He is 50 years old here and is so magnificent and handsome as well. What a gift to this world. Even Pavarotti paid tribute to him stating he had " vocal chords of steel" Thank you for posting my favorite tenor, Peter Gibbons, greatly appreciated.

@@Kjuken69 Please, Björling the best? People should stop comparing one with the others. They all had their strengths and weaknesses. It is always in the ears of a listener and their preferences..... given the high number of Italian tenors with different voices and style it is not smart to assign Corelli to the "Italian way" of singing. What can be said is that voices like his could typically blossom in Italy.

The Rock Hudson of Opera, I couldn't take my eyes off him - we were in the 8th row center!

Pavarotti said Corelli had chords of steel. What good technique does for a voice.

He's obviously diminished from what he was 10 years prior but even a diminished Corelli is superior to most tenors on their best day.

@@JohnDavidDunlap Yours is a very blanket statement. Let's be more specific. Even tenors 10 years older than he is here wouldn't sing the Rigoletto arias as badly as he, and the rest is an exercise in "let's see how loud I can be" and not much else beside

I am hard put to choose between him and Del Monaco, but I slightly prefer Del Monaco simply because of his ability to go from oh so very soft and gentle to full force and back again in a moment. Apart from him I have only heard that in old 78 recordings of Gigli.
I am hesitant to name any as absolutely unmatchable, because there are such wonderful voices from the earliest recordings from prior to records, and some them were clearly as great in their time if only the technology had allowed for it to truly come across. Also remember it is the entertainment business. There will have been those whose 'faces did not fit', who didn't have the right contacts. It was a very difficult business to break in to. Zanatello was stronger than Caruso and outsung him on stage in NY. The latter reputedly had mafia backing and it was ensured Zanatello wouldn't sing in NY again. He returned Italy and built an open air opera house with no microphones allowed, and stated "Only REAL singers will sing here". Caruso never did. He was good but not the best. He couldn't have made himself heard well enough at back of Zanatello's open air opera house.
Zanatello went on to obtain moderate success but not that which he well deserved, because of not being able to work in NY.
Del Monaco also used recordings of Zanatello to help train his own voice. Not a lot of people know that.
Corelli was among the most magnificent though. I wish I could have afforded to travel and hear he and his peers live. In my now twilight years such memories would be wonderful to lose myself in whilst listening to their tremendous voices.

I took one lesson with Corelli in NYC. Not a word of English and a complete waste of tuition. Nice to meet him, but nothing was taught. Apparently he didn't harbor Lauri Volpi's sense of collaboration he so admired.

A very congenial and modest man, with an unbelievable voice. Was suppoosed to follow up with him in Italy unfortunately he became ill. Never got to see him again.
