Thank you Andrew! This wood is very common among turners, yet this was the first time I turned some. I should have turned it wet and not wait for it dry out, only later, someone told it's better turned fresh... Yuval.
Once again you have transported me through time with your beautiful work. I have not been watching your work for some time, due to medical issues, but now I am back and plain to keep my eye on you.
That is some really beautiful wood and of course the vase is beautiful as well. I've been watching several videos from several turners and people like yourself motivate me to up my standards and attention to detail. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Thank you Paul!! I love how this wood looks, yet I hated the way it cuts... the knots seem to be the only proper hard wood in this whole piece!! :) Yuval.
Hi Yuval that is a very nice piece of wood looks very easy to work with love the shape of your hollow form and nice video thanks for sharing keep up the good work and safe turning Ian
Yes we do work with what we have just wish I could get out in my shop I hope to get out soon just hope my opp has worked for me and there will be no stopping me 😀
I have loved working with Norfolk Pine ever since I first found it back in 2012. Looked like you were struggling with the hollowing tool. Practice makes perfect!
I really like the grain of this wood. The form and proportions of the vase are wonderful and show off the wood to a great advantage. I like the direction you are taking with your video production as well. Thanks for your review of the Sorby hollowing tool. Take good care, Gord
Hi Yuval! Beautiful vase my friend, I love the shape you gave it and the wood is certainly amazing! Great video and I am glad that you finally were able to find a replacement capacitor! Is good to see you back in the shop! Cheers! Daniel
I can imagine the suspense before you turned on the switch, I am really glad it did, a lot of people, myself included, would miss you and your teachings a lot if you had to stop posting videos for a while. Cheers and once again, very happy things turned (forgive me the pun) well! Daniel
Beautiful example of your skills once again Yuval. Great taste in music as always & a very honest 'review' of the Ultima hollowing tool. Glad to hear you are all out of harms way. Stay safe & regards, Geof (UK)
Thank you Carlo! Also for reminding me about the ordeal. I've added a couple of notations to the video to highlight the places where the lathe gave me problems and in the end died on me. Yuval.
I just saw this video on Facebook and followed the link to your UA-cam page. Having seen many videos of other wood turners, I commend you for doing something no one else has, show me the tools you use to create your pieces. Thank you from a new subscriber.
Thank you Jon! I just think all aspects of a project are important. I can't put everything in every single video, but I try to mix all parts on most of them. Yuval
By adding weight to the handle I think you will find it easier to use. I also use an overhand hold on the handle, thus the handle rides under my holding arm. This buffers the cutting vibrations. I have the complete set from Sorby and the best part was the side handle and the handle extension.
Thank you Robert! I did think to add weight to it, and I've seen the overhand hold with propping the tool under arm, I will try it with my next attempt on a larger project so the space won't be as tight. Yuval.
I did enjoy it, thanks Yuval! Liking the on-screen notes to point out what tool you're using, some interesting camera shots too (especially the shot where the camera is over the headstock just above the chuck.. Nice wood, nice vase and nicely put together. Grand job.
Thank you Brendan!! A friend who will remain unnamed has challenged me to dye it candy red and finish it with high gloss lacquer. I didn't take up his challenge, of course... Yuval.
Thank you Tom! Take note of the suggestion people had on woodchuckers, turn it wet, not dry like it did, I guess it turns completely differently, turning dry was a somewhat dusty experience... Yuval.
Never seen wood like that before, it really is amazing. Great review on the hollowing tool, out of my price range for now as I'm still getting a lot of the basics.
Thank you Paul! I know what you mean, this tool was also out of price range, which is why my wife's father bought it for me on my last birthday, or else I wouldn't have had it :) Yuval.
Thank you Yuval for another very interesting video with a beautiful vase as the end product. I already have the Sovereign Ultima hollowing tool and it does require some practice and a great deal of carefulness to use it to best effect. I'm also very interested in the wood that you used. It seems to be commonly known as Monkey Puzzle. Oddly, it's quite common where I live in Ireland. The reason is that when avenues or streets of houses were being built around the year 1900 it was quite fashionable to have a Monkey Puzzle tree planted in the small front garden. These have since vastly outgrown the houses and every so often one is cut down and the logs advertised for sale in the local newspaper. I think the tree is native to Chile. I've watched several uploads when Norfolk Island pine has been used and didn't make the connection.
Well there you have it Alan, the connection is made :) I'm glad I could help with my video! This tree is a very common garden tree in Israel (where I got the wood from) and Italy (where I never found any in 5 years of turning). I should have turned it when it was fresh instead of waiting for it to dry, it was a very dusty turning, not many shavings were produced. Next piece I'll have I'll turn as fresh as I can. Yuval.
Really nice, Yuval - love the way you flared then rolled the top. I'm so over hand-held hollowing tools. Anything bigger than a 100 mm lidded box and the Trent Bosch system comes out. But, then again, I'm older than dirt :-) Clyde
Thank you Clyde! I dream of a fixed system for hollowing, but the truth is, I don't get to hollow all that much, so I can do without, maybe someday when I have some more time during the week to turn, I'll might go for the whole shebang :) Yuval.
Beautiful video, Yuval. The vase looks great. You have to use the tools well explained (by the insertion, have used that tool you). The wood has a very, very beautiful grain.
Thank you Tom! I've thought about the different types of aids, like a second tool rest, or a locking tool rest, maybe combined with some hollowing system, but I do not have the materials right now to fabricate something, and can't afford to get the brand name stuff, so it's going to be a battle for now :) Yuval.
Lovely vase Yuval and thanks for the honest review on the Sorby Ultima. It's not on my list at the moment as I doubt I would have the room to use it currently :) The Monkey Puzzle wood looks very interesting to turn and has a similarity to Yew in figure. I especially like the scalloped rim. Great project!
Thank you Ian! Wish I had some more of it, but alas, I had only the one piece. Good thing I didn't hollow through it, it doesn't show on the video, but there is a point on the curve near the bottom where I got really close to breaking through. The fault lies with me not having a large enough caliper to measure to these depths, something I will fix very soon. Yuval.
Thank you Jack! I use boiled linseed oil and not danish oil since I can't find any danish oil in Italy, and the kind I can find is being sold here for twice the price it has in other countries, so yeah, simply too broke for the good stuff :) Yuval.
Thanks for the video. I always enjoy your videos and your music choice. Is it a hole in the bottom of the vase on 6:47? Do I understand it correctly that there is no chance to use a wooden vase with water? Sorry for a possibly stupid question.
Thank you Dmitry! Good eye!! It is a hole in the bottom, but it wasn't made by cutting deep enough, it's the pith of the wood that rotted out since I left the trunk to dry out. my mistake. By I was able to fill it in with a simple 4 mm dowl, and sand it flush at the bottom. You can use water in a wood vase if you treat it; you can create a waterproof vase using a layer of epoxy, or resin, or even with a few layers of specialized woodworking oils which polymerize. Yuval.
Nice vase! I'm still waiting on a load of Monkey Puzzle myself, never turned it but I'm promised a complete tree :-) Interesting to see and hear how that hollower feels and works, I'm still in search of a good hollower that can go deeper into the object sideways, still didn't find anything to my satisfaction.
Thanks buddy!! Trust me when I tell you you should turn it wet and fresh, since when it's dry it's hell to turn. That hollower was a small nightmare, it need room, which I didn't have on this piece, but will have on the next one I'll use it for, I hope :) Hope your search goes well, as I know you, you could probably fabricate one pretty quick. How's the hand doing? Yuval.
Thank you Roger! I brought this piece with my from my last visit to Israel, it's quite common there, and also here in central Italy, only here if a tree falls, they chop it right away for firewood, while in Israel when you don't have a fireplace in every house, they usually just throw it away, unless someone knows a wood turning, in which case, some pieces are saved, and even travel to different countries :) Yuval.
Thank you Bernie! Well, this piece came from of Israel, a friend of mine gave it to me last time we visited and I packed it well and brought it here in my suitcase, went without a hitch. Norfolk Island Pine is very common both in Israel and in Italy as a garden tree, many have there, were here in Italy, if one keels over, they chop it right up and use it as firewood, where in Israel, they don't have many fire places, so it is usually just processed by the local gardener, and some of those know some turners, and so the comunity is supplied :) Yuval.
That's really interesting as its an Australian Native. I have seen lots of Australian Eucalyptus trees in Greece but that more obviuos wiht the large greek community here.
Thank you buddy, we slept through it, but friends of ours were woken up to a moving apartment. We live on ground level, and they live on the top of a 7 floor building, so that might have helped them to feel it better. Our dog which barks at ants and lightnings, didn't wake up... Yuval.
To me...(I've watched several reviews of this tool)..it looks like at the head of that tool there is too much going on with all the stuff (I can't think of what to call the stuff). I know that is clear as mud. It just looks like you have to very careful when entering a hollow form that has a small opening. It also looks like it could catch you off guard in a split second. Just my personal observations....the vase is beautiful!!
Thank you Monte! Yeah, the head of the tool sure looks like a full time job, but in fact, once you set it, you don't play around with it all that much, just small changes in direction. And sure you would need to be extra careful when entering a vessel, but that is true for every hollowing.. This one is not a tool from small turnings, in fact this vase should probably be as small as you would ever want to go with it. Yuval.
can't wait to see that after you put it in conditioned space...I spent the first years watching what I made crack and warp before finding DNA.......waste of time if you have an air conditioner or anything that controls humidity
You can make beautiful things with that wood but I would like to see a ban on using it as is species at risk of extinction. Originally from Chile and most the been used around the world is imported from there. The problem is that the Chilean government is not worried about it and let the wood be exterminated.
Thank you Mario. I don't know why you think this wood is almost extinct, in Israel (where I'm from) and Italy (where I live) they are as common as weeds, almost every garden has them. Yuval
You have great skill !!! Beautiful work.... but serious man your choice of music does not fit the narrative. I bet you would have plenty of more subscribers if it wasn’t for the music.
Thanks Johnny! You know music is a thing of taste, and no one, not a single soul, can find something that will appeal to everyone. So I go with music I enjoy hoping people won't judge a process video by the background music. Yuval
A really nice project, the wood is fantastic and I have never seen the wood turned only the tree in the wild.
Thank you Andrew! This wood is very common among turners, yet this was the first time I turned some. I should have turned it wet and not wait for it dry out, only later, someone told it's better turned fresh...
Yuval.
Beautiful vase Yuval! I love the beautiful designs that N I P has hidden inside. Thanks for sharing!
Take care, Dave
Thanks Dave! That is one special wood, I only wish I had more of it.
Yuval
That wood is insane and the vase is just right for it! Stunning!!!
Does this video mean, you got the lathe repaired?
Thanks man, and yeah, I did fix it in the end, found the part, replaced, and I was back in business. Damage, 3 Euro. I'll survive :)
Yuval.
Yuval you did it again what an awesome bowl. The wood is awesome and breathtakingly stunning. Wow.
Thanks Kobie! I can't believe there are videos of mine you still didn't see :)

Beautiful piece Yuval . I especially like the way you incorporated the knots in it . I'm glad to hear you're o.k . Take care my friend .
Thank you Glen! We slept through the whole ordeal. Thank you again my friend.

A very beautiful vase and form and texture. Like!
Thank you Aleksey!! :)

Nice work. I like that Norfolk Pine look.
Thank you Mark! I wish I had more of it, there's so much one can do with one of these...
Yuval
That is some really beautiful wood and of course the vase is beautiful as well. I've been watching several videos from several turners and people like yourself motivate me to up my standards and attention to detail. Thanks for sharing this with us.

♡the colors n shape. Beautiful work! You are very talented I always look forward to your videos!
Thank you Lori!! :) Been so busy lately with work and the kids, didn't have much time to turn :( :)

very nice video and a beautiful vase. thank you for the honest opinion of the hollowing tool.

I have loved working with Norfolk Pine ever since I first found it back in 2012. Looked like you were struggling with the hollowing tool. Practice makes perfect!
Yeah, I still have a lot to learn about deep hollowing. I wish I had a local club to go and learn from others face to face, but alas I don't.
Yuval
wow my friend Gorgeous Vase 😍

Thank you Eme!! :)

nice little video and a good honest opinion on the tool, carry on the great work Yuval

Yeah, it sure came out interesting :) I might need to find me some more!

Your quite welcome Yuval. Nice looking turning as usual...!
Thanks again Jack :)
Yuval.
Hi Yuval! Beautiful vase my friend, I love the shape you gave it and the wood is certainly amazing! Great video and I am glad that you finally were able to find a replacement capacitor! Is good to see you back in the shop! Cheers! Daniel
Thank you Daniel! That capacitor was a heart attack, when I replaced it I didn't know if the motor would start.. so glad that it did!!

Stay safe & regards,

Thanks Geof!! This was less of a review as a tool testing, maybe I'll do a better review once I'll have some experience under my belt :)
Yuval.
Beautiful job.
Thank you dale!
Yuval.
And no mention of the lathe breaking in the middle of the project ;).Glad you got it working again!
Thank you Carlo! Also for reminding me about the ordeal. I've added a couple of notations to the video to highlight the places where the lathe gave me problems and in the end died on me.
Yuval.
Never knew that would looked so good n great video n the presentation was great
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! :)

I just found your channel, bravo for the work.!

Excellent... Very nice piece...!
Cheers...
Thank you Adam!!

By adding weight to the handle I think you will find it easier to use. I also use an overhand hold on the handle, thus the handle rides under my holding arm. This buffers the cutting vibrations. I have the complete set from Sorby and the best part was the side handle and the handle extension.
Thank you Robert! I did think to add weight to it, and I've seen the overhand hold with propping the tool under arm, I will try it with my next attempt on a larger project so the space won't be as tight.

beautiful work great turning thanks for sharing ☺
Thank you Daniel!! :)

Amazing work, as always! Greetings from Poland
Thank you Exus!!

I did enjoy it, thanks Yuval! Liking the on-screen notes to point out what tool you're using, some interesting camera shots too (especially the shot where the camera is over the headstock just above the chuck.. Nice wood, nice vase and nicely put together. Grand job.
Thank you Dave!! I'm experimenting with some different angles, to keep the visuals up to par ;)
Yuval.
That piece is really lovely and the oil finish displays the grain beautiflly.
Best Wishes, Brendan.
Thank you Brendan!! A friend who will remain unnamed has challenged me to dye it candy red and finish it with high gloss lacquer. I didn't take up his challenge, of course...
Yuval.
Very nice looking vase that tool looks great.
Thank you Al!! Coming from the vase master, that is something! ;)
Yuval.
It really is stunning wood Yuval. I hope one day to try some!
Tom
Thank you Tom! Take note of the suggestion people had on woodchuckers, turn it wet, not dry like it did, I guess it turns completely differently, turning dry was a somewhat dusty experience...
Yuval.
I'm sure turning most woods wet is preferable Yuval, but for many of us not always possible!
Where there's a will, there's a way, someone used to tell me when I was young, sure stuck in, not so the person who used to tell me that...
Yuval.
Fantastic vase. That tool is crazy.
Thank you buddy!! You should try out, it's a little beast, my next drum will be much simpler to turn! :)
Yuval.
Dude I love your music!!!!! Great turning and beautiful wood.
Take care my friend
Mark
Thanks Mark! The music isn't mine, it's everyone's!! :)

love the look of this piece, think I'll have to find some for Tom so we can use something similar for display when the building work is finished.
You do that Ruth, and Tom will be a happy man :)

The wood has a very, very beautiful grain.
Thank you Gunter!! This tool sure was a challenge, the next time I'll use it it will have to be on something much larger!

I'm lucky to be living in a temperate zone, we do get extremes, but not very common, so most of what I make survive :)

המבטא שלך מסגיר
חשבתי שהשם יהיה טיפה יותר מסגיר מהמבטא...
