32. EASY Stern Gland Greaser Packing

  • Being aware of various methods to repack the stern gland greaser, I am going to show you what I regard as the simplest way to do it.
    An explanation of what the stern gland greaser does, is given towards the end of the video. Basically, the propeller shaft passes through a brass tube, which is packed with overlapping coils of graphite impregnated rope, compressed around the shaft by a collar. The stern gland greaser, when screwed down, forces water resistant grease into the stern gland to keep it lubricated and sealed, to prevent water ingress into the boat. It should be tightened regularly, as part of routine maintenance.

    My greaser was in the same place as yours and I got fed up with bending down in the engine bay to grease it.. I bought a length of the pipe from whilton marina and a couple of fittings and moved it up on deck by the throttle control. In fact you can put it anywhere you like.. one of the best things in ever did.. now I give it a slight turn every couple of hours while cruising and fill it without having to grovel about with my arse in the air...

      Hi Robert, I must say I’ve not found it too much of a bother. My original deck board over the engine had been cut in half (before I bought the boat), making access a lot easier than having to move a humongous board. I’m glad you’ve found an easy way that suits you better. Cheers

    I was fascinated, Alan, by the 19th Century-looking stern gland greaser. Your explanation of the way you repack it is so clear and logical, it would certainly be of help to other narrowboaters. I was impressed by how little mess and fuss was involved, seeing the potential for a frustrating and messy job. Thank you for an informative video.

    Thanks for the video. I noticed some water underneath the stern gland in bulkhead for first time since been on the move today...I always adjust the greaser to tighten it up each morning. Guessed it may have been empty...was pretty much so. I was having difficulty with the plunger too... seems a little c-clip was missing to hold the threaded rod in place on it, so not easy to fill it... I knew there was a problem, the chap in boat next to mine resolved with a c-clip, he had a tray of them.. I know what to look for next time now. Cheers!

    Alan, try a slightly different way. Having unscrewed the greaser from the boat, place it in the container of grease with the barrel covering the hole in the plastic disc and exert slight downward pressure. Then turn the greaser handle anti clockwise. As the plunger comes up inside the barrel it will suck the grease into the barrel. Doing it this way creates a bit less mess, but more importantly, avoids introducing air into the barrel which will then sometimes get delivered to the stern tube instead of the grease that you really want there. It's important not to put too much downward pressure on the plastic disk as you don't want the grease to be forced up the sides of the disk. Once you have made a start, the vacuum created by raising the plunger will keep it locked onto the plastic disk. Hope that helps.

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  5 років тому

      Thanks David for that comprehensive advice. I have tried a method which involves manually loading the grease into the barrel and then turning the greaser handle back which pulls it in and then repeating that, but it didn’t work for me, even though I’ve seen it demonstrated. Turning my greaser handle fully back takes a long while to do, so will be laborious but I will definitely try it next time. Cheers. Alan

    • @paulstephenson5220
      @paulstephenson5220 5 років тому +1

      Both ways you will get air in the grease which compresses and either uses the greasing force and reduces flow or allows the compresses air to continue forcing grease out into the gland long after you think its stopped, so over greasing. Only way to stop that is bin the plastic disk in the grease tube as you wont get a great vacuum seal against it. Submerge the nose of the cylinder into the grease and unscrew the piston all the way keeping it in the grease the whole time. Pop it back on the mount and then clean it up. Its a little messier but you wont get air in it which is the main thing. Love these greasers. Ancient technology still going well and wont be changed for sure.

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture

      Hi Paul. Sorry but re-packing the stern gland is not a job I've tackled. I believe it is usual to tighten the gland nuts every year (I've just done mine), you may wish to look into that and research how to repack, there is a certain way of cutting the packing rings, so the joins are staggered. It might be worthwhile getting someone to do it for you. Cheers Alan
