Well said Bob Kemper: "Jazz is truly America's gift to the world". And Ms. Cohn is the proverbial representative of the music and of America at its best.
If you find a video on UA-cam with Shaye Cohn playing, you have found great music. Not only because of her skill, but the musicians she associates with always exhibit superior quality of performance as well.
Thyat sweet girl can really shine on clarinet, Sh’s as good as any clarinet in NOLA or anywhere, Lyrical. Imaginablebe and just plain exciting, We’l be hearing about her a lot as she continues playing like this,
Agree, "she is as good as any clarinet in NOLA or anywhere". It is Makiko Tamura (Makiko first name, Tamura family name). She is extremely talented and definitely world class. "We will be hearing about her a lot". Note that this video is from 2014. She has been playing since then. There are lots of later videos with her on YT, if you haven't seen. You will not be disappointed, to put it mildly. She is always excellent or more. Unfortunately she plays still much with Kato (this tp player) but she has also her own band, P-time selection, which is very good.
@@sverkerd.a.4978 - Absolutely! I have been following Makiko Tamura for less than a month, and I am in awe at her musicality and command of her instrument. I got to her through another ragtimecave video with Shaye Cohn, who played the cornet. You are right about Kato. It's not that I dislike the trumpet, but that instrument can be screechy; it must be tamed by the player. However, Kato does the opposite, which sounds bad in itself, and worse for overpowering the other instruments, especially in a small venue like this. Fortunately there's P-time selection and other configurations where Tamura can make her clarinet shine unimpeded.
@@ClaudioRCFaria I love the trumpet but not when Kato plays. Shaye Cohn, Marla Dixon and a little Korean girl named Kwak Dakyung ( I think) are all better. And the first two are better band leaders as well. Still it is worth the pain of heating Kato to be able to hear Makiko2 play.
@@markhorton3994 Technically, many people are better than him. However, I give him great credit as a band leader for getting all these people together to make great music.
Dear Shaya! You are an Angel with Jazz for all bodies and souls in/out of New Orlean! Congrats with the Intenational Women Day! You are just beyond compare! And all people around you are the best in the West and the Orient! Love you all!
I keep coming back to this one to watch Shaye pound that piano, she also plays Violin, trombone, accordion and, of course, a wicked cornet. The difference between her pure notes and Kato's is worlds apart.
If you look at the big picture, Shaye is ALWAYS smiling. Her smiles are projected to the audience through whatever instrument she is playing. She does what she does best and it is her gift to us. I am so thankful for people like her in this world we live in today.
Tell him to shut up or better ye take his horn away from him. . I want to hear that beautiful, soulful clarinet. That sweet girl is just terrific. She has the real dixieland spirir in her heart. to heart
I also agree 100%. Makiko was terrific 2014 and has been terrific or more since then. I (and many others) consider her one of the best N O clarinetists in the world today. It is a shame that she still plays mainly with Kato. She has made several wonderful videos with P-time. I wish that she would play with e.g. Shaye Cohn which is more appropriate.
I think it should be mentioned that this is taking place in Japan, where they are based, and it is a DIFFERENT WORLD there for women. I'm sure Kato runs the group
@@kenmurray8476 I'm sure that you are right, and it is a big shame. She should leave this band (or at least Kato) and have a career in a better environment. It is a waste of talent not to do that.
@@sverkerd.a.4978 Yeah, that idiot Kato. Watch from 7:44 on. The band members are seeing him act as if Tamura is in heat. Maybe that's why Shaye came and went. Embarassing.
Me too! I have watched other videos with Shaye playing with this group, but on the cornet. I've seen her play bits on the piano before, but never a whole theme. A wonderful player on both instruments. And once a band leader, always a band leader: she so naturally directs other players, I'm amazed. Btw, this was how I found Makiko Tamura. Now if we could only turn the trumpet down and the clarinet up, the world would be perfect...

There seems to be continuing interest in jazz in Japan, and this isn't the only video to record Shaye (whose mother is Japanese) playing with Japanese musicians. Shaye genuinely enjoys performing with others. No wonder she rejected a career as a soloist.
Shayne Cohn is so talented. I don't t hink there's any instrument she can't play. Great stuff!
Shaye Cohn and the grand artists she attracts to Skuba Skinny!!! A gift beyond price. Thanks from my heart.

Great clarinet solo. And it's the first time I've seen Shaye smile. She should do it more often. She's got a pretty face.
