I have this thought that if the writers are insisting the Actual Phantom Thieves are interacting with this new world, that could mean we are possibly dealing with either time travel or my grand thought, Parallel Worlds.

So long as they're not the protagonist in the main game they can talk. Examples like Maya in Innocent Sin, Tatsuya in Eternal Punishment, Yu in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax and the various animations

On the flip side, Ren as a dad would be really too relax and laid back, letting his son have as much freedom as he wants (kinda like Toph Beifong in Legend Of Korra)

Plus I think both Ren and Sumire would have certain memories come back when they find out their son has persona abilities like them and takes after his father with the inheritance of the Wild Card.
