You make more sense than every other tutorial maker combined. To me at least.
+Brandi V awesome to hear :)
Two things to point out.
1) To edit the text, you must either ungroup or toggle the effect off. It's the only way to properly see your editing of the text.
2) Once you Expand Appearance, the text becomes a shape and can not be edited outside of moving points. So be sure your text is correct before expanding. Also have a non-expanded copy of the group as a backup in case you want to change the text later.
Great tutorial
Thanks for pointing those out SEspider! Much appreciated, I must have forgotten to mention turning the effect off to make editing a little bit easier. To anyone that doesn't know how to do that, just go to window ---> appearance and make sure that window is open. Then in the appearance window when you select your banner it will show the effect applied. Just uncheck that eyeball and the effect will turn off making things easier to edit.
Thanks again SEspider!
Matt Borchert
Glad I could help.
You showed how to hide the effect but not how to brinf the window up (I think). You didn't touch on changing the text at all however. So I chimed in. ;)
Keep up the great work
I've been making banners the hard way! Thank you for saving me time and frustration! Great tut!
BEST TUTORIAL EVER! Thank you for all the command keys shortcuts. You are a life saver!
This is exactly the element I was looking for to make.
You made it easy to understand by not assuming we should all be AI experts and do appreciate that.
Thanks for your help.
Thanks for the amazing tutorial - You are a very gifted teacher and all your examples are clear and easy to follow !
Thanks. Gotta love that warp tool! You pointed out a couple of benefits of keeping this an effect instead of expanding it: with an effect you can go into the appearance panel and make changes to your warp and it's a bit easier to make adjustments to individual anchor points, albeit with a little guesswork.
Matt thanks so much. I feel so lame, I want to design stuff but I'll come to youtube to figure out *how* to get what I want on the screen. You made this so easy-all you tut people on YT are amazing.
adarkerlight No problem, and no reason to feel lame! UA-cam is a great avenue to learn without having to pay the INSANE prices for school (at least in the US). The internet is a wonderful thing for picking up knowledge of all sorts =D

OK. So you did this in 2013, and I don't really use Illustrator. But, I did enjoy watching your tutorial. Very good indeed. And why are there any dislikes? Even as a non Illustrator user, I found this to be pretty useful. I do have Illustrator and I may even try it. Thanks.
Thank you Rik!

Well done. Good pace. Great explaining. And you don't get all ADD with your cursor by repeatedly circling it on the screen!

Matt- Thank you so much for these video tutorials! So easy to understand and follow along. I have a question on this banner video. On the image for the video, there is a arc of stars. I am trying to create an arc of stars (think a severe arch, almost like a military circle of stars) and the star graphic keeps distorting the ends of the star images. Do you have a video among your collection that could assist me in preventing this distortion from occurring? I have searched many to no avail. Thanks again so much. -Mike
Thank You Sir cool and easy

That was helpful
Thank you!!! :)
nice tutorial, LIKE!!
where can I find CAP and CORNER? the things at the beginning.
i like it
Awesome tutorial. I did it, but when I "arc'd", the text did not stay evenly centered from the top & bottom, but was closer to the bottom line. The left and right were perfect, but I am sure it's an easy fix. What can I do to ensure that my text stays evenly centered after I hit "arc"?
Make sure you have everything grouped up when you apply the arc. Just select it all then hit Ctrl+G on a PC or Command+G on a PC to group things.
THANK YOU SIR..
Hey there, i know it's been a long time since you've dont this video but still.
I'm struggling with Photoshop now. I wanna make a ribbon in the first way you showed, but the problem is that when i add an anchor point and later choose Direct Selection Tool, when i move the cursor (from the chosen point) it changes the figure, but it's not made with a corner, it's being a rounded shape (like a parabola) . What settings should i change so that it's done with angle?
hey bud! i got the rectangle, com c, com v...but when i zoom in, i don't have the center points and i don't know how to scale left to right, it just moves the entire rectangle. what am i doing wrong?
sorry to sound so novice but I'm trying to learn =)
thanks!
Thanks.
nice
really nice! :)
thanks much, I appreciate it =)
HEY- I need your help... I have created the first banner just fine. When I went to warp the next one it doesn't look like yours. Its kind of blurry... what am I doing wrong! PLEASE HELP!
im stuck at the plus sign! when you say click the plus line on the square.. assuming you mean Ctrl and plus?
BeautyMasked If you just hit the + button it will make the pen tool switch to add a point. (I think the pen tool sometimes does that automatically when you hover over a line, but this makes sure that it does it).
Once you add a point over where the square is, you'll know you're at roughly the center of the banner's side.
Can you edit the text within the completed banner?
You can! You might have to double click into it in order to edit since the elements are grouped.
Hi, thanks for the great video...
I have a problem however when I try to send the small recently cut square to the back...it won't do it...any suggestions?
Thanks once again! :)
It might be on another layer. Just make sure they're on the same layer in your layers palette.
Yes it was, thank you very much!!! ;)
Awesome; happy to help!
How do you merge these shapes so the "behind the scenes" outlines are removed?
To get rid of the "behind the scenes" stuff, just fill the shapes with a color. If that's not your intention, you'll need to expand all, then use the pathfinder palette to merge the shapes.
What font did you use on the banners?
It's called Santana, it should be free on fontsquirrel. It has some objects in the O's that I removed, but otherwise I left it alone.
I loved the voice too.. ;-)
hahahahaah
what software r you using to make this stuff?
+Venkatesh Nimbalkar adobe illustrator.
Warp isn't on indesign... is there any other way to do it ?
Do you only have Indesign? I would definitely do this in Illustrator, as opposed to INDD, if you have illustrator.
My square shapes only have 4 anchors point. What's the problem?
Are you selecting them with the selection tool (black arrow)? Also another (and maybe better way) of doing that part is to hit ctrl + u on a pc, or command + u on a mac to turn on smart guides. Them just add a point somewhere near the middle, and when you're dragging it towards the center to make the indent using the white arrow direct selection tool, it should draw an "intersect" line for the center of the object. Just line the indent up with the intersect line and you should be good to go. You can see that in action in my multi-tier banner tutorial.
My mistake! Thanks for that =)
I cant find the pluss sign on the left! So frustrating!!!!
If you hit the "+" sign on your keyboard it should automatically select it, otherwise click and hold over the pen tool on the toolbar and the option to select the add a point should come up while you're still holding the mouse down.
Thanks, you are awesome! :)
Why is your properties at the top of the bar, while mine is at the left side? -Adobe Illustrator
