Why Use Self-Inflating / Foam Sleep Pads?

  • Foam sleep pads have been around pretty much as long as backpacking has, yet they have largely fallen out of favor among many backpackers. Are there good reasons to add these self-inflating or non-inflating versions to your sleep system? Here I review several options including Foxelli's Self-Inflating Sleep Pad which they sent to me for review.*
    *Note: When I contacted Foxelli about this pad, I was told it's R-value was 6.9 as I say in the video. As one of my viewers pointed out, on Amazon in the Questions section the seller says it is 2.9.

    Foxelli has answered that the R rating for the pad linked on Amazon in the description is actually 2.9. It may be good to make that clarification right in the video description. I was *really excited to hear of such an inexpensive, lightweight pad with the high R rating described in the video. I imagine others may go and buy the pad without doing a bit more research to see it doesn't have the R rating described here. If you look in the answered questions on the product's Amazon page:
    What is the r-value of this pad?
    Answer:That would d be R2.9 :)

      The 6.9 r-value I mention is what the Foxelli rep told me when contacted the company, but I will note that on the description, thanks!

    Closed cell military all the time for this old timer. I have spent thousands on in air pads including top of the line Expedition grade and that all have let me down in 50 years use. So closed cell as primary then a air added for cold. A R-2 is better than R-0 after a Catastrophic failure. Good video thanks. The right here for the job.

    Great video Doug! I love the print on the Foxelli pad. I have gaiters that match! Surprised at the R-value on it. I might have to look into that for winter camping. I use the Nemo Tensor paired with the Therm-a-rest z-Lite Sol. They work great together! And yes - I know I carry two pads. My old hips can't take it with just one.

    • @BackcountryPilgrim
      @BackcountryPilgrim  3 роки тому +1

      Its pretty big for backpacking but can get shorter than the Zlite and nearly the same width - more awkward to carry though. I actually have the Tensor/Zlite combo myself!

    There are also hammocks! 😀 For 25 bucks thats a pretty damn high R value. I could use it in winter since I do occasionally tent camp but can't justify 200 bucks. Thanks Doug!

    The Foxelli shows how far gear has come in the past 30 years. We used to pay over $100 for a Therm-A-Rest (before the NeoAir) that was essentially the same weight and comfort as the Foxelli. I still use my old self-inflating Therm-A-Rest when car camping.
    These self-inflating pads would probably be good for canoe-camping or bike-camping, or perhaps even winter camping using a pulk instead of a backpack to carry the weight.

    • @BackcountryPilgrim
      @BackcountryPilgrim  3 роки тому

      Yeah I would not carry one of these on a backpacking trip unless it was a fairly short hike, but for everything else they're sweet!

    Great review Doug! I would love to get an ultralight pad for my backpacking days. My husband got me one with a R rating of 3.7 and weights 1# 11oz. I’m not sure it is going to be warm enough on my first backpacking trip in 2 weeks in the sierras. I’m just trying to save for a lightweight backpack first. It all adds up so quickly

    • @BackcountryPilgrim

    I am a side sleaper and a stomach sleeper and I used the nemo tensor for 2200 miles. I am willing to add weight for short hikes and would like to know how much more comfortable this sleeping pad is compared to the nemo. My biggeet problem is the feeling that I am sleeping on an intertube. On a scale to 10, if the nemo was a 5, where would this foxelli pad rate?

    • @BackcountryPilgrim
      @BackcountryPilgrim  11 місяців тому +1

      I'd take the Tensor any day haha. I have difficulty even comparing them they feel so different. But if the intertube feel isn't your thing then I'd say the benefit to the foxelli and others like it is that you get a moderate foam pad and air mattress combined so you can regulate how much of each you want to feel.
