NASA Helicopter Drone Flies on Mars

  • In Febuary 2021, a new Rover by the name of Perseverance landed on Mars, but unlike rovers that have come before it, this one had a very special passenger attached to it, in the form of a helicopter drone, called Ingenuity.
    NASA’s Helicopter drone, is humanity’s first attempt at powered controlled flight of an aircraft, on another planet.
    The helicopter took flight on April 19th 2021, at 12:33 Mars Time, a time and day NASA determined would give optimal energy and flight conditions for the solar powered drone.
    The first test flight involves lifting off, climbing to 10 feet, hovering for about 30 seconds, and then descending.
    Since the time delay from Mission control back on earth to Mars would take too long to manually control the drone, it has to be able to perform each flight all on its own, No joystick, No live pilot, No real-time help, In alien conditions, with almost no atmosphere.
    Thanks for watching.

      It has 2 counter rotating carbon fiber rotors (4 total blades) each rotating at over 2,400 RPM (or 40 rotations per second). I think it goes without saying such a design would be FAR overkill with Earth's atmosphere seeing as most commericial helicopter blades have about a 200-500 RPM on their blades, but that's the level of engineering that was needed to accomplish any sort of flight on Mars.

    Wow 80 million for all of this, still a great success for a first flight but didn’t expect it to spend that much for such a 4lb machine, we got a long way to go possibly Generation’s to have a 298lb helicopter floating about but this is progress it’s a start

    • @WonderWorldYTC
      @WonderWorldYTC  3 роки тому +2

      no, not $80 million for all of this, just the drone was $80 million, the whole mission with Rover cost about $2.9 billion.

    Everyone doesn't need to be "in on it." The people in the control room can legitimately believe they are controlling far-off objects. The public at large will believe information simply because it's on TV.

    Why not use a blimp to survey. A helium filled balloon with a powered propeller

    • @timesillusion2340
      @timesillusion2340 2 роки тому +1

      For a number of reasons Helium balloons would not work on Mars. Instead you'd either have to use a Hot Air Baloon style design using the Sun to heat the inside instead of any external mechanism, or create a Vaccuum Balloon who's filled with nothing at all, just a vaccum. Either of those should be able to float in Mar's atmosphere and are both being looked into and considered.

    • @jimberglund6979
      @jimberglund6979 3 роки тому +5

      The short answer to your question is that there is enough air to fly a drone, or use a parachute, and no serious source argues against that. The argument that NASA is lying about flying a drone on Mars because "it's impossible in that thin atmosphere" is baffling to me since it literally requires an assumption that NASA is telling the truth as they're the primary source of information about Mars' atmosphere to begin with. It's mind boggling how that sort of brain can function so smugly with such a contradiction floating around.
