This is significant because if you play as a female and choose the sarcastic dialogue here, Mel reacts with distaste rather than interest. It shocked me the first time I played this quest as a male and heard Mel say this instead of the usual "Yeah, sure." (Not sure exactly what he says here but it's along those lines) This indicates Mel is most likely a gay character in canon! Bethesda, you sneaky bastards >:D we get more lgbt representation by the day.
Don't think he's gay, it's probably the unusual flirt from another male, he probably didn't know how to really react and possibly caught onto the sarcasm. He's probably not sure but never pushed it.
