    The only issue with the launch of original Age of Mythology was that it launched like a month after Warcraft 3, which had a lot more hype around it, so a lot of people who would otherwise be interested missed it completely.

    I'm honestly with you Fitz, RTS elitists love to complain that their genre isn't more popular, but when someone makes something that lowers barrier to entry they all complain and whine about the game being too easy. I say this as someone who has played RTS games since Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun, but WHO CARES? You can lower the skill floor and keep the skill ceiling the same. They did it before with Auto Scout in AOE2, and they can do it again. People will complain, and then they'll get over it. It's good for the game and good for the genre.

  • @Adribird

    I would like to think that it will not be as effective as doing it manually to find a consensus between casual and competitive.
    I understand that the developer must have meant that there are things in the design (pop, caps..) that could be improved or that it didn't have many sales (because of piracy and because WC3 overshadowed it), since even AoE3 beat it in sales.

  • @DuVtrell

    The most eye opening thing in that article was what he said about 3DE. On another note, The only original civ from AoE3 that received a rework was the Ottomans. However, the core identity of all those civs has remained the same.

    • @FitzBro
      @FitzBro  3 місяці тому +1

      I am not sure about cross platform, but it could be on the table. It could be best to keep platforms separate. As far as keyboard only playing keyboard and controller only player controller, I think it would be nice but it would be unlikely for them to implement this feature. Less matchup possibilities makes it harder for matchmaking systems in general.

    Fitz the creative director is talking about the response to the repeat button which was *overwhelmingly* negative at the time. I don't know where you got your AoM news at that time but AoM heaven was the biggest forum and people *DESPISED* the repeat button and to a lesser extent, the titans and choice of Atlantis instead of an untapped mythology like Japan or Mesopotamia.
    Many people left the expansion and to go back to the base game and it was very divisive, though people came back and generally the expansion is remembered fondly, in comparison to something like Tale of the Dragon, which is still universally hated and I'm not sure they've even said it will be in Retold
    Also people LOVED the plot and the campaign that part has me baffled. It was always going to be hard to stitch these completely different civilizations and time periods together and the plot was less important than some of the best mission scenario and level design I've ever seen in an RTS - absolutely brilliant.
    But I agree with you Fitz, they got everything right in what I consider my FAVORITE game of all time in THIRTY YEARS of gaming

    • @FitzBro
      @FitzBro  3 місяці тому +1

      The repeat button wasn't in the original launch of AoM from what I remember, so I don't think it would apply when he criticizes the launch of the game.

      @@FitzBroRepeat (autoqueue) was added with the titans expansion. It was fantastic for the long term health, though it caused drama at the time amongst die hard people.

    • @Cyclopsided
      @Cyclopsided 3 місяці тому

      Also, objectively, repeat did not give you an advantage over someone who could manage building stuff precisely. auto queue often over used resources and was inferior to someone controlling exactly how much of things should get built.

  • @jasonsmith1950
    @jasonsmith1950 3 місяці тому +2

    Auto-queue is already in AoM. Has been for a long time. I also recall being able to have a tech in the auto-queue (and the tech won't requeue for obvious reasons, but it was still nice to have). Made spamming ulfsarks really easy. I think push-back is mostly going to be people disliking change (which doesn't make sense in this case because auto-queue is already there) or being elitist (which is bad for the game).
    Also, for the idea of possibly restricting auto-queue to just villagers: remember that the Norse use military units to construct buildings. And that ulfsarks can be trained from their Town Centers (which means that restricting auto-queue to just military or just economic units would be a bit unintuitive for the Norse, since it would be enabled for some but not other units at the town center). The way it is now, it is tied to the building, so you can have one Town Center auto-queuing Ulfsarks near the front while another is replenishing gatherers in your own base. Also, Norse will still need to build dwarves and ox carts in the early game, which means auto-queue might not be optimal early game for them (not like it would be for the other civs that only have 1 economic unit).
    I do think that being able to micro myth units abilities would be a nice addition, provided that they keep an auto-cast function (which would basically function as it does now). Otherwise, it's just extra micro that isn't really needed.

    • @Cyclopsided
      @Cyclopsided 3 місяці тому +1

      Yeah, auto queue was an innovation to RTS added when The Titans expansion came out for age of mythology. I don't know what this guy is on about. it has been in for two decades.

    I'm only used to playing with auto cue, so I would actually kinda miss it. The only thing I hope is, that they fix the horrible hotkey system. In AOE2, everything is
    qwerty
    asdf
    Yxc
    It's so accessible and easy to learn for new players. In AOM fE: Every myth unit of every civilization has a different hotkey, even though you can't use it, depending on which god you choose in each age. They're also more problems, with building hotkeys, and overall it's just a mess imo. So yeah, change that please...

  • @Dreska_
    @Dreska_ 3 місяці тому +1

    I don't have a problem with automation, I have a problem with them changing too many things in whats supposed to be a remake.
    But without knowing the finer points, maybe it'll be a good thing or a bad thing. I like the auto-scout in AoE2:DE because its helpful yet also sucks compared to good scouting. But if you added auto-queue to AoE2:DE there'd be riots.
    So why auto-queue in AoM:R and not AoE2:DE? I guess they are experimenting on a less popular game, or trying to slightly boost sales?
    To me, managing your villagers is one of the core aspects of the AoE/M series. Different strategy games have always been varied & put their focuses on different aspects of gameplay. Some games are built around automation, some aren't, and I think thats fine

  • @spectrallogic
    @spectrallogic 3 місяці тому +3

    I really want more automation. I love all the strategy in aoe4 but it's too difficult to get a grasp on the controls with the very limited amount of time i have.

  • @TheSceletonx
    @TheSceletonx 3 місяці тому

    More accessibility is always good. I would not mind this sort of things to be in AoE 2 and 4 PC versions as well. Provided it is not perfect (which it isnt, as as long as you are decent player, it is always better to assign your villigers manually - for both villager safety and efficiency.) It will only help the very bottom skill PC players, and I dont it is a problem.
    Regarding villiger autoqueue. Thats debatable, but at the same time for example in AoE2 we want from having to build your farms always manualy, through "prebuild" farms in mill for reseed all the way to auto reseed. And I dont think anyone mind that it is in the game at this point. (And for top players it is even not worth to have it own often, because then they dont have full control over their wood stockpiles). It will mostly help bad to average players to focus more on micro, without fallign significantly behind with your own economy. Which I dont think is a bad thing, once again making game more accessible. And if it turns out to be too strong? you can always do something like 1sec delay to queue new villeger once the previous is created, immidietly making it unusuable for any good player.

  • @Arcodus
    @Arcodus 3 місяці тому

    I just play solo, and I am not particularly interested in auto-cue and villager priority systems. As for shaking up cultures in a manner like the civs from AoE3:DE, I would welcome it on principle but if those changes played like ass...
    I'd like for healing to be more available though. I never played certain God combos because no healing were to be found in them. As a rather particular player I would like to heal and restore humans, heroes and mythics. While I like the Greek healer hero I'm not necessarily asking for a Extended Edition solution again(I heard said hero could be used in beardy tactics online). Just you know let me, playing as a God/Pantheon, take care of my worshippers! And God spawn!

    • @vanguardguides8768
      @vanguardguides8768 3 місяці тому

      They're buffing amount of healing since Restoration and Healing Spring will be on cooldown now. However healing should be limited to certain civs (egyptians and certain minor gods). This makes the choices more unique and allows choices without healing to be stronger elsewhere.
      It is big issue if developers make everything cater TO YOU. You already have gods that fit you in the game, why must everything else be so too? It is more interesting having units in the game that prefer to fight until the end, rather than every civ just retreating at low hitpoints.

    • @Arcodus
      @Arcodus 3 місяці тому

      @@vanguardguides8768 Age of Empires 2 & 3 managed fine with all civs having healing, I don't see why that would be a problem in Mythology.

    • @vanguardguides8768
      @vanguardguides8768 3 місяці тому

      @@Arcodus Yes, but main problem with AoE2 is that everyone makes same units. For example Greek using their temples to heal, Egyptians using Priests and Norse Valkyries/Odin Regen, and all of them affecting different kind units, amount of units and at different speeds, is cool and diverse.
      Once you start adding Physicians (Greek Hero EE) to all civs, whole healing mechanic becomes dull.
      BTW, out of the original 9 civs, only 1 didn't have healing available. All Norse gods have either Forseti or Freyja available, 2 of the greek gods have Apollo.
      Even Atlanteans have Healing in Oceanus and Hyperion. Chinese had monks.
      So I dont understand what is your issue with healing? You just don't like using Healing Spring or Valkyries or what? If you want healing, then pick it. Literally only god without any healing in AoM Vanilla or AOM:T was Poseidon.

    I am on the same side as you are. I am totally fine when choices make it available for more players. It satisfies both comp and casual players alike without forcing it. It's just there and that's perfectly fine.
    Hope that they won't change anything drastic, it would go against the first statements that the faithfulness to the original is gonna be untouched and simply improved upon. Because the wording on the take that AOM was rough at launch? WHAT... i don't remember any of that either. Unless they heard few people hating on it and assumed that was the whole community, which would be a huge shame. Almost every person i knew that played AOM loves it to this day, me included.

Catastrophization, Doom, Despair! How DARE people be able to enjoy great games in whatever way works for them! Dare I mention the horror of casuals!

If the reasoning for AUTO anything is to draw in players... not a fan.. cause it wont work... Like what are you going to do.. put it in your marketing... 15:08 "significant changes to how you can control your myth units"
    Oh, goodness, it sounds like they're gonna be unmicroable masses of units like in mobile RTS games or Stukov in StarCraft 2 Coop. IE You'll use lures to sort of micro them along a path but you can't individually micro them. As an RTS player and game designer myself, I have to say, anything that removes meaningful interaction between players and the game, is something I abhor and I personally find that it's bad design. Making myth unit control less meaningful and less interactive would be a gigantic downgrade for me. Perhaps I'm just being paranoid, that's how that statement sounds to me. And if they do that, then I might just skip this remake after all...
