    Actually a lot 2.5 way speaker simply a full range two way speaker with midbass addon. These speakers have a bookshelf like solid soundstage with a more bodied sound. If upper woofer in a closed box sounds much cleaner because there is no port distortion. Also lower woofer in a bigger ported box can extend bass much deeper without effect midrange and helps kick bass. I'm using 2.5 way German Maestro Linea-S F-One speakers on my system with stereo subs (12" closed box) works nicely I think. Thanks mr. Paul for very informative and helpful videos on this channel.

    maybe a simpler way of explaining it is: its like a 3 way but the "midrange" goes all the way down, thats why its woofer sized.
    or you can say its a 2 way with added "subwoofer"

    • @trog69
      @trog69 5 років тому

      That certainly helps explain why my L810's are three-way rather than 2.5, considering the midrange is "only" a 2" driver coupled with a 1" tweeter. Of course, in practice, that 2" driver is capable of handling a lot of lower treble and midrange freq. and the dual 8" woofers are mostly only for low freq. sounds.

      The 2.5way speaker is not a 2 way speaker with a subwoofer. In right design, the extra woofer comes to compensate. Such as the baffle step compensation as "active". All this without losing efficiency and maintaining half a distortion. Many 2 way and even some 3 way loudspeakers don't use with this network compensation...

    I have a Polk large "center" speaker (from a yard sale) that has a tweeter in the center and the 6 inch drivers on either side. The one on the right covers the mid range and upper bass range. The one on the left is for the lower bass. Many people (including me at first) would claim that the left speaker was not working and think the driver was bad. It is easy to think this because the woofer seems to be not playing, but it is.

      The upper and lower woofer would not both extend down to the same 20hz in your example. The bass woofer would go to 20-500 and the mid range woofer would stop at 500 lowest (they would cross over so that both speakers play 500 at a lower db level so that the volume is still the same)

    • @homeboi808

      @ukspawn666
      That’s a true 3-way.
      A 2.5-way means no high-pass on the mid-woofer, thus it plays down to 20Hz.

    • @ukspawn666
      @ukspawn666 5 років тому

      @@homeboi808 well thats what i thought too but testing my 2.5 way and they don't work like that. The mid doesn't play as low as the bottom woofer. So either the manufacturer is wrong calling it a 2.5 or idk... Some strange shit

    The Thought behind a 2.5 way Box with, for example two 5" Drivers and a Subwoofer (like mine), is to help the first 5" Driver reproducing the low frequencies which are not covered by the SW anymore. Lets say, the Subwoofer goes up to 80Hz, so everything over 80Hz must be covered by a 5" Driver, which has not really the best physical/ mechanical precondition to do so, because of its small Membrane Area & little linear Coil Travel. For better Mid Bass Reproduction one has to use a bigger Driver, but this would ruin the elegant Shape of the Speaker. So, one can take just a second identical 5" Driver and let it help his "Brother" when the Job gets to Hard for one 5" alone to do. I'm just finishing my first DIY Speakers, which where made with practically no Budget and without expensive electric Tools, but with a ot of Sweat (no need for a gym when you can build a Speaker by Hand), some Tears and even sometimes a little Blood ;). The Subwoofer (12", 45l sealed, 2x TDA7293 parallel) goes up to 80Hz, the 1st 5" goes from there to 2800Hz, the 2nd goes to 500Hz, helping out at the Bass Frequencies just above the Crossover from the SW. All above 3000Hz is taken over by a 1" Dome Tweeter. Each Driver is powered by a 25W LM1875 ChipAmp. All Music is delivered by my PC with a Asus Xonar D2X Soundcard, the (Re-)Routing of the Output Channels (3 left, 3 right + 1 for the SW), the crossovers and all DSP Adjustments are made by the EQ APO Software and the Xonar Driver.
    I'm not completely done with it yet, and, as I am a total Noob in this, I expected not really much, but the result is ... WOW! I'm f.... impressed what is possible even with a, not much more than, zero Budget.

    Also the distance from the lower woofer to the tweeter could cause a phase problem .

    • @ozkol6552
      @ozkol6552 5 років тому +2

      In right design of 2.5 way, the lower woofer has no effect on the meeting point between upper midwoofer and Tweeter. What you say can be true when it comes to planning a 2 way with two woofers play a same frequency and cross with the tweeter. Like WWT array.

    This question comes from people that bought Pioneer "Andrew Jones Designer". I would just guess at this point of persons that are Concerned about this type of thing; would understand what I guess "WE" try to lean towards. That would be honest.
    The two bottom drivers are crossed at the same freak. :P the upper driver.... EHHH. I am going to purchase replacement speakers from parts express.
    Thanks Mr. Jones..... I will be putting a little reinforcements in the corners- Polly fill.
    I would be giving those 5 speakers the same treatment. I am just trying to figure what would be the best 4 in driver for the center channel.

      I'm going to try to answer for the x.5 way debacle.
      I hypothesize that if you have two identical drivers and you cross them over to adjacent bands in the spectrum you get a more seamless transition between them because you're not stacking up multiple sets of characteristics between the drivers.

  • @pdcragin33

    Does the mid+bass driver ever cut off at a “too low” frequency? If not, is that why it’s 2.5 way instead of 3-way? Or is there a different reason for the term 2.5-way?

    • @sudd3660
      @sudd3660 5 років тому +1

      the term mean it is between at 2 way and a 3 way, you can only make a 2.5 way one way if you think about it.
      if you have a high pass on the top woofer it becomes a 3 way and the benefit of having the 2 woofers produce bass is lost. if both woofers where playing midrange also then you get into problems unless you change the layout of the drivers accordingly.

    • @ukspawn666
      @ukspawn666 5 років тому

      I believe its due to using 2 of the same driver size where as a 3 way would use a larger bass woofer/smaller mid.

    2.5-way audio system ≠ 2.5-way speaker.
    A 2.5-way audio system would be 2 mid-high (or full range) speakers with 5 subwoofers.

      @@carlosoliveira-rc2xt You can't change set terminology as you please. Just because your car engine might be a V engine with 8 valves you can't call it a V8. The term V8 is reserved for V engines with 8 cylinders.
      In audio terminology, a number dot number audio system refers to how many speakers and subwoofers are in the system. 2.0 is a traditional stereo system, 5.1 is a traditional home theater system.
      Speakers are 1-way, 2-way, 3-way, 4-way, 5-way etc. A 1-way speaker doesn't have a crossover, a 3-way speaker has a 3-way crossover.

    • @carlosoliveira-rc2xt

      Many people make the mistake of calling their system a 7.4 because they have 4 subs. This is incorrect. It just means you have 4 subs. Unless every sub can be processed independently it would still be a 7.1 setup. I have a true 9.3 setup where the 3 subs can be set and processed independently.
      I've been in the business for 40 years and I know what a 2 1/2 way speaker is all about. My objection was to the .5 as having five woofers or subs. I have yet to see a processor that does this.

    • @LincolnRon
      @LincolnRon 5 років тому

      @@carlosoliveira-rc2xt You have yet to see an x.5 system because one doesn't exist as far as I know. And yes the second number isn't how many sub boxes there are, but how many subs the audio system has. It's not uncommon for a 2.1 PA system to have six 2-way speakers and four 2x18" subwoofers. Just like a 3-way speaker can have two 12" woofers, three 4" midrange drivers, and seven 1" tweeters.

      LOL, ya, that's funny. I thought...WTF? L/R mains with 5 subs? Maybe it should be 2½ way speaker? So, what makes a 2½ way speaker different than a standard 3-way? Is it using 2 woofers, say, a 12" and an 8" to cross over from say 100Hz to the 8", then the 8" hands off freqs above 500Hz to the midrange? So, the cab would have 4 drivers then.
