Roger Deakins on ‘Hail, Caesar!’, 'Blade Runner 2', and the Future of Digital Photography

- One of the best cinematographers in the world is Roger Deakins. If you look over his amazing resume, you’ll see he’s shot so many memorable films, you’d be hard pressed to have not seen at least a few of them. Some of the standouts include Sicario, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, No Country for Old Men, The Big Lebowski, The Shawshank Redemption, Prisoners, Skyfall, Fargo, Unbroken, and True Grit. With Deakins having shot the Coen brothers' Hail, Caesar! I recently sat down with him for an extended video interview.
During the interview Deakins talked about recapturing Hollywood’s Golden Age, the evolution of his relationship with the Coen Brothers, the future of digital photography, the prospect of shooting a movie on a phone, the hardest part of his job, advice for aspiring cinematographers, Blade Runner 2 (which shoots this summer), and so much more.
Hail, Caesar!, which is now in theaters, Josh Brolin stars as Eddie Mannix, an old-time Hollywood fixer who has a reputation for keeping actors’ scandals out of the press. But when Baird Whitlock (George Clooney) is kidnapped and held for ransom by a group calling themselves "The Future", Mannix is tasked with collecting the $100,000 demand and rescuing the star. It’s a classic Coen Brothers set-up and it gives them their first opportunity to delve into the madness of Hollywood since Barton Fink. Hail, Caesar! also stars Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, and Alden Ehrenreich.

Everyone always mentions Leo without an academy award but this man, he deserves one before anyone else. I'm pushing for you this year because I really enjoyed Sicario and the scenes filmed at night were just amazing.
I'd love to have a long conversation with this man. He's a genius.
roger deakins is an absolute legend, but honestly, those interviewer's questions were so bad... you have a genius of cinema and you can ask him such more in-depth questions and you're giving him stuff like what's your favorite camera instead of staying on topic of something and diving into a conversation where you can hear how the man thinks instead of his favorite hardware...
So chill, what a legend
I love his body of work so much. The Shawshank Redemption and No Country for Old Men are among my all time #10 films, and his cinematography is always so impeccable it's crazy. A living legend.
Deakins is most clearly a legend, and it's fascinating to get his insights on filmmaking. However, this was supposed to be a promo for Hail, Ceasar!, yet the interviewer seemed to focus more on future projects and Blade Runner, so that's my minor gripe. But a good watch overall.

Truly great cinematographer. Was nervous about Blade Runner 2, but I know it will be beautifully shot now. Just hope they get the story right.

Does anyone know, when they film these interviews, is there always a green screen behind them, or what do they use for backdrops?
Deakins' intonations, voice and gestures are very Clint Eastwood-esque ;)
5:45 I have so many questions there, does he mean the entire movie will be CGI including the actors? And is he really referring to every genre, not just sci-fi but drama as well, will there be a CGI Schindler's List? lol But why would live action movies become CG when that style's only been reserved for "children's films" up to this point.

Gosh, man... what did you have for lunch that you are burping (2'33") and fixing wrist bracelets all the time and coughing? And why you guys have to cut in such way to make us watch all of that? Common! And Roger Deakins is absolutely my favourite cinematographer and he did great by humbly answering all these silly questions. But Collider really spoiled this interview. And someone give this guy nail polish remover...
I think I'll just listen to this so I don't have to look at this fellow's nails. Not phobic, (I live two blocks away from the S.F. gay ghetto for the last 39 years, and have seen plenty of Folsom St. fairs) It just looks imitative...not original. Kid stuff on an adult. I'm sure Anton LaVey would be happy to know things haven't changed much. Otherwise, I think Deakins is thinking about the world of game technology moving into film, as it has been doing since the first Lord of The Rings. I've seen both Tarkovsky films he mentions. Solaris has a wonderful ending, but the realization that the protagonist goes through goes right through you too. So, Blade Runner 2...well, without a Vangelis score, and sadly, Doug Trumball is not aboard, what's the point? What about Sid Mead? By the way, I would guess Harrison Ford would play the Bryant role now...the older cop who called him in in the first film. Are you ready for the origami Spinner models?
