- In this video, I'll go over the feature options when you are doing a hiking activity using the garmin instinct.
The hike activity profile does a few things: has a number of customized features like data screen that would be useful while hiking and when syncing with garmin connect, it will categorize the activity as hiking as opposed to uncategorized.
TO START A HIKE
1. Press the GPS button and select the hike profile.
2. Press the GPS button again. This will let the GPS chip acquire satellite signals to establish your current position.
3. Once you get the checkmark, PRESS on the GPS button a final time to start recording the activity.
TO SAVE A WAYPOINT WHILE HIKING
1. Press and hold the GPS button.
2. Your current location is saved, PRESS the DOWN button to either edit, change icon or manually edit the coordinates.
TO PAUSE SAVE or DISCARD an ACTIVITY
1. Press the GPS button and wait a few seconds, you will see a menu where you can:
a. Resume
b. Save
c. Resume Later
d. Add a lap
e. Navigate back to start, following your path up to that point.
f. discard activity.
HOW TO ACCESS ADDITIONAL NAVIGATION FEATURES & HIKING SETTINGS
1. Press and Hold the MENU button, scroll down where you can adjust the data screens, alerts and auto pause, auto lap settings for the hike activity.
2. You also access navigation features like
a. navigating back to start using trackback or straight line
b. access saved locations or waypoints
c. access saved courses or routes
d. access previous activities
e. sight n go

Thanks. It AMAZES me that Garmin didn't think to add a setting to input the weight of the Rucksack or Bag that is being carried for the hike.
I guess if you carry more, your heart will pump more, so the watch will detect it anyway. But yes, it sounds like a good idea
This is the first tutorial that was clear and easy to follow. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! :)
Thank you
can we make and download hiking video activity from garmin app?
So, I did a hike and it didn't work properly. After the hike I went to check my data and it was messed up...
- Started at 50m elevation and peak was at 650m. Yet, my total ascent shows 200m, and my total descent shows around 550m.
- The watch goes in an out when you have the auto pause enabled. I start my hike and immediately it pauses because I am stopped, but when I start to move it unpauses and pauses again and then unpauses. Gets annoying. Happens every time.
- I ended up turning off auto pause and thought I could manually pause the hike, but then the whole time data is wrong. Says it took me 1hr 15min to reach summit when it was actually 2hrs 15min. Same with the descent, same data.
- My GPS map was also a bit messes up, there was a part where it was completely off course to where I was.
Whats going on?
Hi. Do these tutorials apply to the Solar as well?
Yes It should.
Thanks. They're very helpful.
I've been carrying an old etrex gps for years. I really just want something that will remember the position of my car!
Is this for me?
Just need to save the waypoint or start the activity and use the trackback to get back to start.
Thanks! But how can I change the name of a saved waypoint?
Yes, just go to the waypoint list and when you select a waypoint you can get to the menu and you should see « edit »
Can I enter or import waypoints via App?
if i recall, you could using the explore app.
@@AvoidingChores Yep. It works great!
So much easier, but not a pain if you didn’t have it.
why did it have a distance of .02 at 1:36 when you did not move at all?
Due to the accuracy of the satellite signals the watch is receiving. Nowadays you get +/- 3-9m (9-29ft) accuracy radius under good conditions to pinpoint your location but there’s always some “drift”.
Can we access the track back function after we saved the activities??
Not track back but regular navigation in this case
@@AvoidingChores regular navigation to the starting point, so we need to save the starting point gps coordinate isn't it
Yup typically an example would be to waypoint your vehicle before you start
What is UltrTrak. Everyone shows where it is, but not what it is. I know it saves battery and less accurate, but what else? I want to hike multiple days and don't want to burn my battery down every day. Will UltraTrack help?
the problem is with the 1 minute interval to record your track. This is a setting that I used to see on the older inReach model for the tracking log. Main problem I had was the gps track is more or less useless if you want to use it for anything useful like contributing the track for mapping purposes.
Considering that a Garmin watch typically will have enough battery life for a normal marathon running (~4-5 hrs of GPS tracking) that's really all you look at for this feature - just extend battery life. Not very exciting honestly hard to find a good use case as opposed to clipping a eTrex 22x to your pack and buying some AA's for a multi-day hike.
I hiked for nearly 2 hours yesterday and not once did my distance change. *shrug*
Did you try turning it off and back on? Also make sure your software is up to date. ;)
@@emilyjohnston1278 well I tried to "save" the hike, at which point it just did the round-and-round circle thing for hours and eventually died overnight, so in a way, yes I turned it off and back on again.
@@leethimm8194 Once you can get it to turn back on, I would try a "hard reset". Press and hold the top left button for about 30 seconds to turn it off. It won't delete data, just forces it off. Same button turns it back on. Up to date SW is also key. You can always plug it into your computer and use Garmin Express to double check all is well. Good luck!
Yeah follow Emily’s advice, sounded like something was wonky as when you start a hiking activity on the watch, it should record and update so at least you would have seen some data before stopping & save
Just hitting the GPS button doesn't get you out.
I hiked today and after finishing the activity on my watch (Instinct 2X Solar) i found out it didn't save any GPS data. I had no map
