I feel like the manga and anime could’ve ended at the Cell saga, if Toriyama had foresight and knew where the story would’ve went with Buu, do you think he would’ve ended it? I like Buu a lot but still, Freezer, the space monkeys, and the green bug guy were cool villains.
I think his style reflects his mood. If you look at the one-sheets he did to promote DB in Shonen Jump magazine, his style and proportions would vary a lot. Sometimes they were extremely simple, with economic use of lines and color, and other times very detailed. This man is a genius. He’s got such an understanding of shapes, that when they started making 3-D sculpts (for collectibles and toys,) of his characters, they look exactly like his drawings, from almost every angle.
Yeah I've started to notice that as well, his style can really very, although one thing he always draws well and consistent is art for Dragon Quest. And I definitely agree that he is a genius, have you seen how they made a car of one of his illustrations by any chance? It's pretty amazing
@forgottenrelics1197 I wish you had compared how Future Trunks looked after the 3 year time skip at the end of chapter 419 and then 420. Toriyama definitely intentionally went for that more square Buu Saga style. I'm not even sure it was completely because he was burnt out.
His art style for Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z is so bold and iconic and so intense during fight scenes with the different shading to show moods and the sense of speed with the lines. A real artist and genius, his work will always be popular it's just so great to look at and so expressive. He created such an intelligent and imaginative series.
Yes 100% agree I haven't seen any other art styles that are not only so unique but iconic at the same time. Definitely one of my favorite art styles ever. His character designs especially like frieza, Cell, buu etc. are also much different than many shonen villains. He is quite underrated when it comes to character designs.
To be honest I like the rough art style of the Buu saga, makes the scenes with Maijin Vegeta more expressive and it fits that character’s rage during that time in the story. But overall my favorite period of his art is from end of DB to Frieza saga.
WTF so Akira drew shallot after drawing Cabba!? I can't even wrap my head around this, he drew a better design for a non-canon video game than he did for the main show. Even Future Trunks looks fairly bad, his original DBZ design was muscular, now he just looks like a kid again.
Yeah, it kinda surprised me as well, it seems his character designs for games such as jump force or db legends for example aren't completely skinny and are usually on point, however the quality seems to drop off with the character designs he does for Super, again it isn't bad art but more so just not the quality it once was in my opinion
I think it's the fact that he didn't have a close hand at super, DBS are mostly handled by yamamuro or toyotaro, toriyama only gave them directions, i think he wanted them to draw their own style instead of a complete replica of his own and so his designs are less detailed or loosely based than his other works
Akira did explain that the reason why he purposely made SSJG Goku to look thin was because he wanted a different representation for his God power other than being more bulkier or looking flashy.
Yes, I think he said he didn't want goku to look too macho I think from memory, but my point was that all his characters in general are drawn much thinner, I didn't mean just SSJG.
I think making Goku “thinner” was a way of him making Goku look younger because Gods almost always look like their physical prime no matter how old they get.
@@notgalvatron1698 Wouldn't his physical prime be when he was at his peak, muscularity? I honestly think he just wanted to go back to his simpler DB style is all. Even the excuse for a different representation for God power makes little sense when he appears to lose muscle from his base form instead of simply staying the same. I really do think his artstyle peaked during the Frieza saga. I liked the Cell saga art, but Frieza just had the best color pages :P
I’ve always wished Toriyama would team up with literally anyone to make a Pokémon-style game. The way he draws dinosaurs and other non-human creatures is so unique.
the dragon quest monsters franchise has at least a dozen entries over nearly 25 years. sad to think to most people he'll only ever be "the dragon ball z guy"
It's pretty clear that Akira Toriyama is way more invested in stuff that's outside Dragon Ball like Dragon Quest 11 his design is way better there than what we have for Super.
The change is even more noticeable in the anime Dragon Ball Z in my opinion. Just compare how characters looked in the Saiyan Saga to the Android/Cell Saga.
Yeah, let's talk about Toriyama's workload for a second. He would write & draw a chapter for _Weekly Shonen Jump_ (each being around 14 pages) every single week. The Dragon Ball manga consists, in total, of 519 chapters. For this next part, and the sake of simplicity, let's briefly round up to an even 520. Ok so, there's 52 weeks in a year. He wrote a chapter a week. There's 520 chapters. Yeah...that's 10 years straight. That is insane. Idk _how_ he found time to do _anything_ else at all. [Edit] Grammar/Spelling
Yes and he did designs for games like dragon quest and even wrote several series during dragon ball like go go ackman during that time! And to top it off from memory he only had one editor unlike other manga authors so he really worked like crazy!
Honestly I really like toriyama’s softer and rounder style the eyes look really good and it gives a modern feel. They look like they are drawn in the dragon ball style back when adventures were a huge thing.
Thanks very much man! Yeah views are low but they are much better than what they were several months ago haha. Once I upload some news content it should improve.
I love both takes honestly I feel that they reflect the mood of the current arcs well. I love the rounder style for the more early and laid back stuff and the more gritty sharp artwork for the later battles.
Anime in the 80s had that round curvy aesthetic so that old style of his was part of the times while with Z it became more angular reflecting the period it was being produced in.
God, no wonder his artwork is so revered and admired even to this day. Mans could comfortably change his whole art style to fit the story he was trying to tell, and really took advantage of that ability. Totally unrelated but I'm proud to share a birthday with him too lol. I've only ever even heard of like two other people in my whole life that have the same birthday as me, and he's one of them ✌️
I'd say that the peak of his quality linework was during the early (Pre-Perfect) Cell sagas. The way he drew SSJ Vegeta and Trunks so muscular, smooth, and glossy vs. the massive, creepy, detailed Semi-Perfect Cell was just glorious action. Even the color scheming gives the heroes a bold, standout look, and Cell has a dreary, monstrous figure. 17 and 18 looked thinner like teenagers as they were supposed to, while 16 was well drawn as a hulking, tough man. Even some of the many people models harkened back to Slump's look. That golden era of his drawings is what I think of first whenever I hear "Dragon Ball".
Probably has to do with age more than anything LOL and you forgot two most importnat comparisons just look at dragon ball minus and space patrolman jaco the manga from a few years ago he can still draw with great detail when he feels like it just with character designs hes probably has high demands he does best these days when not preassured he is 63 after all.
Yes I agree with you, he definitely can draw detailed illustrations and designs when he wants to as I pointed out with Shallot. And yes it seems I did forget about those two mangas! I hope I didn't come off like I was attacking him at all, my favorite work is the majority of his old work, however, I do realize his age can play a part in his design choices.
Seeing how Toriyama’s art has declined over the years, it really makes me realize/appreciate his style from DB and DBZ, I used to always try to draw DB when I was little but didn’t know about how much line work/proportion really makes a difference. I used to want to draw manga and stories as a kid/teenager and these videos makes me want to pick that hobby back up
greetings from Colombia, your videos are awesome. I really love the toriyama´s art from 80's and 90's, but when I see a "new" draw made from him, god, it doesn´t look made for the same person.
From a gag manga artist to an action mangaka, this guy is srsly adaptable. It takes skill to do so and he deserves props kinda like go nagai. I won't mind if he were to write for sentai too. That be something else.
Nice video, really surprised how his art style changes back to his basic look. I do think his new designs are drawn basic as their are because they won't show up in the manga or in the anime because their are used as references, the man only writes the outline scripts for both the anime and manga. Personally I think Toyotarō was a great choice to continue the manga, he draws very similar to the cell arc which I think was the best arc in Dragon ball. He's great, BUT his paneling could use some more work, usually their's around nine small panels on a page while Akira Toriyama drew many few panels on page while telling a story within those few panels. Toyotarō : i.neoseeker.com/u/m/2/dragon-ball-super-5803505.jpg Akira Toriyama images.sgcafe.net/2013/01/fully-colored-Dragon-Ball-Z-manga-preview4.jpg In short I think Toriyama is just done wanting to draw the series while Toyotaro is very excited to draw them.
Yeah it's interesting how his style looks like his work even before Dr Slump. But with his designs, though in interviews it is the opposite, he mentions how he draws more complex designs for characters because he won't have to draw them again and again. Also if you look at dragon ball minus you realize that his characters are still drawn kinda thin and not chubby like his older work. I think just depends on how important the project is or how motivated he is. But that's just my guess But yeah I agree with Toyotaro continuing the manga, I actually did a video on him as well comparing his artstyle to young jiji, I encourage to check it out if you enjoy videos like this one!!
Idk if you read jojo, but even Araki who's been making manga from around the same time went in the same direction. They both started with cartoony designs, to bulkier macho characters (they both loved movies so i guess they were both influenced by sylvester stallone, van damme, etc), and then ended with thinner and "softer" character designs, even though araki drifted more towards realism. I'm really curious about what they both experienced to make them go in similar directions.
Loved his older designs. Even tho the new super designs are not that great as the ones in z, they are evolving in the right direction, jiren for example, He looks muscular and bulkier ! I kinda miss the old toriyama! Great video! Subbed! Will you cover Eiichiro oda's arts style as well?! Would love to see that too!
Yep I love all his old stuff as well but yeah I'm glad he has drifted back to some of the bulkier designs😃And thanks for the sub! But yes I might do a review of oda's work one day👍
To be honest I don't know exactly, at first I thought it might just be an instrumental version but I dont think it is. I selected this track from a 46min long vid originally however I cannot find the original video on youtube.
@@ms.antithesis I'm pretty sure they do still, I was able to still find plenty on ebay by viz, although what I would like is a completed subbed version of the anime but that will probably never come
Naohiro Shintani has his own style partially based on both Minoru Maeda’s and Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru’s styles. His version of Goku is pretty handsome though.
Just want to thank everyone for all the recent support this video has picked up. I think this video had like 3 views the first week it released haha so I am truly thankful for everyone who took the time to watch it. You guys are awesome! And the username I mentioned in the video is changed, so if you would like to check out my artwork go to instagram.com/d.bz_arts/ Thanks again.
I think looking at the Dragon Quest Series is one of the best places to see how his art has changed. From Dragonquest 7 onward I originally didn't even realise it was still Toriyama and I love it.
Bro I literally realized the same thing the other day when working on a video, his work on dragon quest is the best visual guide to see the changes in his style for sure
@@Boujonzu Yeah man I was pondering the idea but I didn't know what was left to add to what I had already said in this vid however I thought actually drawing his characters myself in each the respective style throughout the years to give a better visual picture so perhaps I might do a part 2😃
Imo Toriyama had two peaks: one with his older style, during Dr. Slump, and the other during Cell and Bu saga. What I didn't like in his DBZ art is that he seems to use a videogame character editor with few options: all the human characters look the same, except for the hair.
Akira's Dragon Ball change the tide of Anime completely till now. One super simple example is "SUPERPOWER" what I means is RAW POWER that could affect surroundings ,MASSIVE CLASH ,TREMENDOUS STRENGTH ,TERRIFYING DESTRUCTIVE ABILITY, that can be possess. Back then Anime only focus on Sci-Fi (robot), Horror, Mystery and Supernatural Power (power similiar to ghost or demon). But with the existence of DB especially DBZ everyone starts to make a SUPERPOWER anime such as One Punch Man, etc. Dragon Ball is the very spark of Anime with Superpower genre nowadays.
Haha nah the illustration was done by Toriyama, www.daizex.com/multimedia/images/character_designs/ you can tell also as this design was done in watercolor which Toei never used for designs (well from my knowledge).
I like every style of every arc of the manga, that's what make them even more peculiar. For example i'd prefer goku old design instead of making him look like son goten if there was an anim remake of db part
My favorite art styles is dragon ball. Like the beginning because the drawing were original and looked unique and cool and was all over the place. Goku and krilling looking all chubby, yancha and bulma looking more normal. Now kids look skinny and generic lol. And then tien and piccolo saga also looked really good, and beginning of dbz. Like piccolo and goku had bulky/chubby bodies not that muscular and the heads were kind of on the short side. Now they look generic with a proportionate body. Guess i just like weird and unique looking things. But they still look very awesome, and i really like how toyotaro draws the manga. Very good artists indeed
IMO Toei are basing Super's look too strictly based on the designs of Toriyama and Yammamuro, and as soon as they decide to use designs from the likes of Shintaro more, it'll look like a better anime.
I feel like his newer artstyle can be hit or miss for me too as there are pros and cons depending on what he comes out with. Like with the art at 5:22 of the SSB characters, while Vegeta looks a bit too skinny; Goku next to him looks passable. A pro to this style is that I do think the anatomy is a lot clearer, the line work is cleaner and the proportions are better and better defined, like the SS hairstyles if you compare them. As well as the muscles looking tighter and more realistic from what Z lacked. Espcially with the shoulders that did get a bit too wide imo like in Goku's first SS form. At least Goku there 5:22 has some muscle to him, but Vegeta on the other hand, his legs are definitely lacking compared to the Buu arc. While I do prefer it a bit that the bodies don't make them look like power lifers in the newer iterations the new style isnt consistent with where that middle ground is and it being hit or miss is the con. While the newer style has more consistent anatomy, proportions and line work. Z art had overall more proportionate body figures. With characters like Cabba though, I think Toei was just trying to stick closer to the artstyle which is why hes so skinny in the anime, and unlike a stylized manga, it doesn't convey visual strength and density that being relatively muscular does. Hes just an example of a character with no muscle at all unlike Goku here at 5:22 (which is still an improvement over the SSG design). Its just the legs on characters with skin tight outfits needing some work. Goku can get away with it because his clothes are baggier but Vegeta can't.
Yeah I absolutely agree, I'm glad characters bulked up though in t.o.p. But I've actually planned to do a redesign video just about cabba in the future kinda imagining what he would've looked like perhaps in toriyamas older style because I feel he could've been much more cooler if his design was tweaked in ceratin areas especially the arms
That is a great idea and would be good timing however I have only read a couple of chapters of Bleach so I don't know if I could give a accurate take on his artstyle over the years
@@forgottenrelics1197 it's okay if you don't want to. But if you do want to do it, then picking back where you left off wouldn't be a bad idea. Just my suggestion
Hopefully not because I really like the round chubby style of Dr. Slump and the early dragon ball days too, I was only watching Dr Slump yesterday and thinking that his style of that time is what made the characters so fun and enjoyable to watch
He said many times that he was tired of drawing excessively muscular characters that's why he made all Dragon ball characters look thinner in Dragon Ball Super
Are you referring to when he said he wanted to make Goku not look more macho when talking about the SSG form because besides that I don't recall any interview where he said that. Could you provide a link to what interview he said that?
To be honest over time I've come to like the more refined look to characters in the cell arc and buy but at the same time I definitely know what you mean as I love the fun bouncy look to early dragon ball aswell👍

In short I think Toriyama is just done wanting to draw the series while Toyotaro is very excited to draw them.
But that's just my guess
But yeah I agree with Toyotaro continuing the manga, I actually did a video on him as well comparing his artstyle to young jiji, I encourage to check it out if you enjoy videos like this one!!
I disagree. Young JiiJii does far better when it comes to replicating the Cell arc style.
This got me at first about the new dragon ball movie
3:53 (left and center images) shows his peak was the 23rd Tenkaichi budokai and the saiyan saga
i like Toriyamas old and new Art Style
But yes I might do a review of oda's work one day👍
Which version of Makafushigi Adventure is that at 2:43? It’s very hard to find
To be honest I don't know exactly, at first I thought it might just be an instrumental version but I dont think it is. I selected this track from a 46min long vid originally however I cannot find the original video on youtube.
I've always noticed the small changes, glad somebody else noticed
Yep there are a heap of little things that have changed in his style over time that alot of people miss including me at times haha
@@forgottenrelics1197 do they even print englisb translations of slump anymore?
@@ms.antithesis I'm pretty sure they do still, I was able to still find plenty on ebay by viz, although what I would like is a completed subbed version of the anime but that will probably never come
@@forgottenrelics1197 yea, that'd be cool
The quality of his designs majorly drop when things get to Super, much like the rest of Super's quality.
5:35 "I feel like some of Toriyama's newer characters are kind of hit or miss"... on a frame including Hit. Nice pun there
Buu arc style was the best. It suits dragon ball so well. Even cell and frieza arc are amazing, but buu arc hands down
Buu arc style in the anime was the best, not the manga. His art declined by that time.
@@jasonone8726 yeah. His style in manga was best in the cell arc. But anime, buu arc was peak
@@jasonone8726 yeah. His style in manga was best in the cell arc. But anime, buu arc was peak
6:18 what type of colors is he using?
I like the saiyan saga art style the best for me and that’s the style I love drawing in
I’m surprised I didn’t find u sooner
@@forgottenrelics1197 you should do another video focusing on that series :)
@@Boujonzu Yeah man I was pondering the idea but I didn't know what was left to add to what I had already said in this vid however I thought actually drawing his characters myself in each the respective style throughout the years to give a better visual picture so perhaps I might do a part 2😃
@@forgottenrelics1197 Well considering this vid focused on Dragonball, maybe the other course just focus on his work and evolution in DragonQuest
@@Boujonzu Yes that's a great idea!
i think hits sleekness is to impose like the assassin vibe not a brute but although the ssj blue goku looks really similar to his ssj design
Imo Toriyama had two peaks: one with his older style, during Dr. Slump, and the other during Cell and Bu saga.
What I didn't like in his DBZ art is that he seems to use a videogame character editor with few options: all the human characters look the same, except for the hair.
Well I like the square look
I know I’m late but I gotta say 5:23 the SSJB Goku looks kinda fire 🔥 ngl!!!
Yeah looking back it is kinda a cool take.
now do a video on araki's art style
I love his new style. I love that not every character is bulked out so much. Great video!
Thanks😃
Absolutely right. It deserves more respect. People forgot quickly how influential is.
Love coolers design
Yes defintely one of my favourites from Toriyama
5:49 I want to unsee that RIGHT NOW
He has evolved throughout the years hasn’t he?
Yes his style defintely has
I've always associated toriyama's work with dragon quest and chrono trigger
That Cooler art in thumbnail.. I thought it was made by Naohiro Shintani 😂😂
Haha nah the illustration was done by Toriyama, www.daizex.com/multimedia/images/character_designs/ you can tell also as this design was done in watercolor which Toei never used for designs (well from my knowledge).
DO MORE about Dbz manga
Will do in the future!
WOAH! HE MADE SHALLOT!? A character from a mobile game!?!
Good vid👍
I like every style of every arc of the manga, that's what make them even more peculiar.
For example i'd prefer goku old design instead of making him look like son goten if there was an anim remake of db part
i like his older style
Where it all started
whats the music in the background?
Ost from Dragonball and the final song was Supreme Kai theme American Ost
what about the music that stats 1:00 in?
Sekushii Gyaru Buruma
Next up should be Tite Kubo's artstyle, since the Bleach anime is coming back
That is a great idea and would be good timing however I have only read a couple of chapters of Bleach so I don't know if I could give a accurate take on his artstyle over the years
@@forgottenrelics1197 it's okay if you don't want to. But if you do want to do it, then picking back where you left off wouldn't be a bad idea. Just my suggestion
Am I the only one who loves his Dr slump days art as much or even more than his Dragonball z days?
Hopefully not because I really like the round chubby style of Dr. Slump and the early dragon ball days too, I was only watching Dr Slump yesterday and thinking that his style of that time is what made the characters so fun and enjoyable to watch
I like DBZ and db art more than the new one
Toyoturo handles a lot of the artwork now in the Dbs manga series Toriyama has little involvement just consultations and approval
tbh i loved the old ones gave me more vibes then this new kids character designs
This video does not have enough credit
Cheers man!
His various styles are very nice to see but I have to admit I prefer the Dragonball/Dragonball Z/GT art style
Akira Toriyama's involution rather
He said many times that he was tired of drawing excessively muscular characters that's why he made all Dragon ball characters look thinner in Dragon Ball Super
Are you referring to when he said he wanted to make Goku not look more macho when talking about the SSG form because besides that I don't recall any interview where he said that.
Could you provide a link to what interview he said that?
Aren’t the newer ones from super and not by Toriyama?
Nah they are Toriyamas character designs.
Great video!
Thanks very much!
much prefer his style in dragon ball to dbz, especially late cell and buu saga. it looked way more charming back then.
To be honest over time I've come to like the more refined look to characters in the cell arc and buy but at the same time I definitely know what you mean as I love the fun bouncy look to early dragon ball aswell👍
