I can't agree with you on the fact that a customer would not feel that they don't have something exclusive because at that price, you're paying for performance first. I don't think most people are the style hawk, that you are. If your complaint is that the speaker isn't "pretty" enough to feel special, I do feel like you're over thinking it. Just comparing the size of the speaker to its performance as you described, will leave buyers in a very Happy place.

If I have to spend $14,000 on a pair of speakers then it has to be special and handcrafted from the brand's home country. Because you're not only buying a certain product, you're also buying the heritage, history and reputation. I don't mind paying extra for speaker's like Sonus faber or musical instruments like Martin Guitars. For as long as they are hand made with love and passion from their country of origin.

Wow!!! Forget the product review, this is the best QOTD in a long time. The gap from midfi to hifi is almost a lateral move nowadays. The mid level companies are exposing the hi end and saying we know where you get your drivers and what you pay for them. We can do it too and sound just as good. The hi end are still winning on fit and finish, but is that enough? Not for most of us.

The discussion at the end of this review highlights one of the many reasons this channel is a valuable resource to all listeners from music lovers everywhere, to the beginning audiophile, to the C.E.O. of a high end audio company. Mr. Robinson’s ability to humbly step outside of himself and draw upon his years of experience not only with audio but with conversing with listeners of all types to paint a picture of the pros and cons of a loudspeaker with a wink back to each kind of listener is invaluable. Not only is he providing that short hand for the viewer, he is doing it while avoiding unseen industry mine fields and bias all while communicating with the bedside manner of a friend.

I’m always amazed how some speakers with 6.5 inch woofers can dig deep / go full range while so many others can’t. Realize technology and cabinet come into play but so cool these sized woofers are bringing the bass! Thank you Andrew and Kristi for a great Sunday kick off!

Any sound under 80Hz are not from 6.5 inch woofer. Nobody can change laws of physics yet. It's from the port that are tuned very low. Port sound always carries very high percentage distortion.

You have verified what I like and enjoy with the work that the two of you do so well together. You select a wide range of products to review and ask questions to enlighten your viewers and make them think and question their perceptions and misperceptions and I love that. You are helping to remove the stigma that people who are active in this hobby with strict budget considerations have regarding individuals with deeper pockets who consider these individuals as having more money than brains. I appreciate the opportunity to have something new to think about and to discuss ideas, thank you.

I have the Platinum PL500 II and find them phenomenal. I don't care if they are built in China. If they were built in North America or Europe, it would cost double or triple. Also, MA 100% develops and builds all their drivers in-house themselves, which not many companies do. I like the fact that made in China saved me money 😂 The technology and R&D behind their drivers are easily available online to read, especially on how much engineering has gone into them!

@kuntja Well if they were made in the UK, they would have proudly stated that. I just double-checked the plinth of my PL 500 and the boxes, no where does it say UK nor China, so go figure. But as far as search online and forums they started moving production to China starting year 2004.

Those speakers are admittedly absolutely gorgeous. Awesome discussion. Agree there is lots of competition around that price point. Would probably get La Scalas near that price. Despite some of these higher end speakers being beautiful, I would ultimately be most moved by just the sound quality.

The biggest problem with the Platinums is they look plain. It's very much like a Lexus ES which is just a nice Toyota Camry. Once you're in this price range, not only must your speakers sound good, they also have to look spectacular and be a marvel of modern engineering. The B&W 800s look and sound spectacular. The Focal Sopras look and sound spectacular. The Monitor Platinums look like Monitor Golds with maybe a little more polish.

  • @billarmstrong5568

Firstly, most hardcore audiophiles, at least the wealthier ones, wouldn't consider these or even the latest B&W 800 series to be proper fully-fledged 'high-end' audio.
Brands like Tidal, Kharma, Borresen, Wilson Benesch, Vivid Audio, Rockport, Avalon etc, they are what your Porsche/Ferrari buyer is far more likely to opt for if s/he is as passionate about music as they are about cars.
And while I would agree that speakers at the price level of the MA Platinums or KEF Metas do indeed sound better than ever there is still a significant gap sonically between them and the real cost-no-object stuff. It's nice to sometines imagine that there isn't but it just ain't so...
Finally, I did recently hear at some length the Yamaha NS-2000A that Andrew mentions and I thought they were an absolute knockout. I currently run big active ATCs but I firmly believe you could build an exceptional sounding high value system around the NSs.
Cheers, thx for all your hard work

OUTSTANDING review. This is the hi-fi real talk that makes this channel elite.
To return to the car analogy, perhaps this speaker has a similar problem to Aston Martin: it obviously exudes luxury and excellence, but at that price point, looking "normal" defeats the purpose (which is to represent a pinnacle and a pinnacle by definition isn't ordinary).
A platinum 200 customer is probably closer to a Kef Blade 2 Meta buyer than a R11 Meta buyer, so this point you've raised IS necessary to address, even if awkward or unfair.
    Thanks as always.

I have the platinum 100 3g and I can say. I find that Monitor Audio may not be best in one category of music but they are excellent allrounders, from instrumental to electronic music . Jazz, classic to rock, pop, hip hop. Clear midrange, good, extended high without being bright and excellent bass from a book shelf. For my room 12 x 14. I don’t need a sub.

Thanks for the wonderful review as always. Reviews need to include subjective assessments and that’s what makes you different and fun. I get the fact that these are fairly high end speakers but comparisons with top performers in the VFM segment such as Polk R700 would be useful just to understand the gap between the tiers. Thanks and keep up the good work!

My current speakers (Martin Logan XT B100s - which I purchased based on this channel's review) are amazing. Simply wonderful. I love them. They are made in China. Am I ok with that? Yes. They are however $1600 a pair and I know that I'm getting a mass-manufactured commodity. While they sound amazing and I'm perfectly happy, I went in with the goal of sound and value trumping any other aspects. If I'm going to drop $14k for a luxury item like speakers, my mindset is altogether different. Value is not what I'm looking for at that price bracket. They better freaking be hand made by the company that designed them, not sub-contracted out. The problem is when you drop that kind of money on a luxury item, people want a romantic/human story or connection with whatever it is they are buying. They want a less industrially produced product, and want something with a purposeful human touch. Scarcity is part of that (Andrew used to term "exclusive"), but really it's only scarce or exclusive because that kind of bespoke work doesn't scale to industrial proportions.
Sub-contracting out your manufacturing is fine when you are moving product as a commodity, it is not fine however when you are trying to tap into something else like Andrew alluded to with Ferrari. People drop more money on hand made furniture or handbags because the buyer can imagine the passion and work happening by some skilled tradesperson in a boutique workshop. When something says "Made in China" it's almost impossible to conjure up the same idea for whatever the product is. Someday that perception may change (just like it did with Japanese products), but for now that is a massive ding against this product unfortunately.

Placing each speaker properly into its point in a continuous river of speakers using pricing, looks, build, sound structure, tonality, visual appeal, branding, etc... etc... has got to be the hardest thing to do for a plethora of audiophiles and Robert in Iowa. Gotta tell you, was not at all interested in these speakers due to the price. But the conversation at the end crystallised for me why this channel is so great. The dichotomy between the two of you means every now and then, we really get a deep dive into some of the big (first world, I know) issues we all have trying to pick one over the other. Andrew really nailed it for me with the analogy of the speakers on an island. We are living in a golden era where there are so many fantastic products. The real issue is can you stop yourself from looking to the left.
The theory you're only as good as the people you work with is exemplified here. Every reviewer would be elevated if they had a Kristi.

I own the Anthem STR integrated with the MA Platinum II 200 and even do mine are last models, what you described is more or less IMO applicable to the PL II200. Other than getting a great deal when I purchase them my priority was on speakers with no treble fatigue, controlled articulated bass and these are definitely that. I do get what you meen on the competition at this price point, but I will say I am one of the few that likes more traditional look than WOW factor on speaker looks. Great review like always, thanks.👍👍

Big league review Andrew. I'm thrilled that you continue to venture into true high end speakers and components. You may want to try to get your hands on a pair of Paradigm Persona 3f or 5f speakers. I promise that paired with Anthem STR integrated (sister brand to Paradigm) and a quality subwoofer (10 or 12') the Personas will be on your wow list. The AMT tweeter in the Platinum 200 delivers excellent detail, but is a bit pronounced depending on the recording. The Personas have Beryllium midrange and tweeter, they deliver crystal clear transparency without harshness or bringing too much attention to the speaker rather than the music. I fully understand your struggle with high cost speakers and components (above $10k) in comparison with those in the sweet spot of $3-6K, that deliver 85% of the higher cost items. However, for those of us who can afford the higher cost items that deliver a 10 to 15% sonic improvement they're worth it. So please, don't give up on the high end. Thank you both.

For me, jumping from mid tier to high end it has to have a unique sound as well as design. For the price of these, they don't stand out from others of lesser price. "high end" is more costlier than ever across all "hobbies" at this point, at a time when a civic SI is 40k+ and an M3 is easily in the 80-100k range, 20k just isn't what it used to be.
In my opinion a high end speaker needs to do more than sound good, it needs to evoke other emotions. Those emotions could be intrigue at something like Walsh, or the hyphens you mentioned, or just admiration at the beauty and craftsmanship of something like these platinums. I think that is what differentiates these speakers from the lower monitor audio lines or something like a R700, they are truly beautiful and are designed to be more of a piece of furniture instead of a simple speaker. The hyphens make you ask "what is that?" while the platinums just make you admire their beauty. To go back to your car reference, these are a porsche cayman GTS, you can order one, it will come eventually, and it will be incredibly well made and competent, without having the exclusivity of a GT4.

As someone who (finally) took delivery of a pair of Wilson speakers, it was pride of ownership; Wilson was always an aspirational brand to me. I cross shopped SabrinaX against Magico A3s, and while the Magicos didn’t sound as good to me, the sound itself didn’t justify spending an additional 6k on the Wilsons. It was the other intangibles I mentioned that sealed the deal.

Very interesting and thought provoking review. I'm running the Monitor Audio Gold 300s with Marantz Model 30 + SACD 30N.
The synergy between the warmth of the Marantz sound and the dynamics and resolution of the Monitor Audios float my boat.
And in UK, Gold 300s are half the price of Platinum 200s and the finish/appearance is equal and equally exquisite. They're also very similar in size.
Don't doubt the Platinum with better amplification will sound 'better' - as you say, the buyer has a reasonable expectation to get more if one pays more.
The question is how much one values the 'improvement' at effectively double the total price?
Keep up the good work guys :)

It's small improvements. You get slightly better motor structure for the bass (same cones though). You get the "tapered midrange chamber". How much will that be audible? Idk. Likely a stronger cabinet.
But at 2.2x the cost it is a lot to swallow

Love seeing higher end reviews like this! For my take at this price point a buyer should expect a great sounding speaker, even if the sound signature has a slightly different profile to other speakers in the same range. To an extent it comes down to cabinetry and the visual signature as much as the sound. Ferrari is a great example of that as you mentioned. Pininfarina matters as much as Binnoto.

Happy Sunday, good people! Nice to see another Anthem piece on your bench. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the STR line. Your review of the MRX 740 convinced me to hold my money until the fan noise and mobile app issues are sorted.
In the realm of speakers, neutrality is the real value (my fiancée is a brass player). With that in mind, I outfitted us with a kit of Cambridge Audio SX-80s and Aeros on stands, with the SX-70 center. I know this is a budget kit, but to my ears, it’s 85% of the Wharfdale sound for pennies on the dollar.
It’s all about putting your money where it’s most valuable. We might want to go to Tokyo to hear some jazz, or spend a weekend in Berlin with the Philharmonic…

A sleeper speaker to me doesn't have a weird eye catching design, don't stand out, and you look at it and it just looks like a normal speaker to most people, but when you get them going your like holy shit that incredible. Everyone forgets there is never going to be a perfect speaker for everyone, it's based on the individual perception. Late to comment. But to answer a few questions… 1. NO, a sub is NOT needed for music. 2. To bridge the gap from mid to high end speakers requires, for me, that they be designed, engineered and built ALL IN house, drivers and all. And to Andrews point, YES, logistics DO matter at the “higher end” of things. I have been a B&W fan boy for decades for these reasons. I LOVE Andrew’s honest and pragmatic approach to his reviews. He keeps things REAL (even taking risks doing so, 606 S2s anyone), and I keep coming back and respecting him more for it. BRAVO ANDREW!!!

23:38 Well first off, good morning to you both. I hope you have had a great weekend so far. I absolutely hands down. Will say this is one of the best in my top five videos you both have done together. The conversation is very, very heartfelt and most of all what I always say about your channel honest! I can't express that enough of the sheer level of honesty. You guys are the reasons why I do what I do. But it is getting harder and harder to really figure out. Why should I spend this much like these 15,000 speakers and not get a pair of $8,000 bookshelf speakers and pair it with a $1,000 subwoofer? That question will forever. No matter who answers will forever never be answered correctly. And this is the same conversation that happens with TVs. Yes, if you buy a Sony or an LG or a Samsung you are getting slightly better processing And I mean slightly. Whereas you can buy a Hisense or TCL and get damn near the same level of performance. It will always be harder and harder to choose and the only other thing I can say is you have to look at things as an investment for longevity. Will those 15,000 speakers out last the $8,000 pair or the $500 pair? And in my opinion, if you're going to buy expensive speakers, you are not going to buy another pair for at least 10 years or more. Especially if it is where money is a factor, but you make enough to afford them. I guess the short answer would be. I would look more at the longevity and choose based off of that decision. PS. Sorry for the long answer 😂 There is just so much to cover

    • @andrewrobinsonreviews
      @andrewrobinsonreviews  9 місяців тому +4

I appreciate your "long answer" Nick. And I, like you, fear there is no "right" answer to a lot of these questions. As time and tech has progressed, one thing is for certain, the gap that used to exist between high-end or even just name brand products and more middle of the road brands has shrunk and shrunk rapidly. To the point that if we really wanted to get super nerdy we would see that even the high-end stuff is routinely made by or using parts from brands deemed "low to mid-tier". So the plot only thickens. I suppose discussions such as these are part of what makes the hobby fun, but for a lot of folks it's also what makes it maddening.

I think a problem with Monitor Audio selling in the U.S. is taxes and dealer markups. The Platinum 200 is £9K here in the UK with the KEF R11 Metas being available for £5.5K and B&W 803 D4 being £14K and 802 D4 £24K. I believe this shifts the balance of price per performance and expectations a bit here in the UK and places the PL200 more accurately in the rankings.

Math class time, I googled this. 9,000 Pounds sterling equals
$11,145.74 United States Dollars, like he said, a 10 ish thousand dollar speaker, I assume the reference to being manufactured in a different country, shipping is a factor, whether it's purchased in the U.K. or the U.S. I might be wrong, but I would also imagine tariffs would not be introduced in this case. Let's look at the B&W 805 D4 at 7 K in the UK, and $8,500 in the US. Lets Google that, let's see 7,000 pounds = 8,668.42 United States Dollar, an almost straight exchange, no tariffs added to a product made in the UK. The Naim Classic 200 system, 17,100 in the UK, in that video, they correctly thought it would cost 21K USD, the price is 27K in the US. I'm not sure if calling them out is intentional, but I like what these 2 are doing, they have our backs. Great products but why the premium price? I don't think he's saying 14 k is too much for great speakers, I think he's throwing hints, saying, guys, watch your cash, you might be getting short changed, you should be getting some change back from your 14K for this particular model.

    • @markym3870
      @markym3870 9 місяців тому

@@JC-qc5nx I think it is a shame because I believe Monitor Audio is a great brand providing exceptional value in the UK but I feel that the additional costs being added to customers in the USA is not helping their status within that market. It is also worth noting that the UK prices include 17.5% tax which will not be included on exports and correct me if I am wrong but isn't he average VAT only 9% in the USA which really does land the PL200 as a $10k speaker.

Context could be strengthened by looping back when comparing the others you mentioned by providing your takes on the issues of impedence, sensitivity, how finicky these and the others play with other amps/gear, warranty, resale (depreciation), and doing this is an excel chart format. Since gear changes all the time, I for one do not like gear that does not play well with many, various types of amps. The 14 grand for example might be much easier ro swallow if the speakers were for example 94 sensitive, and sounded great on many amps less than 10 grand. Also with the rapid advances in class D for example, it would be great to see how these sound moving that direction. I'm very grateful for your channel. Great review and summary from you both!
