Thank you Paul Liz and Ernie for the upload,😍 watched all the areas my wife and I were on back in September, They say the Shropshire has the most impressive bridges' on the network. Did you visit the Shroppie Fly pub? Don't answer that actually, I'll wait for that episode. 👍🪚🔨📐😀
Hi Gary, it's lovely canal isn't it. We arr liking it do far. A lot more rural than ee expected though and shocking Internet 😏 we've not made it to the area that pub is yet. We are waiting for a couple of the locks to be reopened as they have closed them to repair. The bridges on the canal are very impressive, the best I've seen on the canals so far 😊

The 'old stop lock' at around 22:20 is a set of old stop gates. As the Shroppie was one of the last canals built, it is much straighter due to liberal use of embankments and cuttings. The gates were put either end of embankments in case they breached, so at least some water would be retained. The moving water would slam the gates shut, hence no balance beams to close them.
Thank you for the info I did actually look into this and have covered the use of flood gates at embankments in the upcoming vlogs. Thanks for watching 😊
A hire boat that came through after us didn't have a problem with it at all, think we must have been that little bit wider or more panicky about our paint work 🤣😊

Hi guys! Once again another awesome vlog. I have another 3 questions, if you don’t mind helping. 1. What is a stop lock and why it’s needed? 2. What is the average time it takes to work a lock? 3. Can a person navigate through a lock themselves if they don’t have any partner who is living with them? Paul, if you can’t answer, please ask captain Ernie. Have a great day. Stay safe
Hi there. A stop lock is a type of canal lock that was originally used to control the flow of water between different canal companies. Its usually not a deep one. It worked to completely break the flow of water and was a way to prevent one canal taking large amounts of water from another canal. Yes single handed boaters can operate locks on their own, in deeper locks they would hold or tie off their centre line while they operated the paddles on the lock allow the water in or out to ensure their boat didn't move around too much. Average time depends how deep it is and how much water you need to let in or out..I'd say on average 15minutes. 😊
What a great turn. A real master in action. Good support from the copilot. I imagine most people would misjudge the turn. That lock was tight... The Shropshire must have been a busy canal in its heyday. Happy cruising
Thanks Hugh, he did a good job of that turn didn't he. Glad we were coning out of the lock and not into it, I can imagine that would have been even trickier to try and squeeze into.😊
