    Really enjoy your videos! Apart from the fact that you're building something really cool, like a helicopter, duh!, they are honest and truly educational. You let the viewers know what your knowledge base is and what you know/don't know and what your strenghts and weaknesses are. For anyone thinking of attempting something similar this is invaluable information. Could I do this? What would I need to learn to achieve this? What tools would I need? What sort of problems might I run into? For me at least presented at just the right pace with just the right amount of detail. Looking forward to the rest of your journey and the first flight! Big thumbs up 👍👍

    Hello.
    Thank you for your video, I would just mention that you probably should not use acetone to mix in your baby powder as acetone permanently will dull your glossy paint/surface and can ruin/melt your plastic parts. Acetone is used to matte down surfaces before painting and sometimes used to glue plastic parts together. I think people mostly use IPA for this mix, but you should really get some expert view on this if parts are sensitive.

    When trying to combined models did you use the reference dots on the scans. I know when I did it with another scanner it was critical to aligning models. Also simplifying the models as much as possible. The other thing is memory is king. 16 GB is minimal but if you can upgrade a pc to 32 gb it will work better. Ideally I would go for 64 to 128. I don’t think the new Apple computers can be upgraded. Just some thoughts. Also don’t need to do the computation work on the same computer you use for data collection.

    • @TheOkayestEngineer
      @TheOkayestEngineer  13 днів тому +1

      @@TSSolutionsPro I tried all the ways. And the alignment actually was really good! It just errored out when trying to make the point cloud.
      I also didn’t realize you could use a different computer to post process. Makes sense but didn’t cross my mind. That is a huge plus! Thanks for pointing it out.
      For now my MacBook works “good enough” but I’ll definitely keep this in mind as I look for a new computer in the future

    Do you think that the ripples in the scan may be interference from the 60Hz ambient lighting? Probably not but something to think about. I know using florescent or LED lighting will sometimes do wonky things. Just a shot in the dark, pun intended. Lol. I love the videos man, keep em coming, I'm learning a lot.

    For editing stl files try SketchUp, that will load an stl file no problem, and if there are holes in the mesh, scale the stl file by 10 or 100 in 3dbuilder, then load the stl in SkechUp and scale down the scale you did enlarge it. Then you can create planes and dxf or dwg files for your cad program.

  • @spoon1272
    @spoon1272 13 днів тому

    You use the other side of the calibrating plate to do the White Balance, not the one with the dots on.
    Also it depends on the software that you are using if you can alter STL files. SketchUp can.
    Do you think that someone who has just got a scanner should do a 'tutorial' on how to use it best. I have had no problems with putting multiple projects together.
    Other than the above, nice vid.

    • @TheOkayestEngineer
      @TheOkayestEngineer  13 днів тому +1

      @@spoon1272 I’m pretty sure is mentioned that the issue I was having very well could have been me…. Sometimes there is value in someone doing a review of something with no prior experience. It’s a pretty good indicator of how easy it is to jump into.
      Have you ever taken a college course with a PHD professor who is at the university to do research? They often “forget” what it’s like to be introduced to the subject.
      I feel like it was probably the “Okayest” review by an “Okayest engineer” so the content matches the channel pretty well. Haha.

      @@TheOkayestEngineer I totally understand where you are coming from with regards to showing how a scanner is used by someone new. I am a newbie to it as well. Ratter than say its a 'tutorial' I would have said its 'how I went about it, being new to scanning'
      The scanner is good for object of your size that you scanned and the software is great. But its not particularly good at going small objects. Also the spray that you mentioned is really good.

    • @TheOkayestEngineer
      @TheOkayestEngineer  13 днів тому

      @@lawrencemanning I don’t really have a way to check. I’ve been thinking about this for a while. Maybe I machine a part from foam, scan it, and compare it back to cad.
      The accuracy also depends on how careful you are with the scanning process as well. It can be very clunky.

    • @lawrencemanning
      @lawrencemanning 13 днів тому

      @ the part you were scanning in the video looked like it has parallel edges? Can you find a way to measure the maximum width across two parallel edges? Even the diameter of the round piece would do to start with, though it’s not very big.
      Anyway awesome stuff! I wish o had a project to justify the expense of getting a 3D scanner as they look very useful, though also a tad frustrating!

    Good video..the schweizer 300 I fly, full size, not RC, has an upgraded LED landing light and it made a huge difference. Second, if you register this aircraft with FAA you’re going to need a supplemental type flight certificate because you are making changes outside the approved aircraft flight certificate. For example, if you own a R44 Robinson it will have a type certificate based on its approved design. If you were to add a spray boom because you want to be an ag-pilot the owner needs to obtain a supplemental type flight certificate because he/she added something that is outside of the original approved design for that R44. If you’re considering classifying it has an experimental, check into the rules and regs..you may be okay. Get yourself the 2025 edition FAR/AIM manual..it will have all the info you need. Good Luck with everything and Go Bucks!!

      @@No4murasame dude, you’re obviously not educated with experimental aircraft. For it to be airworthy, and receive an airworthiness certificate, regardless if it’s amateur built or not..he will have to submit certain documents to receive, most likely, a special airworthy certificate. The FAA will have a list of those documents needed, which can be found in the FAR/AIM manual. And because changes were made to the original aircraft design, the FAA may issue a supplemental type certificate.

    • @tommyk1073
      @tommyk1073 13 днів тому

      @ I understand that, but in order to fly the helicopter he will be required to have an airworthiness certificate..and I believe the FAA will issue special airworthiness certificates for experimental aircraft. But when changes are made to an aircraft, the operational limitations for the helicopter may have been changed too, and it’s best to consult the FAR/ AIM manual.

    • @TheOkayestEngineer

      @@tommyk1073 my understanding is that any modifications after the original build would require another review. But there are no requirements to “stick to the plans” defined by the manufacturer.
