An authentic jazz orchestra!!!!! I'm so glad of know that orchestras like this exist even in the 21st century. We need orchestras like this now more than ever.

What a beautiful arrangement. Giving the tune to the saxophones is surprisingly effective.

Very special the chorus with THREE TROMBONE players. At 02.03!

I can't recall a recording of this tune in which the melody as written by the composers is played. The first chorus is usually - as here - a transcription of Tram's solo on the famous recording with Bix.

Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks put this to shame. On the Jean Goldkette Project you can here the action on the brass as they wind down. It’s pure bliss.

I was messing around with Tram's melody on both c-mel and alto, and have to say: everyone lists him on c-mel for the canonic recording with Bix, but I really think that he played alto on that cut (as here). I'm assuming the original was semi-improvised (ornamented melody), and if you think of it that way, it lays perfectly on alto -- by which I mean all the note sequences are ones that would naturally come to your fingers if you are ad-libbing around a melody. Yes, it's perfectly playable on c-mel if you read the notes, and not even difficult, but to me it did not feel NATURAL as ad-lib. The little embellished figures hit chromatics and cross the register break in ways that are just awkward enough that someone actually improvising them on saxophone would not do that, unless you had a chart in front of you telling you to play those exact notes. On alto, it all simply flows.

Was that Bix playing the coronet solo ? Must have been because Frankie Trumbauer followed with a sax solo

Somehow, it all sounds more spaced out than on the historical recording by Tram and Bix. It's the same with the Whiteman tunes. This is not to imply I didn't like it tremendously, bzt do you think you could get as dark and "mysterious" a tone from the orchestra as on original despite the more modern recording equipment?

What? No C-Melody sax? Kinda' dis-respectful of Tram's memory, ain't it?
