When you need to delete the file in software distribution it says the action cannot be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program

      Hello,
It's because you need to correctly stop the service that is using it, sometimes it start again automatically after you stopped it. Open your prompt with admin rights and execute the following command : net stop wuauserv

you have to open settings > windows update > and then PAUSE the updates. If you leave the current updates open, that is the current service that is keeping the file "open". So click pause updates for 7 days and then delete the files. After you delete the files, you can click resume updates.

Thanks buddy, this did the trick for me
However, after stopping wuauserv & bits and deleting the content in SoftwareDistribution folder, I did the restart as you mentioned, but after reboot these two servercies didn`t need to be started manually through cmd, as they were already running automatically. Nevertheless, it didn`t hurt anywa and all updates were loading again. Kudos to you

It was giving me trouble too. I figured out a solution that worked for me. Maybe there's something to it... Maybe not. But its worth a shot..
You'll have to work fast as your computer will most likely try to resist.
Start by clicking Pause Updates for 1 week. Then run command prompt as administrator. Issue the necessary commands decribed in the video. Then go to the folder specified and highlight everything. Press the delete key. Then very quickly click the "apply to all" box followed by OK. Then restart your computer before it has time to challenge your authority.
At this point, feel free to smack your PC around a little bit. A little verbal abuse can't hurt either. Repeat the process if needed until full submission is achieved.

the best solution is to restore your pc from System properties -> System protection -> from System properties go to System Restore

*CAREFUL!* If anyone wants to try this, please be wary that it can remove programs, drivers and updates. It's important to know enough about what how-to instructions do to your computer. Years ago, I was following some instructions on how to fix a PC problem. One attempt at a 'fix' was to format the hard drive. I thought: "What does that mean?" So, it looked it up, and found out it would delete pretty much *everything!* Sure, that should be fairly common knowledge, but there's a first time to learn everything, and we could end up learning the hard way if we're not careful. A lot of how-tos seem to skip the catastrophic warnings and assume you already know them.

@@ahmadaladwani7250 Yes, but in this case? You probably won't lose anything important, but I'm not sure if it will help you either. If you go to system restore, it will let you rewind your computer back to a restore point. Restore points are like memories of what the computer used to be, or like checkpoints in videogames. Each restore point has a date, remembering what your software was like at that date. If you go back to a restore point, it will delete all the software (apps, updates, drivers and such) that you put on your computer AFTER that restore point. It will basically rewind your computer to the memory of whatever it was at the time when the restore point was made. However, it will not delete your files and documents. It's supposed to fix whatever might have gone wrong after the restore point, like an update that didn't work, or a faulty app that messed with your system.
Normally, a computer automatically makes restore points every now and then. Mine only stores one at a time, and deletes the ones before that. I can set it to store more, but it takes up space. You can just check the date on the restore point you're about to choose, and make note that it will undo any software added to the computer after that date (without touching your files). It shouldn't be a problem, but you should just be aware of what it will do. For instance, if you installed Microsoft Word after the last restore point, it will erase Word, but it won't touch your documents. If you have Word, chances are you installed it long before the restore point, but you can always check the restore points' date to make sure.
