In this video I extract cinnamaldehyde from cinnamon and turn it into benzaldehyde to make a semi-legal Dr.Pepper while my lab becomes one with cinnamon powder.
Also, it turns out that my tastebuds are retarded because almost everyone in the comments says that Dr.Pepper does not taste like cherry, sorry for the mistake.

My very original counterfit Dr.Pepper recipe:
Ingredients:
100ml of water
21g of sugar
30mg of caffeine (optional)
A few ml of vanilla flavoring
10ml of lemon juice or a few grams of citric acid
0,5 ml of benzaldehyde
200ml (or more) of carbonated water
Dark brown food coloring
Mix all the ingredients together except the carbonated water and shake them to make sure that everything is dissolved, then add the carbonated water and enjoy.

Thank you all very much for watching!
It tastes like cherry cough syrup to me to ! Always has.. 😅

I came down here for this comment
The fact that tar was mentioned E&F would definitely be proud

For food-grade stuff, just use olive oil (or even canola oil) instead of grease. Works just as well, and doesn’t taste of gasoline!
Coconut oil is always nice in anything sweet.
What about petroleum jelly (Vaseline)?
@@LoveClassicMusic0205Delicious!
@@LoveClassicMusic0205 You're going to drink Dr. Pepper, not fuck him!
refined coconut butter works best, it has no smell nor taste, is food grade and tolerates heat decently... It`s a great cutting lubricant for machine operations in steel and alu... Virgin coconut butter also works, and it smells lovely, but it is more expensive, so as an industrial lubricant, it`s more appropriate in refined variant...
Its currently 5:12am where im at and cant fall asleep so now im watching how to make benzaldehyde
I think we've all been there. The reason behind wanting to make benzaldehyde is what separates them and us
@@4b5urd. Heh heh heh 😏
Now you just need to get denatonium benzoate, lemon, lime, antifreeze, raw fish gut, fermented piss, and you'll have everything you need to make authentic Mountain Dew.
More legal than authentic coca cola
Don’t forget the brominated vegetable oil. It gives it that nice stomach ache taste on the end and will help put out any fires that may break out while cooking it up
@@Walkeranz And kill your thyroid all at the same time!
I know that the Dew has a chemical that is used in flame retardant. is that the denatonium benzoate?
@@jed-henrywitkowski6470 no, denatonium benzoate is a chemical used as a huffing deterrent because it's so incredibly bitter and unpalatable
Dr pepper is actually not a cherry soda. It has 23 different ingredients and was never ment to be cherry flavored.
I was gonna say this considering there's literally a Cherry Dr Pepper flavor you can buy. But, foreign versions may have different flavors so eh.
In Texas the folk knowledge is that the original formula contained prune juice, imparting the fruity notes.
Cherry dr pepper just has extra benzaldehyde
To me at least Dr Pepper tastes extremley similar to amaretto = benzaldehyde. However there are also some other flavors in there I bet but that one specific taste is what stands out the most in Dr Pepper.
Here in Texas, the home of Dr pepper, we do drink quite a lot of that. When I hear somebody mention "soda" or "pop", common generic names for soft drinks, I think of Dr pepper. Not Coke not Pepsi not Fanta.. Dr pepper.
Yep, in Texas if you ask for a soda and someone comes back without a Dr Pepper it’s a sad day
Dr Pepper isn't cherry flavored. This is an easy mistake to make, because it's flavor comes from a cousin of the cherry: The Plum. Specifically the dried version: Prune.
It's carbonated prune juice. (Or was until they stopped using fruit)
No surprise people get this wrong; "D.R. Pepper, so misunderstood!"
Oh wow, HEB sells these sugar free sweetened drinks and the cherry flavor tastes so close to the way DR.Pepper tasted when I was little.
this is a myth/rumor from the 1930's. it's a unique blend of 23 flavors, designed to taste the way a local waco soda fountain smelled
There is dr pepper cheery, tho
I've never liked cherry and I love dr pepper, there is no resemblance of cherry
Dr Pepper is not "just a cherry soda" brother, it is actually a mix of a bunch of artificial fruit flavors, even has some vanilla in it i believe...i mean, the packaging says "23 flavors" after all 😉
I thought it was a cola drink with a bunch of additional flavours...? I'm not 100% sure, but I think so, though it's ofc nbd.
Anyway, cheers o/
@@mookinbabysealfurmittens it is not cola based, you can actually take a tour at their first factory in Texas and while there you get to make your own soda and in the process they explain it's got a lot of flavors, been a while so I'm having trouble remembering all of what they said but it isn't a cola based interestingly enough.
Sorry for my ignorance but what is "ofc rbd?"
@@jacobrjager Very cool, and surprising! Thanks :)
Oh, ofc= of course, nbd= no big deal. Cheers!
The original had codeine in it
That's why the logo had 10-2-4 on it
Pretty much a cola + southern comfort+ benzaldehyde=dr pepper
we did a lab in my class recently where we made cinnamon from benzaldehyde so it's cool to see the inverse here. Atleast I think we made cinnamon, wasn't allowed to taste it sadly
For future experiments to mix cinnamon with water you need 2:1 cinnamon:boiling water. Ad water to cinnamon (not other way around), stir to make paste then ad rest of the water. For those who love hot chocolate: applies to raw cacao powder too (btw it's much more healthier and rich than heavily processed cocoa powder) 👍 Happy holidays 🎄
as a kid we frequently had visitors from the US, Dr Pepper is what I understand as „the taste of freedom“ because Coke has been around for a long time.
there are recipes for cooking with it out there, I hope you get to taste Coke Chicken at least once in your lifetime!

Oh the challenge escalated
This is from John Green video.
"The thing you have to understand about Dr. Pepper Is that Dr. Pepper was invented by Charles Alderton who was a chemist.
That’s essential to understanding what makes Dr. Pepper interesting. It’s the product of a chemist.
And the chemist wasn’t trying to make a soda that tasted like lemon lime or like citrus. He was trying to make a soda that tasted like the soda fountain at the Waco pharmacy smelled. He wanted it in its essence to be artificial."
Awesome to see more goofy chemistry content!
Super nicely recorded and edited, good stuff :)
Dr.Pepper is also very good with Dark Rums, like black strap molasses rum. If you are old enough to drink in your area, of course.

I remember when I was a kid, my mom used to bake cakes, pies and all kinds of desserts. She had a collection of extracts such as vanilla extract, almond extract etc… I’ve always been a label reader. And imitation almond extract was just Benzaldehyde. Only ingredient in the bottle. I wonder if it still is? That would be a good source for amateur chemists.
Generally it’s mixed with water and alcohol, but pretty easy to get rid of those. That said, possessing a decent amount of benzaldehyde may get you in trouble if someone complains about your lab (especially if you have other potential meth precursors). Police aren’t exactly known for their knowledge of chemistry beyond “these ones are on the bad list.”
Yup, at least where im at almond extract is is still alcohol and bezaldehyde (:
Super! Thank you very much!
Ask Polish Santa Klaus for a coffee grinder for christmas. That would solve most of the making chunks into a powder problems you experienced in the past. And just going from the taste, ground cinnamon has definitely less aroma than freshly ground stuff. Could account for some of that yield.
Also:
>no nasty chemicals please :(
>dishsoap in first step
>engine grease
Bratan, I'm proud of you.
While the grease was a bad idea, dish soap is safe (even if some of it managed to get through all the other processing steps.)
dish soap is now toxic, they took out triclosan then put in carcinogens and toxic chemicals... very odd
I always enjoy "food-grade" chemistry! Would love to see more

I think you would benefit from a soxhlet extractor for these types of extractions.
I'm gonna mix a bit of this, bit of that.... then drink it.
Isn't that how Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde started out?! 🤣
Dr Pepper and Mr Pibb do have an eerie similarity to Jekyll and Hyde. Those industrial chemists could use some system of third party tasters I guess
Nurdrage gave you a shout out in his latest video. Congrats!
In grad school 40 years ago, we did a case history on Dr. Pepper. We found that most people thought it had a cherry flavor. In fact, there was no cherry in the drink, but prunes were a key ingredient.
Hey brother! I'm over here in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S and this B M supply, how are they with sending glassware to another country and are they dependable? Because I've made the mistake twice before ordering out of country only to finally receive my glassware totally shattered, and then the other order I never received! So I'm a bit skittish, I love you're channel, it has helped me on occasion. Please keep it going!✌️👍👍👍
Teflon tape works pretty well as an inert joint grease substitute...
Steam distillation of cinnamon isn't recommended its a mucilage an will congel into a solid mass
Thus poses a significant risk of clogging your Distillation setup and exploding from the pressure!
Just look online regarding percolating Cinnamon and the dangers it presents.
Precursors are the bane of chemists
You should always filter off the CaCl2 before start heating. Heat reverses the hydrate formation!
The easiest way to extract cinnamaldehyde from cinnamon bark is using ethanol.
Getting cheap vodka is just fine for this.
Excuse me, I have some questions.
1) How did you avoid Cannizzaro's reaction of cinnamon aldehyde in pH alkaline?
2) How did you avoid the transformation of aromatic compounds to phenols (yellow, orange colour) in pH alkaline? Also in presence of CO2 a second chain is added.
3) If you produce acetaldehyde in alkaline solution, how did you eliminate C6H3(CH3)3?
4) During the boiling the cinnamon powder adsorbs water and it increases its volume 4 times. Also the aromatic compounds are 7-10% in weight. The oil has about the same density of water, depends by temperature. So you can choice the separation method.
Why did you use bisulfate way? The next step is a Na2CO3 solution anyway.
I really like the style of these videos. They remind me of NileRed. KeepUp the Work!
He's definitely mimicking his speaking style.
Thanks!
Man... thank you very much!

Funny and informative video! Ersatz ginger beer might be an interesting project
Did you use actual cinnamin for this or cassia? I would think Cassia would work better, and that looks like what was used, but I'm just curious.
Please make a video how to make methadone.
It’s so weird hearing that song without randomly changing in sound quality.
Nile red colab would go crazy
Could we use a soxhlet extractor for extraction better? I'm thinking yes
At 7:47 you show a panel with the equillibrium. The arrow in the middle however is a resonance arrow. It is only a minor mistake bc the panel still conveys the same message but a equillibrium arrow would be more proffesional

i think you should try to extract the benzaldehyde with an organic solvent to improve the yield
You earned a sub from me purely by appreciating Dr. Pepper.
(Also cool synth i guess 😏)
Also everything up to the 5 minute mark is so relatable to me... "Impromptu flamethrowers, clogged spray bottles, and mold juice" could be the title of my memoir

Did you use common or true (ceylon) cinamon sticks?
Anyone else catch that? 2:02 on the BM Wholesale page, the "Recent Products" listed on the side?! XD
1:23 “NUT” 🌰
You only had to grind the cinammon with an electric coffee grinder or similar because the cinammon powder has a lot of impurities
You need a form of filter on the inlet side of the vacuum pump, those chemicals could kill the seals
I'm always wondering... I'm in the EU, but chemical suppliers don't sell the fun stuff to individuals in my country... bm-chemicals does ship here though, cuz we're supposed to have a free market so how can I know what I can or cannot buy from that Polish website...
Can make a vid about extracting cellulose from pistache shells?
Doctor Pepper is cherry flavored? Why does Cherry-Doctor Pepper taste so different then? I thought it was prune flavored.
I recently made cinnamic acid from benzaldehyde and malonic acid in a uni organic chem course. To me benzaldehyde smells like marzipan.
Everyone seems to have a different perception of its smell and taste, to me it smells very strongly of cherry
@@Amateur.Chemistry so I brought a can of Dr. Pepper and while I can still recognise the smell as benzaldehyde, it reminds me of cherry in this context.
It's weird.
Cinnamon is a mucilaginous producing substance and if not distilled carefully can clog adapters and result in a dangerous explosion, this is why cinnamon should never be put in a coffee Percholator, it will explode from the build up pressure.
The mucilaginous property of this bark makes it very annoying to work with when doing extractions.
Did you tried making first an alcoolic extract?
Should try to make benzaldehyde from toluene. Because Cinnamon bark contains benzaldehyde and cinnamaldehyde, which needs fraction distillation to separate them.
Its big brain time indeed
What is that black sheet you used to cover your table? Is it resistance to chemical stuffs?
Looks like like some kind of paper, like Nilered uses in his videos
@@Beidoss oh, but is it really paper? It looks really thick though
Yeah, its just some black background paper, it is so thick that it kind of resembles cardboard
@@Amateur.Chemistry oh ok, thank you.
Nice video though, you made me want to turn my room into a lab and… yeah
Precursor to what?!
We use to do this in highschool chemistry class
Sheesh, when was benzaldehyde put on the watch list? Used to be a very common chemical, which after all was oil of bitter almond (cyanide removed).
I beleive you are confused with the other soda cheerwine. That is supposed to taste like cherries.
2:40 amateur question here, please forgive my ignorance: about the diagram of the cinnamaldehyde molecule: why is there just one hydrogen noted at the end of the carbon chain? Is it because that last carbon is missing 3 of its 4 covalent bonds so one H must be written otherwise convention would mean that 3 H atoms would be attached to that last carbon?
Yes, that's exactly it. Any vertex or end represents a carbon atom unless specified otherwise.
@@goodmaro thanks for confirming that!
I also have the same dish washing liquid as you!
Dr pepper is a bit more complex than a simple benzaldehyde soda. I have tried almond extract with my soda stream and I still prefer Dr pepper or something even better, like Pibb Extra. Still a great video 😄 I'd love to see one about naringin, the primary grapefruit bitter.
naringin and or naringenin is a great terpene that can be used to epigenetically modify and correct errors in mutation sites of DNA(like many terpenes can) during the transcription phase of rna, with naringin, it's specific to Polycystic Kidney Disease.
i wonder if the sodas like Squirt and the grapefriut sodas have it ? 🤔
I've been trying coke and almond essence (benzaldehyde). It's as close to dr pepper as one can get super easy (dr pepper is rare and expensive here)
Dr Pepper had a wonderful, subtle taste when I was a kid. Without advertisement, they changed it. I won't drink it now. But it used to be absolutely wonderful. I'd pay $10 per bottle if they brought back the original.
It's still great

Dr. Pepper is the elixir of the Heavens. Great job!
The nectar of the gods*
Several decades ago, the ingredients listed on a bottle of Dr. Pepper included prune juice. Also, on a bottle of Ruby Red Squirt the ingredients included wood rosin. Not hearsay, but seen with my very own eyes. So the labels may change over time, maybe because of politics, but people may be wondering if the actual recipe changes as well.
LOL the DEA is going to go find you now!
Indeed not very effective, but nevertheless a nice and simple pathway with easy to get components, which I have never seen before. 👍
Benzaldehyde smells like bitter almonds and marcipan, but not like cherries. It gets a rose-like scent if you dilute it absolute ethanol.
Can you synthesize ethyl valerate and make a sparkling green apple soda?
Mfw I have a bottle of sodium valerate and nothing to do with it... Thanks for the tip
Dr Pepper was my soda of choice since I was a kid. M'lady and I used to drink a lot of soda when we were first together, but we cut it out some years ago and started drinking the sparkling waters instead (i.e. La Croix and its knock-offs) and then our neighbor turned us on to the Sodastream which makes it easy to just make your own soda water at home. After about a year of drinking a bunch of homemade soda I've resigned to just drinking plain water now. Sugar is bad for you in so many ways!
Ever hear of bitter almond oil and steam distillation? Just make sure not to go organic or you may end up with cyanosis.
Always heard that Dr. Pepper contained prune juice, perhaps this is how it gets it's darkened color.
It’s not cherry flavored. Says on the can it’s 23 different flavors make its distinct taste.
It used to taste so much better, but here in the UK we've ruined so many soft drinks due to the nanny states sugar taxes on many drinks, so most changed how they were made. Once again, normal weighted people, who can eat and drink in moderation, as part of a healthy diet, get things made worse to try and stop people getting diabetes and obesity.
Doing a S.A.L.L.E would work fine and not introduce any chemicals except sodium chloride which would only dissolve in the water causing the remaining oil to crash out.
This is a common practice called salting out
Dr Pepper is fire bro
Thank you, this was the final thing I needed to rebuild the important technologies of the world after the apocalypse.
I'll be in my bunker now. Someone please let me know when the zombies are gone.
I'm gonna tell you my story: I was synthesising cynnameldyhyde and i wondered how reagents smell so I smelled benzaldehyde and it smelled actually good but then i smelled acetaldehyde and it was irritating i checked on a label and it turned out to be dangerous, later I discovered that it is what causes hangover after drinking too much percentage drinks, I don't recommend anyone to replicate me.
I really had hangover after that tho
It's supposed to be a "spice" taste, but everyone's taste buds are different.
Yeah, I heard people saying that it tastes like marzipan, almonds, cherry and some other things, it's really fascinating how everyone perceives its taste differently
Yes, I taste a mixture of flavors as well, but the main thing is just the crispness of the taste.@@Amateur.Chemistry
