- Pay-per-view action also saw thrilling back and forth action between Gary Antuanne Russell (17-1, 17 KOs) and Alberto Puello (23-0, 10 KOs), which ended with Puello winning a 12-round split decision to capture the vacant Interim WBC Super Lightweight Championship.
“I got down on my knees and the first thing I did was thank God, and then I said, ‘I made it.' The weight barrier, the time away from my family, it was all worth it,” said a jubilant Puello.
“It feels great to be a champion, because this will mark the beginning of a new chapter in my life.”
The two southpaws gave as good as they got for the entire fight with both fighters refusing to give an inch. Russell’s quickness and aggression allowed him to pile up points, but Puello’s counterpunching proved to be the difference
"It wasn't about what Puello did tonight, it was about what I didn't do. I should have listened more and executed more. Like I always say, if I execute our game plan, it's a matter of fact that I'll get the victory. But tonight, I fell short,” said Russell.
Puello was deducted a point for holding in round nine and was on the receiving end of a borderline low blow in the 10th. He appeared to return the favor a round later as Russell needed a momentary break from a low shot. In the end, Judge Dave Hudson’s 118-109 score for Russell was overruled by Tim Cheatham and Glenn Feldman who had it for Puello by scores of 114-113 and 115-112 respectively.
“It was the best I have ever fought in my life,” said Puello. “The hard work being far away from my family finally paid off. Bring anybody on, I don’t care. I’m ready to face all comers.”

Puello, defense and counters were the winners here. Not many would have got out of the pressure Russell provided. ❤
I agree to the extent of the lower level. At this next step these guys are not going to be as phased by the pressure. GRJ needs another gear other than straight forward run in and get countered. I think he learns from this and gets better. I had him loosing wide. Puello just landed better, controlled him from the back foot and had better defense and overall better movement. He was out classed on this one. I like GRJ I think he has some tools he can sharpen and I think he can improve and adapt to a more thinking style. Puello a problem at 140. Your thoughts?

Dude was good with it I wish it was a draw it was that good and he stood his ground when he needed to and plus that’s Puello strong suit is counter puncher he fought like a true southpaw had a jab was throwing check right hoook from the southpaw stance had a nice one two had a nice right hook straight laugh and I’m impressed by his gas tank too not making excuses but I hope they got tested due to dude history by popping hot before if they didn’t that would be Russell fault other than that that was a good fight an I’ll watch it again if they have a rematch

Puello’s endurance was one of the most impressive things. He took some clean shots i thought would hurt him.

Why is no one talking about the first Judge's scorecard? what fight was that guy watching? It was very close, but to say Russell won 5 rounds is crazy. Russell took more damage and it showed on his face. Puello landed more significant strikes and had more ring control.
The only thing is that Matias went down without a fight.

I had Puello wining by wide margin. Beautiful counters good defense setting traps allowing GRJ to walk right into them using his non stop non thinking agression against him. He walked into the same counter more times than should have been possible. I kept on thinking when does he adjust. If Puello had power could have been bad for GRJ. Puello a difficult out for anyone. I think GRJ learns and comes back better. Against this level hes goingbto need a plan B.
