Heaven, hell... Eyes of the beholder. Perhaps in this world of dead cities with shattered mechanica, a place where there is no menace of beasts is a better place, in their eyes. Food, water, shelter, safety... Well, what more could be asked? To the caged bird, where they are fed and watered, kept and cared for... The outside would be a rather terrible place, no?
well .. it's the socialist utpia waiting for gullible people (or any other utopia .. but right now there's nothing in the current social or media environment which is even close to it being tryed [again])
I am thinking that the culling is necessary to autodale's survival. It may well be that too many people may actually destroy it, simply by existing. The world may actually be physically threatened by free thought, to the extent where too vivid a dream or too much imagination may manifest physical threats out of the air. Even gravity seems to be failing beyond the city limits - the world is in a metaphysically threatened state.
My theory is that he was a "freak" the entire time, but viewed himself as human. He awoke outside a destroyed city having no memories of his life prior to waking up, just making assumptions. He seems to be at peace with everything around him, including the other freaks, who, by the way he describes them, seem very at peace themselves, just traveling and surviving. At the end when the other freak approached him, it was calm and peaceful towards him, were all the books he read told him that the freaks are very aggressive. All this would explain the last seen where the children see a freak approach them wearing the MC's white scarf. I dont think that it is figurative, but the wasteland beyond the walls transforms people into the freaks. In a world with giant hive minded beings ruling cities, i don't think its a very far off theory. If you watch "Friendly Shadow" you will learn that these freaks can also draw and make beds for themselves, and know how to start fires(candles). So possibly those that venture into the wilderness become these freaks but retain parts of their humanity. The one that showed the MC the direction to autodale was carrying what i believe to be its own mask from when it had once been human.
I think your on to something, but I think it's more figurative. I don't think the freaks are actually monsters, I think it's about how they are veiwed. For example, the guy we see in this video is a human, and he veiws the other freaks as monsters, they are unknown to him. When he enters the town the children dont know and understand him so they see him as a freak, or a monster.
@@dn2k718 No. The Freaks are other wanderers but he doesn't understand them so he sees them as Freaks. The Freak at the end is the Wanderer, we can tell by the scarf, he is seen as a Freak by those who live in Autodale, he is an outsider, a freak.
I feel like all the people who left the “paradise” were seen as the freaks because of the freak that was holding the mask and how the wanderer went to the kids as a freak
"Don't feed the freaks" the citizens gave food and shelter to the outsiders, the outsiders unbalanced everything, triggering the rebellion. These ruined cities with giant alien women, invaders? Farming humanity for the exceptional ones with enough imagination to help the machines progress. It's a breeding program, they kill off the parents when the children are old enough to start the next generation. Survivors from ruined cities will even see each other as freaks. I just had a surge of hope seeing the Glamorous city in ruins, they can do it, they can break free.
@Daniel Hawkins he IS the freak. freak is just a term used to describe someone who isn't the same as them. it's based on his perspective. so to the people at autodale he's a freak, just like he saw the people of Town as freaks too just because they weren't the same as him.
Daniel Hawkins my theory is that outside is horribly irradiated and he sees himself as what he was but he is a freak on the outside and that is why the freaks don’t attack him immediately but if he poses a threat they will attack him even though he’s a freak as well.
Freaks love to collect trinkets, it would appear. Masks and bandages, for example. It wouldn’t be far off that a scarf would be something to collect. Perhaps he was killed, or offered it to a freak to stay safe, since it would appear they don’t attack unprovoked, and the traveler can avoid getting killed by them. Perhaps he died of natural means? Who knows?
So, do you think they are humans or not? Or those robots create the illusions around them to make anyone thats not from their city look like a monster?
assgore I’m not sure to be honest. I just know it can’t be what they actually are. I’m willing to believe that it is a tangible allusion created by something the robots do. Or something the giant human every town has is doing. I think the giant people are a hive-mind center that might have some control over people to make them complacent. The “exceptional” people we see in another episode are those that can’t be controlled by the mother mind. So TLDR, I think the mother mind is creating the allusion that people not from your town, or people who have escaped, are “Freaks”
What if those masks they wear somehow alters the reality of the wears perspective creating the illusion of a freak. When they see some who's "pretty", they see them as a normal person. But when they see an ugly person, they see them as a freak. That can also explain why this society goes and kills them, because they think that just because they are freaks/monsters, they must be tossed away and forgot about.
@@fiddelman7802 Thank you finally someone is speaking out about this!! That is what I was thinking too. This might be the only logical & plausible theory that actually goes along with the show's storyline. Props to you man! 😁😁👏👏
Well, it fits with the reveals in Immortal Machines and the Making Of. In the Merry Madness world monsters didn't see themselves as "scary monsters" The Rat was a chill dude in love with some sort of demon-thing and claiming she did love him back, a friend of all people sharing stories with kids of every race. He knew he was different, but he didn't see himself as a monster, and longed for a time where "Every creature lived in Merry Madness". When the Withering caused the Sickness humanity started to die. Humans killed every monster blaming them, science turned against magic and they kept ridding of the "freaks" to stave of the Sickness but it didn't happen. While Autodale managed to keep humans alive by feeding the Uglies to the Matriarch, the rest of the world somehow started healing itself. But it didn't start with humanity, the World brought back the Freaks, the monsters, the weird and the unbridled mystery. The Mayor literally blew a gasket: he was no more the Saviour of Life, the one conquering the Sickness and keeping Earth and the Humanity alive. He was just a rotten, decrepit relic trying to keep humanity alive in a World that couldn't care less of humanity and saved/remade/made the Freaks to inherit a renewing Earth. Hence, he pushed into the humans of Autodale a deep xenophobia: the Freaks were the living proof he should just have let nature do its thing, die forgotten and forsaken and spare the Matriarch, the Uglies and himself their fate. But also, they were something to hate because, like the Merry Madness era humanity, they were thriving and humans were dying and it wasn't fair to him. He became a wreck and asked the second opinion of the Exceptional Girl. From "The Friendly Shadow" we know HIVE is enamored with the Major's accomplishment and shares his hathred of the freaks
That "Freak" that pointed him to autodale could well be a curious child taking a risk going up to what they view as a freak. Perspective is a crazy thing.
Or he knew people see him was a freak but wait the kid with the scarf he sees the other kids in autodale was humans that's means oh I'm so confused now we really need answers
i am most intetested in how the scenery in the bit with the last dead person he finds before reaching autodale is inverted. gravity is inverted. do you think this is supposed to throw us off a bit and make us feel as unfamiliar with the setting as he feels? or is it something more literal than that?
Maybe they're building themselves? The others were almost finished and maybe they're all going to join together to rule the world? that's just my theory
For those of you returning after Immortal Machine- I’m pretty sure the freaks are the result of the disease around the world, and that’s what infected humans turn into
@@samuelweller4530 i am starting to think this takes place after friendly shadow. The freak pointing the way to autodale i think could be the child freak. I think the girl died and it carries around the mask as a reminder of her. Also we see a bit from a dead persons diary and the picture of the girl giving a freak cake only makes sense if it was the girls diary, who else would have that memory but her?
The “monsters” aren’t literal, they’re human just like the boy narrating the video. At the end, we see a monster with the same exact scarf the boy wears. We see them as monsters though, which is trippy, because everyone else sees them as monsters too, or “freaks”. Humans are what killed their own town and were so violent.
Wow, your mind is remarkably beautiful and insanely filled-to-the-brim with intelligence. Please never let this incredible trait go to waste. Use it! Use it any, and every, which way you possibly can - whenever, and wherever, you go. I hope you take this serious because I am so serious when I say this.
@@safinhh8312 Thank you! That was very sweet of you to say! I am as kind as most people deserve. I give respect to everyone and genuinely love people.. but being antisocial asf, I also hate them. Lol. But it's not that kind of hate.
INailedIt I’m pretty sure he is. At the start there is that robot over lord lady leaning over him. He walks around the dilapidated city. I literally see no reasoning to your claim
There must have been other towns where they used to follow the same rituals as autodale. Also if you listen to what he says he mentions that the town he is from has a name that starts with a t
What you take from all the autodale videos is that autodale is a sort of perfect soceity one that doesn’t fail. The fact that the character is a freak and doesn’t come from the named autodale implies the Town he came from didn’t function in the same way.
I watched this after seeing Friendly Shadow and now everything makes a lot more sense, it seems autodale is just another repeat of something thats happened everywhere else on the planet already, humans attempting to build mechanical gods but then everything goes wrong, and everyone dies. HIVE is just another one of these mechanical gods, doomed to failure one day when she finishes that giant body in the tower and tries to activate it, somehow, its going to kill her and everyone else in autodale, just another failure.
Hive isn't a mechanical god; they're an amalgamation of Exceptional minds, people who figured out the truth of Autodale and brought into the fold so that they can find another way. It isn't about 'building' the body of the Matriarch or activating her - it is about keeping her alive, so that she, in turn, keeps the people of Autodale alive.
There’s a lot of lore behind this film thought. The other matriarchs you see are attempts of other people to build their own cities, but those matriarchs tried to scape, some going far away, other not ending up moving at all, they all are seen dead, dead in sufferment as the changes made to their bodies made them dependent of the civilization around them. The freaks are only the transformation of other humans after the worlds sickness passed away, as the theory of them being other people or human beings is quite invalid as in this film we can see the traveler tripping alongside the way of a freak, and freaks are bigger and stronger feral creatures. So them being a mutated human or alive being itself is more trustable than other theories about them. And the humanity cannot live without the matriarchs as the matriarchs cannot live with the humanity’s technology, since the matriarchs keep them from turning into freaks, and the humans keep the matriarchs from diying. As we seen in the film “inmortal machine” the matriarchs can cure the disease that keeps turning humans into freaks. Edit: also when typing this I realized the traveler only camps around matriarchs since their presence keeps him from turning into a freak.
I think freaks are people who don't live in Autodale. Everything our protagonist knows is based on the stories of those who have left Autodale, so ultimately he ends up perceiving things from their perspective. They obviously left Autodale because of all the horrors we have seen before, but it seems that if they *did* write them down the protagonist didn't understand. He only saw the propaganda and thought of Autodale as a paradise. But through all of this he doesn't understand that the "freaks" are not only the creatures he sees, but himself as well, from the Autodale perspective. He is outside of the society, therefore a freak. In the very last shot we see him arrive in Autodale, but the children see him as anyone else from the outside; a freak.
We wouldn’t see human skeletons then. All the bones would be the bones of freaks because he doesn’t know how else to look at them. I think that the Freaks are aliens of some sort who wiped out almost all of humanity and are attracted to emotions like confusion or sympathy. With the uglies being minority groups they would have sympathy for the freaks and how they are cast out. So, auto dale fixes this by demonizing the freaks and killing the uglies so that the freaks won’t be attracted to the town of autodale. Edit: so I didn’t realize the freak at the end was actually wearing the scarf so your theory makes a little more sense but what if the freaks are mutated humans. He says himself that he doesn’t remember town and that everything happened when he was young so seeing the bones of humans he assumed he was one of them. That might also explain why the Matriarch is reaching out at him. Trying to kill him before he can kill anyone else? Also this raises the question of what are the Matriarchs? What’s their purpose?
... Perhaps.. The Matriarchs were originally meant to protect and refine humanity. But the freaks are mutated humans. The ones who got away from the slaughter pits and the patrols. The ones who no longer fit Society's molds.
There's a second woman, so I'm wondering if that means maybe the "freaks" were people from past autodale cities, and that's why the protagonist can't remember anything, maybe they turned into these things upon the destruction of their city... or death?
That’s the beautiful irony of it. Imagine if this was the first autodale video you saw. From the sounds of it, you’d believe him, you’d agree with him. He doesn’t know the truth, and that’s the terrifying thing about perfect societies. Outside they seem amazing, but everything comes with a price
This makes sooo much more sense now that immortal engine has been released. Don't read more if you don't want spoilers. The people going away from autodale are probably people who tried to escape when they realised that the society they lived in relied on sacrificing humans. Also the freaks are the people from Town, due to the illness which wipes out humanity.
This one was a real passion project. I honestly think it's my best film yet! It totally re-sparked my love for filmmaking and I really hope you all enjoy it! ^_^ Making-of is here!: ua-cam.com/video/h1eXGVJ1mhc/v-deo.html
I love this series you made. From the lore, and I really enjoyed seeing the freaks, and being able to see from the eyes of someone who wasn't controlled by robots. Great Job, and keep up the good work, also, is it only you who makes these? If so, you are very talented.
Tbh the concept of the Freaks actually being human but are just percieved as weird-looking monsters by the people makes perfect sense going by the traveler's descriptions at 2:49 onwards; *"I think they had something to do with capital "T" Town... maybe all towns"* - they were people who lived there and got away when the towns fell - *"they're the only living things I ever see out here"* - fellow scavenging humans making do with what they find just like the traveler - *"Some are alone, others stick together"* - some people prefer to live by themselves while others gather with friends/lovers to survive together (most animals either all live alone or all live in groups i.e. wolves, great white sharks etc, with humans being a major exception) - *"migrating to who-knows-where"* - like the traveler, those people are seeking out places to live too - *"Most just sit and watch from a distance"* - humans are known to be observers and nervous about things that are new/not yet understood - *"Some follow until they just stop"* - People who've settled in a general area and aren't willing to venture beyond the land they know - *"But others... others don't seem to see me at all"* - people who are surviving in the wilds may not care or be interested in another human they cross paths with in their own struggle to survive - *"Eventually... inevitably... one will get curious... and close"* - we as a species are also known for our curiosity, which can be a good and bad thing - *"they can be extremely violent if you don't behave."* - literally every war, crime, atrocity and sin throughout all human history - *"sometimes I get the feeling they're as homeless as I am"* - you bet they are, buddy.
I would love your theory, except this loner character would not have been brainwashed by the Autodale proaganda. I think they represent the necessary chaos as the antidote to the hyper-orderly Autodale. Like nature’s prescription.
@@teeheeteeheeish I feel like all the towns, as well as Autodale function the same way. He wouldn't be brainwashed by Autodale necessarily but by the propaganda his own town fed into him, hence him talking about how everyone in the city is "Pretty " but overall these are great comments and I feelnlike good conversations to come haha
0:43 I don't know but this scene feels very uncanny. The goddess screaming in pain in their last moments makes me feel an emotion I've never felt before. It also feels reminiscent of the works of the artist Simon Stålenhag
But I bet money that UA-cam will be like ORIGINAL NON FAMILY FRIENDLY CONTENT YOU SHALL NOT HAVE ADS no matter the quality ( in this case beyond very high)
Some animals are different from others literally in friendly shadow he gets attacked by one anyway until people can consider something passive enough or can't kill someone I wouldn't reccomend going into contact with the creature
Freaks are people that aren't understood. Our traveler doesn't know these people in the outside, so they're freaks to him. The people in Autodale don't know him, so he's a freak to them.
@@MC-mj5wt Apparently ugly and different are two different things in this series, someone can become ugly but you can't become different, you are different from the start. That's what I think at least.
Did anyone else catch at 5:34 where the Freak's large claw went in front of the black space, almost like it was breaking the 4th wall? Idk why but that gave me a bit of a spook.
Woah, ok, a lot to unravel here. I could write pages analysing this video, but the most important part to me is in the final 5.35 moment. The traveler wears a white scarf throughout the short. The scarf is constantly moving and flowing through the wind, but at 5.35 a freak enters Autodale. A freak with a white scarf flowing through the wind. Could this be our traveler? I can understand this in two ways: 1. The traveler is actually a freak who read books and believes to be a human. Or 2. Since the traveler is new, different to Autodale, since he wasn't raised with brainwashing, he's neither pretty or ugly. To the people living there, he is a freak
There could also be a chance a Freak found the deceased man, took his scarf and book, and decided to use it to find his way to Autodale That or a Freak followed him into Autodale
What's odd is the fact is that they have their masks still. It really shows how crazy people will stick to their cause even when their organization has fallen. It's scary.
I see people all the time wearing masks in their car alone...This short is so prophetic and ironic that it was created before the flu season manipulations by the Representatives that only want to protect us from the ugly. LOL
Their not crazy, its hard to explain but, the citizens just live their life in a way that to us may seem incredibly awful and unethical but, if they looked at our world they'd see it as just as awful, terrifying, monstrous, its all about perspective
“I don’t sleep anymore” He says this right after the encounter with the freak after it cut him not to mention he wakes up and the scar is already almost gone which to me means one of two things 1.he became a freak and now has regeneration abilities 2.there was a time skip
It could be because the freaks are just seen as outsiders to Autodale. Remember, the guy heard stories that were highly biased in Autodale’s favour, which I assume actually brainwashes him (though not to the extent of the people of Autodale.) thus, he sees those who rejects this “utopia” and lives outside of it as “freaks.” Meaning that these monsters might not be literal, and the cut might not even exist. It could be from brainwashing from the books that make him assume that everything about a freak is dangerous. This theory is based off the fact in the end, there’s a freak with a scarf, similar to the protagonist, indicating that freaks are likely just seen as outsiders from the eyes of the brainwashed.
He says that because all the dead people he sees are running away from Autodale when he finds them, which shouldn't be the case, since it's supposed to be perfect, not scary
Answer to the last sentence: "Because it's not paradise, its the entrance to hell. For there is no salvation no safety, but only awaiting the moment when you become ugly. When you become trash. When you're corpse will fill the hole with others. Because thats the assured ending to the story, the story of the city filled pretty people.
There was grafiti all over Town: 0:48 "ERASE" 0:53 "Don't FEED the FREAKS" 3:06 " The FALLEN KINGDOMS OF DEAD GODS" "Don't FLOAT!" " They _____ _______ ______" *note i am only writing what was not said in the video* Also in the journals (from what I can make out) say 2:06 "The masks are unique to Autodale" "The closer I ...... the most by....... depicts some..... tower. I'm.......where the ....Titain's Legs... Perhaps ____ alive!" " All of the ___(towns?) I've ________ _____ of _____ ____ damage of the Towers ___ ______ ____ _____ ____ _____" 2:10 " A lot of the pieces depict children. Childhood toys, television ____ and general _____ and ____. Seems like an incredible place to grow up." "THE TOWER I've found so many of these drawings. Is it just because of the ____(maybe "towns")? It seems the villagers ("villains"??) are obsessed with the Tower" The writer also infers that the masks are status symbols, or perhaps something to do with happiness or harmony. 2:12 "This image(the robots) is everywhere. The bots I remember were just for security." 2:17 you probably read this one but whatever " I was never Pretty. I didn't belong" " I miss dad. I miss Autodale" " Who drew this? Who wrote this?" 3:03 "the fallen kingdom of the gods" "DON'T FLOAT" "they will watch from above"-"will watch from above " courtesy of @jiarae yew 3:32 " This is a page from a childrens book I found. Turns out the freaks REALLY ARE everywhere" " Freaks, Monsters, Strangers, Outsiders, they're all the same. Autodale refers to them as "Monsters". Town called them "Freaks" . There big, scary, and unpredictable. I've tried so desperately..." "I want to understand them but I can't" "A child's drawing of (freaks)..." 3:35 "Give them what they want, stay calm and behave. The first hurt me worse than the second. The second didn't even take anything. It just pushed me down and roared at me. I _____ it and it left me." 3:37 "Sympathy? Empathy? Monsters???" I don't know who ____ this but it makes me think of something I've considered for a while. The Freaks are monsters and they're extremely dangerous, but I can't help but empathize with them. Maybe because they're the only other living things I have encountered." Make what you can of it!
Yeah even if they look ugly and scary doesn't mean they are violent they are like misunderstood like normal animal. People treat them think they gonna kill them but they have to understand that they treat them like the "ugly" if you know what im saying
So two theories The more realistic one for this story; everyone views outsiders who don't wear masks as freaks (outsiders are usually viewed as beasts) A fun one though; is that the narrator is a freak and that they are a species of their own; he just fell in love with humanity and believed himself to be one
The second theory would explain why he has no memories that make sense for a human, and why he has never met any. It also would explain how he's survived for so long
Everyone talking about the Freaks, but honestly I’m more interested in the “Giants” (0:18, 0:44, 4:50). I have so many questions. What are they? Are they or were they ever human? Is the one in Autodale the last one? What happened to the others? What do they want? What is their nature? Why do they all seem in pain? Why do some look like they were trying to escape from something? If they’re not from Earth, where did they come from? If they’re from Earth, what were they created for?
Finally! Another person who wants to know. As far as I know, they are called the Matriarchs and are powered by the minds of the exceptional. But I dont know what they really are.
Maybe they are failed attempts to creating the “perfect world”. Possibly the Matriarchs snapped out of it in a sense and the robots had to recreate what is Autodale. I legit barely started watching this so my mind is fucking flooded with how wonderfully creepy this is.
It makes me think that there were failed Autodales. Those matriarchs are from past "perfect towns" like Autodale that just didn't work out. I can't imagine why else there's so much death and destruction with all the dead robots and people. The freaks are literally just outsiders who can't fit in because they're different.
I don't hate you. I think you're just... misunderstood. You don't seem mean. Or scary. Or evil. You aren't even all that ugly. You really seem more.... Sad. Or lonely. You helped me find food, and shelter, and Pieces. You help me get un-lost. You help me get "found." Why do people cast you out? What happened?
he means conscious living things that can give a crap about him, beings that can look at him, react to him more than "oh god I'm being stepped on!!!" in pheromones
I like how they emphasize the violence by only making the blood in color and everything else is in black-and-white. Very unique concept and one that works very well at that!
“They may have killed everything and everyone I knew, but I don’t hate them”. If the freaks are humans and he is a freak himself, this line makes so much more sense. If the people caused this disaster and turned others into freaks, then of course, instinctively, he wouldn’t hate them. Humans may have and probably will in our future, destroy everything we know, but we can’t bring ourselves to truly hate humanity because we are it. This is a true masterpiece! Please continue making more in the future!
I get the feeling the scarf is actually around its neck, and the freak is the narrator. just a theory though, but I dont appear to be alone if one reads the comment from Northflower
Same but what if he's dead or thinks he's human but what he calls a freak witch is why they're all skididish and violent but could have been attacked and killed by a freak
The ending shows him appearing as a freak to the children of autodale... what are the freaks but those who are the outcasts from society. And to those who are in society freaks are those who don't belong. Not always bad Not always good But always misunderstood.
Well,@@Oneiros0629 , there are many reasons people may leave a location. A lack of resources, or a hazardous environment. Examples of a hazardous environment include: war or civil unrest, crime, robotic uprising, discrimination, or dictatorship. In this case, they might have left because they got a better job opportunity across the state.
I think he thinks he's a human but he's just like the others a "freak" But everybody seems to focus on the guy. But nobody focuses on the saying " Don't feed the freaks. What happens when you feed them?
I think its just to show us, the watchers, how the freaks (people who arent like them/not from Autodale) are seen as dangerous and undeserving of any generosity or human kindness
If you feed them, you become sympathetic, most of this society is very anti feelings, just do what your supposed to do. If you “feed the monsters” you’re showing that you care for something other than functioning in Autodale. You become a label under the society but just human when you show it in this world.
I see it as ”Don’t help the freaks” or ” Don't sympathise with the freaks” this is to divorce the idea of humanity from these freaks. To these people, freaks are dangerous animals that should not be helped. The rule is there to make sure no one feeds or sympathies with the freaks.
The top comment asks for a sequel to this but I want a prequel. Like what caused Town to fall into such disrepair? What caused everyone to either die or escape?
Larry O'Gardener Ya also why are there floating skeletons and why are the matriarch robots seeming to try to escape as well(my theory is that it is because she is powered by the exceptional who knew the society was bad)
watching "friendly shadow" first and then this has made the freaks to much more interesting. I think this is my favourite short in the series to be honest
When you watched behind the scenes videos and you’re able to understand more of the story with the monsters and the giant penis tower . Btw the commenter watching by : Go watch all of em cuz they are so good.
New theory based on the latest animation: Friendly Shadow so if you haven’t seen that spoiler warning. The freaks are mutated humans, from fall out after the human uprising in Town. The scarf man himself is a mutated freak, but his trauma and denial make him believe he still looks human. The freaks merely see him as one of their own, because he is. He’s the only one who sees himself as still human. The humans in Autodale are taught that the freaks are bad because they look different, when in reality they look monstrous due to their rebelling, and it’s the free thought and will that the robots truly hate. In Friendly Shadow the girl leaves Autodale and yet she stays human looking. Could be she turns monstrous later, but maybe she’s still actually human and not mutated like the Freaks because she escaped without getting mutated from, perhaps a noxious gas/blood from the deity like beings that run every town? The ones seeming to cry out in agony all around scarf man’s Town. Some freaks still try to deny their appearance, like scarf man, and hold onto keepsakes from their past. The mutation allows freaks to live out in the wild, unlike unmutated humans, which is why he’s gotten farther than any of the people whose books he finds.
Thats a good theory. Remember the part where he says he doesnt sleep anymore near the end? Its likely that the mutations altered his sleeping cycle so he just needs shorter rests rather than sleeping. The reason he slept at all was probably his own delusion into thinking he needed to sleep, but as the doubts grew, he mind was slowly adjusting the reality of its new form.
Okay, so a man, let's call him Adam. Adam's collecting pieces of a puzzle to Glamorous, or to him "Town." The place he was possibly born, raised, and ventured away from so many possible years ago. He had been collecting books on the "Freaks" and hoarding the masks from another town called Autodale, looting them from only bones. The trail Adam walks, he encounters large, behemoth mechanical looked humanoids, and even shows another mechanical being strangling two people until it had lost all power. The city of Glamorous had one in the middle with a house stating it was the, "The fallen kingdom of Dead Gods." The machines being god's among man. A failed town, a failed government and a failed Autodale, as the rest were, as all are to become. Raiders scavenging for food, killing who they need or want for personal gain. The masks hide beauty, hide hideous, make everyone on the same level, everyone looks the same after all. It is only when someone takes off their mask are they a freak, an outcast, driven away from the city because they don't want to be restrained by the shackles that the government nailed to the ground. Each Freak is a person without a mask, or that had taken it off, just like Adam is. Trying to find a corrupt paradise that he knows to little about to understand it's true nature. To everyone else, he is a freak, but from what his blind eyes also see are the monsters with a goats head, razor claws, a split tail, and lengthy have hanging antennae. Adam has been confused on why other were moving away from the town, and soon he will know why, he doesn't belong there to the government, he is a monster, a loner, a freak in their eyes. Though, it begs the question... Were they all monsters to begin with? A freak is a human, though transformed due to their lack of restraint, showing the reality of what a human is, a beast, a wolf in sheep's clothing, violent in nature. He was a Freak himself the entire time, wanting to rejoin society and shed the insanity that looms over his mind. There was nothing between the town, and nothing can get weird. Isolation brings one to imagine impossibly realistic images, and show someone's true nature, if they are a Freak, or a Mask.
i think... i agree with u. but david's latest videos kinda say that the freaks are actually monsters... and not humans? IDK but your theory is rlly good :D
That sounds better than my idea! But I was thinking that there were people outside the towns that survived and didn't see others as freaks, but the people in the cities were brainwashed to see everyone not from their town as a freak.
Narednik Đubo, I think some travel in packs because they seek companionship of any kind. Think of it as a human and a dog, they all see each other as the dog.
No because Autodale is most likely the "perfected" model of these "towns" so long as the "Freaks" are kept out and the "Exceptional" are taken to teach the Matriarch how to combat "Ugliness" there is nobody to topple Autodale.
@@darkacademiavanessa True, but a society can still completely collapse in ways other than revolution which is what the ruins of all the other towns imply.
“Sounds like a paradise,” Yeah, compared to the outside. It is, at least as close to a paradise you’d get in this hellscape. And it’s not perfect, far from it. But everyone is happy, save for a select few. They have kids. They have good meals, and they even agree with its policies. Kids have friends, and grow up to continue their family legacy. And they love it. It gives them purpose. Their lack of individuality is a point of pride for them. Is it really a dystopia if everyone buys into to the lies, and everyone really, truly believe this is their best life? That even those most wronged by the system believe?
Well, it's pretty much established the Withering caused the Sickness. And the Sickness mostly wiped away the whole human race save for the (un)lucky ones able to replicate the Mayor's experiments and enslave a Monarch. And in the end, just Autodale managed to survive and the Freak saw every other city with the Monarch dead and the city prey to the Sickness. The Freaks and the outside world are pretty much the only alive things able to thrive without enslaving the Matriarch, humans are proud to be alive, and kept, and fed because when the HIVE Propaganda tells them that Autodale is safe, protected and their only home she's not lying. Without Autodale, humanity would have perished long ago and the Freaks would have inherited everything
Its kind of sad if you think about it. He used to live in a town too. With people and television. But than something happened. A war maybe. Then he journied out determined to find the city of "AutoDale" or Paridise as he calls it. Reading more and more of the journals he starts seeing escapers or outsiders as freaks. The mind can do wonderous things. But it can also change on how you see the way you see things. He finally finds AutoDale not knowing that he too is an outsider or in this case a refugee. He is a freak. He wasn't born in AutoDale so he can't stay.
Hay the masked or masked skels thats from a diffrent animtion (sorry i suck at spelling lol) and the statues he sleeps under was a dictater and it was like happy few the core might have expolded. sorry if this dosen't make sense...
Yeah it doesn't make sense. When did I state masks or masked skulls? They are part of this story though. If you think its from "Being Pretty" or "No Monsters" its because they are. This is set in the same universe as them. The statue you talk of is not called a dictator its called a matriarch. Its not even a statue it's a cyborg sex-bot thing. And for the core, what do you mean. What core? Do you mean the giant penis tower? There is no core.
It's possible, in a sense, but the 'Friendly Shadow' short establishes that the Freaks are not human in appearance, either. They have a distinctly different appearance.
This is actually my first time watching this video and I really didn’t see all the other one to give a better explanation on all the graffiti but so far what I got from this is that in the beginning he says that he really don’t remember what happen in the city because he was young so I feel that the freaks and also himself are people who are not program and we’re people who want out. That why he kinda wasn’t as afraid of them but because of him not remembering anything when he got to the place where the kids were he was view as a freak just my opinion I don’t know much😂🤦🏾♂️
There's so much to look at in this. 0:19 that leader thing, much like the one seen leading Autodale, is crawling away from the city in the background. Like it's trying to escape, and where it lays dead now you can see anguish in her face (they feel things?). 0:47 again with one of the leaders frozen with an expression of pain. 1:38, these scenes are neat. No idea what they mean, but it's got creatures from nature (one of James Armsby's interests). 1:47 the mask is the same as the sculpture of a Handy Man's head seen in other videos. 3:03, a peculiar scene. "Don't Float," referencing the earlier scene with the bodies floating in the air? What could it possibly mean... Fallen gods? I assume it's referring to the leaders of these towns. 3:36, a bit of backstory on our main character. He only encountered Freaks twice. The second the creature just pushed him down and roared at him. In comparison to how the later one pointed in the direction of the town, it's as if the Handymen have done something to them. Perhaps removed their civilisation (why they seem to be homeless). But also intelligent, some are against him (the one that roared), but the second is more curious (I'll talk about that later). 3:40, playing off my thought that Freaks were pushed out by people. This scene shows a person giving one cake. It's almost like Freaks were segregated from the rest of society. Forced out, like in American history with people of different ethnicity in a way (makes sense with James' other American inspiration). Until these Freaks eventually revolted perhaps? 4:17, why is this freak carrying a mask? After seeing the other masks our main character has he points him in the direction of Autodale. My guess? This Freak misses 'home' (these towns). It's as if it carries around the mask as a reminder of the past (quite sad). 5:20. Why would they leave? A poignant line for sure. I think this Freak that carried the mask misses the town, a foil to our main character that also wants to go back to these towns. 5:34, is it here to hurt the kids? I doubt it. Also, looks like the same kids from previous shorts. Same toys. ANYWAY! That's my quick, spur of the moment analysis, maybe I'll make a video on it on my actual channel one day. Will people see this comment? Perhaps, maybe, just maybe. Would love to get your thoughts! Honestly, this animations and there making of's are a massive inspiration to me and my work on a game. Seeing them motivates me to keep writing. So thank you James Armsby, thank you.
Redgear17, in another comment. Comments on how "how the freak at the end wears a white scarf, Do other people see him as a freak. Dose he see others as freaks." A really good point that compliments my other thoughts that these freaks have been very much pushed out of the cities. Segregated, but have a lot of humanity.
ALSO! The way the freak touches the main characters face is a very human gesture as well! Humanity again. AH! There are so many layers to this animation. The analysis part of me is in love xD
The freaks aren’t freaks at all are they? They’re just “outsiders.” someone different from yourself and your peers or what you know they should be like. Or maybe even what society says they should be like.
Only noticed the "dont float" graffiti now. A lot of the wasteland has floating elements. 👀 his scarf was floating too. And the peoplr were as well. Now i'm wondering if the reason why he only ever sees freaks in the wasteland is because freaks can stay on the ground. And hes a freak? Idk man I'm just throwin shit out there.
@@bamdraws no they aren’t underwater because he wouldn’t be walking, and in the newest one it shows stuff floating in the air, maybe gravity’s all messed up and the reason the skeletons are floating is because they aren’t heavy enough, so what ever is making the other gravity can pull them
So people can escape autodale! Is it toxic out there, with freaks being mutated? How many more matriarch are there? Are those other towns just failed replicas/predesecors of autodale? It's beautiful short and the animation is amazing. Hope to see more of this world. :)
In the short you see a town were the motto there is be glamorous. And in other town you see that they have the same motto that all have to do with being pretty. Also in this short you see more of the same stuff in other towns but a little different than the others
@@katierasburn9571 so immortal machine showed the beginnings of our Autodale, right? You remember the Inventor and the young girl who was saved by the goddess? There was a horrible disease being spread around. Im thinking the Inventor (who I assume is the current Mayor of Autodale as well) gathered as many people as he could and founded Autodale. For the unlucky people who weren’t healed or taken into refuge, they were left in the wastelands to suffer from the disease. I’m guessing many might’ve simply died, but for those who could survive the disease, they were transformed into the freaks we know. After the formation of the towns, people would inevitably escape, hence the journals and masks the main character finds. For those who didn’t die from natural causes, I’m thinking the survivors became infected with the virus, and with no matriarch to cleanse them of the infection, they became freaks. Although some may be like the protagonist of this short and not realize they are a freak, others may be perfectly cognizant of their transformation, but hold onto their old mask and try to retain some of their humanity. That’s just my thinking though. I think it lines up pretty well with what we know so far.
@@keyboardcockatoo4567 There's also another possibility: "Merry Madness" is still part of the continuity. The Freaks can be the last remnants of the kind monsters, like the "Wise Rat", living in "merry madness" with humanity before the Sickness claimed most humans and drove the other to hunt and kill the monsters to near extinction. The Freaks are unaware of being "Freaks", because in the "Merry Madness" world they were just people, just different. Hence the Kid Freak of Don't Feed the Freaks feeling himself human and wanting to see Autodale, the last city standing while every other city failed (we know that: Autodale got Hive, proactive and more than willing to keep the Matriarch alive no matter what, the other cities had to "make do" and when the monarchs died they went under). And hence Autodale getting xenophobic and Freaks-hating: humanity drove the monsters extinct and blamed them for the Sickness, now Autodale, despite not believing in the sickness, believe in the Mayor, the Hive and the Matriarch keeping them safe and the Friendly Shadow protecting the good human people by the evil freaks
That "monster" or "freak" as said that pointed towards the sun (a symbol of enlightenment) was actually a human that managed to escape and survive one of the massacres of their own Town or ya know Autodale... This person who still held onto their past (you can see them holding onto a mask) unlike the other freaks looked down at the man's collection of masks, remnants of their own "pretty" society. So, after careful observation basically pointed him into the direction where one of those cities still manage to live on. They basically said "So you're curious of your past huh kid? Think that it was perfect? That WE were to blame? Alright ... I'll show you where you can find your answers...and learn for yourself what really went down" The perspectives in this series are beautifully crafted.
Hmmm. I wonder why that is. He had to mention that so maybe its important. God I love this series! It's so straightforward but at the same time, such a mystery!
Been waiting so long!!! FINALLY YES The freak at the end had the scarf. Do you think travelers are seen as freaks? Or was that freak not so friendly? Edit: Woah! Thank you so much for all the likes!!!
After watching the first Making Of of the mayor/exeptional girl episode, i HAD to rewatch this one. This blew my mind and i don't know why i only watched this once a long time ago. Its so good and builds up the big reveal to the mayor episode so incredibly well!!
I study first year A-level sociology and this video reminded my of functionalism. This is more referring to "Being Pretty" but I wanted to get this down whilst I remembered it. Functionalism is a perspective that sees a person as a cell, a group of people ( like a family, school or business) as an organ and society as a living breathing creature. They believe that everyone has a set function that they must complete, no questions asked. Functionalists believe that individuals must set aside their own desires, as "greed" for something other than their set role will cause the collapse of society. What made me think of functionalism was the creepy bit at the end of "Being Pretty," where they "uglies" were being killed. There are several aspects that just screamed out to me because they are what functionalists don't like. The pretties that are accepted because they are exactly the same; following rules and not stepping out of line (this is what functionalists like). On the other hand, the uglies are what functionalists don't like. They don't like same-sex couples because they cannot have children. They aren't the biggest fans of the elderly because they can no longer form their previous function. They aren't fans of anything that puts their view of society at threat. To functionalist, education and the nuclear family (mother, father and children) are incredibly important as they mould children into what society needs, people who will obey. The parents teach children to behave, and education enforces the hierarchy of authority they children will meet in the work place. In the "making or being pretty," Mrs Armsby said how he saw a world were adults were brain washed into beings with no individuality and nothing that makes them unique, and the children grow up to be just like their parents. I believe that Autodale is a society where functionalism takes it too far and over rides the other, vital perspectives that makes our society they way it is today (like the personal-life theory that looks at how relationships impact the individual and not the society). I'm not saying functionalism is all bad because they present values that a society needs for building blocks (like how to keep social order). This is just my theory based on what I've learnt in class. If people reading this disagree or know more about the subject and want to correct me please do. Like I said, I'm in the first year of the course and I'd like to know what other people think of me. Thank you for reading my one am essay on functionalism.
Woah, this does sound pretty similar to their system. I also used to see parallels between society and a function of an organism, but would've never predicted it could be taken to such a degree. Good luck with your A-levels!
I think Auto Dale is (or was?) a society maintaining authority by fear of the freaks. I think the freaks destroyed it for some reason, and everyone was evacuated to a second Auto Dale.
“It sounds like a paradise”

As I read it he said it sounds like a paradise
The one that showed the MC the direction to autodale was carrying what i believe to be its own mask from when it had once been human.
yoo u a genuis that's an amazing theorie
I like your theory
wow...
U'r pretty!
I like how he doesn’t hate the freaks. He just thinks their misunderstood.

@@dn2k718 No. The Freaks are other wanderers but he doesn't understand them so he sees them as Freaks. The Freak at the end is the Wanderer, we can tell by the scarf, he is seen as a Freak by those who live in Autodale, he is an outsider, a freak.

Bio Tenki Who’s the “Wanderer”?

True but it seems like the freaks were trying to fit in, they were holding the masks. And that one freak even showed the guy the way to Autodale
What if he is actually a freak? He's carrying a mask too, and it had the same scarf.
The “freaks” are survivors of the “old autodale” because the survivor when he reached current Autodale, the freak had his scarf.
@Daniel Hawkins he IS the freak. freak is just a term used to describe someone who isn't the same as them. it's based on his perspective. so to the people at autodale he's a freak, just like he saw the people of Town as freaks too just because they weren't the same as him.
He's a freak to new autodell citizens
Daniel Hawkins my theory is that outside is horribly irradiated and he sees himself as what he was but he is a freak on the outside and that is why the freaks don’t attack him immediately but if he poses a threat they will attack him even though he’s a freak as well.
@@bubbubthealmighty9240 That explains their superhuman strength.
Who knows?
The “freak” at the end wore the kid’s scarf. The monsters aren’t literal. They are an illusion, a metaphor for people different than you
So, do you think they are humans or not?
Or those robots create the illusions around them to make anyone thats not from their city look like a monster?
@@he3004 theyre humans but to the audience on all of our screens, we see monsters.
assgore I’m not sure to be honest.
WAIT A MINUTE
At the end i realized that
He is a monster but he sees everyone as a monster but not him
Well, it fits with the reveals in Immortal Machines and the Making Of.
In the Merry Madness world monsters didn't see themselves as "scary monsters"
The Rat was a chill dude in love with some sort of demon-thing and claiming she did love him back, a friend of all people sharing stories with kids of every race.
The explanation is the freak = foreigners. At the end he migrates to another place but there he is the freak
That "Freak" that pointed him to autodale could well be a curious child taking a risk going up to what they view as a freak. Perspective is a crazy thing.
Or he knew people see him was a freak but wait the kid with the scarf he sees the other kids in autodale was humans that's means oh I'm so confused now we really need answers
this reminds me of "Men against fire" from Black mirror
The ending has me thinking that upon reaching Autodale... the human was a freak, too.

i am most intetested in how the scenery in the bit with the last dead person he finds before reaching autodale is inverted. gravity is inverted. do you think this is supposed to throw us off a bit and make us feel as unfamiliar with the setting as he feels? or is it something more literal than that?
Maybe they're building themselves? The others were almost finished and maybe they're all going to join together to rule the world? that's just my theory
Strike Fighter473 yeah do that
Some things don't need to be said.
For those of you returning after Immortal Machine- I’m pretty sure the freaks are the result of the disease around the world, and that’s what infected humans turn into
where do you think this falls in the timeline, before or after the events of friendly shadow and/or immortal machine
Maybe when they get sick they produce light gas which makes them float
If the disease turns me into an 8-foot two-tailed kangaroo dinosaur, I’ll skip the vaccine thanks.
that is what I thought when I saw this for the first time. are humans freaks?

He's not.
This is support in the fact that if they did function in the same way as autodale the town would most likely still be functioning.
Close, but not quite. A for effort though!
I think that Autodale is the only working town. And I think that it's the first town to create a HIVE.
This series would make an amazing game.

Omg that’s a really good theory
There's a second woman, so I'm wondering if that means maybe the "freaks" were people from past autodale cities, and that's why the protagonist can't remember anything, maybe they turned into these things upon the destruction of their city... or death?

I can understand this in two ways:
1. The traveler is actually a freak who read books and believes to be a human.
Or
2. Since the traveler is new, different to Autodale, since he wasn't raised with brainwashing, he's neither pretty or ugly. To the people living there, he is a freak
Completely agree
monika kavaliunaite agreed
Completely random thought but... "Hej hej monika hej bode monika 🎶"
Brandon Greenland - Glenforest SS (2172) that moment is implied as a nightmare
There could also be a chance a Freak found the deceased man, took his scarf and book, and decided to use it to find his way to Autodale
That or a Freak followed him into Autodale
What's odd is the fact is that they have their masks still. It really shows how crazy people will stick to their cause even when their organization has fallen. It's scary.
I see people all the time wearing masks in their car alone...This short is so prophetic and ironic that it was created before the flu season manipulations by the Representatives that only want to protect us from the ugly. LOL
Their not crazy, its hard to explain but, the citizens just live their life in a way that to us may seem incredibly awful and unethical but, if they looked at our world they'd see it as just as awful, terrifying, monstrous, its all about perspective
I find the "freaks" quite cute looking actually-

You mean deathclaws? No Chief no
Furry

Haha yeah same I find them cute too
“I don’t sleep anymore”
He says this right after the encounter with the freak after it cut him not to mention he wakes up and the scar is already almost gone which to me means one of two things
1.he became a freak and now has regeneration abilities
2.there was a time skip
The Freaks are metaphorical, not actual monsters.
William He explained it well enough.

They look sad and lonely, like they want a friend. It makes me sad
They're faces and expressions are, calm and welcoming in a way, but everything else is scary
I gotta agree to this.
So two theories
The more realistic one for this story; everyone views outsiders who don't wear masks as freaks (outsiders are usually viewed as beasts)
A fun one though; is that the narrator is a freak and that they are a species of their own; he just fell in love with humanity and believed himself to be one
I subscribe to the theory that he’s an insane Freak.

The message is of people today feeling alone and scared by other people. So yes, this is where we are today.
If you feed them, you become sympathetic, most of this society is very anti feelings, just do what your supposed to do.
The mutation allows freaks to live out in the wild, unlike unmutated humans, which is why he’s gotten farther than any of the people whose books he finds.
yes
Good hypothesis, because that "freak" in friendly shadows take multiple shot to die, and damn strong, knock away robot with one hand.
Look like the freak are real mutation, not because Autodale engineered people to see stranger as freak illusion.
I think the signs that say "be more glamourus" is the "be pretty" of that other town

I showed the whole series to my mom and she said “I have no idea what this is about but it’s awesome.”
End Cat My mom was super confused
Ok I’m thinking everyone in the, let’s call it, “no mans land” is seen as a freak. They all see themselves as humans but see each other as freaks...
That sounds better than my idea! But I was thinking that there were people outside the towns that survived and didn't see others as freaks, but the people in the cities were brainwashed to see everyone not from their town as a freak.
Then why do some travel in groups
Narednik Đubo, I think some travel in packs because they seek companionship of any kind. Think of it as a human and a dog, they all see each other as the dog.
That's what I thought as well! It's also interesting is that he sends all of the skeletons as human.
So basically "Autodale" is doomed to inevitably fall apart like the other Towns?
Yes.
@@zenoblues7787 This may mean nothing. But how did the scarf guy get IN autodale at the very end???
@@itsshrimp91 I assume "Freaks" trying to get into Autodale is so rare the Matriarch doesn't have robots patrol the outer edges.
“Sounds like a paradise,”
Yeah, compared to the outside.
This is a terrifying take. Please never go into politics
Are you continuing the autodale series? There are still so many questions and things to open on, it's absolutely amazing!
I'm sure you already know, but he's announced that he's working on a very big project that continues on the series.
A new video was recently released announcing a few more videos soon :)
I think the 5th one was just released! Called "model citizen"
@@indiefaerie1019 It was indeed! :)
I am starting to get the timeline and picture now
Its kind of sad if you think about it.
No offense, but I've never seen this masked thing; so I'm kind of confused, lol
u a salty ass
Than go watch the other parts they’re called: Being Pretty, Children’s Toys and No Monsters
mom: what are you watching?
me: an animation called ‘dont feed the freaks’
mom: guess you’re not getting dinner tonight
Oh no shame... :o
i don’t care anymore OOF
tf this actually happened to me
I don't want cold Mac n cheese anyway
Pfffff camon, how old are you?!
The ‘freak’ at the end was wearing the wanderers scarf, does that mean ‘freaks’ are just people who they view as monsters or different than them?
UNDERRATED COMMENT OML

Glad you think so! These are things I've been noticing, small details, over and over again in these shorts. Decided to share for a change :)

The freaks aren’t freaks at all are they? They’re just “outsiders.” someone different from yourself and your peers or what you know they should be like. Or maybe even what society says they should be like.
Naterey yea it’s all about perspective. In other words, how people see others though their eyes. Only you, the character sees “the freaks” like that.
Alexander Zheng in my perspective they’re adorable and look cuddly lol
This is both the most beautiful and scary at the same time.
It's fantastic
Only noticed the "dont float" graffiti now. A lot of the wasteland has floating elements. 👀 his scarf was floating too. And the peoplr were as well. Now i'm wondering if the reason why he only ever sees freaks in the wasteland is because freaks can stay on the ground. And hes a freak? Idk man I'm just throwin shit out there.
Ho mmm
Thats actually a really good theory
at the end it transitions from the scarfed man to a "freak's" arm, signifying that he was able to traverse because he is one
The areas that are floating are underwater. The guy and the freak at the end are the same character
Also in this short you see more of the same stuff in other towns but a little different than the others
i want a full movie based around this.

Yeah and is it was a series with the same animation that would be so cool
At the same time tho I want to keep it to myself lol
Yes
Even after “immortal machine” this just raises more questions than quelling them
I would rather say this answers a lot of em
@@weird519 that too
Came here for this too. Who are the freaks???
The freaks don’t deserve to be called freaks.
They’re kinda cute.
Cat Z ikr
Cat Z tru
They look like a kangaroo but the Fallout version of a Kangaroo

They look pretty bad ass and adorable. Like chappie. I want one
The new video theory in the making

God I love this series! It's so straightforward but at the same time, such a mystery!
Been waiting so long!!! FINALLY YES
The freak at the end had the scarf. Do you think travelers are seen as freaks? Or was that freak not so friendly?
Edit: Woah! Thank you so much for all the likes!!!
Maybe they see them selfs as ppl. But really they are the monsters. It doesn't really make sense, like why would he run them another freak?
Or maybe everyone from the town will see any new ppl as freaks. So than ppl wouldn't want to leave.
I think you’re right. It had the same scarf on as the guy. So outsiders or travelers are seen as freaks.
Needs to be a game or movie

This kinda explains the whole matriarch thing
K
Woah, this does sound pretty similar to their system. I also used to see parallels between society and a function of an organism, but would've never predicted it could be taken to such a degree.
Good luck with your A-levels!
Antimatter_NVF thank you. Writing that mini essay was good revision for me.

“I hope it’s real.”
No you don’t.
I think Auto Dale is (or was?) a society maintaining authority by fear of the freaks. I think the freaks destroyed it for some reason, and everyone was evacuated to a second Auto Dale.
Kimberly Scholl it seems as though there are multiple Autodales as referenced when he said “Between towns”.
Seriously, you should get a tv deal or something. This stuff is legit amazing!
