That was actually the first energetic I ever made, when I was about 10yr old. Nobody showed me how and I didn't realize it was even that simple, what I did was I heated a saturated iodine tincture (it was literally a pile of crystals in a little rubbing alcohol) in one container, and some household ammonia in a larger container. I had some IV tubing, I guess I got from when I got my tonsils out, had that held into a hole in the lids of the containers with puddy, then I had two funnels over a third container one would a coffee filter much like a normal filtration, the other one upside down over the top of the first with the IV tubing coming in through the hole. Somewhere I got it in my head that the two had to react in the gas state and I thought I had the condensed the ammonia, also my iodine was contaminated from the potassium salt I got it from so that helps separate that as well. Anyway I ended up with a coffee filter full of large damp crystal like chunks of this stuff. I spread it out on a steal plate to dry, and as it dried those Crystal like chunks would spontaneously explode causing this 10 lb steel plate to hop!!!! That scares the heck out of me thinking how big it would be if that whole fist size lot went off at once!! So I washed it down the drain, I didn't realize those chunks wouldn't dissolve. Later that night you could hear popping and banging from the pipes and sewer system and the drain pipes in the house were shaking with purple smoke coming out of the drain. That scared both my parents and my neighbors! I never told them what I did. That's what I learned how sensitive this stuff was! it will literally explode from a crystal cracking as it dries! I haven't made any since(45yr) but I'm considering it now after seeing it's effects on mosquitoes😅
I made it using a strong elemental iodine solution in water, dropped through 28% NH4OH. The precipitate is the product. I washed it three times with water, then let it dry. My brother walked by, creating air current which set it off.
My father told me about making NI3 when he was a teenager, in the late 1940s. He'd soak a few drops into sugar cubes, line them up on the windowsill and wait for flies to land on them.... He also spread some on the blackboard at school. Later in life, he was an industrial chemist and metallurgist.
Our standard school prank was off the shelf ammonia mixed with iodine powder. After 3 days, wash and store the crystal residue in IPA. Sprinkle the slurry around the floor outside the staff-room, the alcohol evaporates; then watch from a safe distance.

Soo... as an eager young 1st year chem student, I decided that I needed to make NI3 myself. Sensibly, I did this on some concrete outside. Needless to say, once it dried it exploded with a satisfying pop. When I thought that everything had popped, I went back inside. A little later, I heard a "POP" from outside... On investigation, I found several legs of a cockroach....
The mosquito trap reminded me of one story, chemist students made nitrogen triiodide and dripped it onto whatman paper and scattered bread crumbs, then went into another room to drink vodka, after an hour and a half, popping noises were heard in the kitchen - these were cockroaches being blown up in a miniature minefield😆
The powder probably isn't dry enough in many of your tests so it is not sensitive to impact for quite a lot of time, from my experience their sensitivity is lowered quite a bit when wet.
My taugts too since i did experience similar problems first time i made it long time ago from ammonia concentrated and rinsed it with water in a melitta filter, whan i was a kid, id there where traces of water left i just would like to play... Another thing is that the iodine chrystals need to fully dissolved if one use th eold methods i did, if therer are iodine granulates left it will affect the outcommin result even if it is dry. (At least that is my theory based on my own experiment back in the days, but i am open for criticism if somebody more skilled than me hawe other theories).
In order to oxidatively displace iodine from iodide, dilute sulfuric acid should be used instead of concentrated hydrochloric acid, otherwise this will also be oxidized. The resulting chlorine forms an interhalogen with iodine, which contaminates iodine as the end product and produces even more explosive nitrogen trichloride with ammonia. Since iodine is so poorly soluble in water, it hardly reacts with the ammonia solution. It should first be dissolved in iodide solution (also freely available commercially as Lugol's solution). This keeps the iodine in solution and makes it more available for many reactions. Nevertheless, the preparation of nitrogen triiodide should of course only be carried out in a professional setting; for private individuals this would be illegal in many countries.
You can also make nitrogen triiodide using potassium iodate and two other chemicals it forms in seconds no need for elemental iodine at all just the ion.
resublimed iodine works better. this stuff can be dangerous in big quantities but safe if wet. I used to put it in gaps on door handles or hinges with a mini paintbrush. on the toaster lever was fun too it used to pop around the same as an xmas cracker, so it was perfect for practical joke use. it's when random bits on the floor get stepped on days or weeks later. 😅
You should have a stronger warning against making NI3 and the whole series of N- halogenids. I have never made more than a pea sized amount at once, but I remember my highschool science teacher telling us about some earlier pupils, stealing a large bottle of iodine and making a large heap of it. (Drying with ethanol). Fortunately it was done in the school lab and a teacher happened to come by before the ethanol had totally evaporated. They had made a dangerous amount of it. Fortunately it's not spontaneously decomposing in a detonation except as dry crystals. An extra warning should be made against making Hg-fulminate and TATP. All the mentioned compounds can easily be made by accident if you're working with certain chemicals!
The best alpha source that you can legally own in most jurisdictions is a Po-210 anti-static brush cartridge. They have very short half-life so they must be bought new, but they're far more energetic and active than most other legal sources.
if you isolated a single molecule of this, would it still touch off? if it did, it would leave singlet iodine and singlet nitrogen hanging around. is it even possible to isolate a single molecule? i know some pumps can get way down there with gases... energetics is the best part of chem lol
It would be very hard to insulate a single molecule of anything and especially of this but if somebody somehow managed to do that I think that it could still explode just from the intermolecular strain

Elemental iodine is toxic. The stuff used for disinfection is something called povidone-iodine which is a polymer with a small amount of iodine in its structure which is not harmful, but ingesting elemental iodine or iodides in large quantities can completely screw up your tryroid
