    It's not "Good In The Woods" , when it becomes a sufferfest! Excellent decision! You want to remember the good times, that's why we all love to go back and do it again. Worst decision is to try and power through ,then never try it again because of the bad experience!

    I went out for my first hike and cold camp, probably the day before you did this trip. It was 25F and I got to my spot soaked from sweat and late. The temp dropped drastically, my camera died and all filming went out the window and survival mode kicked. It was a rough night but I made it. A hot Nalgene bottle was a real life saver. When equipment fails, bail out. He would have been miserable. If it’s not fun, it ain’t worth it. Good video

    • @ItsGoodintheWoods
      @ItsGoodintheWoods  2 роки тому +1

      That nalgene bottle trick has gotten me through many cold nights. When I first really started getting into winter camping, I was using a cheap Field and Stream 20ºF sleeping bag. ( I still have it) I used it many times in well below zero weather in the mountains. The Nalgene bottle made it possible. I would use 2 of them, every time. I don't do it much anymore because my system is much improved. But on those real cold nights, I'll still do it just to make sure I don't get cold. Or if I have a hat, gloves, socks, a sweaty shirt that needs to be dried..(LOL)..I put them in my sleeping bag with the nalgene bottle. Works wonders.

    Too many people don't know when to call a halt to their trip. For whatever the reason, they don't want to be called "quitters" but honestly, one of the most under recognized leadership traits is knowing when you need to adjust your plans and go with something different. You're an excellent situation of what to do in a situation like this. This is what allows you to continue enjoying the outdoors while staying safe. Great job! It was good to see how you were making sure Joe was ok and decided to call it quits. I think others need to watch this video as your message of calling quits is ok to do. The tent....hahahahahaha! I watched that snow slide off the tent and make that shape. I wish so badly the camera was on. I missed it by seconds. That would have been an awesome once in a lifetime shot.
      I put this video out there the way I did because I believe it to be an extremely overlooked topic. An important one. Not many youtubers are wiling to show trip failure. And that is fact. With all the tubers out there, all the glorious wonderfully filmed peaches and cream camping trips out there, there is a very disproportionate amount of camping gone wrong videos to compliment them. And we all know it happens. Just not on video.... wink wink. How odd. This channel is almost 3 years old, this is the 4th trip I have filmed that did not go according to plan. Good job looking out for your friend. Very smart of you. Now, not hooking up a stove when you have one at disposal and realizing you are camping in mountains in midwinter and knew what weather was forecast- not so much.... You are a camping, hot tent professional and instructor m, you know better. But thank you for honesty and reasons given. I know you would have been devastated if so.ething grave had happened to your friend, even though it was HIS equipment that failed. Again, let's be reminded of those idiots who have all of the channels out there on how "not" to survive that kind of weather. They would not have done what you did and tried to tough it out and then paid dearly for it. I have a ton of respect for you and your judgment.

    • @ItsGoodintheWoods
      @ItsGoodintheWoods  2 роки тому

      Thank you David. Joe and I have endured worse conditions with less gear, no stove, at higher elevation. I stand by my decision of not setting it up, and the reasoning behind it is sound.....however, had I known about his situation I would have gladly done so, even so he would have been in for a long night of feeding the stove. Either way, we would have made the same call I am sure of it. He would have been tired from a long night either way, the results would have been the same, it would have been pointless to tough out another long night.
      It is important to note that he is an experienced winter camper. He knows the signs, and assured me that at no point did he believe it to be a dangerous situation..just uncomfortable....he will not bother me because he is uncomfortable. That is not enough. If he had the uncontrollable shivers, he would have woke me. I know him well (36 years) I know his skill set and capabilities, I trust and believe him. Like I said, I have seen him do more with less. We were well within the range of what we have done before. So in terms of me knowing better, I respectfully disagree. But it didn't work out so well for him this time. Sometimes, when you push yourselves, things don't work out. We were in a good situation to do what we did. It was fun. I'm sure he will adjust accordingly.
      There are a few different directions I could have gone with this video. I could have just not put it out at all. However, I wanted to use this as an example to others, things go wrong, don't be a hero. It happens. It's real.
      I think it good to put that message out there. Too many people are watching too many videos of people camping within a short walking distance of their truck......claiming to be deep in the wilderness making glamorous camping videos making it all look like peaches and cream. That is not real. Sometimes when you do stuff things happen. No smoking mirrors here. We were close to our truck, I wont claim otherwise, I was in good company, we were pushing ourselves, the conditions were right, and it didn't work out in our favor. Mother nature handed it to us. If you are doing things, eventually It happens. I have been through it more than once. That is how we learn. It's ok. Always best to play it safe.
      I thank you for your support of the channel David.

    No sense in pushing it when you don’t have to. Ed Viesturs, the famous mountaineer, has turned back from the summit of Everest and other peaks, sometimes a few hundred yards from the summit, because of conditions not looking right. And that’s after months of prep, and thousands of dollars. Rather than push ahead and get into a dangerous situation because of all the prep, he’ll turn back to fight the good fight another time.

    Wise move to bail. I would of done the same in a life or death situation. I've done many camping trips in Northern Ontario, Canada in bone chilling cold -35c to -40c without the wind chill. Dude,that would freeze the b@lls off a brass monkey..haha. I use the Bereg UP2 hot tent with insulated underpad,it's designed to withstand temperatures -50c to -60c..they use them in Siberia. One thing I learned over the yrs, I never sleep on the ground, I always use a cot, thermarest 6.9R, wool blanket and Browning -35c Klondike sleeping bag. I always bring a -15c mummy sleeping bag, just throw it in the Browning sleeping bag. I'll use the downfilled balaclava, sleep like a baby. The cabbage soup looked delicious 👍Thanks for the share Brother 👊 💥 🇨🇦🇺🇲💥👊

      Sounds like you have a pretty serious set up. Cots are nice. I use them when the weight isn't an issue, but I still need to use the same sleep system with the cot. So it really is a luxury item for me. They are comfortable. But I am very much at home on the ground. I like it. I currently have 3 different cots. The lightest one is 4.8 lbs. I would like one of those ultralight ones, but they are expensive.

    QUESTION: Spent the last 2 nights in my newly acquired Luxe Octopeak. Hit -10 and that was a bit nippy. My question is, what are the proper ways to use the vents when using a stove? I've heard several different things.

    • @ItsGoodintheWoods
      @ItsGoodintheWoods  2 роки тому +1

      There are many ways to go about it. I keep mine closed. There is usually enough air flow to keep everything working fine. If your tent is completely sealed by snow at the base, that is when the vent comes in handy

    Sorry for the bad trip, can't win em all. Smartest thing is recognizing and not pushing on for no good reason.
    I have yet another question for you 😅
    I noticed in previous videos where you were sent the pomoly stove and they forgot the rings, so you made your own. This is the only other appearance I see of that stove and of course wasn't discussed due to other circumstances. Did you have a bad experience with it and decided to no longer use it? I have been debating about a pomoly or seek outside. Pomoly's newest are 1mm thick vs i believe .3mm on seek. However seek is USA based vs china produced pomoly. which is a HUGEEE plus to me. so on that alone I think makes me really want to get the seek outside. Could you provide any information that would solidify that choice?
    Seek has their stove pipe offset from center and concerns the possibility of a tip over scenario and as stated earlier the thinness is a concern with warpage. Im not concerned with the look not being completely flat, but rather having bigger gaps and smoke just pouring out or not allowing a snug fit upon reassembly.
    Thanks as always!
    kind regards,
    Josh

    • @ItsGoodintheWoods
      @ItsGoodintheWoods  Рік тому +1

      They can't all be great trips. It turned out to be a good learning experience for my buddy. Makes the trip a valuable one.
      Pomoly never responded to me about those rings. And, lol, I was quite vocal on some of their facebook groups about their sketchy practice of using paying customers as their gear testing subjects....a couple of their tents in particular. Long story short, that led to me being banned from the groups, and despite many attempts to reach them through email, have been completely ignored. I took the hint, as a result No more Pomoly promoting on my channel.
      That said, In all fairness, I have to say that some of their tents are quite nice for the price. And they do make good stoves. Their stoves are heavy though. Despite their extra thickness, they do warp. For a person hiking in all their gear, weight matters. This is where Seek Outside shines.
      Seek outside stoves are Super light weight. They are not fast fold stoves. They require some simple on site assembling. And they do warp. All of these sound like cons, and they can be viewed as such. However, in my mind all of those short comings are worth it IF, you are a person that hauls gear for miles. They pack very flat taking up less space in your pack. The 5 minutes of assembling is much easier than carrying extra pounds for miles. And even though they warp, once assembled they hold their shape very well. It is when you take them apart you really notice the warping. My stove is 5 years old now and still going strong. Never had an issue that affected the performance. If a panel ever gets to be too bad, I will simply order a new panel. Speaking of performance, they are not the most efficient stoves. They require stoking every 1-2 hours. Again, worth dealing with when weight matters. Seek stoves will not be liked by car campers. There are better and cheaper stoves out there for that application. It is my personal opinion that when it comes to the adventurous type that hauls gear under their own power for miles, there is not a better stove on the market. And their customer service is top notch. They will actually talk with you on the phone, and they know what they are talking about!
      I hope this helps. Pleas feel free to ask any questions you may have. I'm here to help. Thanks for watching Josh

      Now on topic, I think I'm sold then. Seek outside! I plan on hauling gear for dang sure. It's a heavier bag but I am really interested in the mystery ranch terraframe 80. I like their "overload" feature if absolutely necessary.
      I don't wanna car camp. But not doing some crazy thru hike. I figure I'll do no more than 2-3 miles to start. No mountains here but once hit some, that would be a set up camp, and finish summit with day pack type scenario for me. Or venture out early next morning. I'm 6'2 205-215 depending on time of year. ( Thanksgiving definitely packs on the pounds 🤣 I'm a sucker for good food) but I figure if I can't carry at least 45-50 pounds then I have some other major issues to address 🤣
      Don't plan on doing any crazy 7-10 day adventures, as fun as they sound , unfortunately my job is very demanding and have my first son of 9 months. So those are out of question. Most likely can talk the Mrs into 2-3 day trips. Unless a big trip gets planned once a year.
