19. Narrowboat Water Tank Clean
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 чер 2024
- One of the recommendations from the surveyor when I purchased my boat was to clean the water tank, as this was unlikely to have been done since the boat was built in 2005. Another recommendation was to get the boat blacked, which I did in July 2018 and a link to that video is given below.
After I returned from getting the boat blacked, I tackled the water tank, a job I was not looking forward to. See me opening, draining, scraping, brushing, cleaning, treating, coating and re-filling the water tank during one of the hottest months on record!

What a monumental task! Wow.
It was not something I was looking forward to but was lucky with the hot weather to dry the tank out.
That was a job that needed doing and I admire you patience in doing the job properly
Thanks Martin, it was an arduous task and not one I looked forward to.
That brings back memories of building GRP tanks for custom sailboats. I won't go so far as to label them fond memories. You did a fantastic job on a dirty, unpleasant task.
Thank you, your comment is very much appreciated. I wasn't looking forward to doing it but felt it had to be done having been recommended by the surveyor.
Epic! What you needed Alan was a Victorian urchin to climb onto the tank for you, so you didn't have to stretch.
Brilliant stuff.
I was told by my surveyor, to put my girlfriend down there! Needless to say we're not together any more. Cheers
Nice video. FYI.. Hole punches made for leather work best on gasket material.
Many thanks for that advice, I do have a hole punch somewhere but not sure that it would have punched the sizes needed. Cheers
You are amazing Alan. Take care of yourself
Many thanks Bob and you.
Well that wasn’t a 5 minute job Alan. A lot of effort pays off. Hopefully do you for a good while before the next clean out. I think Stainless Steel takes some beating. Even made me feel thirsty watching that one. Well done. Time to put the kettle on and settle in with your next video. 👍
Well done Alan.
You did a very complete and thorough job Alan, well done you. It just goes to show, boat owners can accomplish most maintenance tasks on their boats and save themselves hundreds, if not thousands of dollars/pounds in the process. In addition, I think there is a certain amount of pride and satisfaction in doing this, one gets to know their boat rather intimately, knowing just where everything lives.
Hi Michael, I fully agree, working on the boat makes one better acquainted with it and it then feels more homely. I think it's important to undersand, as best one can, how the boat functions. The surveyor advised me to clean the water tank and so I did it. Cheers
Nicely done!
Thank you for making this vlog!
One of my very first when I started vlogging, glad you found it of use. I wouldn't use Fertan again, I now use Vactan but other makes are available.
Well done😁👍👏👏👏
well done
Looks fantastic!
Thanks very much Lloyd
Epic! A good job well done, a pat on the back is well deserved.
Many thanks Paul, that was done during a very hot July. Cheers
Excellent video - your advice will be fully utilised! Thanks.
PhantomUAV Thanks very much, glad you found it of use. Cheers
Proud of you Alan. What a monumental task that was, but such a rewarding job. Job well done.
Many thanks Anthony, it was a heavy going task but one recommended by my surveyor so I got on and did it. Cheers

Thoroughly informative! You’ll feel a lot better now with that job cleaned up.
Many thanks, yes was good to get it out the way and know the water supply is clean but it’s not used for drinking.
A grand job sir! Well done.
Many thanks.
A very interesting and well told story, What a job!
Thanks Keith. Certainly one I wasn’t looking forward to. Lucky with the weather, allowing it to dry out quickly.
A job very well done Alan
Thanks very much John, it wasn’t a job I looked forward to but as it was suggested by the surveyor, I did it.
excellent video, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers
Not a pleasant job, but had to be done. Full marks for doing it properly.
Many thanks, I did my best. Cheers
Well done,what a big job that was!🙂👍👏👏👏
Many thanks Susan, it was a dirty unpleasant job in the heat of summer. Thanks for watching.
I’ve been putting off cleaning the integral tanks on my boat. This is a useful preview. Thankfully you had really good access.
I'm glad you found it useful and hope you get on well with this most unwelcome task. All the best.
I did like and subscribed. If I ever end up on the cut this is the kind of thing I would love to help others with!
mattelderca Thanks for subscribing 👍
Really interesting and informative, thanks Alan, and well-filmed and edited, as always. My iPad is still ringing with every hammer blow after the dramatic footage of you removing the cover! A messy, awkward and laborious job, but you must have felt much satisfaction in completing it so thoroughly with such patience and perseverance. Phil
That's very kind of you to say Phil, it was the first major job I did on the boat, as recommended by my surveyor. I was lucky the weather was hot, to help it dry out. All the best
Exalent job, reminds of tank dividing when I was in the m/n cleaning out freshwater tanks we used cement wash
Thanks Roy, I’m surprised about the cement wash!
Bit naughty for the wild life in and around canal boats?.but it does clan most stuff 😎😎
That was a horrible job, so well done for being so thorough in the hot weather. As the tank cover was so well sealed, I wonder how the surveyor knew it needed doing?
Thanks David. I think for the age of the boat 2005, the surveyor thought it unlikely it would have ever been done, so was worth doing, so I took his advice and did it.
Your explanations, patience, and determination made this video interesting and enjoyable. Thank you!
Thank you so much Grace x
What a difference! Very evident why it was necessary but what a job! Hope you don’t have to do that very often😳
Hi Debbie. I don’t plan to. It had probably never been done since new in 2005.
Use Teflon seal on bolts of water tank !
hi my friend what a lovely vlog and well done looked very hard work but will be 22 years before it needs doing again and you explain everything so everyone can under stand so thanks for that nice to see someone retiring and not sitting on bum waiting for god if you keep busy people leave to ripe old age sit on bum people die after 365 days so keep up great vlogs how many does your fuel tank hold thanks again and stay safe
Hi Ncholas, many thanks, your comment is much appreciated. I did it during a very hot period, which made the task worse. My fuel tank holds 42 gallons, 190 litres. Cheers
That was brilliant. I'm joining this world soon and intend to do most of my own maintenance, it helps to watch videos like this. If you don't mind me asking what brand of sealant tape did you use at the end?
Thanks Bryan. Glad you found the video useful. I bought the sealant tape from Midland Chandlers. They sell it by the metre off a huge roll, so I wouldn’t know the brand, sorry.
Hey, no problem, I'll have a look on the big shop sites. I'll also look at the Midland Chandlers online shop.
A siphon would help !
Nice job, how did the water test afterwards?
Thanks Geoff. I don’t drink the water, I only use it for washing / showering. I would be happy to use it if boiled. The only issue was that when the water was heated, there was a bit of a smell. I treated the water/tank a couple of times and the smell has now gone away.
Hi, just found your channel....very nice videos to watch!......Just to be nosy....are you both liveaboards or just leaving the boat at a Marina? The boat looks in good nick, how long is she....?....Cheers🍷🍷
Thanks Steve. I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. I’m mostly a liveaboard. The boat is 45ft long and has been reasonably well looked after but there’s still much to be done with the paintwork.
Vinegar helps with rust!
not as much as rust convertor!
Great job one that we have done a few times great to see it all clean at the end your boat looks a lot like our boat by any chance was it built by dav at black country narrow boats
Hi Linda, thanks for your comment. Spot on, it is a 2005 Black Country Narrowboat. There was another here in the marina, nearly identical but without the pullman dinette. He had had the shower room professionally modified to fit a standard sized shower tray. It was sold a couple of years ago.
Hi our boat was built 2006 we are Northampton Stoke Bruerne bottom lock River tove great little boats our boats 45 foot made by on of the best welders saddle dav has past away our next job is repainting the roof taken care lovely speaking to another black country owner keep well and stay safe we are getting closer to getting out again 😁❤️
Terrible job to do, but great result. Definitely going for a stainless tank when I get a boat.
Suggestion, if you need to redo the seal, stick it on all round, the cut the bolt holes with a drill from the top.
kevgermany - Many thanks, at least it’s not a job I’ll be doing again. The tank is an integral part of the boat and therefore has a great capacity. Good luck in your search for a boat.
Cracking job...well done..so is that water safe for drinking with that black coating on or is that tank just for washing and the toilet.
Not yet a narrow boater so trying to learn 😉
Hi Simon thanks for your comment. The bitumen coating is a special one for use in the water tank. So yes from that aspect it is safe to drink. I though only use it for washing and the toilet. I keep tap water in separate bottles for making tea/coffee though would be happy to drink the water if it had been boiled. You also have to consider how clean is the means used to fill the tank. I was warned when I hired a boat that you don’t know where the hose has been ie has it been dropped in the canal!
@@MyNarrowboatVenture yeah that's a thought...think I'll stick to bottled if I get the opportunity. Thanks
Hi Alan. Do you ever get the sediment come through the taps. How do you know when you are getting really low on water?
Hi Christine. The water comes through clean. I don't drink it, just use it for washing. I use fresh tap water for drinks. I have to dip the tank, there is no gauge on it, but you get to know usage. I tend to refill once a week, when it's about half empty/full. Cheers
wow .....what a job....excellent...glad you ended up with mask right way up. do you drink that water??
Thanks Greg. No I don't drink it, I keep tap water in bottles for drinking. The tank is used for washing purposes. I would drink it if I needed to, having first boiled it. Cheers
After painting. Good job. Y the way we would have fitted a linar
Just to add rank cover seal next time just go over bolt holes then get a bit of 15 mm copper pipe and hit it over the hole cuts them out neat
I understand liners can lead to problems between the liner and steel and they’re not so easy to clean.
A suggestion filter your water you put in sediment and charcoal for taste filters !
sol star Thanks but I don’t use the tank water for drinking just for washing / washing up.
How did the surveyor know it required attention? It was evident by the removal process that the cover had not been removed in a very long time indeed.
You've actually answered your own question. He said it was unlikely that the tank would ever have been cleaned out, as it didn't appear the hatch cover had ever been taken off. Cheers
@@MyNarrowboatVenture not really self ansewred, as it was evident by the removal process itself and not prior to it, as far as am aware.
Forgive my pedantisism. Love the videos. Have to say you come across very well indeed.
Good job there Alan,Why didn’t you buy,or hire a pump to pump the water out
Thanks Craig. The bucket and wet vac were quite sufficient to empty the tank. Cheers
You better check into that,I feel you are missing something!
Dusk mask is up side down
Well spotted Dave, I did wonder if anyone would notice.
Wire on rusty steel is always a chore, & not particularly effective. An abrasive wheel would be better & easier, & do a much better job. When refitting the tank hatch, why wouldn't you use stainless bolts?
Dust mask is better the other way up pinch the Ali strip around your nose stop you steaming up so much
Later on in the video, you’ll notice the mask is the right way up. Cheers
