  • Hello everyone. Upon revisiting the HiT Series of Thomas and Friends in order to review it later down the road, I've had this episode in the back of my mind for quite some time now. The one episode that I believe takes the overused story formula associated with this era of Thomas and makes it work. Let's take a look at Series 9's debut story, Percy and the Oil Painting.

Contrary to popular belief, Thomas and Friends wasn’t the first show to use the infamous so-called “Three Strikes Formula”
It was actually first used in the Fireman Sam Revival Series Episode “Neighborhood Watch Out”

I remember this episode well from many years ago. Incidentally I always thought the artist was a right pompous twit.
The scene where Percy snaps at the man is quite relatable, since I've had similar experiences where I've lost patience and shouted at someone / something.

Michael Brandon to me did Percy's rant better because he gives Percy a voice that sounds very annoyed at having his time wasted as it builds up.

It feels good whenever this show can break its formulas thanks to talented writers. I really adore how Percy is handled in this story. As the artist stated, he's great for being able to stand up and say his opinions.

I’d also like to point out what a nice subversion the chosen engine for this episode was. It’s not news to any of us that Thomas has always been pushed to front and centre as the books and show got more popular due to marketing from whoever was in charge at the time, something Reverend Awdry was annoyed by if I remember correctly.
Thomas is the main character, Thomas is the face of the brand, Thomas is everywhere, especially as the show goes along. It would be an extremely predictable move for him to be “the spirit of sodor” and for this episode to be about him to serve that marketing goal again.
But it’s not. It’s about Percy. Percy gets to have the spotlight and be in the forefront in this meaningful way. I think that’s extremely clever and again, you can tell a lot of care was put into the writing for this episode.

Another minor detail I enjoy is how they let Percy's Gauge 1 cab open as he leaves Brendam Docks open for the famous artist to hang out. This proves they could have his model work fine with the cab windows open bit for some reason they keep his cabs covered up in S6 up to the end of the model usage in S12.
Dont think they let Percy's cab open for a human to hang out of since that 1 shot in Happy Ever After when he pulls Old Slow Coach out of Tidmouth Hault.

I certainly agree with you on this one. Usually, the HiT era has a lot of episodes (minus some) that used the same old three-strikes formula that only makes the story cliche not to mention that longer runtime not making much a difference. But when worked well, they can be interesting if everyone is in character. Percy & the Oil Painting is a masterpiece of using that formula correctly.
Also, I like that quote "How dare you disrespect my boy", really great here. I always think that the narrator's quote "Gordon thought the artist was very rude" feels Classic Series-esque.

Percy is one of those characters in the HIT Era that unfortunately was mistreated and out of character, but it’s nice that in certain moments in Series 9, along with this introduction episode to the season is just wholesome and feels like the Percy we know in the classic series, god imagine this was an episode in the style of Series 5?

That was awesome! Abi Grant seems to have a thing for Percy considering she also wrote Percy and the left luggage. I consider that another great 3 strikes formula episode because Percy isn't being dumb. He's just putting off a job until later which is something any of us could do. And The race with topham at the end was fun and satisfying ending. It'd be cool if you made a video on that episode one day too if you agree.

There is another great story from Series 11 that stars Thomas called "Thomas and the Storyteller" and that's an episode many fans also consider to be a correct use of the three strikes formula. Thomas is given a job to take a famous storyteller around the island, but ends up having to help James, Percy, and Emily instead. The storyteller having not seen any sights decides to write a story about Thomas. That episode was also written by Abi Grant and a great way to see how far Thomas has come in the final all-model season.

"Calling all engines" and S9 came out when I was born during 2005.
I mostly like Michael Angelis' narration in "Twin Trouble" and "Percy's chocolate crunch".
Brandon does have some great moments of emotion and power in his narrations from S7 to 16.
I honestly want to see the angry side of Percy more often in fanmade content in the future. Just to show that even one the youngest and nicest characters in Thomas can lose their cool sometimes when pushed too their limits.
Something other than (cough x2) "dirty Percy" fashion.

I love the lesson in standing up for what you believe in, but sadly, that doesn't always work out.
Two years back, everyone in my old community belittled my home, so I took a stand. But, when I did, it only made it worse and they said something I'll never forget; they said that the Kingdom of Hawaii was something I made up. And that's what hurt the most. After that they kicked me out.
Because of that I lost the reputation I tried to build over the years, my channel and dream for it had died with it.
I know this has nothing to do with Thomas (though I am a fan), but I just want more people to know what they did.

    • @usualblokeluke
      @usualblokeluke  Рік тому +1

Not everyone will change their minds if you decide to take a stand for yourself and I'm sorry you had to go through that.
      But remember this
You could've easily backed away and continue to let people belittle you, but you didn't. You took that stand to fight for your right to be happy in that community. And while it didn't work out, knowing you were prepared to fight for it, means that you can find that solitude and aspiration in another place.
      Things will get better 🙂

I'm willing to choose Michael Brandon for Percy centric episodes simply because Angelis' Percy voice during the Hit series is insufferable. It's just this loud monotone whine. No wonder he's usually an imbecile in those episodes, a voice like that undermines any other form of personality. Brandon at least channels an offended kid as Percy during his big moment (Thomas and the Statue is another episode in Season 9 where Percy awesomely reads someone the riot act and Brandon once again does it better).

Nitrogen Miller era if only from what videos tell me is they turn up the Dr Seuss rhyming and the repetitive storytelling to a max. You can find more gems here in 2000s hit Thomas than the Nitrogen era

bwba :') in HiT and Nitrogen eras engines behave like engines instead of being chuggington clones
but Nitrogen is worse, more childish, has trashy rhymes and CGI looks bad - no details, cold lightning, fat rails, lots of space between rails, a lot of empty space altogether and a lot of generic empty stretches of rails with additional sidings rendered sometimes
not even talking about fat controller not having his own accent anymore and taking voice acting too seriously so they sound even more cartoonish... HiT era at least has Sodor layout that we had since series 5 with some even older sets while CGI Nitrogen had only some places like brendam docks, knapford, tidmouth sheds and lazily made gordon's hill rendered and a stretch of rails that is repeated over and over again

Did you use uberduck because you were too lazy to sentence-mix or do an impression?

Unpopular opinion: I hate this episode, and I think that there is a total amount of 5 strikes. (I counted them while watching the episode)

That's totally fine if you don't like this episode
I can see factors as to why people would tbh
Feel free to like and dislike by your own choice 😁
