Hello Red, fantastic filming of the grain transshipment and the great UP freight trains. IOWA is a very beautiful country and very interesting for me. Thank you for the wonderful video and all the best to you, stay healthy and best wishes Wolfgang
@wolfgangpfeilergartenbahnd6530 Hey Wolfgang! Thanks, plenty of corn in this state. Most of the fall foliage is gone with the recent rain and wind. We did need the rain though! Have a good one👍
Thanks for the coverage of the Corn Bowl in LaPorte that aerial view really puts it in perspective as to how large they are. In fact it looks like they have the framework up for a second one just across the road. They have that look as if they are a large football field but especially a hockey rink. I wouldn't be surprised if that if that ramp under the trailer also has a scale built into it to keep track of the tonnage. There's a firm that advertises them almost every week on the agricultural summary TV show. Also just watching how fast that corn flows out of the trailer is a sad reminder of how many farmers and elevator workers suffocate every year when they get trapped . They still have the lengthy task of laying out and tucking in the tarps and then you'll start hearing the hum of all the blowers trying to keep the moisture level in check. Alas every time you handle this grain it costs money but there was good news that Mexico just bought a substantial amount of corn from the US. Hopefully the rail system can keep up with the volume going there unlike 2 months ago where they had embargoes in place. Thanks for keeping us appraised of the Harvest progress
@paulbergen9114 You're welcome Paul! I believe a lot of farmers wear safety harnesses now when going into elevators. I would guess the corn on the ground would be the first to go. Sounds like the CPKC will be busy with a lot of corn going to Mexico. I'd say the harvest is 90 percent done. Dry conditions sure did help for that plus less drying needed for corn👍
The pile of corn in the video was trapped yesterday (10-30-2024). They started in the morning and finished early afternoon, just ahead of a soaking rain late afternoon into the evening. Thanks for the drone view of the elevator, i want to scratch build the structure that loads the grain cars for my layout.
Thats a pretty amazing pile of corn Red and I’m glad your teaching the youngster the details of the operation, I’m sure he learns a ton about the RR from you too. Love seeing them ‘hot’ priorities with 5 units on the head, all notch 8, 22,000hp rolling through💪🏼. I’m praying for our farmers Red, if this election goes the wrong way we are doomed. I’m voting for secure borders, no wars, no inflation and everyone was making money, just like how things were from 2016-2020. Have a good one Red👍🏼😎🇺🇸
@stretchlimo7275 Yo STRETCH LIMO! Yeah it's too bad the price of corn is so low. We have piles like that all over the place. I'm with you on the issues. The harvest is pretty much over around here. Gotta love the big power in notch 8👍
Good lesson for people. The corn will suck you in as it's moving. The corn elevator had a ramp because the whole thing is movable. Wow big power speedy stack trains thank you Red.
@redsiowatrainvideos6645 I help a farmer, and there are a lot of things that can hurt -kill you.. being aware and doing things right, and it's a good part-time job.
Storing corn for over a year is another example of a supply chain that incurs additional costs , while the farmer doesn't get paid ( and pays for extended storage ). Brazil, Russia are relatively newer exporters of corn to China , so the US dollar and the US farmer are suppliers of last resort.
@redsiowatrainvideos6645 a few years ago, i had a crew transport job. It overlapped coal and grain. The coal was straightforward, but the grain was interesting, and more involved, as there were very different methods of storage. Like the coal, grain elevators were easy, but one area had outdoor storage with a large circle of track, and a stationary loading conveyor. They would pull the empty train in on the circular track, put the engines in granny low, and load 'em up. It was a really slick operation to say the least!
I thought Iowa Gold are potatoes 😂 Red JR with you this time? Cannot start early enough with learning everything about the RR. You have to pass on what your dad tought you. 😉🇺🇸
That is a gigantic pile of corn sitting on the ground in LaPorte City, Iowa, Red! It is amazing how fast they can unload the semi-trailer loaded with corn and then convey it to the top of the pile. Thank you for the update on the corn harvest in this part of Iowa. The two trains that you captured in Montour, Iowa were in a hurry to get to their next crew change points. (Posted on 30 October 2024 at 2030 CDT.)
My gosh, A great amount of corn just out laying around for the next tornado to blow it away. There has to be a better way to store abundance. How do they get paid for the delivery of corn? Is this food grade or made into gas additive. need to put hatches on those containers to store corn

@davidsnider1703 You're welcome David S! Yeah those elevators can be dangerous. A lot of farmers use harnesses nowadays when working in the bins.
Great video red that's alot of work putting corn on the ground an picking up I worked at an elevator when I was in my late teens a early 20,s

Never seen this Done before but I’m sure they have to do whatever is Necessary to Offload the Corn somewhere. 🤔👍
wow thats a lot of corn !!
Do they cover the outdoor storage with giant tarps, or just let it sit out in the weather🤔?
@paulsmith5398 A lot of places do cover it up. Probably disappears pretty quick once the railroad gets hauling👍

Looks like they are cutting back on using DPUs and going more with headend power.
Westbound haul’n arse 👍
The corn piling something most Americans don’t get to see. But, where were the birds? I would expect to see them by the dozens!
@johncamp2567 Probably no birds because of all the corn spilled all over this time of year👍
Nice video!
I thought Iowa Gold are potatoes 😂 Red JR with you this time? Cannot start early enough with learning everything about the RR. You have to pass on what your dad tought you. 😉🇺🇸
@araneaetvelivolum1086 Yes Aranea knowledge is great! Potatoes are Idaho gold. Iowa is the Tall Corn state👍
@redsiowatrainvideos6645 oh ja, you are right, I got that completely mixed up 😂
Spent a week from 10/19-24 in Cedar Rapids and Des Moines. The harvest was incredibly dusty.
@@TonyTruth-s9z Sure was, especially the beans!
Glad you told us it was shipped quickly. Hard to believe the elevator god not have hoppers in waiting. Could be a good sign ? Of a bumper crop year?
Did not
@@tomroise9426 Looked like a good crop to me. Too bad the price of corn is so low. Those piles are very common around here.
🚂😎👍🚂
Excuse me for my ignorance, but what do they do with that stock pile of corn?? My guess is package it up for birds and animal food..?
@jamesgeorge5276 Most likely it will go to an ag processor like ADM.
Cool stuff Red!! So, do they use the belts to move it from ground storage into elevator to load RR cars?
@danlowe8684 Thanks Dan! Not real sure how they transfer from the pile.
Very interesting.
+1 subs 😎👍
@heiwitzer Thanks H Heiwitzer!
Red......who was your young sidekick at LaPorte City?

@thomasmackowiak You're welcome Thomas! I like looking down in the hopper as it unloads. That's quite a few rail car loads in that pile👍

You'd think all this time farming corn the farmers or businesses would have built more storage so they don't have to dump it on the ground
@@daveschmitt4499 It's not usually on the ground for long.
Can you rent the neighbors silos or can you just hire some workers to build some silos for you? 😊
Most likely all the silos are full. I believe the corn on the ground is the first to be sold or shipped.
