- Episode 357 : Season 11 : The South Island of New Zealand - Aotearoa
Hello Friends,
On this episode we slip the mooring line after the storms had passed and made our way to Ketu Bay. We had heard that there was good fishing to be found in this bay and after days and days of trying, Rhonda caught two Gurnards (after getting some fresh bait from a near by yacht).

James you look so happy and content. Rhonda is so relaxed being out on the boat. Perfect match take care of each other.
She's driving that boat like a badass. Thumbs up.
Absolutely love seeing Rhonda catching the fish!!!
Love her energy!
I can feel her energy through your videos…😊
What a fabulous sailing companion. Nice to see you both having so much fun. Life is such a glorious adventure its a shame not to share it with good people ❤
Hi James and Rhonda,
I found your content a few weeks ago and I have to say I find it so peaceful watching your way of life, your content is so wholesome and I thank you.
The world needs more people like you guys, steering left from the rat race.
You guys mirror the epitome of happiness.
Much love from Australia. ✌️
Gurnard is one of the best tasting fish in the sea. We usually fry in butter. Good to see some fish coming aboard. 👏
What a catch, all three!!!
New Zealand is like a place where time froze in place. All of the unspoiled nature and wilderness is amazing to see in this way, even more so than in the big production nature documentaries. Incredible stuff James! Great catches by Rhonda too!
It is remarkable and unspoiled for sure
ardern made sure nz froze, economically, socially 😂
even when the weather is not beautiful, it is still beautiful there, wow ⛵ ❤
Brilliant video as always. Thanks to you both for sharing your enjoyments and adventures.
James she is a great fisherwoman proving protein for your ship … we love Rhonda mate
Gurnard (carrots) as we kiwi call em , one of my favourite dishes , gurnard & asparagus in white sauce baked ,, so delicious ,, another great vid as always 👍
Finally a sailor that knows the importance of using a net, good on you...bendiciones...m

G'day James and Rhonda! Thanks for another awesome episode!! Hope you both enjoyed the fish! Cheers.
Looked great fun - I hope you enjoyed your fish lunch. Rhoda seems an excellent companion.
Very cool, the chemistry is awesome to see, and she catches fish ✌️
Threw away the best part of the gurnard. The belly flap is the best bit when smoking.
Thanks Guys…..I’ve only sailed the Hauraki Gulf area, and getting to see the Sounds through your experience is fantastic. Brilliant all round!
It is most certainly worth the trip down to cruise the sounds !!!!
Hi guys, you look so happy together. James you are so relaxed and peaceful Can’t wait for Rhonda to join you in Tasmania. Good to see people falling in. Love is like the first time. Keep up the good work always love the videos Cliff from Logan City Queensland Australia

Great video.
That’s funny, looks like a alien, awesome job , thanks for sharing video 😂
I've resubscribed. Rhonda's awesome and I think she brings out the best of you. I apologize for our conversation that we had . I do have respect for you and your sailing abilities. Rhonda be patient with him you guys are a great team.
Thanks for bringing us along. I with you James, I try to avoid getting near anything with alien appendages, but I suppose if they taste good I'll risk it.
Lovely ending….🕊
great mood in this one eh
i'm a bit of an old crab but 'gotta say., 'likin' Rhonda : )
Fish smokers work really well for Mussels too.
There used to be a lot of Paua in Ketu bay .
Great to see you enjoying the Sounds , my favourite place, are you looking at going to Able Tasman , after Nelson ? Love the videos, great 👍 enjoy and fair sailing 😊😊👍
I didn’t make it to Able Tasman, can’t see it all so I just enjoy what I can see
@@SailorJamesI have a boat in Havlock, lots of fantastic places around the sounds , thanks for Videos and enjoy , great job 👍
She has been a great addition to your life. She's a very classy gal for sure!!
Nice one James. Just binged watched from Cape Reinga.
So cool to see you bond with your ship mate and sounds like your going to connect again in Tasmania. The Tasman sea can be and is a Bitches Brew as you well know. Please make sure your doubly ship shape and Bristol fashion Friend. How about a composite or metal tiller and plenty of grease for those bearings.
Sail the seas friend
Kiwi Matt
👍
I crossed the Tasman solo in February, I was well aware of its dangers and plenty prepared.
@@SailorJames Well I could say Enjoy Tasmania but for all I know you maybe in Sumatra by now
Aloha from Kauai-out to ALL!!!!!⛈️🌈⛈️🌈⛈️🌈⛈️🌈⛈️
Mahalo
Shit man, what's going on with the gloves?
Nice gurnard too.
And did you hear it grunt?
Gurnard tend to grunt.
And yes it's at a recordable volume. Best time and success rate to catch fish in Pelorus is when the Mussel Harvesters are working. Anchor up and row your dinghy over, ask permission to fish, and the skipper normally says yep. Obviously not beside him. A few rows over. You'll see a ton of mussel berley going back into the water. Depending on where you are, you'll get gurnard, blue and red cod, the occasional snapper and whatever. Sometimes skate. There's good recipes online for skate.
As I've said before, you're bringing back memories. Love it in the sounds.
Thank you for sharing mate.
Have you seen Hectors dolphins in there?
I had a pod of 6-8 hang around my yacht...but they do move around. Grayish with black rounded dorsal fin. Anyway keep the episodes coming. Take care in Oz.
You can hear it clearly grunting on this video
@@SailorJames oops. I'll plug my ear pieces in. Again thankyou for the upload. Atb.
What do you use for refrigeration? Any advice on that front after all the experience and use?
I have an isotherm cold plat system that has worked great
great eating fish those carrots lol
Two peas in a pod...😃
Gurnard best baked
I think you should kidnap Rhonda and take her on all future travels. Great vid James
We are in Spring here, is it considered Fall there?
When this was filmed in January it was middle of summer in NZ
Ask a KIWI they would be only to happy to show you how to fillet
That’s exactly how you fillet a gurnard, look it up
I wonder how many people got the Naked Lunch reference.
All the Mugwumps raised their glasses
That shark looks like a Spiny Dogfish, or mud shark
What kind of starlink do you use? THXS!!
Are you happy with it??
I don’t understand the question. I didn’t know there was more than one type of starlink 🤷🏼♂️
@@SailorJames Yes there are... How it is working for you
Works fine
Nice fishing Rhonda, the only thing I've ever caught fishing is a cold, I'd probably starve at sea 😂
😂😂😂
James after living a hermit's life do you find it odd to have a shipmate for 16 days or do you enjoy splitting the chores?
It’s not odd 👍🏻
My guy is gaining that happy weight :)
😉
James, is Ronda gone in real time? 😢is she coming back?!
Many more adventure videos with Rhonda in Australia….
I’m thinking that shark is a spiny dogfish
Lucky they don't have war crimes courts on fish cleaning
Bit dramatic 🙄 look up cleaning gurnards
+1 for Naked Lunch reference.
A message from Interzone
By the way I'm actually next to John winery on G dock just by chance.
What a beautiful looking fush... It a shame to kill it..
If you were in the water it would eat you too 👍🏻
You need someone to show you how to fillet fisk ,you murdered that fish, you take the head off gut it and take both sides off ,fry in butter ,skin on or off
Relax sister, now look up how to fillet Gurnards
Lol. There is a much easier and better way to fillet those fish...
Google bro, you are wrong
It looked like it was somebody's goldfish at one time. You look too pretty to eat. But I guess pretty little fish grow up to be sea monsters someday
See...... I told everyone Lemon Fish at the Fish and Chip shop was a Shark. Well well well
