I ony have a few comments to make: First, I know you said multiple times, but the tires really set the limits for this truck. Second this is different than the TRDs, it is something that put reliability and simplicity before off road performance. And finally, outside a few special markets like the USA, Australia and parts of the Middle East, off-roading, as a hobby is very rare due, mainly to cost. So this truck, even tough parades itself as a sporty truck, acts more as a lifestyle truck for its buyers. It hasn´t been developed enough to really compete with the Ranger Raptor. It won´t go as far, and it won´t be as confortable; but it´ll bring you back. And it still keeps the best of Toyotas: Reliability, simplicity, and resell value

In Australia we use the Hilux as a work vehicle, we don't use it as a fulltime offroad vehicle.'
Hilux is about range, its a diesel, so we update the fuel tank with a long range tank and that can get us 1000 plus kilometers with great economy.
We use it to traverse Australia, we don't use petrol or gas trucks for long range driving.

The roads of Iceland are littered with both, as each are common rentals. I was just there in a Duster. It's a bit crap to drive, but honest, practical, and returned 45 mpg US. Such a great little rig for muddy lanes and Icelandic sheep transport.

That's literally every other youtube channel that covers trucks at all. I like that this channel takes the time to show how power is distributed in various modern AWD and 4x4 systems. That one video where he shows Subaru's awd system actually does what's advertised on the box where Ford's just does nothing at all until the locking diff is engaged was an eye opener.

You touched on the two key points: outside of the US, off-roading for leisure is not as popular and the owner of this type of vehicle typically seeks reliability / durability / economy over outright capability. Pickup ownership as a personal vehicle is not really wide spread for many reasons, including the fact that this is not a very practical vehicle to daily drive given price, size and fuel economy. Offroad enthusiasts certainly exist, but they are out in a modified vehicle that cost the equivalent of $650 - $6,500, not $65,000. Australia is different in this aspect. Arab world is different and wild...

That is a real generalisation…Here in South Africa you cannot drive 1km without passing numerous Double cab 4x4s and.SUVs ,all brand new and kitted…(not $650 - 6500)Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux,VW Amarok , Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi Triton and all the new Chinese offerings too…OffRoading for leisure is hugely popular….that is why so many brands like AluCab ,Smartcap and FrontRunner (to name a few) come from South Africa…
This is also a great place to test a Jimny…we recently had a Jimny Gathering of 800…
Oh and we use those 4x4 s as daily drivers….the best selling vehicle overall is the Hilux with the Ranger in 2nd place…in terms of double cabs , Ranger sells the most…

Interesting. Your adventure to the UK to try out something we hoped would stack up to the reputation that it has was a flop. I was as excited about your opportunity as you were. I was prepared to ask, how much would it cost to ship one here? BUT, at those prices and the poor performance(tires beside the point)what you got here seems like a watered down version of what they offer us in the USA. Def. gives people perspective now. And yah, I think it would be fun for you to find other vehicles we do not have here in the USA and see if the hype matches the actual performance. Such as the Jimny. Thanks Ryan! Great camera work and editing.

Always found it interesting how so many tacoma owners drooled over this truck not considering it was a much more stripped down version of the Tacoma with heavier duty springs.
The hilux was designed to be a mule, the Taco was meant to be an adventure vehicle.

It will climb the motorcycle track with just Atrac. It works better than just the rear locker most of the time. Given that your tyre pressures are lowered appropriately for the kind of terrain you want to tackle. Although, all terrains will improve capability by a mile…

That is the old GR Sport 1, not the new UK version of the GR Sport 2.... I have just checked the DVLA database for the vehicle registration, and despite what he says that is the 2.4D engine, not the 2.8D... what is going on here?? Then.. 'of course I'm in England, this is a right hand drive truck..' YOU'RE IN WALES MATE!'

Would love to see a Jimny review. Drove one in Iceland earlier this year (manual trans, 15hrs of driving total). Love it! But at 6'2 I am way too tall and had serious cramping in my foot after all that. Plus, the reciprocating ball steering vagueness is a bit sketchy on icy Icelandic roads. Regardless.... Id still buy it if they sold it here.

Here in Europe, we don't have big roads like the US or big parking spaces**;** everything is narrow here. Owning a Raptor in Europe would be a headache. The Hilux is the best because of its simplicity, as you mentioned. You don't need fancy systems to go off-road all you need is locks and installing an ARB, for example, lock in the front this car goes literally everywhere.

You can buy the arch extensions from toyota (full set) for £350 lol😅 and best bit is they where fitted on trucks in Ireland years before the GR Sport used them lol 😂 toyota love screwing over the UK.

I feel like there is a market for this in the US. Not everyone wants all the touch screen, push button offroad do-dads. It is more capable I think than you give it credit for. With better tires, it would be able to do most of what anyone needs it to do. Pricepoints for the tacoma and others in the US market are just too damn high. This would be great for anyone who wants a "no BS", 4x4 like we used to get, way back when.

Youve tested a stock Hilux on road tyres and are surprised it couldn't go far off road.... Come to the Scottish Highlands. Loads of places to properly off road here. I have an old Hilux. No assists, just levers, a diesel engine and some BFG KO2s. Goes anywhere. Everything works.
The tyres in the version you had here arent A/Ts as you alluded to. They're highway tyres and no use for wet grass.
