      A. Either people that find "smooth and soothing" annoying for whatever reason or...
      B. People who are just JEALOUS of duchesses traits, channel, skill and I'd imagine including even her voice would be one as well.
It's never particularly very smart asking naive questions like that over your own "but I think it sounds nice" or... "but it's awesome" bias. in life's personal experiences? people will be mean for whatever reason they deem fit and WILL complain about anything regardless of how stupid or trivial it is...
Of course... something stupid or trivial... is in the perspective of the beholder. . .

Another tip for those who want to start a channel: Have a safety net before you start. A big safety net. Because of that inconsistent paycheck. A lot of creators dont talk about that safety net enough.
I have a day job and that has made it impossible to maintain and be passionate about my social media because I'm drained of energy by the time I get home. So that's why all my socials are dead at this point and I feel because of that it's next to impossible to get it back in the algorithm once I can pick it back up. I have tried having a upload schedule and get nothing in return for months. It's an oversaturated market online but my art and style don't fit in with marketing offline and in the real world. So in my mind right now it's "What's the point?" Even as a unwilling hobbyist of this whole thing, a part of me wonders if it's even worth posting my work out there knowing the dark side of doing that (ie AI generator potentially stealing it, some troll going in and tearing it apart) . I have not seen someone who works full time on UA-cam and do art fulltime while having a day job that's not art full time and balance it and still maintain their mental health safely. UA-cam makes it darn near impossible.

Even though I’m not an artist, I do have a day job and trying to succeed on UA-cam. I agree that it’s impossible to work on something else, let alone two while having a day job. You’ll get too tired after work to do anything else, leaving you with nothing to do other that work for the rest of your life. That’s why getting a day job instead of focusing on my UA-cam channel back when I was in college will forever haunt me as my biggest mistake I’ve done in my life. I am a failure simply because I played the game by the rules. They told me to study and get a job after graduating, so I did those things instead of pursuing my dreams. Now, the only thing I do is just work, sleep, work, sleep. And that’s just 1 “side hustle”! I cannot imagine how a person would do art, social media, and day job at the same time. That’s why I think day jobs are exclusively for people who have no passion.

I have a passion for art and animation, but there weren't any majors that offer an art or an animation degree. So I had a hard time trying to pick from the limited selection of majors that my college has.
When I found out that my YT channel gained success overnight, I was estatic. I considered not going to college and doing UA-cam full time but my mom didn't allow me lol. She told me I shouldn't abandon school.
And that was a good thing since the success of my channel was only temporary and I had a hard time trying to keep the numbers stable to the point where I became burnt out. And let me tell you-I only earned like 12 dollars within the course of 1 year.
I ended up finding a major that I'm passionate about, which is Computer Science, and now I plan to incorporate that in my channel if I have the free time to do so.
I don't treat UA-cam as my main source of income, but merely something that I can get pocket money from, which removes the burden and pressure of trying to keep up with trends and consistency.

I've been getting more views just by numbers, still I only know about 1 person who regularly shows up and writes comments, and about a few who silently watch me sometimes, but I do feel that I'm progressing and making better videos each time, and I'm getting closer to making proper videos that I can be truly proud of and I'm looking forward to what I'll be capable of and I feel ready to face all the hardship. 17:51 I agree with this so much, because I’ve experienced this first hand. Back when I originally made my channel I made gacha cringe videos for a very long time. For a while I was alright with this, because these videos were fun for me to make but eventually I got bored. So I completely stopped making those videos, and I just upload whenever and whatever I want to as long as it makes me happy rather than going by a schedule of uploading every four days and making the same videos over and over. When I came to this conclusion I was aware that not as many people would like my content or even unsubscribe. Unfortunately it did take me a while to realize that it wouldn’t be the end of the world if I stopped making those videos. I had to take my own time to realize that I couldn’t please everyone and I was better off doing whatever makes me happy.

While I haven't really started a channel yet (looked into for years!) I'm in a weird place where I finally can.
My chronic Illness prevents me from working, which is both a blessing and a curse. On the downside there's all the negative things that come with my illness; but on the other side I have all the time to draw, play games, whatever. So with that time I've been drawing a ton, and try to treat it like a job. Of course, there's times when I can't do much for long/ varying periods due to flare ups, but I always come out of them!
I feel lucky that it's something I can focus full time on, rather than never having time if I had a job. And now that I got myself a nice laptop that has the ability to... well actually function compared to my old one lol- but now I can run games way better, and also record them. So if I already like playing games and have plenty of time to make videos, why not? Especially since I've been wanting to for years!
I don't planning on separating the channels I post art or game stuff to. At least for now anyways- I don't have the energy for that. So when I do post (not on this account I'm commenting from), I'll be doing what makes me happy!

Honestly, this is so true with being a content creator/artist on most platforms, and that's really tragic. I've built a pretty decent following for my webcomic and am just starting to experience some of these things now. Getting hate comments/creepy para-social people DMing you is the not so fun underside to being a growing creator. It takes A LOT to get used to that and people constantly critiquing every little thing you do in general, even when they mean well. Thanks for making this video and helping to spread more awareness on this topic. I think it's really important that people have this info so that they can make an informed decision before jumping in to this "content creator" thing.

I started a youtube channel when I was 10 and I (who was a 10 year old child) reacted really badly to it. Since I was so young, i'd make very bad responses like videos insulting the person sending the hate comment. Because of my bad responses I ended up getting cancelled as well as got people spamming dislikes on my channel as well as spamming a bunch of slurs into my comments. I deleted my channel in 2018 and even 2 years later in 2020 someone hacked an admin in my discord server and started spamming slurs in it as well as banning all my moderation bots. And I know for a fact the hacker was one of my haters from my old youtube channel because the admin was someone I knew from back then.
If you are young, don't make a youtube channel unless you are 100% sure you are mature enough. Because an immature reaction to hate comments (like insulting the hater back) can fuel the fire even more. Because of how young I was, it also affected my self esteem.
Make sure you are mature enough to handle the hate. And don't overshare. When I was 10 I straight up posted my address in my own comment section as well as shared my line ID, That is not a good idea, if the haters found my address and line ID who knows what they would have done.

I don't know...maybe we all should give the artists a break when criticizing them.
I'm watching this sketch's details, too much to count. You'd expect an artist to look fine when animating this under a tight schedule and budget, but even as I'd say that someone swooning over a transformer's cheated anims and then gets mad at you is no joke, the golden age when appearing again will wreck such a hard worker!
That's why I'm now glad to draw crooked lines, and you should ask all the animators of anime that are dead from years of 24/7 draws on the reason why. This is a major problem needing exploitation.

Awesome video Celestia! For me, UA-cam is just a hobby and I don't expect to turn it into a career job at any point. I've been on UA-cam for over 10 years now and I still don't have over 1,000 subscribers. But thankfully, my channel has been slowly growing over the years and I just continue making content that I like rather than cave in to what the UA-cam algorithm wants (especially since I don't know what the algorithm really wants). Also, I will admit that even though I want over 1,000 subscribers for my channel, I'm also dreading the moment where my channel reaches 1,000 subscribers because that means that I will start getting even more hate comments. But, I dealt with some hate comments before, so hopefully I can deal with them a bit better if my channel reaches 1,000 subscribers.
Also, I was wondering if you are going to do a video about whether or not Instagram and Twitter are good places to showcase your art. Like maybe you could talk about how toxic Twitter can be or how Instagram also has their own algorithm issues?

    I started uploading recently.
I will handle hate when it comes, it means people actually bothered to open my video , and it got a big enough reaction for them to comment on it.
    No hate at the moment.
I mostly do this for fun, if someone will help me financially, it means my content is worth something.
I make weird animations that won't fit a wide audience, probably.
Spreading my animations is fun, this also turns youtube into a portfolio.
I have occasional art jobs on the side to help me, so, I can spend my time uploading my odd stuff.
So, I am pretty much ready for whatever comes.

The last one was the main reason why I feel super sad for youtube creators, you can only do one thing and be stuck doing it again and again, I see many channels literally die because the creator wanted to do new things, as a person I still find it mindboggling that so many people will stop following you because you post something different than the usual, and one of the motives I miss old deviantart, was quite fun to watch an artist you follow change from different subjects or different art styles, now you need to enter a mold or else people stop caring for you, many incredible artists nowadays only draw one subject and in the same art style, you don't get variation anymore because people will stop following or caring if you change even silly stuff like fandoms

    • @devolays
      @devolays Рік тому +13

Okay I will explain from a normal viewer's perspective.
There are countless creators on youtube and there are only 24 hours in a day. Viewers don't have unlimited time on their hands to give their attention to each and every content creator they like. And, imagine that, viewers may be already following dozens if not hundreds of different content creators. How are viewers supposed to keep up with everyone doing more and more stuff? They can't.
So, naturally, they start making choices and sacrifices. They must do, because they have limited time. So they start to choose what to watch and what to skip. They choose the content they feel is the most valuable for them. And, you may find it surprising, but viewers are often following a content creator not for his personality or for who this creator is, but for what he does. So, if this content creator starts doing something else instead, the viewer may decide to stop watching - because there are other content creators that do what that person wants to watch.

    • @katokianimation
      @katokianimation Рік тому +9

@@devolays it still sucks though. And it isnt only the viewers. It is the algorythm that supress channels that offers diversity. 10 years ago you could make your passion projects without effecting how much your regular content will be visible for your followers.
Nowadays on the other hand a single video could be bombed just because it isnt algorithm friendly and it will drag the whole performance of the channel down.
If you had found a formula to be popular, youtube will force you to recreat it until people are getting bored of you.

One thing I'd like to add (and I hope you read this, even if you don't reply)
Is that sometimes you just never gain traction in numbers. It's really inspiring to see a new channel doing something you like gain hundreds of subscribers in the first weeks, and then just keep growing; only for you yourself to give it a go and your numbers not only don't go up nearly as fast, they barely go up at all. It can be heartbreaking to be going into your 4th year and still have less than 100 subscribers and have videos you post daily getting view counts in either 0 or 1. And you can try advertising yourself and changing who you are, and imitating countless others or go completely solo and do your own thing and only gain 3 subscribers in a single month. Life is just like that sometimes. Some of us have the cards stacked against us, and that's okay, that's why it's vitally important to start off doing things you genuinely enjoy. Because you could be doing let's plays for seven and a half years and no one will ever hear of you.

This was a great video! I don't think UA-cam is a viable platform for a long term career and it's even worse for artists. I did start a channel and it's very tiny and I quickly saw that I had to pivot my content. I have chosen a very narrow niche now (digital art) but I do it because I enjoy it and there may be others who can learn something. I decided I am not chasing audiences and while I do take suggestions for things to cover it has to fit in with what I plan to do so it can get added to the list. You are so right about the time and energy it takes..it's ridiculous really what it takes to do one video weekly. And I work a FTJ, I also make and market my art as well as prep for videos. I have made it so I do the simplest process I can... Recording my screen and focus on what I am demonstrating. No fancy camera angles or speed painting or elaborate editing or scripting, tried that and I just don't have the time to invest to that extent with so little return. Plus as I have said elsewhere... It actually takes away from my actual art practice, physically and emotionally and that is not acceptable to me. UA-cam is a tool for me, not the end game. Thank you for sharing this we need more of it.

It is really great to see this trend of bringing attention to the "not so dream like" parts of social media careers. It is so important to keep this in mind when thinking about where you want to be with your job in the future.
For me youtube started out as a hobby and it still is. I love Speedpaints and I wanted to try out creating them of my own pieces. And I still enjoy watching my own speedpaints and see the progress I made.
Even though I started taking my channel a bit more serious ca. half a year ago, it is still so tiny, that I don't really get engagement or many comments. At the same time I know that speedpaints are not pushed at all by youtube and I would need to upload a lot more often. But it also gives me the freedom to try out things without being afraid.
So for me the most important thing at this point is, that I can enjoy my videos and consider youtube as a hobby with the little addition of taking it a bit more serious and less "on and off".

no. 3 - the exact reason why I've deleted my yt channel years ago. It was super fun when I was a student, but when I got my first full-time job in gamedev (means, add crunchtime lol) I had to quit yt, because I was constantly depressed that I don't have time and energy to draw and record enough personal pieces anymore. I honestly miss my little yt comnunity and all that "let's draw together" energy we used to have, but sometimes you have to choose. I've chosen to make close to zero personal art, but to focus on my day job without burning out. Also getting married and starting a family, but that's a bonus that came with me no longer pulling drawing all-nighters every day after work :p
I would absolutely love to start one again in the future though (maybe on retirement lol), and it was 100% worth it to run one when I still had time to do so. But right now with my current lifestyle? No wayyy, yt is like having another job, and day is only so short. But when you have enough free time and feel like you want to try it, I'd say go for it, it was super fun experience ♥️
