Old school trick. Swap the inner/outer joints to the other side Axle if they are the same. Wears the joints in the opposite direction
I have an 07 ST Focus and this video has definitely helped me out thank you so much
Change the driver side circlip, it's not reusable and make sure it comes out with the axle or you need to fish it out of the transmission. Literally just did mine on an 08 3 Days ago and I hope you have a slide hammer and CV joint claw because it's the only way the drivers side is coming out
i keep oem blown axles to rebuild later, still better than aftermarket, worth to rebuild them. Only con is boot prices are nonsense
Yea I thought they would have been cheaper still not bad tho
@@LetsDriftMedia great vid btw!
Are they good quality though? It'll be pointless to rebuild and replace if they are cheap
Nice vid!! thank you for sharing.... one question though... did you just fill the grease into the boot? (8:20) shouldn't it be filled to the cage where the bearings are???
You forgot to mention that the grease type is known as Molybedenum Grease, or Moly Grease.
Easy 3.5 hr per side right there bro!
Thanks for this!
Np
Do you not check for wear / play? How much is OK and how needs a new CV/shaft assy replacement?
Hi On the Town and county the spider is around the other way seems strange when I Looked in the manual it is around the other way to yours goes to show you you got to mark then good video thanks.
Thanks for the walkthrough! I’m an inspiring mechanic and have been wondering on how to do this on my FG2!
Wasting a nice towel? I do greasy dis-assembly on a thick layer of newspapers! Check the price of any cloth towels, you'll know what I mean!
Very nice tute. Very clear. Do you think this would help an axle that vibrates when driving at 60mph?
Vibration issues are usually not caused by a bad axle.
Nice video , seems pretty easy to do too.
Really easy second one only took 20 minutes not having to worry about talking and filming lol
Decent vid. Doesn’t need any music though. Kinda strange when the loud cheesy music blares
Thanks man. This was early into my youtube career appreciate the feedback
SUPER video THANK YOU
Many GM axles give you a warning long before damage..you get a ABS light that periodically comes on..some are replacing hubs & abs sensor then saying they are defective
Thanks! tell me more bro. I have a Chev Impala 2009 with 179,000 mi, I spotted a pile of grease on subframe, pass side, but no grease splatter as you you'd expect if the boots where split. How much backlash in CV is not OK?, etc TY!
Where is the best place to buy boots and grease kits? What will the cost be to rebuild vs new? OEM cost for a 2004 Honda Civic SiR is about 500$. How do I determine if the joint is bad?
arent you suppose to clean the brearings and axles with a solven/gas to take out the old one completely away? CV-2 Redline grease recomends cleaning out old grease to avoid contamination and mixture of old and new grease. Old grease mixed with new one can make the newly put on grease less effective.
Definitely a good idea. Never seen anyone do that even in the dealer world though.
@@LetsDriftMedia I can assure you its a standard maintenance practice to remove all old lubricants before reservicing in any application.
@@jethro9341 👍
Smart idea I'd of done that as well. How good are these aftermarket boots though? My boots are not torn I have 0 clicking but have a shake at 65 ,70 mph. I think it's my cv's am I wrong? When I turn wheel fast in park left to right I hear a click maybe not a click more like a tap I'd describe it as. Like I turn left I hear a tap turn to right fast I hear a tap metal to metal I'd describe it as more or less
Solvent yes dont use gas
bought an honda gkn outboard boot set and i could have sworn i put the boot in the right grooves and everything but the clamp has came off twice! is the gkn company off spec?
Do you have a video on taking off the axle from the wheel and shaft? BMW X3 thanks for this vid
I do not but if I come across that job I will try to film it for you
Bro make more toyota repairs like this
The after market boots are thin & won't last..the reason the boots tear cause debris in the road or trying to remove it for ball joint or hub assembly replacement without taking anything loose that will need alignment..people forget about the seal on the tranny replacement or if they have a sleeve for that axle . Now if your strapped for cash you can always take a inner tube with adhesive for Tire plug..it will buy you some time
FWD 4 cylinder van with only 20k miles (2018 Promaster City). I got stuck in very deep soft sand. Trying to get out I heard some nasty popping noises. I drove home 300 miles, did not hear a single noise. The next day pulling out of drive way heard one pop. It only happens when I'm parked for a while and backing out, never while driving. Being told it's likely an axel or u-joint. How can I confirm and find which one? What can I expect pay for this job with new replacement?
Keep doing these vids man. I got a s14 and don’t know much other than basic oil changes and these vids help a lot!
Sick glad I can help you out man
Can u buy the ball joints parts Individually from your local part store are wheel bearing shop if needed to replace if they are bad are Slightly worn are is it worth it to do that are just buy the whole axle great vid to thanks👍👍
Not sure where you could get just the ball joints. Your better off just getting a remanufactured axle
Part number on that snap on tool box?
How did you sneak those greased up towels into the washer without wife noticing?
Does the bearing not connected to the housing?
Sup Nick 👍,allso my ls400 mount are shot engine move i don't know how to replace the mounts, any suggestions 🤔
Yooo. I havnt done those before but seems straight forward raise then engine and swap the mounts. Both LS engines I've pulled were also shot I didnt even have to unbolt them to remove engine Haha
@@LetsDriftMedia it seems hard trying to maneuver the way to the top bolt but I'll try ...
Is there a way to visually inspect the joints themselves once the boots are off to determine whether a rebuild vs. replacement is in order? Thx
Look for marks indicating metal to metal contact. If theres lots of shiny metal, debris, or pitting you may want to replace the axle. If its all smooth and the bearings can easily roll back and forth in the housings without excessive clearance then you're good
@@chickenfixn4439 thanks!
My boots have been torn for a while, I don’t see any visual grease but there is no vibration/clicking etc. should I try rebuild?
Of course. Being torn its exposed to dirt and dust that will dry grease out. If it's not already dried out. I'd get in there remove regressed and replace boots just for good measures. I'm sure if get down there and check that would answer your question. Good luck
I buy it from autozone and get new one with warranty they have not said anything about it im on the 3rd warranty axle
I just replaced both left and right axle on my '03 WRX, now I'm going to rebuild the old ones. Thanks for the simple version
How come you didnt clean the old grease out?
I replaced the CV axle on my Prius. I have a question. After installation, I noticed the new CV axle does not have the metal dust cover at the end of the axle on the transaxle side. Is this a necessary component? In other words, will the transaxle seal be compromised with this metal dust cover missing? Thanks.
Do you have a video on how to burp the boot?
I dont really burp the boot, never had an issue I just put the new grease in then clamp the boots and call it a day
You have a part # for axle boots can't find the right ones anywhere
Most aftermarket axles don't last as long as oe. Take it to a quality rebuilder if u have clicking or wear
Why is it after rebuilding it it can leak again? I made sure I squeezed the shit out of the clamps. It’s been about 4 months since I did it.
Could be residual grease if you didnt clean it up good after the rebuild but if it's still leaking 4 months later could be the boot kit. I've only used OEM kits in the past this will be my first time using an aftermarket kit
Because the mating surfaces between the boot and the cup aren't clean.
@@ProjectMadness I second that, where the boot seals on the shaft should be clean and free of grease, can use rubbing alcohol
@@stevewhitesell4195 and possibly a wire brush
More honest description would be changing out CV boot technically to rebuild them you would have to change out the inner mechanisms...
Nice video. However, you kept saying this was a rebuild. It's not a rebuild at all. It was a re-boot. Rebuilding would be replacing tripod bearings and machining housing's if worn. Just a fyi and not to knock you at all. I'm glad you re-used the O.E axles. Way better than the Chinese aftermarket axles out there. Btw.. I own a Axle rebuilding company in Chicagoland area. So I find these video's interesting to watch.
Thanks man and yea you are correct technically not a rebuild just new boots and grease. More of a service then rebuild
Fuckin’ lit cuhhh😭😂✋🏼
I want to be a technician like you I heard u having ase certificate help u is it true and how is the pay?
They help you make more money but they dont help you fix cars. And pay is too variable since alot of us are commission based so it all depends on you
@@LetsDriftMedia I've seen ase certified shops do some really shoddy work on vehicles I've taken for absurd price
@@bryanmartinez6600 yea like I said ASE certified doesn't say much other then you passed a basic test about cars.
Keep your original axle!
Not easy to remove them out of the vehicle 🚗
Customer states they hear a popcorn-like popping/clicking sound from the front end during turns! 🤣
Knowing the service writers itll probably say a completely different noise description on the RO tho lol
Lets Drift Media Oh damn, your advisors do that shit too!? Lol, like how hard is your job?? 🤣🤦♂️
@@toytech468 not all of em but yea usually after reading it I'm like wait what?!
you should mention that replacing the entire axle can be problematic ........oem costs significantly more than aftermarket...........and if you are using aftermarket more than likely you will run into compatibility issues
My boot failed on crv. Bought one new cv axle cuz of miles. Too big at trans. Bought 2nd. Same issue
Dude! You keep saying that you'll post a link for tools, and you don't! What's up with that?! Just don't make promises, you won't keep! Just say'in! 😨
Get some drop lights over the box
I know realized that while editing this vid
So all you did was replace the rubber boot and put grease in it..........Rebuilt? NO
