is just a curved V. In Latin, V was one of the five vowels; the letter "oo" as it's pronounced. W would be "double oo". That is why W looks like VV, not UU. VV was used first, and eventually just became its own letter.
One of the greatest movies I've ever watched, truly. Strongly recommend, each second feels as if you're there, you can feel everything, incredible story! The lines, the acting is superb!
It's always the A24 movies that "scars" me
I grew up in New England.
This is pretty much how things go down.
This movie was amazing.
Not cheesy or corny, you can actually see this took time and effort to make. One of the most disturbing and mind playing movies I seen in a loong time, also with some shots reminds me of Hereditery or even Midsommar.
thats the real horror art. Now imagine seeing this at a younger age. This would leave you traumatized without a jumpscare etc. Just cus casual horror is guts, blood, gore, and jumpsacers doesn't make this bad, opposite it makes this perfect horror. Creepy, cold, played with my imagination all the time. Because it was a worldwide folk theme it was familliar and reminded the stories from childhood too.
Whats missing in most if not all current horror - everything is in your face as much as possible as often as possible. Theres no place for subtlety which is a shame, because ones mind is more powerful than any gore, cgi, soundtrack, or jumpscares. But the art here is to somehow integrate imagination while watching movie. When you have time to start wondering whats happening then you're for a hell of a ride. Not many directors understand that, but mostly not much of public want that also. They just want movies to entertain them, even horror.
For me the whole movie was so satisfyingly intense and I didn't even noticed how quickly it ended. It was a pleasure and I will be looking forward to more robbert eggers movies in the future for sure.
Looks great. Definitely going to have to watch this.
Watching this film is like being transported back to early Colonial New England and witnessing the beginnings of the hysteria among the Puritans that led to the Salem Witch Trials. It's definitely the best movie about this phenomenon ever made.
Sure, except take out all the supernatural stuff and leave only religious paranoia and superstition.

plumlogan No looking into the mirror and something creepy is in the background?
Doc Von Doom : We all tried that in grade school-- at school with the bathroom lights out and also at home in my sisters (and my) room. Lights turned out ,twirling 13 times saying "Bloody Mary" and stopping to look in the direction of the mirror. Never saw anything. Did this off and on for about 3 months.
Achenar Moiety no i mean in movies where there is a cliche moment where the main character looks in the mirror, opens it up to get something from the cabinet behind and then when they look back into the mirror someone's there behind them. Then when they turn around there's nobody there.
I see what you mean.
Yep, that idea's been done to death. Hopefully this movie will have a few surprises up it's sleeve !
Also, back in the days of early America -- the Puritans could be pretty brutal themselves, towards anyone even suspected of being involved in witchcraft.
Achenar Moiety oh yeah! since medieval times even. Coupled with a set of "trials" that involve being lighter than a duck (scales were rigged) and pretty much any woman that was hated by anybody would get accused and get torched. Anyway, if channeling a demon by chanting bloody mary to a mirror were actually true then i'm pretty sure a military organisation somewhere would have weaponised it by now.
One of the best films I've ever seen. So original, and Anya's debut was astonishing.

This movie was so good it was amazing
good to hear, child actors in horror/thriller can make or break them
Yeah those twins were really good... I find their characters really annoying but that was their job.
lol!!!!
Who’s here after watching the incredible trailer for The Lighthouse??
Meeeeeeee
Me of course
Me
hello there 👋
Me haha. Now I have to see The Witch to see what this director is all about!
You know it would be a weird horror movie when you see A24...
I wonder why this movie on rt got bad ratings for the audience
Jaime because it’s a baffling piece of shit movie
Lorenzo Smit it’s a shit movie.
alicia terisno right? A23 or A25 you would not expect it. But A24??? Come ON! Am I right?
@@SonnyGTA why do you think so?
You know it was a good movie when you're watching the trailer years later. This is what horror should be imo
I thought the same thing. I also don't mind the dialogue, It gives a sense of authenticity to the movie.
+1
The Witch has such an authentic and unique style and atmosphere to it! I haven't found a film quite like it yet, and this trailer alone is so good! I can't wait for Robert's version of Nosferatu!
Finnaly something great not those found footage movies.
Senior Adrian Goodnight Mommy is also a promising German horror movie. It looks like its going to be good as well.
Senior Adrian Right? They are completely overdone now, mainly because of the poor directing and writing.
Senior Adrian You're acting like there are tons of found footage movies released. Of the hundreds of movies released this year, there has/have been one, arguably two, (The Gallows and maybe Unfriended, depending on how loosely you want to use the descriptor) that have made their way to theaters.
Matthew Norman 2 is to many.
+Matthew Norman Yeah but in recent times the "found footage" genre has been thrashed like an old crack whore!
I've been waiting for this film since January when I read some amazing reviews from Sundance, I'm so happy so see films like this, like the Babadook, It Follows and Goodnight Mommy, genre films with atmosphere, great stories and fascinating characters, something that big Hollywood forgot to put on their genre films (I'm looking at you Blumhouse). I'm gonna watch the shit out of this movie.
The Wilfred How dare you speak about Blumhouse that way.
The Wilfred I was expecting the Babadook to be good, but when I finally saw it, the monster looked like something out of The Might Boosh TV show. We all cracked up lol, so bad.
+The Wilfred The Babadook was a horrible movie!
Frank P A bummer that you didn't liked it man, but is a great movie (98% in RT and 84% in Metacritic).
The Wilfred The Babadook is the best horror movie about mental illness since Repulsion.
This movie is what i like to call "a slow burn" absolutely terrifying. And uncomfortable to watch. It's not for everyone.
the blackcoats daughter is a slow burn too it’s on netflix i love it
it´s literally not terrifying at all
@@annischickle6059 maybe because you watch crappy movies with jump scares and expected this to be like them
A brilliant film telling the story of how Katy Perry signed with Capitol Records
Bwhahaha
@@organenthusiast5803 HAHAHA indeed she ate afterwards lmao

Nah. I'm seeing something scarier...2016: The Election, rated R for ages 18+.
Fucking ok we do not need your fucking comment here i think i dosen't look scary but at least it looks good
I agree
+Sandpaper Snail The Purge: Election Year can't even beat it.
+Brisa Pacheco I just watched the movie; The Witch is definitely a psychological horror, which is quite refreshing to be honest. If you are looking for cheap jump scares, this movie will let you down, but if you are looking for a film that has some meat to it and are of an open mind, you will likely enjoy it.
i actually looked that up and was confused when i couldnt find the trailer xD
This movie was a masterpiece, from its rich historical accuracy, its old English dialogue , to what the director shows you or allows to be seen and what’s left up to the imagination… this film impacted me when it came out , it’s hopeful that Hollywood still has a few real artists working in the industry
IS a masterpiece, not WAS a masterpiece.
It's actually early modern English not old. Old English is hardly intelligible to us English speakers today
I can never play peekaboo with baby sis ever again.
+Nurin Izzati Haha!
Same
Or drink milk from a goat!
+David Poland your right it's very clever
I'm sure someone on here will volunteer to play with her :(
The Village 2.0, directed by someone talented.
M. Night Shyamalandingdong is a talented person.
BrazucaTrailers people who post this have like zero fantasy. rlly comparing this movie to the village only cuz the setting matches? how far can you think? i bet from steak to tits...
***** Personally, I think his Unbreakable is one of the best superhero movies of all time.
BrazucaTrailers Uh are you implying that M. Night isnt talented?
BrazucaTrailers this doesn't look anything like the village
