Really cool! Thanks for sharing!
What I like most about this video is how clearly you zoomed in on your palette, allowing us to see not only the flow and opacity of your paint, but also how it reacts when you pull at it with your brush. This kind of detail is absolutely essential for newer painters who might struggle with things like the differences between base, layer, shade, and glaze consistencies. Honestly, I wish content creators would focus more on their palettes while painting, especially when doing things like wet blending--but maybe I'm alone in that.
Djinn and Jews thank you! And thank you so much for your feedback as well. I'm really glad you told me this, because I was considering not doing that shot. I mainly did it because I rarely use precise ratios and usually prefer to "eyeball" it. Definitely will be doing that for other paints in the future. :)
Ratios are useless unless we're all using the same paints. You seem to use only Citadel, while I paint mainly with Warcolours and Scale 75. Even within brands there are base and layer paints, and natural variations in pigment density, etc., all of which render phrases like "2:1" and "milky" useless. What is actually helpful is seeing directly how the paint behaves--not just its color density and the opacity along its edges. That close up shot WAS the tutorial for me, as I already own and use Agrellan Earth and white primer; and I can use Paint Rack on my phone to discover that Scalecolor's Sky Blue and Warcolours' Blue 2 are near-perfect matches for Thousand Sun's Blue. The most important information for me was how to thin those colors to the right consistency, and you showcased it beautifully. Please continue to highlight this important step--especially if you are going to do tutorials on complicated techniques like wet and loaded brush blending, NMM, etc.!
Also, congratulations on hitting 100 subs. Many more are deserved, and doubtlessly forthcoming.
Djinn and Jews Very well said! And I need to pick up some Scale 75 paints, I've heard nothing but good things. Anyway, thank you so much again for your feedback, support, and advice (I totally forgot about Paint Rack!).
Scale 75 makes wonderful paints! A lot of people say their Scalecolor line is superior to the Fantasy & Games stuff, but I'm not sure I could make that distinction. Then again, I have their entire base set and only 8 out of 48 F&G paints, so . . .
Anyhoo, I thought I'd toss out a request for a future video. Please feel free to disregard if I'm being stupid. I would like to see a model--any model, really--being painted in real time, but with the emphasis throughout the video remaining on your brush. When you add paint to your palette, show in detail how you thin it, and to what consistency, and how it behaves on the palette and the brush both. Clearly indicate how heavy a paint load you draw, how much you wick off, etc.; and then give us closeups of the paint actually being applied.
Don't focus on teaching any particular painting technique in this scenario. Let the lesson be the specific ways in which you mix, thin, apply, and generally handle the paints themselves. I guarantee someone will find it immensely useful, even if he's me.
Djinn and Jews Gah I totally missed this comment. Sorry bout that! And I totally get what you're saying. Just an in depth look at paint consistency across all aspects of a model. I'll add it to my to do list for sure. Thanks for the idea!
definitely one of the best videos for this style i have seen. thank you
This is one of the best tutorials I've seen on youtube since I started playing 40k
I have been stressing about ice bases for years - this video has fixed all that. Thanks!
In addition to Valhallan Blizzard I’d recommend/add Geek Gaming Scenics’ Base Ready Snow powder. Best snow effect I’ve seen for minis period, and would definitely be my go to for snow for minis and bases
Yeah I would say to add the snow after the model is on the rest on the base
This is a great video, can't wait to try this out for myself! Thank you for this!
One of the best tutorials out there for snow/ice bases. I used some blue glow in the dark paint over the blue and it turned out extremely well.
Thanks for the tutorial!
Hi, absolutely loved it! Just a small tip of the day. Use a basecoat paint, just any will be ok, just paint underneath the agrellan earth with it. It has a slight different consistency than spray paints, and agre earth won't come off that easily.
I've been looking for a tutorial like this - thanks heaps, looks great!
Thank you so much ive just picked up Beast Claw Raiders and the icy effect is going to help so much
That’s absolutely gorgeous. I am definitely going to use this technique on my 40k Chaos Army
Darcy you smashed it, I like the fact you focused on the flow of paints and everything was clear and in logical steps.
I hope to see more ^_^
Absolutely fantastic tutorial! I love this effect!

Yesss, thank you for coming back! Looking forward to seeing more in the future, and all the best.
Azophi And thank you for your kind words on both this and my first video. I finally finished up all my commissions so I have much more time to work on tutorials. So happy you like them 😁
Cracking video yet again D.B 🤟
Been looking for a tutorial like this for while! Thanks :D
Ah, yes. I have painted over my Agrellan Earth with White Scar, but your idea of using white spray paint is much better. The spay is not as damaging to any delicate paint crackle and will actually provide a good protective cover on it. Thank you.
Thanks for this. Very helpful. The Viva La Dirt league DnD crew are going to have an encounter with a now painted ice giant. Just needed a tutorial
Nice tutorial, Darcy!!!
Blue and white are your colours - the result is fantastic :)...
Olli
Micro balloons and crushed glass also make for really nice ice and snow effects.
Very well done. Thank you.
Thanks so much for this tutorial. Very inspiring ... you know I am an mid50 starting into miniatures again so I am pretty new to this mediums available now (I built my last mini back in my youth...). Your vid helps me a lot.
Just started Frostgrave, will definately be using this technique ☺️👍
Great quality video and audio. Well done!
Thanks so much for the inspiration
Wow thank you, I'm creating a ice themed khorne deamons armie, this realy helps out.
Wow 👏🏻👏🏻
You can add ard coat on your ice to give it a icy/wet look to it
Raphaël Nasr You are absolutely right! I actually do mention that in the ice weapons tutorial but totally forgot to do so in this one 😅
doing this for beasts of chaos thanks for the guide
this is so cool! i absolutely love the arctic orc so cool! im going to subscribe!
Hey thanks so much! Glad you like it 😃
tutorial muy bueno!!!! great tutorial!!!!! so nice
childry ortega Gracias, me alegro de que te haya gustado! :)
beautiful work!!! thank you!
Thank you! Your name literally made me laugh out loud btw 😄
@@DarcyBonoCreations thank you haha, it's all based on my this ~>' )_/ being the best I could do at creating an original ASCII piece of art lol
Thanks for the top-notch tutorial ! I might steal your icy color scheme for my orruks if you don't mind ;)
Thank you! I would absolutely love to see more icy orcs so "steal" away!
Ahh thank you so much for making this. I've been wanting to make an adeptus mechanicus army from a snowy forge world and needed to look into some snow and ice effects. This was the perfect guide and I already have a pot of agrellan earth at the ready
That's a really crazy coincidence because I JUST bought 2 Skitarii boxes on a whim and wasn't sure how I was gonna paint them and then thought "I guess I could go back to my ol ice an snow scheme" 😄
@@DarcyBonoCreations oh man that's hilarious! Well both have some snowy cogboys then.
We'll see! The more I thought about it, the more I wanna try a bright Princess Jasmine blue with gold and cream 😄 I think their cloaks would look pretty cool in that color.
@@DarcyBonoCreations that would look cool. I want to go for a pots and pans look so a brushed copper metal and then trying to do white China and blue flower details on their metal plates and mechs.....don't even know if its possible at my skill level
Holy cow that would be do unique!! I definitely think you could do it. Just practicing painting the design (and size) you want on paper first so it's easier when you go to paint it for real on the minis!
very nice
This is amazing how am I just finding your channel
Hey thanks! I really don't produce much content and I believe that factors in to the suggested videos and "searchability." But I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
In 2021, how do you think the Aethermatic blue contrast paint would do with this technique?
I actually need to do an update video because 50/50 Talassar Blue and Aethermatic Blue make an even more vibrant icy color 😀Just Aethermatic is ok, but it takes a few coats because Aethermatic Blue is definitely one of the thinner Contrast Paints.
I really liked this video and found the advice very helpfull. Will be looking over the rest of your videos to. Was wondering what you paint your miniatures up for. Do you play Boardgames, Tabletop-games, RPG´s, or do you just paint minis for fun?
Thank you! Happy to hear that :)
I mostly paint just for fun and for commissions. Until recently, I never lived anywhere that had good gaming community. Now I live 5 minutes from a Warhammer store, and I've become obsessed with Warcry 😅
Would you add some blizzard to models higher to simulate snowfall? Thinking of basing my blood Angel's in this to give a bright contrast with the red
Yep! You are exactly right, you can add a light drybrush of it on the heads and shoulders and it comes out great. I've done that on my ogres and my Krampus conversion seen below:

Really nice work, they look amazing. Can't wait to try it out.
What kind of glue do you use to glue your models onto the base, with all this extra on top of it.
It's not really possible to glue directly onto the base.
Thank you! I use gorilla super glue gel. It's really no problem glueing them directly to the base, especially since there is so little basing material on this one. As I mentioned towards the end of the video, as long as you leave a reasonably flat part untouched by a lot of bumpy texture, the minis will have a durable hold on the base. You can always pin your minis to the base as well if you have any doubt that they'll stay.
Would this work with Battletech where the mini is attached to the base a head of time.
This looks amazing, thank you! Been looking for a great ice/snow base video for over a year, never thought to search for "arctic" lol.
All my models are glued to their base at the moment (glued everything together around 14 years ago then took a break sadly).
Instead of spraying the white primer after the earth basing, would painting with ceramic white work?
Thank you again ^_^
Thank you! Yep, brush painting on the white would be fine. Just make sure you don't fill in the cracks too much with paint. You may want to keep a 2nd brush nearby to wipe them out as you go.
@@DarcyBonoCreations Oh right good idea! Thank you again! Ordered my Agrellan Earth just now =D
Any techniques to make a miniature/ character look frozen?
How do you put the mini on the base after you put paint on it?
I just glue it with Gorilla Super Glue Gel. For larger or more dynamic models, I pin them. Artist, Oscar Lars has done a very helpful video on pinning if you're interested:
ua-cam.com/video/788DxU4rYec/v-deo.html
But... If you add the model at the end...the paint does not stick very great to the glue, isn't that a problem?
Hm, I've honestly never had a problem with it. All of my models are glued on after the basing is complete using Loctite Super Glue Gel or Gorilla Glue Gel. As long as you keep a thinner patch for where the feet are going to go, the glue sticks just fine in my experience.
Anybody else see the face at 3:23?
