- Retired psychologist, former Dean of Students at the University of Nairobi, former Senior Diversity Officer at Penn State University, and former Chair of Nairobi Professional Women Association, Dr. Wanjiru Kamau, discusses the impact of the encounter between Europeans and Africans and the rise of Mau Mau. She comments on the psychological impacts of colonialism and explains how Europeans took advantage of African ubuntu and generosity to colonise. She also discusses the education of the African, the psychological aspects of the Mau Mau oaths, traditional moral and belief systems, aspects of traditional medicine, the trauma of Mau Mau war, and other topics. Dr. Kamau is also the founder of the African Immigrants and Refugees Foundation, which is based in Maryland, USA. Currently, she is a member of the Panel of Eminent Persons for the County Peer Review Mechanism of the NEPAD's Africa Peer Review Mechanism.

Please keep sharing the original culture and history. As an African American, we don’t have a visual of the original culture (sad to say). There is a longing in us as to know the original culture. It is very powerful to reflect on the history so we can understand what happened. One thing that my spirit self understand is that we had everything we needed and wanted. The land provided everything, so there weren’t any reason to want anything to change. So the white man came and wanted what we were already blessed with.
How are they the original culture? Y’all believe anything. They are some random people living in the continent of Africa that you have never met. There’s thousands of cultures that were wiped out and only live in the hearts of descendants. My grandmother is from Usangi Tanzania, which is about an hour away from Mt Kilimanjaro. I asked what it was like when her parents and the elders first encountered Europeans (I’m assuming missionaries) in the mountains and she said initially they thought white people were ghosts.

I saw a white person for the first time when I was four. I was scared and tried to ran away from him, he saw me scared he came closer to me I screamed and cried while running heading home without knowing he was my father's friend. He was going to my house. As I got out of my mom's room telling her I saw a person who looks different and scared me I heard the knock at the door and somebody opened the door and when I saw who the guest was I told my mom that was him. 😂 He was very tall and hairy, he was friendly but I got scared because it was my first exposure to a white person. After I got comfortable I started playing with his kids Tirza and Kemden till they went back to America.

Same here. My life has been greatly enriched by rediscovering and learning about my African Fulani and Yoruba ancestors just this last year. I’m learning the Fulani language right now. I’m in full agreement with Dr. Kamau in that when you know who you are, you don’t accept people calling you any kind of name or answering to it. Until then, I never realized how deeply estranged we had become from our ancestral roots.

I agree. Africans were way too nice and accommodating. All native populations were. If they knew what white people really are and what their true motives were, they would have never entertained them. Hindsight is 20/20. I hope it's not too late for Africa to unite and rid themselves of those demons. Most native populations have been decimated.

Great interview. I learned about the similarities of trauma from a native African compared to an African Diaspora painful memories, and actual psychological disconfort. Black clinicians and educators should acknowledge the effect of history on patients.

Also they would get the Kings STONED on alcohol, until they pass out, then they would wake up and their village people would be gone. My grandpa is 100 years old plus now. I can confirm he has not overcome his traumatic experience caused by the white man. Anytime I visit him he speaks so bitterly about them and he's lately been complaining of pain in his legs claiming it's from the beatings he received during the MauMau movement. Am not a kikuyu but what this lady is saying resonates alot with what used to happen in our community. Apparently the agikuyu were first to transition into western way of life. The rest of other communities saw this as a sign of civilisation and they follow suit. My community (kalenjin) were slow to transition and we continued retaining most of our original culture. There are still remnants of kalenjins still adhering to these culture. That's why we are always stereotyped as 'washamba'. Otherwise, how else did we welcome the kikuyu community in greater parts of rift valley. Just the same way kikuyu community welcomed the Europeans.
But Africans are the same everywhere and it's interesting to learn that Kikuyu are very proud Africans!

I read the Bible a lot. Later l read the book from Jomo Kenyatta “Facing Mt Kenya “. I was astonished by the striking similarities of our culture before colonization to the Old Testament!!! Our spiritual rituals and culture were very similar to the so called Hebrew Israelite culture! Now I know that it’s not just the Agikuyu, but also all Bantus of Africa and also some Nilotes like the Kalenjin in Kenya. Old maps show Mt Kenya as being called Mt Sion/Mt Zion in olden days. The rediscoveries of our cultures in Africa is a gold mine. I’m just loving it!

That is where the teaching "don't wear out your welcome" derived from. My grandmother and mother would say this. Culture is definitely passed down generations after generations without really knowing where it came from. Also, culture is a learned way of doing things. There is ignorance in some shape form or fashion in everyone because we are not aware of everyones culture. Be merciful. Firstly , Egyptians, and Jews or Hebrews were NOT black. Black is subsaharan Africans. The history of ancient Egypt and later and hebrews were always part of Mediterranean world. 2. Indo-European:
Scarcity and Fortress mentality, Warlike nature, Spirit of survival, Patriarchal family, Debasement of women, Xenophobia, Parochialism, Individualism, Moral solitude, Disgust for existence, Pessimism and Literature favoring tragedy. This has lasted 12-30,000 years. This is clearly unsustainable

What mama is saying is very correct, i grew up with my grandmother in the Eastern part of Nigeria in the 80s. I remembered that we have similar cultures that people will abide by in the villages that ensures order and peaceful cohabitation, everyone knows their place and referenced their God or god's... my point is, we were capable of taking care of ourselves before the white man came, we knew alot including medicine and health care, everything was taken care of traditionally and it worked, just in the 80s not long ago 🙌🏾🙌🏾
