Sadly it's an uphill battle. The general population is quite anti gun or at least incredibly misinformed. Our government is also incredibly anti gun. with our laws and how they're written they lump anything they possibly can in with firearms law like crossbows, paintball, airsoft, air rifles and even certain knives and protective clothing. So basically whenever you try to loosen laws around gel blasters or things like airsoft, the government thinks they would look weak in releasing restrictions and don't do shit. And when they do decide to do shit, they'll choose to go after real firearms license holders, who are in my opinion one of the most scrutinised groups in Australia.

The under the rug reasons for their banning of airsoft and the like is so Aussies have a much harder time having any farmiliararity or training with any firearm, toy or not. Aswell as keeping people away from these toys in hopes they won't form an interest in actual firearms and pursue ownership.

C- semi automatic rim fire, I think shotgun with more then 5 in the magazine
      D- semi auto centre fire,
H- hand guns, both pistol and revolvers but have to compete to have this licence depending on what you use
M- I think it is for military equipment, gun smiths and manufacturing and body armour (I think)
You need to do a safety course to obtain a licence, then apply for a licence, which involves a police check and fees, also need to specify why.
takes forever and you are limited to cat a, b and/or h
Once you get your licence you need a permit to acquire, that takes a month to get to processing then another month for them to process, to get a cat c and d you need to do other courses, checks and give reason for owning them.
Crazy rules, but keeps you from doing stupid stuff that could cost you all your firearms and 5 years ban from owning them.

It’s not too bad, if we want to shoot the automatics we just go on a holiday to the US, that’s what I have done.
Also our all our wildlife has the potential to kill you but none actually will for food or wants to, mostly out of protection.
Not like a bear or mountain lion.
I still have my collection of rifles and there is no limit to how many you can have. I have only cat a and b, Most shooting here is either spotlighting pest control or target shooting.
Still nearly every town has either a 100m bench rest range or a 1000m range, shotgun clubs and pistol clubs, where I live in North Queensland there is like 5 or 6 ranges that are close, 2 hr drive or less.
To own a pistol as well you need to participate in a certain amount of comps a year to keep them, which I think is 3 for pistol and 5 for revolvers (I think)
Also the people at the ranges are genuinely the nicest people you will ever meet and will always have a chat,
Sort of a thing you would have to come over here and see

As an American it is frustrating to see how defenseless as countrie such as Australia makes it citizens. At least your "kinda" protected surrounded by oceans. But with next to no Navy and a minimal Air Force and all other aspects of of the military on the smaller side. Requiring the help of the US for protection. If Australia was ever invaded there would be practically impossible for Australia to protect its citizens. If Australia had a second amendment such as the US it would naturally make it a lot harder for any to invade. Sorry you see struggling so much with not just gun rights of real guns but also airsoft and water beads. I swear if a government was allowed to make any rule it wanted unrestricted, they would classify a clear all plastic water squirter as weapons of mass destruction. And would be locking up kids for multiple life sentences for possessing a weapon of war since a drunk filled one with 100% proof Vodka to drink and use a a flamethrower.

Anyway, got my first pistol today, Golden Eagle, CO2. Hopefully the wife and I can hit a field again soon.

@@TiernanWilkinson yes it isn't illegal but they are hard to come by and very expensive
And about legal guns you can rarely get a license if you're an ordinary citizen. Even if you have cause to own a firearm you would have to go to a shit ton of paperwork and running around different offices for months maybe years just to get a shitty revolver made by the government because its not easy to get an arms manufacturing licence too. And the only legal bore is .22 and 12 bore. And import of guns is also banned since 1983
