Little known fact Jim Carrey, Brad Pitt, Nicolas Cage, Rowan Atkinson, Dwayne Johnson, Michael Keaton and even Marilyn Manson were all considered the role of Willy Wonka before Johnny Depp got the part.
Ironically, I feel like Roald Dahl would like this version better than the Gene Wilder one because, not only does it stick way closer to the book, but it also has the dark and eerie theme to it that was honestly an undertone in most of his books.
Sadly, everyone favors the bright, sappy, musical Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, because that movie came _first,_ and if there's anything I've learned about film fans, it's that the first of anything will always be put on a pedestal, and everything else gets shit on
@@deuceydee3506 I think this movie is ok, just like the 70s one better. I like dark and weird movies, just not this one. I don't really like Tim Burton and Johnny Depp's an overrated actor to me.

Freddie highmore was also in “Arthur and the invisibles”, where he gets with Madonna, has to fight David Bowie, and drink with snoop dogg during the Great Depression... yeah y’all are gonna want to check that one out
I'm glad someone else remembers it. Honestly that and Spiderwick Chronicles proved that young Freddie Highmore is a great actor, but as Charlie he was given bad direction. And do you remember the Arthur and the Invisibles sequel(s)? In the US there were two, but the UK made it into one sequel.

Fun fact: Roald Dahl hated the original CaCF movie, especially the casting for Willy Wonka, whom he, quote: "...thought 'pretentious' and insufficiently 'gay [in the old-fashioned sense of the word] and 'bouncy'". (He actually thought either Peter Sellers or Spike Milligan should have been cast for the role instead.) Dahl meant for Wonka to be a more tragic soul, someone isolated from the rest of the world and content to stay in his factory of dreams forever. And what kind of person is Wonka in THIS version? Tim Burton even made a point to include Dahl's wife, Felicity Dahl, as an executive producer so that the movie would end up being the version Dahl would have wanted, had he been alive to see it. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the 1971 version, and that's coming from someone who doesn't have any nostalgia from watching it as a kid. I'd go so far as to say that I prefer the older version. But that doesn't mean that the 2005 version is BAD; it's a more faithful adaptation and therefore has a darker, richer story to it. It's like comparing milk chocolate to dark chocolate; neither of them is bad and they're both delicious for different people. Just because more people prefer milk chocolate, doesn't mean the darker version should be dismissed entirely.
Obviously Roald Dahl is the creator of the character, and everyone is entitled to their opinion, but thank goodness he didn’t get his way. Gene Wilder’s performance in the original is one of the greatest and most iconic of all time, and had the original proceeded like the Burton version it would’ve never become the classic it is now. I have several friends who prefer Depp to Wilder, and I have tried to understand, but to me it just doesn’t work at all.
@Banni I see where you’re coming from, but the Burton film never felt like horror or “disturbing” to me, just awkward and sorta off. If that’s what they were going for, they nailed it, but to me, while the original is absolutely more whimsical and sarcastic overall, it also had a handful of moments that are genuinely disturbing to me still as an adult. The mystery of Wonka is WAY more interesting and disturbing to me as well since we never know wtf Wilder’s Wonka will do next, whereas Depp we always knew was going to do something creepy and weird.

This is actually a much much much more faithful adaptation of the book. Like, the book might be even darker tbh. So it’s always bothered me how people praise the original for its light-heartedness when it’s just so wrong.
@@fluffymonkeyyy6617 Nah. Everyone survives in the book as well. Charlie, Wonka and Joe see them leaving the factory when flying the elevator (same as in the 2005 movie)

I heard the first movie was originally named after the book "Charlie and the chocolate factory", but the original author of the book hated it so much he demanded the title of the movie to be changed.
I feel like this movie gets way more flak than it deserves simply because of the success of the first movie, which is funny to say because this movie actually performed better at the box office than the original. It has its own style that sticks closer to the content of the book than the original. A lot of people get defensive about the original because it was part of their childhood, and shit on this movie because it’s not as good, but fail to realize that for people like me, this is the Wonka movie of our childhood
I actually grew up on both movies. Though I was more grew up on the original one, since my dad was a fan of it and it came out when he was around I’d say 5th grade. I think both are nice in their own unique way. It’s nice that the newer one strays ideas from the original book, but also like the musicality and friendly ness of the original version. I personally do like the original, but I don’t have anything bad to say about the new one. They’re both good in their own way.
To be fair I like this version a lot better, it sticks with you rather than the older version and this version is much more closer to the book. Also the songs slap hard so like I can’t diss it

Can we talk about how Grant was only 22 but is able to do a pitch perfect Christopher Lee?
That's so interesting, I didn't know that! Thanks for sharing!
Using chocolate to describe the movies was quite a fitting comparison.
He also hated the original film adaptation of "The Witches"
@Banni I see where you’re coming from, but the Burton film never felt like horror or “disturbing” to me, just awkward and sorta off. If that’s what they were going for, they nailed it, but to me, while the original is absolutely more whimsical and sarcastic overall, it also had a handful of moments that are genuinely disturbing to me still as an adult. The mystery of Wonka is WAY more interesting and disturbing to me as well since we never know wtf Wilder’s Wonka will do next, whereas Depp we always knew was going to do something creepy and weird.
